Nestled in the heart of 5 Points, Duke's has become a mainstay for the local music community. I've fallen in love in this bar, had my heart broken, made business deals, commiserated and celebrated everything along the way. With a decade under their belt, many Nashvillians can say the same. Duke's is celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a parking lot blowout this Saturday featuring music from some of old Nashville's finest including William Tyler, Be Your Own Pet and Heavy Cream. Ahead of the celebration, I sat down with co-owner Sara Nelson to talk about the bar's impact on the city.
Pedestrian deaths skyrocketed in Nashville during the pandemic.Although recent trends appear promising, the scar left behind still lingers. Advocates for pedestrian safety responded to the ongoing issue by crafting, painting and placing wooden doves around the city, marking where pedestrians were hit. They, along with Diana Alarcon, the director of the Nashville Department of Transformation, join This Is Nashville to update Nashvillians on the issues around pedestrian safety. Joe was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and since childhood he has loved the Philadelphia Phillies. According to him, “I live and die with the Phillies, no matter where they are in the standings. They have been playing great of late and that makes me happy!” Now a Nashvillian for almost five decades, Joe is also a Tennessee Titans football fan. He has had season tickets since they arrived in Nashville in 1998. Joe is an avid writer and songwriter and became a published children's book author in 1997 with The Molly Books, a four-book series published by Ideal's Children's Books. In 2003, New Leaf Press published G. I. Joe and Lillie: Remembering a Life of Love and Loyalty, an inspirational biography Joe penned about his parents. His song by the same name was included on the Oaks' Colors album, released the same year. A music video of the song reemerged in the summer of 2009 and became a YouTube phenomenon with almost six million views. Joe also wrote the title song for the Oaks' The Journey album, as well as the text for The Oak Ridge Boys' coffee table book, An American Journey, published in 2004. In 2014, New Leaf published Joe's Christmas short story, An Inconvenient Christmas, which was inspired by an Oak Ridge Boys' song from an album by the same name. In September 2010, Journey Press, a division of Sheaf House, released From My Perspective, a collection of Joe's commentaries, stories, and other writings. His book Christmas Miracles, a collection of Christmas short stories and commentaries, originally published in 2008, was updated in 2012. His most recent book, On the Road with The Oak Ridge Boys, was published by Harvest House Publishers in May 2015. For relaxation, Joe retreats to his farm on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line, where he can often be found on his John Deere tractor mowing part of his 350-acres—or sitting on his front porch and playing banjo, an instrument he has played for more than a decade. He plays a step-out lead on the Oaks' Rock of Ages CD. Joe has been singing since he was about four years old and in his mid-teens fell in love with Southern Gospel music harmony. A born-again Christian, he is always quick to give God the credit for everything he has accomplished. He joined the Oaks in 1973, just prior to the group's emergence on the Country music scene. As with the other group members, much of Joe's time has been spent on the road performing, but he found his own way to get the maximum possible enjoyment out of touring. “My life has been simple,” says the Oak who was the principal spokesman on stage for five decades. “I go out there and try to sing the best I can and give them physically and mentally everything I've got. When it's done, I go back to my room or the bus, eat some pizza or sushi, call my Mary, get on my Apple laptop, do a little writing, and say to myself, ‘Hey, I've done what I'm supposed to be doing and I feel great about it.'” Joe and his wife, Mary, have two daughters, Jennifer, and Sabrina; two grandchildren, Breanne and Luke, who recently served in the U.S. Navy; and one great grandson, Noah Chance. They also have four cats, Mitty, Crockett, Barney, and Maggie Mae. In early 2024, Joe announced his retirement from touring due to the onset of a neuromuscular disorder. He passed on to Glory on July 9, 2024, due to complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He leaves behind his precious wife, Mary Ann, daughters Jennifer and Sabrina, granddaughter Breanne, grandson Luke, two great grandsons, Chance and Grey, and a sister, Nancy. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph S. Bonsall Sr. and Lillie Bonsall. A memoir written by Joe in early 2024, entitled I See Myself, will be released in November.

