Do you remember Tales of the Unexpected? This was a popular series on UK TV between 1979 and 1988. In each episode, everyday folk got caught up in surprising and bizarre stories. Each story ended with a twist. This story from the bible is similar. Rahab, a lowly prostitute, gets involved with hiding two spies from Joshua's Israelite army. She does a deal, involving hanging a crimson ribbon in her window, and the story ends with her and her family being saved from certain death. Maybe God wants to invite each of us into our very own episode of Tale of the Unexpected? In particular, like Rahab, maybe we are sometimes unexpectedly called to protect others? Family. Friends. Colleagues. Strangers.

Have you ever been too frightened to follow God's call on your life? That may be a big question, so let's put it another way. What is stopping you from God's leading and direction in your life? Maybe that's still too big a question. Another try. Do you realise that God can use you, even if you don't feel adequate? Ah, that may be easier to answer, and it was exactly what Moses thought when God spoke to him. Now, we may not encounter a burning bush or see a staff turned into a snake or be raised in royalty or indeed have committed murder, but for many other reasons, you might feel the same inadequacy before God. If, for whatever reason, you're hesitant about God's leading in your life, that's no excuse for how God might speak to you!

Send us a textAfter the Israelites escape the Egyptian army that pursued them, they find themselves in the desert. In one sense, this was expected since geographically and physically, Egypt was surrounded by the desert. Yet, the narratives in Exodus, just as in Genesis, are archetypal stories—that is, they describe a kind of templates or pattern of what happens whenever a people follow the call of God. Or to put it differently, that's how Reality works. Such people, at one point or another, will find themselves in some kind of desert. And they will hunger and thirst in that desolate place. But, what does that mean, and how can that be? We will begin exploring this idea that the Exodus account presents us in this episode of What do you mean, “God speaks”?Update on the book: The publication is proceeding even quicker than anticipated, as I'm now reviewing the finalized edit until the end of October. Bible StudyDon't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon: Sermon Notes:I. The Harvest and the Hesitant WorkerJesus sees a plentiful harvest (Matthew 9:37–38) — hearts ready to be gathered into God's kingdom.Every Christian is placed in a “harvest field”: family, work, school, neighborhood.Like Moses, many of us feel hesitant or unqualified to join God's mission.Exodus 4 shows how God responds to our hesitation with grace and provision.II. Four Pieces of Good News for Hesitant Workers1. God Calls the Unqualified (Exodus 4:1)Moses feels disqualified: he has a past, he's failed, and he isn't eloquent.God doesn't deny Moses' weaknesses—He calls him anyway.Key truth: God always uses calls unqualified people.Feeling unqualified often means we understand the weight of God's work and our dependence on Him.2. God Gives Signs (Exodus 4:2–9)Moses worries: “They won't believe me.”God gives three signs: the staff, the leprous hand, and water turned to blood. The point: it's not about our power, but God's.God confirms His work through signs, wonders, and spiritual gifts (Hebrews 2:3–4).Today, the Holy Spirit still bears witness through prayer, healing, prophecy, and other supernatural signs. Our role is to step out in faith — results belong to God.3. God Gives His Words (Exodus 4:10–12)Moses says, “I'm not eloquent.”God replies, “Who made your mouth? … I will be with your mouth and teach you what to say.”God is Lord of both abilities and disabilities.Gospel work requires words, not just actions — the gospel is good news that must be spoken. When we go, God provides the words we need.Even weak or awkward speech can carry the power of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:3–5).4. God Sends Us in Community (Exodus 4:13–16)God provides Aaron to go with Moses.God's mission is shared work—He sends His people together.Jesus sent disciples two by two.The Church is one body with many gifts.Everyone has a part in the mission.Discussion Questions:Are all Christians called into "harvest work?"Does sin disqualify us from being gospel workers?Have you experienced God bearing witness to his own message through a sign, wonder, or some supernatural expression of his power? What happened? What was the result? If we're meant to rely on the Holy Spirit for the right words to speak to others, is it still important to study the Bible, prepare a testimony, or equip ourselves for ministry in other ways? What gifts or roles do you believe God has given to you to help the body in gospel work?Questions?Do you have a question about today's sermon? If God's calling you into something new and it feels uncomfortable, this episode will help you trust Him in the messy middle and step into the higher purpose He's preparing for you. Sister, has God ever stirred something new in your heart—something that excites you and scares you at the same time? You know He's calling you to grow, but this new season doesn't look like what you've always done. Maybe it's a new goal, a dream, or a shift in how you serve Him. You're stepping out of your comfort zone, and the middle feels messy—but that's exactly where God meets you. You're not alone. I'm walking through this too. For years, God used me to inspire women in Christian fitness—to invite Him into their workouts, health goals, and daily habits. But lately, He's been stretching me beyond the gym and calling me higher—to help women find whole-life success in Him: faith, purpose, calling, and confidence that flows from Jesus. Inside This Episode In this raw and real episode of Strong. Confident. His., I'm inviting you behind the scenes of a brand-new season God is walking me through. You'll hear: The story of how God pressed this shift on my heart—including the quiet moment of exhaustion that changed everything The scriptures He's been highlighting to give me courage, peace, and direction Four reflection questions to help you discern what God might be asking of you in your own new season If you've been sensing that God has more for you—more purpose, more peace, and more impact—this episode will help you trust Him in the messy middle and step boldly into your next chapter. Scriptures from This Episode Hebrews 11:6 — “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Psalm 42:1 — “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” Psalm 18:33 — “He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places.” Psalm 18:36 — “You enlarged my path under me; so my feet did not slip.” Deuteronomy 12:9 — “For as yet you have not come to the rest and the inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you.” Reflection Questions Where is God calling you to change or grow? What dream or passion has He placed in you that you've been hiding or doubting? Are you thirsting for Him above all else, like the deer in Psalm 42? Are you willing to step onto higher ground, trusting Him to steady your feet even when it feels uncertain? Encouragment Your next season may not look like your last—and that's okay. When God calls you higher, He also equips you. He expands your capacity, your anointing, and your impact. If you remember nothing else, remember this: thirst for Him like the deer longs for water, and trust Him to steady your feet on the new heights. If this episode blessed you, would you share it with a friend who needs this reminder?  Your share could be the encouragement she's been praying for. And if it spoke to your heart, please take a quick moment to leave a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify—it helps more sisters find hope, healing, and strength in Jesus. Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Get behind our through the Bible project. Read more here Project23. Our text today is Judges 6:11–12. Now the angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.” — Judges 6:11-12 Gideon is hiding. Not from some small threat, but from the Midianite army that's been stripping Israel bare for seven years. He's threshing wheat in a winepress — a pit designed for crushing grapes, not for separating grain. It's cramped, awkward, and inefficient… but it's safe and secure from their Midianties oppressors. And that's where God shows up. The angel of the LORD greets him, not with a rebuke, but with a declaration: “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.” God finds him in a hidden place and calls him to frontline ministry, even giving him a new name and identity — a mighty man of valor. Fear results in retreat. It convinces us to settle for survival instead of stepping into spiritual opportunities God is putting in front of us. For Gideon, it was a literal enemy outside the caves and outside the pits. For us, it might be the fear of failure, rejection, loss, or inadequacy. Hiding feels safe, but it's not always where God wants you to remain. He doesn't call his people to stay in the winepress. He calls them to step into the places where his strength will meet their insecurities and deficiencies. God might be calling you out right now — into a conversation you've been avoiding, a ministry you feel unqualified for, or a bold act of obedience that scares you. If you wait until you feel brave, you'll never move. But if you step out in faith, you might discover God has already equipped you for the fight. Which is exactly what happens in Gideon's story. ASK THIS: Where are you hiding right now — spiritually, emotionally, or relationally? What big opportunity might God be calling you into that fear is holding you back from? How could believing “The LORD is with you” change your next step? What would it take for you to leave your “winepress” and step into the open? DO THIS: Identify one opportunity you've been avoiding because of fear. Pray over it today, and then take one small but concrete step toward it — even if it's just telling someone you trust. PRAY THIS: Lord, thank You for calling me out of my hiding places. Help me see the opportunities You're putting before me and give me the courage to step into them, knowing You are with me. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Do It Again."

