Patrick Condon joins us this week for our discussion on sustainable urban planning. Mr. Condon received his master's in landscape architecture from Umass Amherst and has over 25 years of experience in sustainable urban design. Patrick started his academic career in 1985 at the University of Minnesota before moving to the University of British Columbia in 1992. After acting as the director of the landscape architecture program, he became the James Taylor Chair in Landscape and Liveable Environments. As Chair, he worked to advance sustainable urban design in numerous neighborhoods in the US, Canada, and Australia. Mr. Condon's newest book, Sick City: Disease, Race, Inequality, and Urban Land, features throughout our discussion and is available online. Together we discussed different housing policies across the world, Georgist land taxes, and how cities and towns can become more sustainable.

Patrick Condon, Vancouver-based urban design professor, published Sick City in the last year, which invited a good deal of controversy; though the book was all about overcrowding, inequality, and georgist theories of land rents, it was most rapturously praised by Livable California and various homeowner NIMBYs. Why? And can we agree with all the book's conclusions?

This is the second part of Mark and Ben's interview with Go Nimbly cofounder, Jason Reichl, so if you haven't listened to the first part, go back to Episode 58 and get caught up! Jason says that there are two key questions you should ask yourself when it comes to setting goals: How do I enact change that sticks? How do I communicate about that change implementation? And why? He says that if you do not communicate goals and the changes that will be a part of reaching those goals in a way that is recognizable to your team, your aims will not be effective. People need to understand specifically what you are proposing in order to jump on board. Part of this process is making your organization's mission very visible and apparent and then having your team cast visions for themselves in a way that aligns with your mission framework. Once you are all on the same page regarding organizational mission and goals, Jason recommends encouraging your team to pursue innovation and have the freedom to collaborate and brainstorm in unconventional ways like Patrick Condon taught him. This incubator model is a great one for avoiding the silo syndrome of departments being afraid of change and becoming territorial. Jason talks about tracking momentum KPIs instead of some of the more traditional KPIs that put too much emphasis on the wrong targets and metrics which could contribute to silos circling their wagons. Another practice that Jason has implemented at Go Nimbly is culture squads, groups that come together and meet on certain issues in order to create best practices. Systems and processes like this are one of Jason's passions in the organization because they set up the guardrails for projects and allow the team space to be proactive and innovative. On January 24th, The Globe & Mail published a story highlighting a study done by Evan Mast of the Upjohn Institute. This study found that the addition of market-rate housing in low-income neighborhoods caused rent to go down in those neighborhoods. Local data analyst Jens Von Bergmann did a simplified version of this study and found that the results hold true in Vancouver. Set out as a grid, it allowed riders to easily get from point A to point B – a grid that has helped shape the creation of many of the city’s favourite neighbourhoods.   Streetcars put people on the streets and along the way injected life into Kerrisdale, Dunbar, Kits, Cambie, Main, Granville, Kingsway and Hastings Streets. From 1890 to 1958, BC Electric built and operated interurban trains and streetcar lines throughout Metro Vancouver and into the Fraser Valley.   By the 1940s, the Lower Mainland followed the rails-to-rubber trend that was sweeping throughout North America. Buses – some were electric, most were diesel powered – replaced the streetcar.   Four decades later, SkyTrain was introduced and it has helped move people over long distances and quickly. However, for some urban planners, SkyTrain is not seen as a community builder. Rather, they see it as an expensive people mover.   Patrick Condon says LRT compliments a larger transit network, it saves taxpayers money and it puts people on the street, and has the potential to shape the communities it serves – all of which begs the question: why has it taken so long for us to get back to a good idea?   We invited one of LRT’s strongest local advocates,  urban designer, planner and professor Patrick Condon to join us for a Conversation That Matters about why it’s time to turn our attention away from SkyTrain and back to LRT.   Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Dialogue presents Conversations That Matter.
