"Self-loading baggage" is a derogatory term often used by pilots to describe lazy or disengaged medical crew members in the air medical industry. Whether intentional or not, this behavior sets a bad precedent for those of us that want to embrace aviation cross-training and be able to assist the pilot effectively. In this podcast episode, we are joined by pilots Miles Dunagan and Brett Reeder to discuss how pilots and clinicians alike can be a cohesive team before, during, and after the flight. This time they're accused of doing more than just slashing tires: they might have crashed a $178 million dollar plane. While the details here are murky, the joke is due to the military recently boasting about how the crews of the plane that just crashed into the ocean by overshooting a runway were the most diverse in the country. They even uploaded an image of an all female crew in the past. We aren't sure who exactly was in this crew, but we know one thing for sure. Congratulations on the promotion to Corporal, Deputy Pigott, and Deputy Edwards. In the interview, the Rescue 9 crew breaks down what ended up being an officer-down type rescue and incident. For those who have not listened to The Real ResQ podcast, Jason Quinn goes behind the scenes of the rescue stories we hear and read about. We interviewed Jason Quinn way back in episode 21. In this episode of The Real ResQ, I teamed up with Jon Gray from Hangar Z podcast and together we interview the crew of Riverside County Sheriff's Department, Aviation Unit Star 9, who won the Airborne Public Safety Association Captain “Gus” Crawford Memorial Aircrew of the year award for 2022. (Episode 72 on the Hangar Z Podcast site.)  The crew consisted of Deputy Chad Marlatt acting as the PIC, Corporal Andy Rasmussen acting as the SIC, Deputy Drew Pigott acting as the Crew Chief, Deputy Michael Edwards Rescuer, and Deputy Mike Doyle acting as the catcher. In the interview, the Rescue 9 crew breaks down what ended up being an officer-down type rescue and incident. The team was dispatched to an injured California State Park Ranger who had slipped approximately 200 feet down a hillside on icy snow. The ranger grabbed a small bushy branch, which stopped his slide just at the edge of a cliff approximately 500 feet high. The ranger radioed them and advised that hypothermia was setting in, and given his position, he will not live if he is not rescued very shortly.   For those who have not listened to the Hangar Z podcast, Jon Gray created the first and only podcast dedicated to promoting and exploring the personnel and equipment behind the missions of public safety aviation. The young person was Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd who took her own life in 2012. Story has gone viral. Montreal mom living with multiple sclerosis whose two young sons opened a lemonade stand on their front lawn last weekend to raise money for the MS Society. All was well until a neighbour complained about noise and police arrived. The mom, Ayana Massa told me police were extremely aggressive. Since the incident was reported people have driven 3 hours from Quebec City to Montreal just to meet her and her sons. Sent me a photo of an acknowledgement of a $2,000 donation to the MS Society of Canada from her son. That money was raised in 3 days with the lemonade stand. Margaret Bristow of Ottawa is a chronic pain patient who has been living with increasing agony and reduced pain medication and/or help reducing her debilitating pain, although other approaches to dealing with her pain were attempted. Ms. Bristow petitioned the government for Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) which was repeatedly refused. Now a medically assisted death has been approved and next Wednesday, August 10, Margaret Bristow will die with the help of a doctor in Brampton, ON. What is happening with the Canadian aircraft crew from Pivot Airlines in the Dominican Republic? Most recent report had their lives being threatened by prison gangs and the D.R. prosecutors trying to get the crew returned to prison. The crew found and reported on stashed drugs (cocaine) on their plane. So what is Ottawa is doing to help the crew return to Canada? According to Pivot CEO Eric Edmundson. when we last spoke a few weeks ago, the federal government had done almost nothing to help the crew. Canada is considering qualified suppliers for the Future Aircrew Training Program (FAcT) – a generational training and in-service support program for the Royal Canadian Air Force. One of those suppliers is a Canadian-based solution called SkyAlyne – a partnership between CAE and KF Aerospace, two Canadian aviation and defence leaders.   In this episode of Vanguard Radio, we will hear from two members of the SkyAlyne team.  Joining us is Abir Kazan, capture manager for SkyAlyne, serving as the company's main point of contact with the Government of Canada and guiding a diverse team of experts through the process of creating SkyAlyne's solution for FAcT. Abir has more than 20 years of experience navigating complex defence proposals and contracts for CAE.    The other guest is Peter Fedak. Peter spent 25 years as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Peter was helicopter pilot with the RCAF, serving in Haiti and Afghanistan, and a Qualified Flying Instructor of the highest order, posted in various locations including Fort Rucker, Alabama, and as the Commandant of 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School at Southport, MB. Following his retirement from the RCAF, Peter became the Site Manager for the contractor at Southport – KF Aerospace – a position he holds today.     Our guests will talk about their solution for this major government/military procurement, the benefits for Canada including jobs, Indigenous communities and as a home-grown innovation driver. They will touch on incumbency, in-service support and lasting community relationships.

