VYS0048 | Chinese Sex Balloons - Vayse to Face with Edwina Quatermass-Palmer - Show Notes Making her podcasting debut, Hine and Buckley welcome the weird, wonderful and wonderfully weird Edwina Quatermass-Palmer to Vayse. Worker of a job so secret that Hine and Buckley actually know what she does, possessor of the coolest name available to the English speaking world and wearer of a genuinely gravity defying hairstyle, EQP is an original and brilliant thinker, a valuable and treasured member of the Vayse discord community, a musician and rambler on the path less travelled. The conversation moves from early paranormal experiences in the, frankly incredibly named, Christmas Room of the Jacobean house that she grew up in, to her discovery of Crowley, root work and her dabbling in Chaos Magick. One of the most fascinating and unusual facets of EQP is her life-long relationship with the Great God Pan, and she talks in detail about how he appears to her, how he communicates with her and what this has meant to her over the years. The free ranging discussion also touches on the nature of creativity, retro-causality, the art and influence of the late, great David Lynch, and the question on everyone's lips... is EQP CIA?... (Recorded 3 February 2025) Thanks to EQP for being so candid and open with us on her first podcast and thanks, as always goes to the great Keith, working to make sure that these podcasts make some semblance of sense, one show note at a time. On the night of 16/17 May 1943 the RAF's recently formed 617 Squadron carried out what was probably the most famous air raid of all time. A combination of the genius of Barnes Wallis and the astonishing courage and skill of the crews saw two major German dams breached and a third damaged, leading to loss and disruption to the Nazi war economy. Normally kept top secret, the aerial reconnaissance photos of the ruptured dams and consequent flooding were transmitted around the world, giving the Allies a major propaganda coup. How was the technology for the raid developed? Was the raid worth the lives of the 53 aircrew who perished on the night? How accurate was the epic 1955 Dambusters movie? Harry Sherrard presents a fascinating talk on the 80th anniversary of the raid for a fascinating presentation about one of the greatest feats of arms of World War 2.
Richard Morris joins us to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Dambuster's Raid. To mark the occasion, we take a deep dive into the life and career of Barnes Wallis, the man behind the bouncing bomb.Support us: https://www.patreon.com/historyhackTips: https://ko-fi.com/historyhackBuy the books: https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/historyhack Hosted on Acast. On the night of the 16th May, 1943, Operation Chastise commenced - 133 RAF airmen in their iconic Lancaster bombers took off from England, bound for Germany. Armed with specially designed 'bouncing bombs', the highly trained crews were tasked with destroying key installations in Germany's industrial heartland, the Ruhr Valley. It was an audacious mission of unprecedented precision, from which over a third of the airmen would never return. The Dambusters Raid, as it came to be known, is remembered as one of the greatest feats of daring and airmanship in the Second World War. In this two-part Explainer, and with the help of the late, great RAF veteran 'Johnny' Johnson, Dan delves into the true story of this historic operation.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore. You can take part in our listener survey here.If you want to get in touch with the podcast, you can email us at ds.hh@historyhit.com, we'd love to hear from you! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 31 is a group effort as the FlyPast editorial team discuss the late, Squadron Leader Goodman, his involvement with 617 squadron and the enduring legacy of their missions, namely the famous raid on the dams for Operation Chastise....
On our recent visit to Bomber County, Lincolnshire, the TLG team visited RAF Scampton, home to 617 Squadron and from where, in May 1943, 19 specially converted Lancasters set out on that historic raid. This is our FULL FLAPS tour around the Scampton Heritage Centre, which included sitting at the desk of Wing Cdr Guy Gibson in the very office from where he planned and ran Operation Chastise, and touring the original hangars where those Lancaster's were prepared. Huge thanks to our wonderful guide Colin Clitheroe, a volunteer whose incredible knowledge, passion and warm humour made this an unforgettable experience. As the MOD has confirmed it will be selling RAF Scampton, the Top Landing Gear team urge you to visit the heritage centre as soon as possible AND lend your backing to the Save Scampton campaign. We'll be talking to the campaign's founder in the next Pod.
