Roundball...talk?!?!?! That's right, it's the HIGH FLYING BIRD episode where we cover Soderbergh's second shot-on-iPhone feature, a 2019 direct-to-Netflix basketball lockout drama starring his old THE KNICK pal André Holland (and a totally different guy named Dr. Edwards). Join us for a great in-person (!) discussion of the intersections of sports, labor, race, and technology, and what exactly Soderbergh is trying to suggest he's really doing with this experimental distribution business. Plus we come up with some genuinely great names for basketball teams. Listen or we'll smoke you like the clown that you are! Richard is joined by Joel Anderson, host of The Ringer Tailgate and The Press Box podcasts, for a conversation about the NAACP's Out of Bounds campaign and the bigger question underneath it: What is fair to ask of Black college athletes and recruits at a moment when lawmakers and the courts are attacking Black voting power? They start with HBCUs and PWIs, move through the campaign's specifics asks, and cover lots of topics from there: political education, NIL incentives, the transfer portal, the limits and power of boycotts, and why college football keeps becoming the platform for this kind of discussion. In this episode:* 0:00: The roles of HBCUs and PWIs in Black college life, and how generational experiences shape Richard's and Joel's views.* 12:01: The NAACP's campaign and its asks of recruits, current athletes, fans, donors, and consumers.* 16:16: What is fair to expect of college athlete activism now* 26:55: Whether the idea of a “boycott” has lost force* 37:53: The role of the NAACP in 2026 Producer: Anthony VitoMore on the story covered in this episode: * NAACP press statement: Black athletes and fans should withhold support from public schools in states attacking Black voting rights* NAACP: Out of Bounds * CBS Sports on the NAACP campaignIf you like this episode, you'll love a paid subscription. The NAACP launched a campaign urging Black athletes and consumers to boycott public universities in states accused of limiting Black voting representation, but Joy Taylor believes the conversation is more complicated than people want to admit. In this solo episode, Joy breaks down the economic reality behind college athletics, NIL money, generational wealth, and why asking young athletes to sacrifice life-changing opportunities comes with real consequences. She also dives into modern expectations placed on women, the pressure to “have it all,” and why choice matters more than judgment. Black athletes seem to do extraordinarily well in sports. Is that really true? And, if so ... why? Genetics? Social factors? Less than 90 years ago, 18 Black American athletes defied the odds being the first black athletes to compete in the Olympic Games. Of all to be the first competition, they went to Berlin, Germany in 1936: a time riddled with the racist and anti-Semitic indoctrinations of Hitler. We know black people have had to endure a lot in this country, come learn about the trials and tribulations they experienced here and abroad. Does this only scratch the surface? Yes. But the discussion of Donna & Jonathan continues to unveil the ugly underbelly of issues we continue to see in this country. From the inspirational highs of Wilma's athletic achievements to the critical social reflections they prompt, Dr. Davis offers us a vibrant and nuanced exploration of history's gray areas. Stay tuned as we unpack topics from the significance of solidarity among Black athletes, the ripple effects of the Jim Crow era, to the ongoing fight for genuine representation and acknowledgment in sports and beyond.