I am a lifelong Nashvillian, 74 years old, mother of our daughters, three nurses, and an elementary teacher. I have 13 grandkids and six great-grandkids. FAMILYI grew up in a large Catholic family with six kids in the 1950s. I had a great childhood. My father was a doctor, and my mother was a nurse but a full-time homemaker after getting married. CHILDHOOD I was always involved in the academic side of things, and my mother kept me super busy with after-school and summer activities (I guess to keep me out of trouble because I was a very social person). I had three brothers who teased me constantly about my weight even though I was not that big. I went out for sports, but I was continually cut, so I focused on academics, music lessons, and the creative and literary arts and pretty much excelled at most things I got into. MARRIAGEAfter getting married at 21 and having four children in 9I had picked up about 20 pounds (when I got married, I was probably about 25 pounds overweight). So, I was not overly obese but just never felt comfortable in my clothes. CAREERMy career was in medical publications, nonprofit writing, public relations, and special events. STATS—- 5'7”… 74 years YOUNG… SW: 218CW:150-ish PROTOCOLI used a 20/4 protocol to lose. I opened my window at about 330 every day. I got the last 25 off in five months by “clean fasting” after I had a three-year plateau during which time I was probably fasting 50% of that time, but, again, it was not a “clean fast.” (I had coconut oil or butter & heavy cream & artificial sweeteners in my coffee). NSVsMy medical lab work is in perfect alignment, and I don't take any medication. My body is much stronger, and I feel s0 much more energetic, healthy, clear-minded, and positive. The brain fog I was having in my late 60s, as well as some depression, is completely gone. I went from size 18 jeans to size 10 and from XL/XXL tops to mediums. This is the first time (even as a child) I have been in a “normal” BMI range. I have dozens and dozens of non-scale victories, including not being embarrassed in a bathing suit, having the stamina to walk over 4 miles at a time with no fatigue, having a lot more confidence when interacting with people, and wearing clothes that look cute on me. I have skin tags that have disappeared, joint inflammation that has lessened immensely, clearer skin, and thicker hair. The list is almost endless. I NEVER counted calories, points, or macros. I guess I am in maintenance because this is where my body has been since last May. I weighed the exact weight I was in the eighth grade. I am 20 pounds less than when I graduated high school and 25 pounds less than when I married. Despite my age, I have more energy today than 20 years ago.Our Patreon Supporters Community -Join us!Please consider joining the Fasting Highway Patreon community. Nashville Council Member Olivia Hill—a U.S. Navy veteran and the first openly transgender person elected in Tennessee—discusses her lifelong journey of hiding, self-discovery, and ultimately embracing her true identity. She recounts brutal “blanket parties” in the military while overcompensating with a hyper-masculine persona, only to break free decades later and run for public office. Drawing on 40 years of utilities experience, she explains how her unique background helps her tackle infrastructure issues for all Nashvillians. Olivia highlights the power of everyday visibility, sharing stories of young trans kids finding hope in her leadership and reminding us that simply being oneself can foster real change.

This is it! The last episode of Season 1. We laughed, we cried, and we imbibed great quantities of Purple Power mead—homemade made by Jules's Nashvillian friend, Roy Black! ‘Twas the perfect beverage for an episode with copious references to Beowulf… So grab a glass of honey-wine and get ready for an episode about guilt, death, and the privilege of education. Dear listener, thank you for sticking with us to this point; we will be taking a hiatus until the spring. For updates, follow us on Instagram at boymeetswinepodcast. Cheers!
