The conviction of former SNP Chief Executive Peter Murrell has sent shockwaves through Scottish politics and raised serious questions about financial oversight, leadership responsibility and public trust. In this episode of Crime Time Inc., former detectives Tom Wood and Simon McLean examine the embezzlement case that dominated headlines across Scotland. Drawing on decades of investigative experience, they explore how breaches of trust develop, why embezzlement often goes undetected for years, and what warning signs organisations frequently miss.Tom and Simon compare the SNP case with real investigations from their policing careers, including thefts involving trusted employees, family-run businesses and compulsive offenders whose behaviour defied logic. They discuss the difference between crimes driven by need, greed and psychological compulsion, and analyse the extraordinary purchasing patterns revealed during the investigation. The conversation also turns to leadership accountability, internal financial controls, governance failures and the responsibilities of those entrusted with managing large organisations and public donations. In the second half of the episode, the hosts address the tragic rise in child and teenage drowning deaths across the UK. They discuss water safety, cold water shock, risk-taking behaviour among young people, and whether schools and parents are doing enough to prepare children for everyday dangers.A thought-provoking discussion on crime, trust, responsibility and the lessons that organisations and families ignore at their peril. The discussion also examines the wider implications of Operation Branchform, the investigation into Scottish National Party finances, and the questions raised about oversight during the leadership of Nicola Sturgeon. Drawing on their experience as former detectives, Tom Wood and Simon McLean provide insight into how fraud investigations develop, why financial controls fail, and what lessons organisations can learn from high-profile cases. The episode concludes with an important discussion on water safety, drowning prevention and the risks of cold water immersion.Chapters00:00 Introduction to the SNP Embezzlement Case01:20 How Embezzlement Typically Begins05:44 A Detective's Real-Life £74,000 Theft Investigation09:40 Need, Greed and Compulsive Theft16:37 The Strange Psychology of Criminal Behaviour18:45 Comparing Major Financial Crime Cases21:14 Leadership Accountability and Governance Failures23:58 Water Safety and Preventable Tragedies25:46 Why Young People Are Most at Risk28:13 The Green Cross Code and Safety LessonsAbout Crime Time Inc.Season 5 of Crime Time Inc. broadens its reach across two sides of the Atlantic. This season features cases from Scotland and across the wider UK — rooted in real investigative experience — alongside deep dives into some of the most infamous murder cases in American history.Hosted by former detectives Simon and Tom, with experience in both the UK and the United States, including time working alongside the FBI, the show strips away sensationalism to explain how crime and justice really work. Two crime worlds. In this episode of Crime Time Inc, hosts Tom Wood and Simon McLean join researcher Alex to continue their deep dive into the Zodiac killer case, turning their attention from the evidence itself to the deeply human story behind one of the most enduring suspects — a man whose abandoned son became convinced his estranged father was the infamous serial killer. Tom, drawing on decades of experience as a senior investigating officer on cases including the World's End murders and the Robert Black abductions, offers a compelling psychological perspective on why family members of terrible people sometimes come forward to link their relatives to high-profile unsolved crimes. As he explains, these individuals are rarely faking it; they genuinely believe what they're saying, driven by a deep need to make sense of the cruelty they experienced. It's a way of externalising their pain, of finding an explanation grand enough to account for the abandonment and neglect they suffered. The conversation opens up into a broader and thought-provoking discussion about the exploitation of serious crime. Simon raises the uncomfortable truth that bestselling books, films, and television programmes have been built on the back of cases like the Zodiac, Jack the Ripper, and countless others — an industry where there is, as Tom puts it, no quality control and no board of censors. With the rise of artificial intelligence, the hosts note, the barrier to producing speculative true crime content has never been lower. It's a candid moment of self-awareness from two men who make their living in the genre, and they handle it with characteristic honesty and humour.Tom takes the opportunity to share the remarkable story behind his own book, *Ruxton: The First Modern Murder*, recounting how a bundle of case papers — tied with the original pink police tape, unread for over eighty years — was discovered in a Portobello attic and eventually found its way to his desk. The documents, belonging to a deceased Edinburgh CID detective, contained a wealth of new information about a well-known case and told the story of an ordinary county police sergeant who, with no resources and no CID experience, did extraordinary investigative work. It's a story that underscores a theme that has run through Crime Time Inc from the very beginning: the critical importance of protecting and properly investigating the crime scene, a principle as vital today as it was in 1935. Simon also teases his forthcoming novel, *Kintyre*, which Tom reports he has read in excerpt and enjoyed very much. The episode closes with a forward-looking discussion about cold case responsibility. Tom poses the question of who, if anyone, is still actively investigating the Zodiac murders, and whether