In this episode, Mike and I explore what it means to find your purpose, how to embrace life's valleys as meaningful chapters in your story, and the vital link between our physical health and spiritual well-being. Quotes for Notes:“Live on purpose, with a purpose, for a purpose.”“We are digging our graves with a fork, knife, and a spoon.”“If you don't feel good physically, you're not going to be your best spiritually.”Links:Revelation 14:13: “Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”Sermons We See by Edgar Guest: https://www.yourdailypoem.com/listpoem.jsp?poem_id=2270
When your Year 12 child can't do maths or your teen rings crying from camp after being bullied, your instinct is to fix everything. But research shows that simply being heard is often more powerful than any solution. This episode reveals how validation, not problem-solving, helps children develop resilience in challenging situations. Learn the simple two-minute technique that transformed a tearful camp crisis and discover why becoming a "people builder" creates confidence in our children that lasts far beyond any temporary fix. Quote of the Episode: "You don't have to solve; you just have to support. And when the kids can feel it and then you give them an opportunity to find a way forward, they will find it. The answers are deep inside themselves." Key Points: Children need validation and understanding before they can move forward from emotional distress Being a "people builder" creates confidence and resilience in children Emotion coaching involves recognizing feelings, naming them, and allowing them to be expressed Support without immediately trying to solve problems helps children develop self-regulation Hearing supportive voices can be enough to help children find their own solutions With consistent emotional coaching, children develop faster regulation responses Finding the right supportive environments (like tutoring) can transform a child's confidence Children often have the answers within themselves when given space to find them Overcoming challenges builds resilience and confidence Small interactions with supportive people can have profound effects on children's wellbeing Resources Mentioned: Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child by John Gottman [affiliate link] Edgar Guest's poem "A Builder or a Wrecker" Emotion coaching methodology Action Steps for Parents: Practice emotion coaching by naming your child's feelings when they're upset Allow emotions to "breathe" before trying to find solutions Ask open questions like "What do you think would be best?" after validating feelings Look for "people builders" in your child's life (teachers, tutors, friends) Consciously choose to be a "builder" rather than a "wrecker" in your interactions When your child calls in distress, focus first on connection before correction Give children space to find their own solutions after feeling supported Recognise that overcoming challenges builds resilience, even when painful at the time See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are you making preparation for the family Thanksgiving? This week, I will share some thoughts from the book, "Just Folks," by a very favorite author, Edgar A Guest. The Old Fashioned Thanksgiving. "It may be I am getting old, and like too much dwell upon the days of bygone years, the days I love so well. But thinking of them now, I wish somehow that I could borrow a simple old Thanksgiving Day like those of long ago. When all the family gathered round a table richly spread with little Jamie at the foot and Grandpa at the head, the youngest of us all to greet the oldest with a smile, with mother running in and out and laughing all the while. It may be I'm 'old fashioned,' but it seems to me today we're too much bent on having fun to take the time to pray. Each little family grows up with fashions of its own. It lives within a world itself and wants to be alone. It has its special pleasures, its circle, too of friends. There are no get together days. Each one his journey, wends. Pursuing what he likes the best in his particular way, letting the others do the same upon Thanksgiving Day. I like the olden way the best when relatives were glad to meet the way they used to do. But when I was but a child, the old homestead was a rendezvous for all our friends and kin, and whether living far or near, they all came trooping in with shouts of "Hello, daddy!" as they fairly stormed the place and made a rush for mother, who would stop to wipe her face. Upon the gingham apron before she kissed them all, hugging them proudly, to her breast, the grown ups and small. Then laughter rang throughout the home, and oh, the jokes they told - from Boston, Frank brought new ones, but Father sprang the old. All afternoon, we chatted, telling what we hoped to do, the struggles we were making and the hardships we'd gone through. We gathered round the fireside, how fast the hours would fly, it seemed before we'd settle down, it was time to say goodbye. Those were the glad Thanksgivings, the old time families knew. When relatives could still be friends, and every heart was true." I enjoyed these thoughts so much by Edgar Guest, that I felt I just had to share these thoughts with you, the dear readers of this warm thoughts column. Last Sunday we began our series of messages on the general subject of faith. We will begin today's message with a quote from the poet, Edgar Guest, who says "And only he may stand serene/who has a faith on which to lean." That's true, and we all can probably agree with that idea. But did you know that there is a kind of faith which does NOT save us? What does the Bible have to say about this? God has something to tell us through His Word, and so let's spend these next few minutes listening to Him.Thank you for joining us today from Ocean Lakes Family Campground.

