Circles have played a huge role in fiddler and singer Morgan Toney's life thus far: from drum circles, to talking circles, to the Earth itself (a circle!). In our Basic Folk conversation, Morgan talks about his L'nu (also known as Mi'kmaq) heritage and growing up on what's now called Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where his ancestors have lived since time immemorial. He elaborates on the significance of the terms 'Mi'kmaq' and 'Nu,' explaining the shift in terminology among his people. As a teenager, he discovered his Indigenous heritage and cultural roots from his elders after he moved to Wagmatcook (a First Nations reserve) and learned about how the power of music could shape his life. He shares the story of first hearing Phil Collins at his uncle's house after school, which inspired him to take up the drums. He soon discovered First Nations drumming by directly learning the songs from elders in talking circles. Morgan also talks about his transition from a shy teenager to a confident musician deeply immersed in both Mi'kmaq and Celtic musical traditions, creating a unique fusion which Morgan calls "Mi'kmaltic."We also talk about Morgan's emotional connection to his community and the importance of music in rediscovering and celebrating his Indigenous heritage. He recounts how his exposure to traditional Mi'kmaq songs and ceremonies as a teenager was a transformative experience that reignited his cultural pride; in music and in our conversation Morgan pays homage to his family members, especially his elders, who played pivotal roles in nurturing his musical talents and helping him embrace his cultural identity. Finally, Morgan reflects on his musical collaborations, including his close partnership with producer Keith Mullins, and the creation of his new album, 'Heal the Divide.' He further explains the innovative process of blending Mi'kmaq and Celtic musical elements, the album's thematic focus on community and healing, and his aspirations to inspire the younger generation of his community. This was truly an inspiring conversation exploring the intersections of culture, history, and music with a very special musician!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? Championship winning crew chief Jonathan Toney joins Davey Segal (6:42) for an insightful and feel-good conversation that spans over two decades with one single team. Toney explains how working with Sheldon Creed in the NASCAR Xfinity Series really isn't too different so far than it was working with Cole Custer, the rash of runner-up finishes Creed has scored, team chemistry at Haas Factory Team in this new iteration of the organization and more. Toney also dives into all the change the team has seen over his time, from Haas CNC Racing to Stewart-Haas Racing and now HFT. He explains why he's stayed loyal to the company despite numerous offers to go elsewhere over the years, why the Xfinity Series is the right place for him to be as a crew chief right now from a work/life balance perspective, the conversations leading up to 2023 before he finally got his chance to be a crew chief for the first time and how rewarding it was to win a championship with Custer in his first year at the helm. Toney also reminisces on the 2011 title run with Tony Stewart, what it was like to be a part of that team, some memorable tales from Homestead-Miami Speedway on championship weekend and more, including the vibe at the team when Stewart came in at first and his Hickory, North Carolina roots. Davey also recaps the tripleheader weekend of action at Martinsville Speedway and addresses the debacle of an Xfinity race that saw Sammy Smith penalized, previews Darlington Raceway and Papa Segal pays homage to Raymond Parks in this week's wayback segment.

SILAS TONEY AUDIO ONLY/NO VIDEOSeasons: The Beautiful Transition by Silas ToneySilas Toney's book, Seasons: The Beautiful Transition, captures the essence of change and how it shapes our lives. Through poetic verses, Toney asks readers to reflect on what each season has to teach us. What wisdom does winter pass to spring? How does the fleeting glory of autumn prepare us for the winter ahead? Toney's vivid imagery and poignant reflections create a tapestry of inspiration, rooted in the understanding that every phase of life, no matter how painful or joyous, holds a purpose.Born in Sumter, South Carolina, Silas Toney is no stranger to the ebb and flow of life's experiences. The youngest of nine children, Toney was not initially drawn to books. As a child, he wondered about the magic of writing—how authors could craft so many words and what gave them their weight. Many years later, Toney not only found his voice but also began pondering the "weight" of words in a deeply personal way. Through the metaphor of the seasons, Toney offers readers a unique journey, guiding them to discover the beauty and wisdom in life's transitions. Whether it's the harsh yet reflective winter or the hopeful dawn of spring, each season plays its part in the grand narrative of life, encouraging us to embrace change with grace and purpose.https://www.amazon.com/Seasons-Beautiful-Transition/dp/1645521648/ref=monarch_sidesheethttps://www.ecpublishingllc.com/https://silastoneybooks.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/32725stec.mp3

The first week of the Miami Hurricanes' Spring Practice is in the books, and Cam and The Beast break it all down. First, we start with two HUGE recruiting wins the Canes got this week. Jaelan Waters, a DB out of Seffner Armwood, and Ben Congdon, a massive OL out of Ohio, verbally committed this week. The 2026 class is strong so far. Then it's on to the first week of Spring Practice. We told you before Spring, and we are telling you now, we have heard nothing but strong things about freshman WR Malachi Toney, aka Baby Jesus. Toney was ahead of Ray Ray Joseph in the starting group on Friday. Will Ray Ray have what it takes to fend off Toney and return to the starting group? We shall see. The offense is looking good, even with out CB out there slinging it. The defense is a bit of a work in progress as new DC Corey Hetherman gets to know the players and his staff. But, there is a positive vibe as guys are reportedly enjoying the simpler system and the ability to play multiple positions. The hiring of Jai Lucas as the Canes' head basketball coach is done, and he will be introduced this week. We'll have more on Lucas and his staff coming up next week. Finally, The Beast was off-put by something the Canes Football social media team did involving Jon Gruden ( for a reminder on why Jon Gruden is no longer coaching...read here https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/08/sports/football/nfl-demaurice-smith-jon-gruden-racist-comment.html ) As always, go read Cam's great work at The State of The U

As Texas A&M students in the mid 2000's, Cory Cotton, Tyler Toney and their housemates spent countless hours playing hockey in the living room and attempting trick shots in the backyard. A spontaneous bet over a sandwich led the guys to make a video montage of outrageous basketball shots, which they titled Dude Perfect and posted on a new site called YouTube. After that first video wound up on Good Morning America, the five Dudes challenged themselves to even more outrageous stunts: an impossible shot from the third tier of a stadium, a here-goes-nothing lob from the door of a flying plane. But despite their growing popularity, the group spent five grueling years trying to build ad revenue and brand deals while juggling day jobs and commuting weekly across Texas. In 2014, they finally committed fulltime to building Dude Perfect into a robust entertainment platform, which today includes books, TV, live events, and a YouTube channel that has more subscribers than the NBA, NFL, and NHL combined. This episode was produced by J.C.
