VYS0012 - Show Notes When Hine and Buckley had the idea to start a podcast about weird stuff in order to re-evaluate their reality this was the exact thing they had in mind. Mark Vincent is a man of many disciplines and much discipline - chaos magician, hypnotist, drummer, Lavey Satanist and purveyor of mind-blowing ideas. What was intended to be a discussion about chaos magic quickly spins off-track and takes a fascinating detour through the hard problem of consciousness, assembly theory, overcoming chronic pain and the pervasive nature of trance in occult practice. Paul says that the science of aches, pains, and injuries is surprisingly weird, controversial, and interesting, and his job is to translate it for both patients and pros. In his writing, he works to make it friendlier than the institutional health care sites, but more scholarly and detailed than most health blogs. My own experience on painscience.com was shocking....I was shocked at how gullible I have been over these many years. It was humbling to find several “areas of no doubt” ….of ”universal truths”, I thought ….that are actually based on repeated anecdote and faith in authority instead of scientific fact. I always thought that I was skeptical but it turned out I was a sucker for a well-articulated, logical explanation. Listen in to discover your own pain solutions that will really work for you. Chris and Jonathan welcome back to the show Paul Ingraham, the founder of PainScience.com. He charts his early days as a woo believer, his transformation into a skeptic, and the thing that got him in trouble with his massage therapy regulatory body: tone. Do healthcare regulators care for snark? Is it their role to tone-police their members? The Internet took many regulators by surprise and some overreacted. How do you kick the foxes out of the henhouse of massage therapy if the rule is that foxes should be treated as hens?   No time stamps for this one. It's a story that goes from “crack” addiction to growing out of the adolescent phase of skepticism to the difference between evidence-based medicine and science-based medicine. Nobody likes getting hurt. Well, besides masochists, of course. But seriously, getting injured sucks. Pain is annoying at best or excruciating at worst, but that’s not necessarily even the worst part. If you try to work through the pain, you’ll usually end up even worse off. So, injuries not only prevent you from working out comfortably, but they often keep us out of the gym altogether. In turn, this slows down your progress or even brings your fitness goals to a complete halt. Most people fear serious, acute injuries from lifting weights. The truth is weightlifting isn’t nearly as dangerous as many people think, and one of the most common issues us gym-goers face is repetitive stress injuries (RSIs). That’s why I called in a true RSI expert, Paul Ingraham, the founder of PainScience.com who spends all day writing about pain and injuries. In this episode, we chat about ... The underlying mechanisms behind overuse injuries How you can prevent RSIs and treat chronic pain Why you might not want to take anti-inflammatory drugs The best ways to fix an RSI and whether topical medicines can help The important of “load management” When it’s time to see a doctor And more ... So if you want to learn about how to avoid RSIs and how to make them go away when they do occur so you can keep training and live pain-free, hit that play button! 7:36 - What is repetitive stress syndrome? 19:22 - What can you do to help with chronic pain? 24:24 - What is your protocol for resolving repetitive strain injury? 34:29 - Under what circumstances would this be a good idea to try topical medicine? 42:01 - What do you mean by “managing load”? 59:00 - What should you do if your body hasn’t recovered after 6 weeks? 1:03:43 - How can you prevent repetitive strain injury? 1:08:02 - How do we find the spots where our muscles are irritated? 1:12:14 - Can deloading help prevent repetitive stress injury? 1:16:14 - Where can people find you and your work? --- Mentioned on The Show: Paul Ingraham's website and mentioned articles: https://www.painscience.com/about https://www.painscience.com/RSIs https://www.painscience.com/ArtOfRest https://www.painscience.com/structuralism https://www.painscience.com/pain_is_weird Paul Ingraham's Books: https://www.painscience.com/books.php Paul Ingraham's Twitter: https://twitter.com/painsci Shop Legion Supplements Here: https://legionathletics.com/shop/ --- Want to get my best advice on how to gain muscle and strength and lose fat faster? Paul Ingraham is a Vancouver science journalist and creator of PainScience.com, a website about the science of pain, injury, treatment, and rehab with about a million monthly readers. In this episode he discussed the reasons people ritualistically stretch (beliefs about flexibility, injury reduction, improving performance etc) and the whether the scientific literature backs them up. He also made reference to certain structures which are biomechanically awkward/impossible to stretch, some of the sensory adaptations/neurology that may be involved, and whether stretching is indeed as beneficial as it society believes it to be.

Shin Splints. ITB Syndrome. Patellofemoral Syndrome. The dreaded Plantar Fasciitis…  With even the slightest of niggles, we often keep ourselves up at night assuming we are developing any, or maybe even ALL of these injuries. But what are they exactly? And, as importantly, what aren’t they? How are they really caused and how does our perception of pain influence our recovery and rehab?

There’s no way to prove what is ‘proper stretching technique’. So why is stretching advice handed out to everyone that kicks a ball or steps into a gym?  Jenn Schwartz of Impact Your Fitness has been asking this question for years.  This episode and references below speak for itself.  Jenn talks through how her experience with anatomy and 1000’s of hours helping people with muscle flexibility concerns shaped her philosophy on stretching.     Shownotes 1:33 The word stretch is misused! 3:15 Sensation of stretching vs. reality 4:16 6 myths about stretching, “Stretching debunked” by Paul Ing 7:30 Research and stretching- how much exists? 10:35  Definition of stretching 13:00 What’s the difference between a hamstring stretch and a deadlift? 14:30 Underperforming muscles contribute to the ‘need’ to stretch 17: 56 One of my replacements for general stretching advice   Links “Quite a Stretch” by Paul Ingraham.  This link contains several references that “We are Stretching for all the wrong reasons” by Sarah Berry   Follow Jenn on Instagram

Jared Updike shares his story about his experience with pain in this episode. He received diagnoses of psychogenic pain, central sensitization, myofascial pain syndrome, and fibromyalgia. Jared wrote a terrific blog post ("Doctor Masseuse"), which I discovered via Paul Ingraham's post on PainScience.com.  Jared Updike is Los Angeles-based software developer who learned about chronic pain and fatigue at the school of hard knocks. He hopes other sufferers can become their own health advocates, learning to manage their issues through patient education and their own informed, considered experimentation. He dishes out life advice and writes about technology, photography and his programming projects at his blog, Jareditorial, at jared.updike.org. You can follow him on Twitter @JaredUpdike. Jared shares his experiences -- including successes and struggles -- and we discuss some of the interesting science about pain. Jared shares his thoughts for health care providers and for patients struggling with pain. I also found out that Jared has been to 56 of the 59 National Parks! We discuss many resources about the science of pain. Not just a fascinating case study of applying skepticism to a unsolved medical mystery, this talk also has plenty of practical "owner's manual" information about the biology of a nearly universal kind of pain.
