Why do technical experts often make poor change leaders? Roger Guerrero, Head of Enterprise Strategy Execution at Merck, challenges how organizations select and develop leaders in transformation environments. Drawing from his experience overseeing Merck's corporate strategy implementation, Roger explains why change leadership shouldn't be confined to specialized teams but embedded as a core expectation for all managers. He argues that companies over-index on technical expertise while undervaluing the ability to inspire and lead through change—creating what he calls a "silent killer" in organizations. Whether you're struggling with resistant middle managers or disconnected executives, Roger offers practical strategies for identifying and developing genuine change leadership beyond technical competence.----Connect with:Nellie WartoftCEO of TigerhallChair of the Executive Council for Leading Change (ECLC)nellie@tigerhall.com ----00.00 - Introduction 01:30 - Why change management shouldn't be limited to specialized teams03:45 - How technical industries often select leaders for technical expertise, not leadership ability05:20 - Why change leadership competencies should be core criteria in promotions07:10 - The problem with the "individual contributor to leader" career path09:15 - Creating dual career tracks for technical experts vs. leadership roles11:30 - How to identify people with natural change leadership abilities14:45 - Addressing the "this isn't my job" mindset in middle managers16:20 - Red flags that indicate poor change leadership potential19:40 - The evolving profile of effective senior leaders—from engineers to MBAs to motivators22:15 - Strategies for working around resistant leaders you can't replace24:30 - Handling resistance at the C-suite level27:15 - The importance of communication style in successful change initiatives29:35 - Why transparency and empathy are critical for change leadership----Breathe by RYGO | https://soundcloud.com/francesco-rigolonEverything You Need Is By Your Side by Vlad Gluschenko |Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_US

red helicopter―a parable for our times: lead change with kindness (plus a little math) by James Rhee https://amzn.to/3PThkGy Redhelicopter.com Embrace your agency, lead change, and fly free—in the business of life and the life of business—with kindness (plus a little math) In kindergarten, James Rhee received a toy red helicopter in gratitude for a simple act of generosity—sharing his lunch. Decades later, the lesson from that small gift led him to develop a human-centered framework for business and personal achievement that helped him overcome seemingly insurmountable hurdles and find unprecedented success. “red helicopter is a transformative experience. James Rhee's story is a must read for anyone, of any age, who wishes to think, act, and lead with balance, agility, and wisdom." —Jay Shetty Rhee was a high school teacher turned private equity investor when he unexpectedly took the helm of Ashley Stewart, an iconic company predominantly employing and serving Black women. Inspired by the values his dying Korean immigrant parents instilled in him, he knew that a radically different—yet familiar—approach was required to lead this twice-bankrupt company from certain liquidation to true transcendence. Is it possible to be successful and kind? To lead with precision and compassion? To honor who we are in all areas of our lives? The entire world bet against him and Ashley, but Rhee trusted his instincts to identify, measure, and leverage the intangible goodwill at the company's core, a decision which ultimately multiplied its fortunes several times over. Anyone can combine the clarity and imagination we had as children with fundamental business metrics. Anyone can apply this refreshingly intuitive approach to lead change at work and at home. While eloquently sharing a story of personal and professional success, red helicopter presents a comforting yet bold solution to the dissatisfaction and worry we all feel in a chaotic and sometimes terrifying world. The insights and knowledge that Rhee imparts have been accumulated over decades of investing and leading at the highest levels of business. Drawing on this experience, he encourages us to trust the wisdom deep inside each of us so we can learn how to: Create and measure “goodwill,” the ultimate collective good Discover agency and the truth about kindness it entails Identify the invisible obstacles standing in your way Lead transformational change through small, scalable acts Construct an accurate “balance sheet” of our assets and liabilities Reorient our lives, organizations, and the world to reflect the best in us Are you looking for a sustainable balance between life, money, and joy? For yourself and others? Imagine, a clear path forward told as a deeply felt human story. A poignant and uplifting celebration of humanity, red helicopter—a parable for our times is a tale of struggle and triumph, compelling for its honesty and relatability as much as for the instructions we can all use to balance the books of our lives. red helicopter—a parable for our times features approximately 20 original illustrations by Korean artist Heyon Cho.

In a recent podcast episode, Rafael engaged in a captivating conversation with Dave Coffaro, an authority in strategy, change leadership, and organizational growth. Dave stressed the importance of agility in leadership and the need for organizations to adapt swiftly in today's dynamic business landscape. His insights are a valuable resource for navigating change successfully. I had an amazing conversation with Dave Coffaro for our podcast, and I'm excited to share the incredible insights he provided. Dave, an expert in strategy, change leadership, and organizational growth, delivered valuable wisdom during our chat. Dave serves as a Principal of the Strategic Advisory Consulting Group. Dave works with service businesses, financial services, academic insurance professional service firms, and nonprofits in refining and redesigning their future state to achieve accelerating growth, more favorable economics, or both. His work also includes serving as interim CEO for organizations in transition. Dave is also published and has a number of articles and blogs that are published in SmartBrief on leadership, the American Management Association Journal, Board Leadership, and the ABA banking journal, to name a few. Dave is also an author and his latest book is Leading from Zero: Seven Essential Elements of Earning Relevance. Dave begins by highlighting that leadership extends beyond the C-suite; it's a quality that can be exhibited by individuals at all levels within an organization. It involves making choices, bringing innovative ideas to the forefront, and positively influencing the organization. He emphasizes the importance of leveraging competencies, recognizing your organization's strengths, and seeking partnerships that complement those strengths. The goal is to adapt and evolve while remaining true to your core competencies. Dave introduces the concept of organizational agility, a vital attribute in today's rapidly changing business landscape. This agility involves continuously monitoring both internal and external changes, interpreting their implications, and swiftly adapting. Change leadership isn't a side project; it's integral to the core business. He presents McKinsey's definition of organizational agility, which underscores the ability to reconfigure strategy, structure, processes, people, and technology to seize value-creating and value-protecting opportunities. Our discussion delves into how the pandemic accelerated the need for agility in financial institutions. Legacy systems are now challenged by agile fintech startups, and regulatory agencies are embracing innovation. This adaptability is essential to staying competitive. Dave underscores the significance of adopting a holistic perspective within organizations. Breaking down silos and viewing the organization as a living entity rather than a rigid machine allows for quicker responses to change and optimal resource allocation. In summary, Dave Coffaro's insights on leadership, agility, and organizational growth are invaluable in today's dynamic business environment. The conversation serves as a reminder that agility and adaptability are core competencies that organizations and individuals should cultivate. Listen to the full podcast episode to delve deeper into these transformative ideas.

There's a new way to lead—and it doesn't require having a million followers or a fancy title to make a real impact. In fact, my guest today says the best leaders aren't always the ones with the smartest ideas, but the people who know how to pull the best ideas from other people. My friend, Alex Budak, has a new book called Becoming a Changemaker—and the principles in it are so good that I wanted to have him on the podcast to share them with you. Today, Alex reveals the powerful concept of micro-leadership and how you can start seizing the small moments that add up to big change in your business. Plus, he shares the fascinating and honestly pretty uncomfortable exercise he makes his high-achieving students at UC Berkeley do in class. And I don't think you'll ever see rejection or adversity the same after hearing about it. It's time for you to become the changemaker you were meant to be—and this episode with Alex will show you how. Get Alex's new book HERE.