Our next poem in the Poetry That Inspires series is titled "It Isn't Costly" by people's poet Edgar Albert Guest. His poems are full of sentiment and optimism. Edgar Guest is reputed to have had a new inspirational poem published in a newspaper daily for over 30 years. His words continue to resonate with millions worldwide. Listen to this beautiful poem in the voice of Simerjeet Singh that will take you to the depths of your soul. Regards, TeamSJS It Isn't Costly Does the grouch get richer quicker than the friendly sort of man? Can the grumbler labor better than the cheerful fellow can? Is the mean and churlish neighbor any cleverer than the one Who shouts a glad 'good morning,' and then smiling passes on? Just stop and think about it. Have you ever known or seen A mean man who succeeded, just because he was so mean? When you find a grouch with honors and with money in his pouch, You can bet he didn't win them just because he was a grouch. Oh, you'll not be any poorer if you smile along your way, And your lot will not be harder for the kindly things you say. Don't imagine you are wasting time for others that you spend: You can rise to wealth and glory and still pause to be a friend. Adam creates a hypnosis session inspired by the poem Don't Quit by Edgar Guest. The session is designed to unlock resources such as determination, resilience, tenacity and sensory acuity to pursue a goal despite setbacks and adversity. This is the poem: When Things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and debts are high, And you want to Smile but have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest, if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about, When he might have won if he'd stuck it out, Don't give up though the pace seems slow, You might succeed with another blow. Often the struggler has given up, When he might captured the victor's cup. And he learned too late, when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown, Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint of clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar, So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit. Adam creates a hypnosis session inspired by the poem It Couldn't Be Done by Edgar Guest. The session is designed to trigger an enthusiastic and positive resourceful state whenever anyone (including yourself) says that it can't be done. This is the poem: Somebody said that it couldn't be done, But he with a chuckle replied That “maybe it couldn't,” but he would be one Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you'll never do that; At least no one ever has done it”; But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing we knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing That “cannot be done,” and you'll do it. 1 Sam. 17: 45-51A Faith That WorksThe world around us—the people around us cannot see the faith that is inside of us. But what they can see are the good works, the good deeds that you do because of the faith that you have.Remember when you were first learning to ride a bicycle; it was all about balance. Many aspects of life are about balance. We need a balance between work and playbetween waking hours and sleeping hours and so on.We need a balanced theology as well.We need faith---It is impossible to please God without faith. Faith means that we believe God is! We believe that He is who He says He is and can do what He says He can do.But the balance comes in when have our faith on one end of the scale and our works (what we do because of our faith) on the other end—so that the scales are balanced.Faith and Works operate like a seesaw—up and down is a smooth movement of balance. But if one gets off—there is no balance—no more smooth up and down—Plunk! No more seesawing.James 2:17 says: Thus faith by itself, if it does not have works is dead!!In James' day some people spoke the language of Christianity---talked like they had a lot of faith but you couldn't tell it (could not verify) it by what they did. They did not have a faith that works! What about you? Do you talk your faith or do you live it out?Throughout the Bible you see men and women, average people just like us, who lived out their faith in the middle of the circumstances that they found themselves in. Look at Hebrews 11. You will see a host of faith heroes listed—people we know who found themselves living life and then God called and interrupted all that.Noah, who had never seen rain, had to be obedient to God and build an ark in the midst of the desert with people laughing at him and calling him crazy.Abram, who became Abraham and then Sarai became Sarah and together travel to a distance land to affect the world population, having a child when they were far past child-bearing age.Moses who forsook Egypt and a life of ease to save his people. And so on.Read it for yourself. And then at the end of Hebrews 11, it says that all those people who obtained a good testimony through FAITH, did not receive the promise. Why? Because God had something better in mind for