In this episode, we explore: * Why Samuel's mission to anoint David was an act of treason * The dramatic irony of Samuel falling into the same trap he's warned against - judging by appearances * The ancient symbolism of shepherds as kings throughout the Near East * How God's value system clashes with human expectations of leadership * The Hebrew understanding of "heart" as the seat of wisdom and discernment, not just emotion * Why the youngest son pattern appears throughout Scripture * How David's capacity for repentance becomes more important than his perfection This podcast explores the Narrative Lectionary, offering fresh insights into familiar Bible stories and their relevance for today's world. Whether you're a pastor preparing for Sunday, a student of Scripture, or someone seeking deeper understanding of these ancient texts, this conversation will challenge how you think about leadership, calling, and God's surprising choices.

God delights in mercy, but there are certain key attitudes that open that door of blessing and breakthrough. On this episode, Mike Shreve shares one of the most miraculous manifestations he ever witnessed in an open air prayer gathering in India and how the mercy of God was poured out even on those who intended to kill him for his beliefs. Welcome to "I Love to Tell the Story," a podcast exploring the Narrative Lectionary! In this episode for October 12th, 2025, hosts Rolf Jacobson, Kathryn Schifferducker, and Craig Koester dive into 1 Samuel 3 - the powerful story of God calling the young boy Samuel. Join us as we explore: * The crisis of leadership in ancient Israel at the end of the judges era * Why Samuel didn't initially recognize God's voice calling him * The challenging truth-telling ministry Samuel was called to, including confronting his mentor Eli * How God's persistent calling doesn't depend on our ability but on God's faithfulness * What it means to be a "trustworthy prophet" who speaks difficult truths * The ongoing vocation of listening that defines prophetic ministry * How all Christians are called through baptism to various forms of ministry and witness This episode tackles the uncomfortable reality that sometimes God calls us to speak truth to power, even when it's difficult or involves confronting corruption. The hosts remind us that everyone - not just pastors - has callings from God in multiple areas of life.

At a gas station encounter, a young man challenged Fr. Meyer with the words of Jesus: “Call no one on earth your father.” What does this really mean?   In this homily, we explore how Scripture must be understood in context, why St. Paul himself refers to being a spiritual father, and how there is a difference between simply having a title and truly living it.   We are all called “Christian” by baptism—but do we live as disciples of Jesus Christ? God isn't finished with us yet. We can still grow into the fathers, mothers, godparents, friends, and saints He calls us to be.
