In a fascinating and insightful discussion, I sat down with Dr. Jon Brudvig, a medical scientist and expert in neuroscience and drug development. Together, we explored the science of aging, the critical role of cellular recycling, and the practical steps anyone can take to improve their healthspan. Jon Brudvig shared his journey from rare disease research to longevity science, offering actionable insights into how our daily choices impact the aging process. Such a good conversation, I have split it into two parts. What You'll Learn: The Cellular Foundation of Aging:Discover how Dr. Brudvig’s research into lysosomal storage diseases led him to understand the universal decline in cellular recycling (autophagy and lysosomal function) as a key driver of aging. Autophagy Explained:Learn why autophagy—the body’s process of breaking down and recycling damaged cellular components—is essential for health, and how modern lifestyles can disrupt this natural cycle. The Fundamentals of Longevity:Understand why exercise, diet, sleep, vitamin D, omega-3s, and real-life social connections are the true building blocks of a long and healthy life. Mouse Models and Human Longevity:Gain perspective on the limitations of animal studies in longevity research, and why findings in mice don’t always translate directly to humans. The mTOR Pathway and Protein Intake:Explore the debate around the mTOR pathway, protein consumption, and how balancing periods of growth and rest may be the key to optimal aging. Healthspan vs. Lifespan:Reflect on the difference between living longer and living better, and why increasing your years of good health (healthspan) is a more realistic and valuable goal than chasing extreme longevity. Key Takeaways: Aging is cellular: The decline in lysosomal and autophagy function is a core driver of aging and disease. Autophagy matters: Fasting, exercise, and periodic stressors help trigger the body’s natural recycling processes. Master the basics: Exercise, a balanced diet, quality sleep, and strong social ties are the most effective longevity interventions. Be cautious with quick fixes: Not all supplements or drugs that work in mice will work in humans—focus on proven fundamentals first. Balance is key: Intermittent activation of growth pathways (like mTOR) through meals and exercise, balanced with periods of rest, supports healthy aging. Protein quality counts: Mix your protein sources and prioritise whole foods for optimal health outcomes. Welcome back to Casting Actors Cast, the podcast for actors who want to sharpen their audition skills, book more roles, and understand the industry from the inside out. Today we're diving into a genre that's deceptively challenging, yet absolutely essential for so many working actors: Romantic Comedies and Hallmark-style films. These projects have their own flavor—light, charming, heartfelt, and often sprinkled with humor and predictability. But here's the catch: what works in a dramatic audition often doesn't work here. If you overplay the depth, you miss the levity. If you underplay it, you risk seeming flat or uninspired. So, how do you strike that perfect balance? In this episode, we'll explore the hallmarks of rom-com acting—the specific skill set that helps actors shine in both auditions and on set. Whether you're preparing for a Hallmark Christmas movie or a witty rom-com pilot, you'll walk away with practical tools to deliver the style directors and casting directors are looking for. In this episode, Josh unpacks the four layers of anxiety—psychological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral—highlighting why avoidance is the key feature that transforms ordinary worry into disorder. He explains why he continues to treat OCD and PTSD as anxiety conditions despite their DSM-5 reclassification, and he draws important distinctions between worries versus worrying and thoughts versus thinking. The discussion explores health anxiety, illness anxiety, and the impact of modern contributors such as wearables, social media, and the COVID era, while weaving in real-world case studies and Josh's structured assessment approach. Josh also breaks down evidence-based treatments, from exposure therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), along with the role of medication, lifestyle factors, and how shifting from avoidance to committed action can build long-term resilience. In fact, mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the 12 Hallmarks of Aging.    