After Roy and James tried to go it alone in the previous pod, Top Landing Gear is back at full strength for this one. Throughout this series we've been focussing on the Avro Lancaster which this year celebrates its 80th anniversary. And this episode features the Lanc's most famous mission of all, Operation Chastise, ‘The Dam Busters Raid'. On our recent visit to Bomber County, Lincolnshire, the TLG team visited RAF Scampton, home to 617 Squadron and from where, in May 1943, 19 specially converted Lancasters set out on that historic raid. Jez outlines exactly what was involved in one of his best ‘Quick Facts' to date, yet despite his extensive research he bombed somewhat in the TLG ‘Dam Busters' Quiz. We'll play a clip of our tour around the Scampton Heritage Centre, which included sitting at the desk of Wing Cdr Guy Gibson in the very office from where he planned and ran Operation Chastise. Our Full Flaps edition will cover that visit in full, and in a bonus episode we'll hear from Annette Edgar who's launched an ambitious campaign to save historic RAF Scampton as a heritage site, following its scheduled closure in 2022.
On May 16, 1943, one of the most daring raids of the war was launched. Operation Chastise, known in popular parlance as the Dam Busters Raid, saw 19 specially adapted Lancaster bombers attack three targets in the German industrial heartland, led by Guy Gibson. Al Murray and James Holland recorded this episode in Wing Commander Gibson's office at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire. We Have Ways is running a weekend festival from September 17th to 19th. On 16–17 May 1943, Royal Airforce Squadron 617 succeeded in Operation Chastise to use bouncing bombs to breach the Möhne and Edersee dams, flooding the Ruhr valley. This very special episode was recorded for the 75th anniversary of the Dambusters raid. Dan talks to Paul Beaver, then Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson MP, and Wing Commander John Butcher, from today's 617 squadron. Bomb's away and Seinfeld on crack! In this episode's off-topic section, Josh discusses a video he discovered on facebook (that's only on facebook) posted by Dark Facts from Dark5. Apparently spinning, bouncing bombs were engineered during WWII to bust German dams with Operation Chastise. Although the mission was not exactly a success, it was... kind of a success? Then Brett finds humor in one of the greatest cult hits on television. In fact, 'Always Sunny' is about to break the record as the longest running live-action comedy series in history with the upcoming 15th season. This cringey, taboo-tackling humor may not be for everyone... but it is for us. And maybe for you too? This week Scott and William discuss the RAF 617 Squadron's daring 1943 raid on the Ruhr Valley in hostile Nazi Germany. They also discuss a dog with a dubious name, kids choking, the Terry Schaivo/Patton Oswalt connection and how we think that teachers should be the focal point of the post-COVID economy (gag). In 1943, World War II was in its third year and the tide was finally slowly beginning to turn against the Axis Powers. That spring, the Royal Air Force embarked on one of the boldest, most ambitious bombing campaigns in aviation history in an effort to deal a crippling blow to the Nazi war industry in the heart of Germany. Today, renown historian Sir Max Hastings joins me to discuss his latest book, Operation Chastise: The RAF's Most Brilliant Attack of World War II, on the plan to use specially designed bombs to break open several hydroelectric dams and flood the Ruhr Valley. Sir Hastings has had a long career in journalism as a foreign correspondent for the BBC and as an editor and editor-in-chief for the Evening Standard and Daily Telegraph. In his career as a historian, he has authored over twenty books on warfare and military history and has received numerous international awards. Sir Hastings was kind enough to join me from the U.K. via Skype to discuss the logistics of implementing such a audacious plan as Operation Chastise, the engineering that went into creating the so-called Upkeep Device capable of breaching a massive structure like a dam, and the brave pilots who flew at dangerously low altitudes to complete this famous mission.
