They explore why bond markets are sounding alarms, why governments are struggling to respond, and what this all means for Australia. The episode draws urgent lessons from these fiscal failures, with stark warnings for what lies ahead if policy inertia continues. Among other issues, they discuss Gary Stevenson's proposal for a wealth tax in the UK. Gene would love to hear your thoughts on this episode. It's a Paul Revere moment, “RFK Junior is coming!” Ben is joined by author and journalist Emily Bass and UCSF Professor Eric Goosby, co-host of the Global Health Diplomats podcast to diagnose and propose solutions to the Trump Administration's assault on US public health. From the hollowing out of the CDC, to vaccine skepticism at the heart of the federal leadership, and savage, unconstitutional cuts to public health home and abroad, they delve into the broader ramifications of these attacks on scientific integrity, US democracy and security. They round upon what could be profoundly damaging political consequences, particularly for Republicans, if the health of their voters' children and elderly relatives is put directly at risk by this willful dismantling of US public health services. And in conclusion, Ben, Eric and Emily explore how to support the emerging regional health coalitions of states, cities and professional bodies to fill the gap. 00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome 00:50 Recent Developments in Global Health 02:08 Legal Challenges and Public Health Implications 03:18 Impact on Democracy and Public Health 12:04 Interview with Eric Goosby 14:27 Concerns About CDC and Public Health Surveillance 19:36 Future of Public Health and Science 34:46 Potential Solutions and Local Efforts 39:09 Coalitions and Surveillance Systems 44:23 Challenges in Public Health Funding 48:24 The Role of Philanthropy in Public Health 50:37 Political Ramifications and Public Health 56:22 Vaccine Misinformation and Public Trust 58:27 Accountability in Public Health Leadership 01:04:33 COVID Variants and Vaccination Strategies 01:10:27 Final Thoughts and Reflections Emily's Substack: https://substack.com/@emilysbass Ben's Substack: https://substack.com/@benplumley1 Join the Conversation! In today's episode, Jen and I solve the problem with schools, and spoiler alert! It's not the schools! It's the people who attend them. More specifically, the economic status of the neighborhoods and the people who have to live in them. It's just a plain fact that students from lower-income and impoverished communities have worse educational outcomes than their more economically stable counterparts. If you want schools to improve, stop blaming the schools and start working to improve the lives of the people who attend them! Here's how we break this all down in this episode:Literacy Rates and Historical Comparisons:We explored the misconception that literacy rates were higher in the past, noting that past statistics were often self-reported and not as rigorous as today's assessments.Current literacy rates show that 79% of adults have basic literacy, but half read below a sixth-grade level.Impact of Poverty on Education:We discussed how poverty significantly impacts literacy and overall educational outcomes.Comparing states like New Hampshire and New Mexico, we highlighted how environmental factors, funding, and socio-economic conditions contribute to educational disparities.School Funding Disparities:The episode delved into how school funding is largely dependent on local property taxes, leading to significant inequities between wealthy and impoverished districts.Examples from New York and Idaho illustrated the vast differences in per-pupil spending.Systemic Issues and Policy Failures:We examined how systemic and legal frameworks in different states either support or hinder educational success. The lack of robust policies in states like New Mexico contrasts sharply with the strong legal obligations in New Hampshire to provide equitable education. The Cost of Illiteracy:Illiteracy costs the U.S. economy up to $2.2 trillion annually in lost productivity and increased public assistance needs.Improving literacy rates could significantly boost the GDP and reduce public costs.Potential Solutions and Innovations:We discussed the potential of AI in education, suggesting that AI could handle basic learning while teachers focus on social skills and higher-order thinking. However, we acknowledged the importance of human connection and the role of teachers as mentors and role models.Challenges with Technology and Social Media:The pervasive use of smartphones and social media among students poses significant challenges to their focus and learning. We noted the resistance from parents when schools attempt to limit phone usage, highlighting another external factor beyond teachers' control. In conclusion, this episode emphasized that while schools and teachers play a crucial role in education, many factors affecting student success lie outside the classroom. Addressing issues like poverty, funding inequities, and systemic barriers is essential for meaningful improvement in education. We called for a broader focus on these external factors to create a more equitable and effective educational system.

Trump Puts Home Construction in CrisisJoin us for a compelling conversation about the impact of the Musk/Trump administration's immigration, tariff, and federal workforce policies on the construction industry, especially housing..In a discussion with Brian Turmail, Vice President of Public Affairs at the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), the Lean to the Left podcast explores those issues, which he says have put home construction in crisis.. Turmail highlights a severe labor shortage exacerbated by restrictions on programs like the H2B visa and cancellations under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and DACA. This labor scarcity could lead to higher costs, longer construction times, and stalled community development projects. The discussion touches on the broader economic consequences, such as increased housing prices, reduced funding for public education due to stagnant real estate growth, and the potential economic harm from tariffs on construction materials. The AGC advocates for more investment in career technical education and a streamlined, lawful immigration pathway to address these workforce needs. The session concludes with a call to action for listeners to support these initiatives via the website WorkforceDoneRight.org.CHAPTERS:00:00 Trump's Immigration Policies and the Construction Industry00:58 Introduction to the Labor Shortage Crisis01:35 Historical Context and Education Policies02:56 Visa Programs and Their Limitations06:50 Impact of Workforce Shortages on Communities08:17 Potential Solutions and Policy Recommendations20:37 Economic Consequences of Tariffs26:49 Call to Action and ConclusionAbout Bob GattyBob Gatty is a former journalist and communications consultant, the founder and editor of the Lean to the Left blog and host of its podcast.Lean to the Left pulls no punches in calling out Trump, Musk & Co., who are turning our country into their own personal piggybank. Please check out Bob's new book, Hijacked Nation: Donald Trump's Attack on America's Greatness, now available on Amazon.com. Today we are diving into the economics of the Olympics. It's a timely episode with the Paris Games ongoing right now and the economic reality for host cities is extremely poor. It's estimated that Paris is going to spend $9 billion for these 2024 games and in return, they'll generate revenue somewhere in the mid-single-digit billions. Our guest is Andrew Zimbalist, author and economics Professor at Smith College. Andrew brings us behind the curtain to share more about the IOC, the bidding process for the Olympics, how that has changed over time, and what has led us to this period of time where cities are spending so much for so little in return. It's a really fascinating discussion and leaves you thinking about the long-term viability of the games. Please enjoy this breakdown of the Olympics. The Ross Island Lagoon, which sits in the center of the four-island complex known as Ross Island, is a byproduct of decades of mining. In addition to industrial purposes, the lagoon also has a long history of being used recreationally and provides habitat for a variety of vulnerable plant and animal species. In 2015, researchers began to see cyanobacterial blooms in the lagoon. Cyanobacteria is a type of bacteria which can pose a serious threat to the health of animals and people who come into close contact with the water. When present, it gives the water a bright green appearance.Because the lagoon is a warm, stagnant pool, it’s an ideal breeding ground for cyanobacteria. And it’s only getting warmer due to climate change. The tide from the Willamette pulls the cyanobacteria out into the river’s main flow, contaminating the rest of the water. The Oregon Health Authority routinely releases warnings urging against recreational river use during warmer seasons because of this.Since 2017, Oregon State University and the Willamette River group the Human Access Project have been working on reducing these Lagoon blooms. There is work being done by different groups to address the cyanobacterial blooms in the Ross Island Lagoon. Desirée Tullos, professor of Water Resources Engineering at Oregon State University, joins us to share more.