In this episode of Pretty Well, I'm breaking down how these tiny powerhouses inside your cells control everything from how you age to how well you think, move, and recover. We'll cover 9 evidence-based ways to protect your mitochondria and even boost mitochondrial biogenesis (fancy for “make more of the good stuff”) so that you can slow and even reverse signs of aging. From red light therapy and fasting options to targeted nutrients and why your mitochondria love colorful veggies more than you do—this is the anti-aging roadmap you actually want to follow. No gimmicks, no $400 serums. Just real tools to feel younger, stronger, and sharper from the inside out. Because aging is inevitable—but doing it tired, inflamed, and foggy is not. Angela talks to Stuart Sandeman about the profound impact of breath on our emotional and physical well-being. They explore how trauma and life experiences can manifest in our bodies, particularly through breathing patterns, and discuss the importance of breathwork in releasing stored tension and emotions. Stuart also shares his personal journey of grief following the loss of his girlfriend and how breathwork helped him process his emotions. KEY TAKEAWAYS Breath and Emotion Connection: The way we breathe is closely linked to our emotional state. Short, shallow breathing often correlates with feelings of anxiety or fear, while deeper, more expansive breathing is associated with feelings of calm and joy. Breathing Archetypes: Individuals have different breathing patterns or archetypes that reflect their emotional and psychological states.  Impact of Trauma on Breath: Traumatic experiences can lead to physical tension and altered breathing patterns. This tension is often held in specific areas of the body Breathwork for Emotional Release: Engaging in breathwork can facilitate the release of stored emotions and trauma TIMESTAMPS AND KEY TOPICS [00:02:01] Breath and emotional release. Chris Mirabile's journey to achieving a biological age 13.6 years younger than his chronological age is not a tale of luck but of deliberate action and deep scientific understanding. His transformation extends beyond mere youthful appearance. He's aging 31% slower than average.  This remarkable feat is rooted in intense self-education and a disciplined lifestyle geared towards optimizing health at a molecular level. His story began at 16, when a severe seizure led to the discovery and surgical removal of a brain tumor. This life-altering event shifted his focus from basic fitness to a profound understanding of human biology and aging. A Scientific Awakening Chris transitioned from merely wanting to look fit to optimizing his long-term well-being. Utilizing academic databases like PubMed, he educated himself on the science of aging and its biological processes. The "Hallmarks of Aging" paper was a turning point, revealing aging not as inevitable, but as a series of manageable biological processes. This realization drove him to a proactive approach to health, aiming to manage and slow aging. Targeting the 12 Aging Mechanisms Today, Chris's lifestyle and biotechnology company NOVOS are structured around the 12 mechanisms that drive aging. Here's a quick look at how he addresses each: Mitochondrial Dysfunction: Enhanced through exercise and specific nutrients. Cellular Senescence: Reduced via supplements and fasting. Loss of Proteostasis: Improved by autophagy-activating practices. Intercellular Communication: Maintained by limiting inflammation. Genomic Instability: Addressed with hormetic stress like cold exposure. Epigenetic Alterations: Supported with lifestyle changes. Telomere Shortening: Minimized with diet and recovery. Deregulated Nutrient Sensing: Balanced through feeding/fasting cycles. Stem Cell Exhaustion: Preserved with low-inflammation living. Inflammaging: Reduced with anti-inflammatory strategies. Disabled Autophagy: Enhanced by intermittent fasting and polyphenols. Gut Dysbiosis: Improved through diet diversity and probiotics. By targeting these mechanisms, Chris actively works to slow and even reverse biological aging. Lifestyle as Medicine For Chris, lifestyle is the foundation of health optimization. His daily routine reflects the principles he has gleaned from his research. His diet follows a Mediterranean model, emphasizing whole plants, healthy fats, and moderate protein. He integrates periodic fasting to optimize longevity pathways. His exercise regimen is multifaceted, combining resistance training four times a week, cardio three times a week, and daily walking. Sleep is prioritized, with seven to nine hours tracked via the Oura Ring. Stress management is crucial, as well as incorporating journaling, meditation, and reframing challenges as opportunities for growth. He also utilizes specific supplements, such as NOVOS Core, developed from biotech research to support the hallmarks of aging. NOVOS: Measuring and Managing Aging NOVOS embodies Chris's belief in the scientific manageability of aging. The company offers precise formulations like NOVOS Core, which has shown lifespan extension in animal studies, and biological age testing via epigenetic analysis. The NOVOS Life app provides digital guidance, using AI to generate personalized longevity plans and estimate biological age, making longevity accessible and manageable. In this podcast, you'll learn... How Chris Mirabile reduced his biological age by 13.6 years and its importance. The 12 aging mechanisms Chris targets with NOVOS. Practical lifestyle adjustments for longevity, including diet, exercise, and stress management. The role of scientific innovation in managing aging. In this mind-expanding episode, Angela sits down with Anne-Laure Le Cunff—founder of Ness Labs and author of Tiny Experiments—to explore how small tests rooted in curiosity can lead to powerful transformations in every area of your life. From alcohol-free living to productivity hacks, sleep rhythms, and navigating health advice in the age of information overwhelm, this conversation will shift your perspective on goal-setting and self-optimization. Anne-Laure shares why most people get stuck trying to rationalize decisions instead of following data from their own lived experience—and how becoming an “agent of change” helps us reclaim control in an ever-changing world. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The Problem with Pros & Cons Lists: We often use them to justify decisions we've already made rather than explore truth objectively. How to Run Tiny Experiments: Focus on curiosity, one measurable variable, and a fixed timeframe to discover what truly works for you. Why Habit Challenges Often Fail: Without curiosity and internal motivation, behavior doesn’t shift—experimentation creates sustainable change. Letting Go of Epic Goals: Big dreams can be paralyzing—often, purpose and passion emerge through action, not planning. How to Reverse Biological Age, Balance Hormones & Slow Down Ageing—The Power of Glycans for Women's Health | Nikolina Lauc

High Performance Health

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 27, 2025 61:28

Angela dives deep with special guest Nikolina Lauc on the subject of biological aging and the role of glycans in our immune system. They discuss how glycans, complex sugars that coat our cells, influence our biological aging and immune function, particularly in the context of chronic inflammation. Nikolina explains the differences between various biological age tests, such as telomere and methylation testing, highlighting the advantages of glycan testing for individual assessments. KEY TAKEAWAYS Glycans are complex sugars that play a crucial role in cellular communication and immune function. They influence biological aging by affecting inflammation and immune responses, with changes in glycan patterns indicating shifts in health status over time. Biological age can differ significantly from chronological age, as it reflects the state of one's immune system and overall health. Glycan testing provides a more accurate measure of biological age, allowing individuals to understand their health trajectory better. Chronic stress, whether from work or personal life, can accelerate biological aging. Lifestyle factors such as exercise, sleep, and nutrition significantly influence glycan profiles, with moderate exercise being beneficial while excessive training can lead to increased inflammation. Women experience a notable acceleration in biological aging during perimenopause due to declining estrogen levels, which can lead to increased inflammation. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help mitigate this effect and improve glycan age. BEST MOMENTS "Glycans are complex sugars... Most of our molecules have glycans as a component, so all cells are coated in these complex sugars." "Bad news is also good news if you're looking at the glycan perspective, because we would see these different glycosylation patterns change up to 10 years prior to symptoms." "Stress is in your mind or it's a mind response... We're the only species that can create this fight or flight without actually having to run from a lion." Metabolic Freedom: The Missing Key to Fat Loss, Energy & Hormonal Balance | Ben Azadi

High Performance Health

Angela welcomes back Ben Azadi, author of the new book "Metabolic Freedom" to delve into the critical differences between metabolic freedom and the common state of metabolic prison, where individuals are trapped in a cycle of sugar burning and insulin resistance. Ben shares insights from his extensive research, stressing the importance of maintaining balanced blood sugar levels and the role of muscle mass in enhancing insulin sensitivity, while Angela recounts her personal journey with PCOS and how dietary changes transformed her health. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many individuals are trapped in a "metabolic prison," primarily burning sugar for energy, which can lead to insulin resistance and various health issues. In contrast, metabolic freedom allows the body to efficiently switch between burning sugar and fat, promoting better energy levels and overall health. High insulin levels are a precursor to metabolic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease. Regular testing of fasting insulin levels is crucial for assessing metabolic health, with optimal levels being in the single digits. Increasing muscle mass through strength training enhances insulin sensitivity and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Maintaining muscle as one ages can prevent metabolic slowdown and promote better health outcomes. Focusing solely on calorie counting can be misleading. Instead, prioritizing the quality of food—such as whole, unprocessed foods—can lead to better hormonal