them that they should not receive it apart from us. He wants us in on the reward. So, God is giving you and me an opportunity to show off your faith, by our works. The poet Edgar Guest once wrote:I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day.I'd rather one would walk w/me than merely show the way.So let's look at 1 Sam.17. We see the well-known story of David and Goliath. Today I want you to look at this story through the lens of the faith of David---that David did not just talk his faith, but he courageously, fearlessly, and almost recklessly lived it out. That is the kind of faith that I'm striving to have---a bold, fearless, reckless faith in God.Chapter 17 begins by telling us that Saul is king of the Israelites, and they are in a battle with the Philistines with a valley in between the two armies. The Philistine army isn't doing much because they have a giant man of war on their side named Goliath that is nine feet tall. Shaq is 7'1', so just imagine an average guy – an average soldier against Goliath. And not only was Goliath tall and big, but he was also decked out in all this bronze armor—bronze helmet, iron on his legs all total weighing about 125 lbs.His spear was this 12-foot-long instrument with an iron point. And a smaller spear—called a javelin was slung on his back.Goliath was the Philistine army's assault weapon, who came not to just kill his enemy, but to demolish him. Then here comes along David, just a boy---probably a teenager, 16-19 years old. He was sent by his father Jesse to check on his three o

Hank Greenberg, who entered the Hall of Fame as one of the greatest hitters in the game's history, was the first Jewish star in team sports. He interrupted his baseball career to serve longer in World War II than any other major league player, and led the Tigers to World Series championships before and after the war. So why did the Tigers sell him to the Pirates? Good question. We hear from an eclectic cast about his career, including poet John Sinclair, who reads verses from the late Edgar Guest; sportscaster Eli Zaret, historian Bill Dow, and -- we're not making this up -- Groucho Marx and Bing Crosby.

On this Fathers Day, I dedicate this reading of Edgar Albert Guest's Poem - Only a Dad - to my father S. Surinder Pal Singh Khurana and to Fathers everywhere for their silent sacrifices, for their behind-the-scenes support and unconditional love. Thank you Dad! Thanks for being YOU! This Father's day, we celebrate and honour the men who have embraced the pivotal role of fatherhood and paternal bonds with this poem on father in English. Only a Dad By Edgar Albert Guest Only a dad, with a tired face, Coming home from the daily race, Bringing little of gold or fame, To show how well he has played the game, But glad in his heart that his own rejoice To see him come, and to hear his voice. Only a dad, with a brood of four, One of ten million men or more. Plodding along in the daily strife, Bearing the whips and the scorns of life, With never a whimper of pain or hate, For the sake of those who at home await. Only a dad, neither rich nor proud, Merely one of the surging crowd Toiling, striving from day to day, Facing whatever may come his way, Silent, whenever the harsh condemn, And bearing it all for the love of them. Only a dad, but he gives his all To smooth the way for his children small, Doing, with courage stern and grim, The deeds that his father did for him. This is the line that for him I pen, Only a dad, but the best of men. People's poet Edgar Albert Guest perhaps wrote this poem somewhere in the early 1900s - urging his readers to draw a boundary between their homes and their offices. Fast forward to 2021 and the WFH scenario, I find his advice soothing and practical. This poetic reminder is our next video in the Poetry That Inspires series. I hope it cheers you up! Regards, Simerjeet Singh Edgar Guest offers great advice in this inspirational poem on spending time with your family at home, despite the pressures that might have been put on your shoulders at work. Home should be a place where you can let go of your worries and reminisce with the people you care about. Edgar Guest was known for writing poetry with a positive message about daily life. Listen to these inspirational words if you want to improve your work life balance. Home And The Office Home is the place where the laughter should ring, A man should be found at his best. Let the cares of the day be as great as they may, The night has been fashioned for rest. So leave at the door when the toiling is o'er All the burdens of worktime behind, And just be a dad to your girl or your lad- A dad of the rollicking kind. The office is made for the tasks you must face; It is built for the work you must do; You may sit there and sigh as your cares pile up high, And no one may criticize you; You may worry and fret as you think of your debt, You may grumble when plans go astray, But when it comes night, and you shut your desk tight, Don't carry the burdens away. Keep daytime for