SEO: Jeff Phillips, Naval Medical Research Unit, University of Alabama, F-22 Raptors, hypoxia, oxygen saturation measurement, arterial gas embolism, aircraft oxygen systems, physiologic episodes, Delores Etter Award, Ken Ford,Dawn Kernagis,Jon Clark,IHMC Today’s interview is with IHMC Research Scientist Dr. Jeff Phillips. Jeff joined IHMC a year ago after spending six years as a research psychologist at the Naval Medical Research Unit in Dayton, Ohio. He worked almost exclusively on hypoxia in tactical aviation and was part of team that was instrumental in getting the F-22 Raptors back into operation after a series of hypoxia-related episodes among jet pilots. In 2012, Jeff won the Dolores Etter Award, which the Department of Navy annually awards to its top performing scientists and engineers. Jeff is a University of Alabama graduate who earned his Ph.D. in experimental psychology. At IHMC, he works on research that ranges from physical and cognitive performance in extreme conditions to the role that ketone esters can play in protecting special operators from hypoxia, fatigue and other issues. Because Dawn Kernagis was in London giving a presentation when we conducted our interview with Jeff, IHMC Senior Researcher Jon Clark joined Ken Ford to co-host the episode. In today’s episode, we discuss: [00:15:45] Jeff’s participation on a team that investigated hypoxia-like episodes F-22 pilots in the Air Force were having. [00:17:02] The problems with aircraft oxygen systems (OBOGs) and the related physiologic episodes (PE) that extend beyond the F-22 to virtually all frontline tactical jet aircraft. [00:18:19] The physiological effects of hypoxia on the brain and the associated cognitive and perceptual performance deficits. [00:19:54] The most promising technologies for detecting a hypoxia event. [00:29:10] The challenge of understanding what may be a multifaceted phenomenon like OBOGS-related PE events. [00:32:30] Studies that have shown pure oxygen in the lungs causes the alveolar cells to collapse. [00:37:10] The possibility that increased breathing (hyperventilation) may be occurring in aircrew involved in PE events who develop rapid onset hypoxia-like symptoms. [00:48:36] The role that mindfulness plays in elite performance as well as day-to-day life. Show notes: [00:06:06] Jeff talks about growing up in Sandflat, Alabama. [00:06:57] Jon asks Jeff what he was like as a kid. [00:07:32] Jeff talks about the impact that reading Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” had on him. [00:08:19] Jeff explains how he headed off to the University of Alabama expecting to become a newspaperman, but ended up switching his major to psychology. [00:09:50] Jon asks Jeff about his mentors at Alabama who encouraged him to purse a doctorate in experimental psychology. [00:11:50] Jeff talks about a paper he helped author on handshaking and how it generated so much attention that he was interviewed by the Associated Press and network news shows. [00:14:16] Jon asks Jeff how he ended up at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory in Pensacola, Florida. [00:15:02] Ken asks Jeff to describe the work he did at the Pensacola lab. [00:15:45] Jeff talks about becoming part of a team that investigated hypoxia-like episodes F-22 pilots in the Air Force were having when the Pensacola lab relocated to Dayton, Ohio.