balance and overall health, making weight loss a natural side effect of improved health. Chronic stress can lead to elevated cortisol levels, which promote fat storage and hinder fat burning. Managing stress through various methods, including exercise and mindfulness, is essential for maintaining metabolic health and overall well-being. BEST MOMENTS "Unfortunately, most people are in a metabolic prison. They're handcuffed by food in order to have some short energy... when you are stuck burning sugar, it's not a fun way to live." "I think the misconception is that if we don't have good control of our metabolism, then we're going to look overweight. I certainly didn't... I was slim and fit and looked fine." "High levels of insulin... it's the first domino to fall that leads to all these metabolic diseases. It starts with high blood pressure, you start gaining weight, and then it's pre-diabetes." "We have a slight advantage insofar as we have a menstrual cycle and we can check what's going on... I think that maybe we're a little more conscious of our health because we get these signs." Spermidine: The Anti-Aging Molecule Every Perimenopausal Woman Should Know About | Leslie Kenny

Angela talks to Leslie Kenny, about the fascinating world of longevity and health optimisation. Leslie, a renowned expert in the field, shares her personal journey of reversing her biological age to 21 at the age of 59, focussing upon the importance of a multifactorial approach to aging that includes diet, movement, sleep, and social connection. Together Angela and Leslie discuss the often-overlooked significance of sleep and social interactions, as well as the role of the microbiome in health. Leslie also introduces the powerful compound spermidine, found in various plant-based foods, and its benefits for autophagy, immune health, and even hair pigmentation KEY TAKEAWAYS Focus on diet, movement, sleep, and social connection to optimise health and longevity. Prioritising sleep is particularly crucial for reducing risks associated with Alzheimer's and dementia. Each individual has a unique microbiome influenced by their ancestry, which affects how they process different foods. Identifying and removing personal dietary "kryptonite" (foods that trigger negative responses) while incorporating beneficial foods is essential for optimal health. This compound, found in various plant-based foods, activates autophagy, a cellular renewal process. Increasing spermidine intake can support gut health, immune function, and even hair pigmentation by promoting the growth phase of hair follicles. Fasting can have different effects on men and women, particularly during perimenopause. Women may experience negative hormonal changes and stress responses from prolonged fasting, making it essential to find alternative ways to stimulate autophagy, such as through spermidine supplementation. BEST MOMENTS "Aging is a multifactorial problem, so it needs to be solved with a multifactorial approach. Focus on these four pillars: diet, movement, sleep, and social connection." "The more plants we can get into our diet, the better, both for fiber and because there are lots of polyphenols... spermidine activates that cell renewal process known as autophagy." "The greater the diversity of the gut biome, the healthier the person is, the more resilient the microbiome is and able to respond to challenges." "When we think about fasting... it isn't always suitable for women, particularly those in high-stress jobs or going through perimenopausal transition." Refusing to accept this prognosis, she transformed her health by eliminating inflammatory triggers and supporting her body’s natural healing. Now 59, she has the biological age of 21, is autoimmune disease-free, and naturally conceived at 43. Empowered by her health journey, she returned to school, became a certified Bulletproof coach and began working with Oxford University scientists, helping them raise funding for their groundbreaking research. In a meeting with Professor Katja Simon, she discovered spermidine, a powerful, natural compound dubbed as an “anti-aging vitamin” and found to “delay aging in humans” through its ability to activate autophagy (cell renewal) and target key aging pathways. Recognizing its potential, she founded Oxford Healthspan, launching Primeadine®, a plant-derived spermidine supplement, with the highest quality, Japanese ingredients and the backing of top scientific and clinical advisors. She also collaborated with University of Oxford academics to co-found a non-profit organization, called the Oxford Longevity Project, dedicated to educating the public on easy, actionable ways to improve their healthspan and longevity. oxfordhealthspan.com lesliesnewprime.com oxfordlongevityproject.org https://www.instagram.com/oxfordhealthspan/ https://www.instagram.com/lesliesnewprime/ https://www.instagram.com/oxfordlongevityproject/ ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster is an award winning Nutritionist, Health & Performance Coach, Speaker and Host of the High Performance Health podcast.