modern forensic advances have ever been applied to the original evidence. He draws a parallel with the ongoing Police Scotland search for the remains of Renee MacRae and her young son — a case that is solved and whose perpetrator is dead, yet where the duty to victims' families compels continued work. The hosts reflect on the value of structures like Police Scotland's Homicide Review Board and wonder whether any equivalent systematic review has ever been applied to the full range of killings attributed to the Zodiac. It's a fitting end to an episode that balances sharp investigative thinking with genuine humanity, and listeners are reminded that the Zodiac series will continue with further suspects and a full case summary in upcoming episodes.Zodiac Killer, Zodiac Killer podcast, Zodiac murders, unsolved serial killer, true crime podcast, Zodiac suspects, Zodiac evidence, San Francisco murders, 1960s serial killer, cold case investigation, Zodiac cipher, true crime analysis, Zodiac Killer theory, unsolved mysteries, crime podcast, serial killer case study, Zodiac Killer identity, true crime storytelling, criminal investigation, famous unsolved casesAbout Crime Time Inc.Season 5 of Crime Time Inc. broadens its reach across two sides of the Atlantic. In this episode of Crime Time Inc, hosts Tom Wood and Simon McLean take a detailed look at Gary Francis Post as a suspect in the Zodiac killer case, continuing their in-depth series on one of America's most enduring unsolved mysteries. Before diving into the main discussion, the pair share some entertaining memories of police life — the Glasgow dairies and Edinburgh bakeries that served as unofficial gathering spots for officers, the camaraderie with A&E nurses at the Western General Hospital on the night shift, and some memorably brutal lines from staff appraisals. It's a warm, unguarded exchange that captures the culture of policing in Scotland during their era, and a reminder that even in a true crime podcast, the human side of the job matters. The heart of the episode is a rigorous, experience-driven analysis of Post as a Zodiac suspect and the work of the so-called "case breakers" who championed him. Tom and Simon walk through the circumstantial evidence — Post's military background, his time in the San Francisco Bay Area, claimed cipher interpretations spelling out his name, reports of domestic violence, and familiarity with firearms — and systematically weigh each element. Tom, drawing on decades as a senior investigator and his FBI secondment at Quantico, is characteristically measured but skeptical. He notes that firearms familiarity was near-universal among American men of that generation, that access to military PX stores was hardly exclusive, and that the behavioural profile doesn't fit: serial offenders of this type rarely just stop and settle into quiet domestic life. Simon reinforces the point that the evidence supporting Post is almost entirely subjective or speculative, and crucially, that law enforcement investigating the Zodiac case showed no interest in Post — a telling sign given their otherwise fastidious approach to other suspects.A standout theme of the episode is the concept of elimination in major crime investigation. Tom explains, with the authority of someone who led the World's End murders inquiry and spent years on the Susan Maxwell and Vicky Hamilton cases, that elimination must meet an even higher standard than prosecution — you need to be one hundred per cent certain it is not the suspect. He illustrates this vividly with the Emma Caldwell case, where a suspect initially appeared to have a cast-iron alibi of being in prison, only for investigators to discover he had been released on weekend leave at the time of the murder. The discussion also highlights how DNA evidence, so central to Tom's work on the World's End case — explored fully in his bestselling book *The World's End Murders: The Inside Story* (Ringwood Publishing, 2024) — serves as much to clear the innocent as to convict the guilty. It's a nuanced point that underscores why the Zodiac case, with its degraded and poorly preserved forensic evidence, remains so frustratingly unresolved. The episode closes on a lighter note, with Tom revealing he saw the Beatles live in Edinburgh in their very early days, and Simon ribbing him about Paul McCartney's stolen left-handed guitar — a nod to Simon's well-known friendship with McCartney dating back to his days as a young officer in Campbeltown. The pair tease future episodes, including a Zodiac series roundup and a possible deep dive into the Emma Caldwell case, giving listeners plenty to look forward to.About Crime Time Inc.Season 5 of Crime Time Inc. broadens its reach across two sides of the Atlantic. Old Firm Disorder, Glasgow Fire, and Lessons from Huntley: Policing, Enforcement, and True Crime InsightsIn a wide-ranging chat, Simon and former senior Scottish police officer Tom Wood discuss Tom's new book-editing process and then focus on recent disorder around the Rangers–Celtic Old Firm match, arguing sectarian hatred still simmers and questioning reduced police presence, reliance on stewards, and proposals to reintroduce alcohol at stadiums. They link football violence, gate-crashing, and disguised fans to broader issues of enforcement, funding cuts, and lost “organisational memory.” The conversation shifts to a major Glasgow city-centre fire at an iconic corner, suggesting existing regulations are adequate but under-enforced due to hollowed-out local authorities and reduced inspection capacity, with concern about vape shops and illicit activity. They reflect on the Soham murders by Ian Huntley and the Bichard Inquiry's lessons on intelligence-sharing failures, compare offender secrecy to Angus Sinclair, note a new near-miss account related to Robert Black, and briefly preview London's policing challenge after banning