Pain is tough. It hurts. We struggle against it at first, perhaps even for a long time. But over time and through struggle, we learn from it and it can be one of our greatest teachers. Though it may not seem like it at the time, pain will always lead to progress when we can learn from it and reflect on its message. Today I was reflecting on my journey as a writer and an entrepreneur, and the thing that stood out the most was this: To get extraordinary rewards, we must endure extraordinary pain. It is the failures, the pain, the discomfort, and the stress that makes us worthy of what stands on the other side. To achieve great goals, you need to overcome great obstacles. There is no way around it. As Ray Dalio said it, “Pain + Reflection = Progress,” and progress is the key to being successful in anything. Experiencing pain, loss, or grief sucks (that’s an understatement), yet it’s a normal part of life. In this episode I share some hard-learned lessons on moving through pain, loss, and grief. Pain + Reflection = Progress One of the most important capabilities you can develop in life is the ability to reflect on pain rather that react or avoid it. Most people can’t reflect on their pain while they are going through it. They focus so much on the pain that they aren’t able to consider what is happening, why they ended up in this situation, or how they are processing the pain. Once the pain subsides, they simply move onto something else and never really address the core issues. They medicate, or cope, or distract themselves because it’s too painful to go back and address the core issue. Here are 5 things I’ve learned in the school of hard knocks when it comes to managing and processing pain in order to produce progress: Go to the pain rather than avoiding it. Write a psalm to God. Just do the next right thing. Stop running your tongue over your gums where the tooth used to be. Ask, “What does this make possible?” If you are going through a difficult time right now, please don’t hesitate to reach out to friends and family. To isolate yourself is often the worst decision you can make when experiencing tremendous pain, loss, and grief. Sometimes things don't go your way, maybe several things, all at once! You need to stick with what's working, keep your head down, and don't let up. When you get a No. It's your responsibility to find another way to get to Yes. If you don't succeed, practice Pain + Reflection = Progress and learn from your failures. This equation comes from Ray Dalio's new book, Principles, and was one of the biggest lessons that I walked away with. Learning how to reflect on our painful and adverse experiences to move forward and progress is one of the most important skills that we can develop and practice. This lesson has been really impactful for me, so I really hope you all enjoy this talk! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/matt-best/support
