In episode 6, Valentine interviews artist and educator Yvette L. Cummings.  Yvette opens up about her path, the process of leaning into her vulnerability, the layers of meaning and significance in her boldly patterned, colorful work, and much more.She received her BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design and completed her Masters of Fine Arts degree at the University of Cincinnati's School of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning in 2003. Cummings is currently Assistant Professor of Visual Arts in Painting/Drawing at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. Her work can be found in both public and private collections and has been exhibited in multiple group and solo exhibitions throughout the south and mid-west. Gao Hang (高航) is a Houston based Chinese artist. He recieved his Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting/Drawing from the University of Houston, and a Bachelors of Art degree in Oil Painting from the Capital Normal University, and is a 2020 Houston Artadia fellow. His artworks have been shown in major galleries and Netherlands, Spain, Korea, Germany, and England. He's currently showing at the Hole Gallery at East Hampton, NY and at the Pulpo Gallery, Germany. His two upcoming solos will take place in Houston, US and London, UK later this year.

In the 19th episode of Contemporary Czech Art we will present the young painter Gabriela Těthalová. Gabriela Těthalová graduated from Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, Painting / Drawing at Prof. Jutta Koether and Prof. Dr. Bettina Uppenkam in September 2020 and was e.g. represented at Academy POSITIONS 2020 in Berlin. Her aim is to expand the field of painting while commenting on the contemporaneity. Before she decided to become an artist, she completed a master’s degree in Mathematics at Charles University in Prague. In addition to this interdisciplinary position, Těthalová often finds inspiration in other artistic forms such as music, poetry, or art history. Some of the recurring themes in her work are repetition and anachronism. Native Lights is a weekly, half-hour radio program hosted by Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe members and siblings, Leah Lemm and Cole Premo. Native Lights is a space for people in Native communities around Mni Sota Mkoce -- a.k.a. Minnesota -- to tell their stories about finding their gifts and sharing them with the community.On today’s show, Leah and Cole talk with well-known Anishinaabe artist and graphic designer, Steve Premo (Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe), who is also their uncle!  Steve Premo is married to Ojibwe historian and author Brenda Child (Red Lake Nation) who has also been a guest on Native Lights.Steve Premo shares how he first discovered his passion for drawing, as a child while bed-bound and recovering from an injury, he first found his flair for drawing and painting. Alison Jardine is a British artist and author who lives and works in Dallas. A native of Yorkshire, Alison received an undergraduate degree from the University of London and her MFA from the University of North Texas. Her work spans a broad range of disciplines, including electronic media, sculpture and painting. Her most recent work (Objects From a Future Past) uses concrete cast in sagging, found materials to create reliefs that comment on the notion of the modern landscape. Alison has had video installations featured in Dallas’s Aurora Festival, as well as being named a Finalist for the 2016 Hunting Art Prize for Painting & Drawing. She is a Fellow of the Hambidge Center of Arts & Science, as well as the founder of the Dallas Arboretum Artist in Residence program. She is also author of the book Make Great Art on the iPad which is available through all major book retailers. Alison is represented in Dallas by Erin Cluley Gallery. I recently sat down with Alison at her studio space within a converted cotton gin in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas where we discussed her life in the UK, her decision to become an artist, her art-making process and making room for experimentation.

Alessandra is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and Indiana University, and this fall is beginning her 7th year of teaching drawing and painting at her new job at Winona State University. Danielle Head received her BA in Film, Photography and Video from Hampshire College in 2007, and her MFA in Photography from Indiana University in 2011. She is currently Assistant Professor of Photography at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Her teaching focuses on bridging together analog and digital media in the photography classroom and emphasizes photography as a conceptual and fine art medium.

Haley Josephs was born in 1987 in Seattle, Washington and spent her formative years in the city of Pittsburgh. She received her BFA in Painting & Drawing from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2011 and her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2014.  She also studied abroad in Italy at Temple University in Rome and again at the American Academy in Rome. Haley has exhibited locally and internationally.  She was included in Painting Forward at Thomas Erben Gallery in 2016, Too Much of a Good Thing at the Basilica Hudson in Hudson, NY, and had her first solo exhibition, Civil Twilight, at Deli Gallery in Long Island City last spring.  She currently lives and works in Brooklyn where Brian met up with Haley and they spoke about our mutual early years growing up in Pittsburgh, the Warhol effect, color nostalgia and the value of listening to yourself in the studio.

Dax holds a BFA in Painting/Drawing from the California College of Arts & Crafts and an MFA in Performance from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A freelance illustrator for the last dozen years, Dax has also been a Course Director of academic drawing at Ex'pression College for Digital Art and Company Apprentice to Blair Thomas & Co. chamber puppet theater, with whom he performed at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art among other venues. He has been an artist in residence for the Tinkering Studio at the Exploratorium, and his cardboard artwork has been commissioned by the Exploratorium and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as well as being featured in The Art of Tinkering (2014). His forays into sequential art go back to 2004, in the form of cantastoria, which are currently performed under the title Villainette. Shifting gears away from live performance, Failing Sky is his first attempt at a graphic novel, and was nominated for an Eisner Award within six months of publication.
