Stuart runs his own production company, Turtle Canyon Comedy, and writes and directs sketch shows, sitcoms, live shows and specials that have been shown on Netflix, Prime, BBC, Sky, ITV, Channel 4 and more. Stuart's most recent directing project is James Acaster's ‘Hecklers Welcome', Acaster's first HBO Special. His latest special, ‘Stuart Laws, Is That Guy Still Going?' Is now available on YouTube under 800 pound gorilla (links below). Comedy shows – Stuart Laws has to be Joking?: Everyone's dealt with it: first, a bad breakup; then, become a puffin island caretaker; suddenly, you're implicated in a puffin murder. A classic. You know how it goes. A vibe shift for acclaimed comedian Stuart Laws. ****½ (Chortle.co.uk). Stand-up comedy/theatre hybrid. Praise for his previous theatrical work: 'I left this show with the chills and feeling just a bit shaken' (MumbleTheatre.uk). 'It is really smart stuff, elegantly exposing hypocrisy' (Stage). 'Fantastically funny' (EdFestMag.com). 'One of the most skilled and likeable comics... a deliciously joke-dense show' (Scotsman). We chat about Michael Caine's iconic delivery of the line ‘Never' and making a show about it, directing and producing, his new Edinburgh shows, authenticity and real self, almost quitting comedy, flow state, being good at comedy, saying no, posting quality plus plenty more! This week's guest is the incredibly funny comedian Paul Foot, who took time out of his schedule to come and chat about such things as his love for Angela Lansbury and Premier Inn, his disdain for obvious tropes in modern whodunnits and why the Heinz's monopoly of the baked beans market could well be flannel. Paul explains why the idea of an earth-orbiting Judy Murray brings him comfort and how he summons the ghost of Keith Chegwin whenever he misplaces important items. Paul also comes up with the best ever answer to what TV show might be top of the ratings in the year 2050, so good in fact, that I think it might just get commissioned. Please Follow us on Social Media (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn. Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialPaul's socialsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/paulfootcomedyTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@paulfootcomedyTwitter: https://twitter.com/paulfootFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/paulfootcomedyYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@mrpaulfootGet Tickets for Paul's tour 'Dissolve' here: https://www.plosive.co.uk/events/paul-foot-dissolve-tour-2023-2024Produced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. Colin Wallace is a British former member of Army Intelligence in Northern Ireland and a psychological warfare specialist. He refused to become involved in the Intelligence-led 'Clockwork Orange' project, which was an attempt to smear various individuals including a number of senior British politicians in the early 1970s. He also attempted to draw public attention to the Kincora Boys' Home sexual abuse scandal several years before the Royal Ulster Constabulary finally intervened. He was wrongly convicted of manslaughter in 1981, for which he spent six years in prison, until 1987.[2] The conviction was later quashed in the light of new forensic and other evidence that raised serious questions about the dubious nature of the evidence used to convict Wallace initially. The Court of Appeal heard that scientific evidence used to convict Wallace was false and that the Home Office pathologist involved in the case admitted that he had received it from an anonymous American security source. The journalist Paul Foot, in his book Who Framed Colin Wallace?,[3] suggested that Wallace may have been framed for the killing, possibly to discredit the allegations he was making. This view was similarly expressed by Alex Carlile QC (now Lord Carlile),[4] who later speculated that this may have been the motive not just for the alleged frameup, but also for murder.[5

The city's longstanding and self-proclaimed satirical scandal sheet has a reputation for not holding back on attacking local politicians, along with the great and the good for alleged wrongdoing. But what is the story behind the anonymously produced publication? Once nominated for a Paul Foot award, is their approach of journalism mixed with what many see as relentless trolling relevant in a changing media environment?Neil Maggs and a long-standing contributor to The Bristolian hash it out. In today's episode, the lads talk to comedian Paul Foot.
As this year's Paul Foot Awards are announced for campaigning and investigative journalism, Anne McElvoy reports from the ceremony and talks to this year's winner. Anne also talks to the Director of the London School of Economics, the sociologist Dr Craig Calhoun about the things that inspired him to take up a career in the social sciences. The artist Alinah Azadeh talks about her latest project, two banners celebrating the 1965 Race Relations Act and the 1897 founding of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies now hanging in the Palace of Westminster with New Generation Thinker Naomi Paxton.
The Director General of the BBC, Tony Hall, has defended the use of the licence fee and dismissed calls, by some critics, for it to be shared with other broadcasters. Speaking to industry leaders at the Oxford Media Convention, he said the corporation faces tough choices in coming years as it faces competition from the likes of Google and Apple, and added that the status quo is not an option. He said efficiency savings are essential, but ruled out options like salami-slicing. So, what are the alternatives? How can the BBC modernise itself and save money? Steve Hewlett discusses ideas with Lis Howell, Director of TV and Broadcasting at City University, David Elstein, former Chief Executive of Channel 5 and now Chairman of Open Democracy and the Broadcasting Policy Group, and he talks to Patrick Barwise whose latest report for the Reuters Institute concludes that commercial broadcasters, and viewers, would be worse off if BBC TV did not exist. The Paul Foot award for investigative and campaigning journalism has been won by David Cohen of the London Evening Standard for his work on gangs, which formed part of the newspaper's Frontline London campaign. David joins Steve in the studio to discuss his work, and the present state of investigative journalism. And as the application deadline to be Chairman of the new press regulation body IPSO closes, we ask Lord Hunt, the current Chair of the Press Complaints Commission, whether he's thrown his hat into the ring.Producer: Katy Takatsuki Editor: Andrew Smith.
As Dirty Rotten Scoundrels becomes a musical, Samira Ahmed considers the scoundrel with historian of literature Nandini Das and novelist Nick Harkaway. Danny Dorling talks about the UK housing crisis. Plus we report on the winner of this year's Paul Foot Award for campaigning or investigative journalism.
As the winner of the Paul Foot award for investigative and campaigning journalism is announced, Matthew Sweet re-assesses the significance of this award with Ian Hislop and the winner Andrew Norfolk, in a year the judges have described as "exceptionally strong". Matthew talks to political philosopher John Gray about his latest book and asks should we turn towards contemplation of the natural world and the non-human? And James Lasdun discusses his memoir on literary stalking with psychoanalyst Lisa Appignanesi and New Generation Thinker Martin Goodman.
Kirsty Young's guest on Desert Island Discs this week is Richard Ingrams. Former editor and a founder of the satirical magazine Private Eye, he's one of the godfathers of contemporary British satire. Pseud's Corner, Dear Bill, and Colemanballs all originated with him at the helm. Now editor of The Oldie, he's still taking part in regular ideas meetings at Private Eye and says he wouldn't know what to do if he stopped working. From a privileged and well-connected background he seemed an unlikely outsider, yet he's spent a lifetime pulling the rug from under the feet of the great and the good. It's often proved a risky route, bringing him into conflict with army recruiting sergeants, cabinet ministers and billionaire industrialists alike. One of four boys, his favourite childhood memories are of accompanying his mother on the piano while she played the violin. He met Willie Rushton at school when they worked on the school magazine and at Oxford he met Paul Foot and other Private Eye regulars contributing to more magazines - Parson's Pleasure and Mesopotamia.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: The Gloria from Mass in B Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach Book: Teach yourself piano tuning Luxury: Grand piano.