Everybody has a good story to tell. It's especially good whenever that story is spooky, creepy or has a UFO in it. I have a good friend named Jesse who owns a physical media store called Danger Zone Video. Located in Mt. Juliet, TN, it is the premiere physical media store in the Nashville area. Back in November, I brought my podcast gear into Danger Zone Video and sat up shop in his lobby. We posted a Social Media campaign asking for local Nashvillians to come down to the store and tell us their paranormal story for the podcast. We were not disappointed because people showed up with some fantastic stories. From tales of ghostly apparitions on bridges to Native American creatures to tales of being chased through the streets late at night by someone, or something, I've got something for almost everyone. Join me and all of my guests as we take you Into the Danger Zone! I want to say a special thank you to Jesse and Danger Zone Video for hosting this event. I had a great time and I will definitely do this again! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

You'll want to tune in today because we're talking all things being seen, especially if you've ever felt like an outcast or like society just wasn't built with you in mind. You have so many different parts of your identity that intersect, sometimes you may have to prioritize one over the other to feel safe, but that doesn't mean that the other parts go away. And this is exactly what today's guest is an expert in navigating — in her own life and with clients — among many other things. I'm pleased to introduce you to fellow Nashvillian, Aimee Sadler. She has a Masters in Social Work, is currently a masters candidate at Lipscomb University specializing in conflict management. She currently works as the manager of Community and Collective Impact at the Center for Nonprofit Management. She provides nonprofit consulting in DEI, cultural competency, cultural humility, and cultural understanding. She's also a private practice clinician focusing on therapy for women of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. She's also a mom, partner, and loves all things Disney. She's won a plethora of awards, including but not limited to being recognized as one of Nashville Business Journal's 40 Under 40, and serves as Vice President on the board of Nashville LAUNCH PAD, an organization offering safe and LGBTQIA+ affirming shelters and housing accommodations to unhoused young adults. In this episode, we're covering things like what it means to be seen, why it's important for people to feel seen, why people struggle with being seen, dealing with the fear that sometimes comes with the vulnerability of being seen, listening to your intuition, and confidently navigating the intersectionality you experience, even while breaking social norms safely. Amiee also get's personal and tells us about her own experience with intersectionality.***Visit the complete show notes at https://humanamplified.com/episodes/117***FREE Workshop:https://www.brandifleckcoaching.com/self-healing-the-root-workshop

“We're not building new roads (for the most part), so it's about trying to use that [existing] infrastructure in better ways that meet our modern needs.” --Michael Briggs, director of mobility at Vanderbilt University's Transportation and Mobility Office, currently on loan to the City of Nashville as a director of transportation planning through 2024 On November 5, 2024, less than six months from today, Nashvillians will go to the polls to vote on critical issues and races, including who will serve as our nation's President. Locally, however, Nashvillians will also vote on a multibillion dollar transportation improvement program called Choose How You Move, the first transit referendum to appear on the local ballet since 2018. Climbing the Charts sat down with Briggs to discuss why transit should be considered essential infrastructure, how this plan differs from the prior failed transportation plans presented to Nashvillians and explores how improving transportation addresses broader community needs (affordable housing being at the top of that list).

Up to this point in season 5, we've talked quite a bit about theory and big-picture ideas around self realization and identity. In today's episode, the same theme carries through, but we're getting more practical and hands on to spark your creativity to put those self-love based concepts into action in your own life in a way that's authentic to you. Guest Christy Pruitt-Haynes is telling us all about her action-based approach to getting to know herself now after major relationships in her life have changed and she's entering a new phase of what it means to be her. She's telling us all about her adventures with ABC solo dating. We'll get into what that is in the episode, but first…She embarked on the adventure of solo dating after she'd lost her best friend, went through a divorce, and her daughter and niece flew the nest. She realized that so much of her life revolved around others, and now that they'd made their exits in different ways, she was left with herself. So this discussion is all about what Christy chose to do with that realization. In addition to talking about what ABC solo dating is and how Christy does it, we dive deep into the emotions involved with doing activities by yourself, especially if you're a people person;, the beauty of being present with yourself; the importance of preference and knowing it's okay to do what you like and what brings you joy without feeling guilty; absolving guilt; trusting the creative process; moving through grief that comes with change; and letting go.Christy says “after a lot of hard work, personal reflection, and self-discovery… the only person I'm going to spend the rest of my life with is me so I better get to know and fall in love with her.” That's her focus now. And she's sharing part of that story with you today. At the end of the day, we have to be able to be alone with ourselves. I know it took me a long time to love my self enough to be able to do that — it can be a fun yet difficult task. As you listen, I encourage you to think about what might work for you to grow your relationship with yourself. Are you able to be alone with yourself and what might be fun in that process? Let us know in the comments what you think. Now, let's dive in.***Visit the complete show notes at https://humanamplified.com/episodes/111***Share your story on Human Amplified!
