Struggling to get your art in front of the right people? Then this episode is your roadmap. Join multidisciplinary artist Courtney Minor on "This Is How We Create" as she unveils the emotional underpinnings of her creative journey—from finding fresh inspiration in Vietnam to transforming personal therapy into powerful art. Courtney doesn't just inspire; she delivers actionable strategies for marketing your work, building a devoted email list, experimenting with unexpected materials, and connecting with collectors who truly value your vision. This isn't just about making art—it's about making making a place for your art in the world Here's what we discuss: Courtney Minor is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in collage, photography, and film. Her trip to Vietnam was a pivotal moment that reignited her creative spark. Art serves as a therapeutic outlet for Courtney, helping her express emotions she struggles to verbalize. She combines various mediums, including collage and graffiti, to convey her messages. Courtney's journey reflects the importance of embracing one's identity and creative voice.  Courtney creates prototypes in her head before starting. She collects artifacts and photographs for inspiration. Plexiglass allows viewers to see their reflection in her work. Prototyping is essential for her larger art pieces. Sourcing materials often involves unconventional places like Home Depot. Understanding her audience has been crucial for her sales. Building an email list is vital for artist outreach. Social media algorithms reward video content over static images. Connecting all platforms is important for artist visibility. Artwork Archive simplifies the inventory process for artists.   Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Courtney Minor and Her Art Journey 02:04 The Turning Point: Vietnam Trip and Creative Rebirth 12:08 Childhood Influences and Early Artistic Aspirations 16:57 Emotional Expression Through Art: The Therapeutic Process 20:06 Navigating Personal Loss and Its Impact on Creativity 30:03 The Artistic Process: From Emotion to Creation 31:07 The Art of Prototyping 36:47 From Ideas to Canvas 40:01 Sourcing Materials for Art 43:13 Marketing and Selling Art 55:26 Exploring New Mediums and Techniques   Get to know Courtney: https://thecmdstudio.com/pages/copy-of-about-courtney-minor  Courtney's Instagram: heyitscourtneyminor  Buy Courtney's Art: https://thecmdstudio.com/collections    Keep up with your host Martine Severin https://martineseverin.com/ Follow This Is How We Create https://www.instagram.com/thisishowwecreate_/ Subscribe to our Newsletter: https://martineseverin.substack.com Follow Martine on Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/martine.severin/   This is How We Create is produced and edited by Martine Severin. Diane Burko's work in painting, photography, and time-based media considers the marks that human conversations make on the landscape. A Professor Emerita of the Community College of Philadelphia with additional teaching experience at Princeton University, Burko has received multiple grants from the NEA, the Pennsylvania Arts Council, the Leeway Foundation and the Independence Foundation. She has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women's Caucus for Art. After focusing for several decades on monumental geological formations and waterways through landscape painting, Burko has shifted in the past 20 years to analyze the impact of industrial and colonial activity on those same landscapes. Burko's practice seeks to visually emulsify interconnected subjects– extraction, deforestation, extinction, environmental justice, indigenous genocide, ecological degradation, climate collapse– so viewers might feel their connection viscerally through the beauty of her work. While her work deals with impending climate catastrophe, rather than lingering in dystopia, it celebrates the sublimity of the landscape by honoring the intricate geological and political webs that shape the identity of a place. Burko has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally, including shows at London's Royal Academy of Art, Minneapolis Art Institute, National Academy of Sciences, Phillips Collection, RISD Museum Tang Museum, Wesleyan University Center for the Arts, and the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. She has been awarded residencies in Giverny, Bellagio, the Arctic Circle, and the Amazon Rainforest. In 2021, her solo exhibition Seeing Climate Change at the American University Museum was cited in the New York Times as one of the best shows of 2021. Her most recent solo show, Diane Burko: Bearing Witness, open January 31 to March 8, 2025 at Cristin Tierney Gallery was her first solo exhibition in New York in over 40 years. Throughout her practice, Burko especially cherishes her collaborations with researchers in the sciences. She learns the most from “bearing witness” to the land. “You never know someone else's story. You never know what the experience of a concert or hearing a piece is to somebody. You don't know how that affects them. So much of my music and why I do what I do is to facilitate these moments of connection between choristers, to give autonomy to choristers to feel like co-composers of my music themselves each