toil and the nighttime for play, Work as hard as you choose in the town, But when the day ends, and the darkness descends, Just forget that you're wearing a frown- Go home with a smile! Oh, you'll find it worthwhile; Go home light of heart and of mind; Go home and be glad that you're loved as a dad, A dad of the fun-loving kind. ― Edgar Albert Guest "Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water." ― Zen proverb “In the hopes of reaching the moon men fail to see the flowers that blossom at their feet.” ― Albert Schweitzer Watch this video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/CRiHrta5XNE #PoetryThatInspires #SimerjeetSinghPoems #HomeAndOffice #EdgarAlbertGuest #WorkLifeBalance #WorkBalance #FamilyMatters #FamilyTime For more information about Simerjeet's work as a motivational speaker, please visit his website: http://www.simerjeetsingh.com Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/simerjeetsingh

Will You will be what you will to be; Let failure find its false content In that poor word “environment,” But spirit scorns it, and is free, It masters time, it conquers space, It cows that boastful trickster Chance, And bids the tyrant Circumstance Uncrown and fill a servant's place. The human Will, that force unseen, The offspring of a deathless Soul, Can hew the way to any goal, Though walls of granite intervene. Be not impatient in delay, But wait as one who understands; When spirit rises and commands, The gods are ready to obey. The river seeking for the sea Confronts the dam and precipice, Yet knows it cannot fail or miss; You will be what you will to be! ~ Ella Wheeler Wilcox Watch this video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/rgxGr2iJWJA #Will #LifeChangingPoem #SimerjeetSinghPoems #PoetryThatInspires #EllaWheelerWilcox #EnglishPoems #Poetry #Poem #Poems Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/simerjeetsingh
This poem is titled "Have You Earned Your Tomorrow", written by Edgar Albert Guest who was known as the People's Poet. In 1952, he was appointed Poet Laureate for the State of Michigan where thousands of people sought his inspirational poems for moral support when they were stressed and loved his subtle humor. Have You Earned Your Tomorrow poem presents a number of probing questions to a listener about how they spend their days to improve the day of another person. The message being conveyed by this English poetry is that even the smallest act of kindness is enough to guarantee a better tomorrow. This motivational poem will prod the listeners into questioning their own goodness and help others in any way possible; thereby earning themselves a well-deserved tomorrow. This English poem by Edgar Guest describes the importance of living each day by being kind and helpful towards others and by making small contributions to improve their lives In this inspirational poem, Edgar A. Guest is trying to convey a message that every good deed you do will come back to you. Cherish what's around you, and spread happiness. Have You Earned Your Tomorrow Is anybody happier because you passed his way? Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today? This day is almost over, and its toiling time is through; Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you? Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along? Or a churlish sort of "Howdy" and then vanish in the throng? Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way, Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today? Can you say tonight, in parting with the day that's slipping fast, That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said; Does a man whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead? Did you waste the day, or lose it, was it well or sorely spent? Did you leave a trail of kindness or a scar of discontent? As you close your eyes in slumber do you think that God would say, You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today? ~ Edgar Albert Guest The Ancient Sage A day is the microcosm of life. You're born every morning, every evening you die. That's all life is: an interval between birth & death. You waste a day, you wasted your life. Because all you'll ever have is a day. The cycle repeats until one day it's the evening of your life. See It Through When you're up against a trouble, Meet it squarely, face to face; Lift your chin and set your shoulders, Plant your feet and take a brace. When it's vain to try to dodge it, Do the best that you can do; You may fail, but you may conquer, See it through! Black may be the clouds about you And your future may seem grim, But don't let your nerve desert you; Keep yourself in fighting trim. If the worst is bound to happen, Spite of all that you can do, Running from it will not save you, See it through! Even hope may seem but futile, When with troubles you're beset, But remember you are facing Just what other men have met. You may fail, but fall still fighting; Don't give up, whate'er you do; Eyes front, head high to the finish. See it through!