the Al Quds march.00:00 Book Editing Grind00:44 Old Firm Violence Returns01:45 Policing vs Stewarding03:59 Alcohol Ban Debate07:52 Sectarianism and Rivalry11:49 Away Fans and Hooliganism14:51 Pickpockets at Matches16:46 Glasgow Fire and Neglect20:36 Vape Shops and Drug Parallels23:30 Smoking Ban Lessons23:49 Smoking Ban Success24:52 Vape Shop Fire Questions25:16 Enforcement Over New Laws26:34 Policing Vape Shops27:24 Pawn Shops and Beat Cops28:09 Madam Doubtfire Origins29:08 Glasgow Fair and Pawnbroking30:44 Soham Murders Lessons32:59 Killers Keeping Secrets36:27 Near Misses and Intel Logs40:10 Patterns in Minor Incidents41:37 Covering for Offenders42:29 Banning Marches in London46:42 Rugby and Sign OffAbout Crime Time Inc.Season 5 of Crime Time Inc. broadens its reach across two sides of the Atlantic. In this compelling episode of Crime Time Inc., the team convenes for an insightful live recording at the picturesque Three Craws venue in Scotland. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as hosts Simon, Tom Wood, and Jane Hamilton engage in a candid conversation about notorious serial killers who have left their grim mark on Scotland's history. Their discussion takes listeners deep into the heart of true crime, blending personal accounts, investigative strategies, and an analysis of the societal impact of these tragic stories. As the episode unfolds, Simon introduces Tom Wood, a seasoned former detective with a wealth of experience in major crime investigations, and Jane Hamilton, a distinguished crime reporter with a rich history of covering high-profile cases. The evening commemorates their substantial contributions to true crime journalism and the police force, as they recount the dark narratives surrounding three infamous figures: Robert Black, Angus Sinclair, and Peter Tobin. Each case not only highlights the chilling methodologies of these predators but also sheds light on the evolution of criminal investigation techniques and forensic science in Scotland. The first case revolves around Robert Black, a predatory paedophile responsible for the abduction and murders of young girls during the early 1980s. Simon and Tom delve into the distressing details of Black's modus operandi, discussing how his heinous acts transformed the public perception of child safety. Through intricate storytelling, the complexities of a multi-agency investigation come to light, illustrating the collaborative efforts of various police forces before breakthroughs in forensic technology eventually led to Black's apprehension. Tom's first-hand insights bring gravity to the narrative, as he recalls the emotional toll these cases exacted on the community and law enforcement alike.Transitioning smoothly, the conversation shifts to Angus Sinclair and the infamous World's End murders from 1977, where two young women went missing after a night out in Edinburgh. Tom passionately recounts the decades-long investigation that was ultimately resolved through a scientific breakthrough in DNA analysis. The episode highlights the incredible determination of law enforcement and the resilience of the victims' families. Tom emphasizes the importance of meticulous crime scene examination and how the preservation of evidence paved the way for justice even after 37 years.More to follow in part 2.#Crime Time Inc#Scotland#serial killers#Robert Black#Angus Sinclair#Peter Tobin#investigative techniques#DNA investigation#victims' families#true crimeAbout Crime Time Inc.Season 5 of Crime Time Inc. broadens its reach across two sides of the Atlantic. The leading forensic scientists from Scotland have traveled to the tiny village of Moffatt to examine the body parts discovered in a ravine by a sister and brother out hiking. Authorities do not yet know how many people were killed, or by what method, or where or when; they certainly do not know who the victims are. Whoever carried out this act of evil took great care to hide the victims' identities, dissecting them until they were beyond recognition. It will take a monumental, groundbreaking investigation to solve this gruesome puzzle. The first order of business is to collect the evidence and, lucky for all involved, the right policeman had arrived to do just that.Meanwhile, in the northern British town of Lancaster, we meet an unusual couple. He's a prim and proper doctor from Bombay, intent on becoming a true English gentleman. She's a charismatic, outgoing woman ahead of her time - perhaps dangerously so. Their romance appears to be the envy of everyone in town. But their passionate relationship swiftly turns to jealousy and violence. What, if anything, does this volatile domestic situation have to do with the bodies found in the ravine?"Beyond Recognition" hosted by Yeardley Smith, delves into one of the most shocking murder cases of the early 20th century. It's a crisp autumn morning in a serene Scottish town called Moffatt. A brother and sister have gone out for a stroll through the woods. As they cross an old stone bridge, they see something in the dry stream bed below. It appears to be a severed arm, the hand reaching up from the dirt. It looks like it's waving at them. To their horror, they learn the hand is just one of dozens of pieces of human remains scattered across the ravine. This grisly discovery, made on September 29, 1935, will trigger a murder investigation like something out of an Agatha Christie novel. News of the dismembered bodies and speculation of who they are and what happened to them, will draw the kind of global media coverage not seen since Jack the Ripper. The drive to solve the murders will spark a new era in crime scene management and forensic examination in what might very well be the first modern homicide investigation of the 20th century."Beyond Recognition" hosted by Yeardley Smith, delves into one of the most shocking murder cases of the early 20th century.
