Join Pastor Derek as he delves into the story of Jesus' first miracle: turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. This video explores the significance of this event as a sign of Jesus' divine power and its meaning for believers. Discover how this miracle symbolises transformation and the abundant life offered through faith in Christ. Pastor Walker explains the spiritual message behind the miracle, encouraging viewers to invite Jesus into their lives for a personal transformation. The first sign-miracle of Jesus in John 2 was turning water into wine, which was a demonstration of what He will do for us if we believe in Him. This is a picture of our New Birth and our ongoing transformation by the Spirit of God. The way this miracle happened shows that we must give Jesus the right to turn our water into wine, by submitting to His Lordship.

In this follow-up to our previous lesson on the symbolism of John Chapter 2, we examine the rich cultural and spiritual backdrop of the Wedding at Cana. What did John mean when he said it was the “third day”? At first glance, this might seem like a small detail, but when viewed through the lens of Jewish wedding traditions, it opens up a powerful layer of meaning that brings the Cana scene to life. In this lesson, we'll explore: - The cultural significance of weddings on the third day of the week in ancient Jewish practice - How these traditions align beautifully with the wedding at Cana - The symbolism behind the miracle of water turned into wine. - Parallels to ancient Near Eastern beliefs—especially how miracles like this one were seen as signs of a god's presence, as in the case of the Greek god Dionysus Ultimately, we'll see how this first “sign” reveals God's transformative power through Jesus, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

The master of the banquet tasted the good wine, but didn't know where it came from. He completely missed both the miracle and the divine love it revealed. How often do we do that?

“Race has become something that, in many homes, in many places, is encountered when you see it on the news,” says the Rev. Kareem Smith. “But to look at it as a gift, to see other people as a gift and what they have to offer as something that is beautiful—that is to see the creation of God.” On “Preach” this week, the Rev. Kareem Smith, pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Co-op City, the Bronx, reflects with host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., on the Gospel reading for the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time—the wedding at Cana. Connecting the scarcity of wine and the tension between Jesus and his mother to modern challenges like racial justice and political divides, Kareem points to the tension many feel as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Donald Trump's second inauguration fall on the same day, Jan. 20, 2025. “There's this breakdown in conversation,” he says of the state of the nation. “We desire to be heard, but are we failing to listen?” Kareem, who is also president of the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, emphasizes Mary's words—“Do whatever He tells you”—as a call to trust God to transform scarcity into abundance and view divisions as opportunities for renewal through humility and faith.