As I was reviewing 2018 this week by looking through my photos, I found a picture of a poem from the Dominique Wilkins statue that sits outside of State Farm Arena here in Atlanta called "Don't Quit" by Edgar Guest. It encourages you to stick with it even when times get tough because often we get our biggest trials right before our biggest successes. In today's episode, we talk about what's worth sticking with and what we should quit on the path to self-mastery. Let's start down the Christmas trail (again compliments of www.QuoteGarden.com - formatting omitted) with a tradition from Betsy Cañas Garmon's family. She sits with her husband in a room lit only by tree lights and wants us to remember that our blessings outnumber the lights. Happy Christmas to all. Thomas Tusser also has advice for the season. At Christmas play and make good cheer, for Christmas comes but once a year. Lenora Mattingly Weber is here as well to focus our perspective. Christmas is for children. But it is for grown-ups too. Even if it is a headache, a chore, and nightmare, it is a period of necessary defrosting of chill and hide-bound hearts. Sing hey! Sing hey! For Christmas Day; Twine mistletoe and holly. For a friendship glows In winter snows, And so let's all be jolly! No one is quite sure who first said it but there's little doubt that we can all give it a hey! hey! of our own. Gertrude Tooley Buckingham is joining in, Christmas is coming; it is almost here! With Santa and presents, good will and cheer! Now that may be even better than one of those Hey! heys! In steps the realist to keep us from getting too carried away. Oh, for the good old days when people would stop Christmas shopping when they ran out of money. It's not surprising that no one takes credit for that one. Fortunately, May Sarton is here to keep us on the Christmas rails, I can understand people simply fleeing the mountainous effort Christmas has become but there are always a few saving graces and finally they make up for all the bother and distress. Dinah Maria Mulock is also here for us and for are sense of good will, It is the Christmas time: And up and down 'twixt heaven and earth, In glorious grief and solemn mirth, The shining angels climb. Fail not to call to mind, in the course of the twenty-fifth of this month, that the Divinest Heart that ever walked the earth was born on that day; and then smile and enjoy yourselves for the rest of it; for mirth is also of Heaven's making. Thank you Leigh Hunt, that certainly brings the full spirit of Christmas into focus for us. John Kendrick Bangs sharpens our focus as well, Whose heart doth hold the Christmas glow Hath little need of Mistletoe; Who bears a smiling grace of mien Need waste no time on wreaths of green; Whose lips have words of comfort spread Needs not the holly-berries red. His very presence scatters wide The spirit of the Christmastide. You may think it was Charlie Brown who said, The perfect Christmas tree? All Christmas trees are perfect! but it was actually Charles N Barnard. Even so, it's so true. Let's give Edgar Guest a chance to get in his two cents worth, At Christmas a man is at his finest towards the finish of the year; He is almost what he should be when the Christmas season's here; Then he's thinking more of others than he's thought the months before, And the laughter of his children is a joy worth toiling for. He is less a selfish creature than at any other time; When the Christmas spirit rules him he comes close to the sublime. Woops, that pesky author unknown is butting in again with another dose of reality, Christmas is the season when you buy this year's gifts with next year's money. Eric Sevareid puts us back on track though, As long as we know in our hearts what Christmas ought to be, Christmas is. Bob Hope expands on the point, When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things — not the great occasions — give off the greatest glow of happiness. D D Monroe is also on board with the sentiment, It is the one season of the year when we can lay aside all gnawing worry, indulge in sentiment without censure, assume the carefree faith of childhood, and just plain "have fun." Whether they call it Yuletide, Noel, Weinachten, or Christmas, people around the earth thirst for its refreshment as the desert traveller for the oasis. Okay Benny Hill, go ahead,