If you stand outside a local Old Navy on a hot summer day, you might see a grandmother carrying large bags, overflowing with discounted American-themed apparel for the whole family. It's hard to resist a good sale, especially when it comes in the form of patriotic polyester. Others might be a little more hesitant to proudly display patriotism via flying the flag outside their home or office or by saying the pledge at ballgames. We asked our listeners what you thought about the pledge of allegiance. We'll discuss these comments and more as we understand Nashvillians' relationship to the American flag. First obtained and released by the Louder with Crowder conservative Rumble show, the three-page handwritten document allegedly shows Audrey “Aiden” Hale meticulously planned her last moments and the mass school shooting at The Covenant School on March 27. Three young children and three school staff were killed before Hale, 28, was shot dead by responding police. The manifesto, written in a spiral notebook, has various creeds and thoughts scrawled down by pen. “DEATH DAY,” Hale wrote on one page with the drawing of a target reticle and a pistol, along with the date “3/27/23.” "The day has finally come!" Hale wrote. "I can't believe its [sic] here. Don't know how I was able to get this far, but here I am. I'm a little nervous but excited too. Been excited for the past 2 weeks." Hale continued: "There were several times I could have been caught especially back in the summer of 2021. None of that matters now. I am almost an hour & 7 minutes away." “Can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m ready," Hale wrote. "I hope my victims aren’t.” Hale later prayed to God in the manifesto to help her in the mass shooting. "(God let my wrath take over my anxiety) It might be 10 minutes tops. It might be 3-7. It's gonna go quick," Hale wrote. "I hope I have a high death count." Hale then wrote, "Ready to Die nana" and signed it "Aiden," Hale's trans name. On another page, Hale wrote a detailed day schedule, with a post-it calmly asking, "Lunch may be [sic] around 11 am–1 pm?" Hale's day began at 6:30 a.m., and ran through getting dressed, breakfast and what to do with the "stuffed animals & possessions." At 9:30, Hale was to "pack up special belongings in backpack(s)." By 10:20, Hale was to "gear up & set up guns in trunk (assembly) & get out vest (w/mags inside)." Hale was armed with a handgun, a rifle and a pistol modded to handle like a rifle. Hale also wrote about making a "final video tape" on the schedule, though this has not been released by police or confirmed to even exist. Hale detailed a plan to leave for the Covenant School by 11:35. The last entries to Hale's schedule were for 12:35, where she would "open fire," and then it was "time 2 die [sic]." Hale was shot dead by police at around 10:27. In one of the pages headlined, "Kill those kids!!!,” Hale calls the students “crackers” and expresses hatred for their “white privilege.” Hale also wrote a bunch of more obscenities about the kids that I won’t mention… but you get the idea. Authorities have been criticized for months for not releasing Hale's manifesto. A source with the Louder with Crowder show told The Post Millennial that they received the photographs of Hale's notebook from a "source near law enforcement." Hales mass shooting earlier this year preceded a planned "Trans Day of Vengeance" event in the U.S. capital that was ultimately canceled. And in the immediate hours after the shooting, trans activists occupied several state capitol buildings to protest pending legislation restricting the transitioning of children. At the capitol in Nashville, trans activists held a moment of silence for the victims of the mass shooting. They held up seven fingers to include Hale as among the victims. Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell, a Democrat, says his office is immediately investigating the unauthorized release of some of the images from the Nashville trans shooter’s manifesto. Authorities have tried to prevent the release of Hale’s writings before today’s leak. https://thepostmillennial.com/breaking-nashville-mayor-launches-investigation-into-leak-of-trans-nashville-shooters-manifesto?utm_campaign=64487 Nashville mayor launches investigation into leak of trans Nashville shooter's manifesto Following the leak of the transgender Nashville shooter’s alleged manifesto on Monday morning, Mayor Freddie O’Connell said that the city has launched an investigation into how the images of the writings were released. "I have directed Wally Dietz, Metro’s Law Director, to initiate an investigation into how these images could have been released. That investigation may involve local, state, and federal authorities. I am deeply concerned with the safety, security, and well-being of the Covenant families and all Nashvillians who are grieving," O’Connell said in a statement, according to WSMV. "This incident naturally invokes additional emotional trauma, and families or individuals who need support should reach out to professionals at National Alliance on Mental Illness (615-891-4724), MNPD support counselors (615-862-7773) or MNPS Family Information Center (615-259-INFO)." On Monday morning, Steven Crowder released three handwritten pages of what he said were Audrey Hale’s manifesto. These highlighted an anti-white sentiment held by the shooter that killed three young students and three staff members of the Covenant School on March 27, 2023. The pages apparently show Hale planning the day of the shooting down to the minute, including in all capital letters at the top of the page, "DEATH DAY." A source with the Louder with Crowder show told The Post Millennial that they received the photographs of Hale's notebook from a "source near law enforcement." https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-demands-jury-says-nyag-has-no-case-heated-testimony Trump demands jury, says New York AG has 'no case' in heated testimony President Trump demanded a jury Monday after his unprecedented time on the stand, calling the civil trial against him and his businesses a "disgrace" and saying New York Attorney General Letitia James has "no case." Trump described his forced testimony as "election interference" while maintaining that his net worth is "far greater" than financial statements during testimony Monday. The President and 2024 Republican presidential front-runner took the stand Monday morning in the non-jury civil trial stemming from James’ lawsuit against him, his family and his businesses. James alleged Trump defrauded banks and inflated the value of his assets. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly said his assets were actually undervalued. Trump has repeatedly said his financial statements had disclaimers, requesting that the numbers be evaluated by the banks. "I think this case is a disgrace," he said, adding that people are being "murdered" in New York as James is "watching this case." "It’s a disgrace. It is election interference because you want to keep me in court all day long," Trump said while on the stand after testifying for more than five hours. "And Judge … I want a jury." One of Trump's attorneys, at the end of the President's testimony, said that in "33 years," they have "never had a witness testify better." "An absolutely brilliant performance by President Trump. He's not backing down. He's told everyone the facts," the Trump attorney said. "Now that the American people know what's going on, maybe something will change." James, a Democrat, sued Trump, his children and the Trump Organization last year, alleging that he and his company misled banks and others about the value of his assets. James said the President’s children – Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric – and his associates and businesses committed "numerous acts of fraud and misrepresentation" on their financial statements. James filed the lawsuit against Trump "under a consumer protection statute that denies the right to a jury," a Trump spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "There was never an option to choose a jury trial," the spokesperson said. "It is unfortunate that a jury won’t be able to hear how absurd the merits of this case are and conclude no wrongdoing ever happened." During Trump’s unprecedented testimony Monday, New York Judge Arthur Engoron tried to cut him off from providing lengthy answers to state lawyers’ questioning, and he even said, "I don’t want to hear everything he has to say." But Trump defended himself and his businesses while on the stand and blasted the investigation, lawsuit and non-jury trial. "We shouldn’t be having a case here because we have a disclaimer clause that every court holds up except this judge," Trump said, referring to the disclaimers on all of his financial statements and statements of financial condition. Trump went on to call James a "political hack," saying she used her investigation and lawsuit against him "to become governor, to become attorney general." The President was referring to James’ campaigns in which she vowed to "get Trump." Engoron, in September, ruled that Trump and the Trump Organization committed fraud while building his real estate empire by deceiving banks, insurers and others by overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing financing. "He ruled against me without knowing anything about me," Trump said on the stand. "He called me a fraud, and he didn’t know anything about me." Trump went on to slam Engoron for undercutting the value of his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida — a property that Engoron valued at $18 million. Trump's testimony concluded Monday afternoon. His daughter, Ivanka Trump, who was dismissed as a defendant in the case this summer, is set to testify on Wednesday. https://www.breitbart.com/sports/2023/11/04/michigan-football-staffer-fired-after-allegedly-trying-meet-13-year-old-girl/ Michigan Football Staffer Fired After Allegedly Trying to Meet 13-Year-Old Girl The University of Michigan has fired football staffer Alex Yood after he was accused of attempting to meet up with a 13-year-old girl, according to reports. Yood was apparently fired in September after the allegations appeared in an Instagram video that accused him of arranging to meet an underaged girl, 247 Sports reported on November 2. The firing was confirmed on November 3 in an email sent by the university and reported by the Daily Mail. In the video that spurred the firing, Yood appears to admit that he was planning to meet a girl he was speaking to online. Confronted at a liquor store holding a bottle of spirits, Yood is told that the girl he is planning to meet is only 13. He replies that he didn’t know her age but is told that some of the texts prove that he was aware she was only 13. You can find the video in the article in my show notes, and it’s about 10 minutes long. Men in the video also claim that Yood asked the “girl” if she was a virgin. The men follow Yood out to his car, and he drives away as they yell at him and call him a pedophile. It is unclear what role the men who confronted Yood have in the incident or how they became privy to the text messages Yood allegedly sent. However, the video was apparently made by an online vigilante named Boopac Shakur, a man known for exposing sexual predators. In a wholly separate incident, Shakur was shot and killed in Michigan during an argument at the end of September. The school apparently cut ties with Yood quickly afterward. “Alex Yood is no longer part of the athletic department,” a school official told the Mail. “An issue was brought to our attention, and we immediately moved to handle the matter with our HR department. ” “We are unable to comment further regarding this employment matter,” the email added. The situation with Yood only adds to the pressures on the University of Michigan football program as allegations of sign stealing continue reverberating, spurring calls for coach Jim Harbaugh to be fired.
