For today’s episode, we complicate the narrative about the origins of the War on Drugs and mass incarceration by examining the role of African American lawmakers, police officials, and community leaders in the rise of the current carceral state. We interview Professor James Forman Jr., the J. Skelly Wright Professor of Law at Yale Law School, about his Pulitzer Prize winning book Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America. We begin by discussing how Professor Forman’s personal and professional background shaped his research (10:40) and his motivation for writing the book (14:00). We then have a conversation about the role of the black community in creating criminal justice policies that contributed to mass incarceration (20:22) and how to balance the immediate needs of communities with the potential long-term consequences of criminal justice initiatives (26:45). Next, we discuss whether or not diversity on the police force matters for community-police relations (34:05), the importance of including violent offenders in conversations about criminal justice reform (43:57), and how to address past harm caused by marijuana criminalization (51:02). We close the episode by contextualizing Professor Forman’s work and discussing the public reception of his book (1:06:55). Discussions about race and racism in America are often led by African Americans and other people of color. Generally missing from these conversations are white Americans who have been insulated from racial discomfort due to our segregated society. Today, we interview Dr. Robin DiAngelo, author of "White Fragility: Why It's So Hard For White People To Talk About Racism,” and explore the implications of white fragility on our nation’s discourse about race and the experiences of everyday racism among people of color. We begin by defining “white fragility” and what it looks like in everyday life (38:34). We then discuss 1) the ways in which white progressives contribute to racist systems of oppression (40:56), 2) the barriers to discussing race and racism with white people (46:07), and 3) how racial triggers contribute to profiling and “existing while black” incidents (50:50). We also have a conversation about how universalism and individualism contribute to white fragility (57:10) and how the rules for engaging in conversations about racism are rooted in white fragility (1:02:27). We close by discussing the practical applications of Dr. DiAngelo’s work (1:07:45) as well as how to move forward and have meaningful dialogue about racism that leads to change (1:13:15). In recent years, increasing attention has been given to identifying the social determinants of Black-White health disparities. For today’s episode, BhD explores the roles of place, socioeconomic status, and gender in shaping health behaviors and outcomes in the black community by interviewing Dr. Rashawn Ray—an Associate Professor of Sociology and the Executive Director of the Lab for Applied Social Science Research at the University of Maryland, College Park. They begin by discussing how intersectional identities (24:35), neighborhood racial composition (29:00), individual mindsets (33:12), and racial-profiling (34:39) shape health behaviors. They then have a conversation about health, neighborhood safety, and the policy implications of place (39:00). Next, they discuss body image in the black community, the implications of the “thick” movement for black women’s health (44:33), and the appropriateness of using BMI as a measure of health in the black community (47:57). They close by discussing policy solutions related to health and physical activity (1:02:36).