time they're performing the work. I always tend to seek out music, texts, stories, ideas that facilitate that.”Composer, improviser, and vocalist Katerina Gimon's uniquely dynamic, poignant, and eclectic compositional style has earned her a reputation as a distinct voice in contemporary Canadian composition and beyond. Her music has earned her several honours including multiple SOCAN Awards, nominations for Western Canadian Composer of the Year, and a Barbara Pentland Award for Outstanding Composition. In her music, Katerina draws influence from a myriad of places — from the Ukrainian folk music of her heritage to indie rock, as well as from her roots as a songwriter. Her compositions are performed widely across Canada, the United States, and internationally, with notable performances at Carnegie Hall, Berliner Philharmonie, and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Recent commissions include new music for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Youth Choir, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and re:Naissance Opera. Katerina is the composer-in-residence for Myriad Ensemble and is based in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia. In addition to her composing work, Katerina is also a founding member (vocalist, electronics, co-composer) of dynamic new music and AR/VR collective Chroma Mixed Media alongside multi-media artists David Storen and Brian Topp. Excited by the ever-evolving landscape of technology in today's society, Chroma endeavours to explore new avenues and intersections for artistic expression by combining various art forms and new technologies to explore new possibilities and challenge audience expectations.Katerina holds a Master of Music in Composition from the University of British Columbia ('17) and an Honours Bachelor of Music degree in Composition and Improvisation from Wilfrid Laurier University ('15). In this episode, we dive into the joys of using mixed media—a playground for curiosity and creativity. We explore the fun (and challenges) of mixing materials, textures, and techniques, from graphic edges paired with loose lines to playful contrasts of smooth and rough textures. But it's not all carefree: many artists find themselves relying on external materials, like magazine clippings or vintage photos, which can sometimes raise the question, "Am I enough without this?" So, when is mixed media a tool for experimentation and trust-building? And when does it become a safe zone, holding us back from bolder artistic leaps? We are thrilled to be back with a new episode of the Hyperallergic podcast. For our one hundredth episode, we spoke with legendary collage and mixed media artist Tommy Lannigan-Schmidt. His works, made from crinkly saran wrap and tin foil, emulate the gleam of precious metals and jewels in Catholic iconography. They reference his upbringing as a working class kid and altar boy in a Catholic community in Linden, New Jersey, where tin foil was an expensive luxury they could rarely afford. But they also hold memories of where he found himself as a teenager: the LBGTQ+ street life and art community of New York City, which led to his participation in the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. Lanigan-Schmidt is as much a visual artist as he is a storyteller. We climbed up to his fourth floor walk-up in Hell's Kitchen, where, surrounded by teetering piles of books and artwork, he regaled us with tales about artists like Jack Smith and Andy Warhol, his decision to leave his hometown as a penniless teenager, his steadfast identity as a working class artist, his conversion to Russian Orthodox Christianity, what changed for gay artists in New York between the 1960s and today, and of course, his recollection of that historic night at the Stonewall. We know you'll enjoy this artist's sparkling humor and singular vision as he shares reflections on his life and this critical moment in history. We also talked with Ann Bausum, author of Stonewall, Breaking Out in the Fight for Gay Rights, about the significance of the uprising. She also shared some of her own first-hand recollections of segregation in 1960s America. The music in this episode was written by Garen Gueyikian, with the exception of one track by Dr. Delight, courtesy of Soundstripe. A selection of Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt's work will be on display at a show titled Open Hands: Crafting the Spiritual at Saint Louis University's Museum of Contemporary Religious Art until May 19, 2024. (00:00) - Intro (02:31) - Ann / Hrag (13:58) - Intro to Tommy (15:49) - Tommy / Hrag (01:30:05) - Outro Related Links:Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt's 2012-2013 solo show at MoMA PS1, Tender Love Among the JunkLanigan-Schmidt's work at Pavel Zoubok Fine ArtGay and Proud, the 1970 film which documented a demonstration on Christopher Street on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, excerpted in this episode starting at 14:39Stonewall: Breaking Out in the Fight for Gay Rights by Ann BausumWatch Flaming Creatures by Jack SmithDr. Wendy Schaller on Feast of St. Nicholas by Jan SteenAndy Warhol's portrait of Holly SolomonMario Banana, an Andy Warhol film with Mario Montez—Subscribe to Hyperallergic NewslettersBecome a member
