A 70-year-old client fills in an online intake form, saying she has myasthenia gravis, hypertension, and hypothyroidism. She only takes Synthroid, and says her hypothyroidism and hypertension are well controlled. She has low back pain and muscle soreness. At first glance, this seems fairly simple. MG does not appear to be a major factor for her, because she is not controlling it with medication. But a closer look reveals some possible tangles between MG, hypothyroidism, and some cautions about hypertension drugs. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching. I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. Fascia has been a hot topic in both research and hands-on therapy for some time now. While the idea that massage therapists affect more than just muscle isn't new, defining exactly what "the other stuff" is has proven trickier than expected. Today, multiple definitions of fascia are debated worldwide. To bring clarity and foster better communication, a new, unified definition has been proposed in the Journal of Anatomy (January 2025). Join hosts Rachelle Clauson and Nicole Trombley, co-directors of AnatomySCAPES, as they dive into this fascinating, global discussion, sharing insights from their recent participation at the Winter School Research Conference in Padua, Italy, on this episode of The ABMP Podcast. They co-author the “Anatomy for Touch” column in Massage & Bodywork magazine and enjoy helping therapists better understand how anatomy relates to what they are feeling through their sense of touch.   Nicole Trombley: As a massage educator, Nicole draws on her passion for human biology to help therapists better understand the tissues under their hands. She owns and operates Equilibrio Massage in San Diego, CA, where she has specialized in massage for pregnancy and postpartum for the past 20 years.   Rachelle Clauson: Rachelle loves teaching therapists about the structural organization and beauty of the human fascial system. She served as the Director of Creative and Administrative Affairs for the Fascial Net Plastination Project, and owns Flourish Bodywork, her private practice where she has offered hands-on bodywork in San Diego, CA, for the past 21 years.   Sponsors:   Anatomy Trains: www.anatomytrains.com     American Massage Conference: https://www.massagetherapymedia.com/conferences   Anatomy Trains is a global leader in online anatomy education and also provides in-classroom certification programs for structural integration in the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan, and China, as well as fresh-tissue cadaver dissection labs and weekend courses. This week we're checking out a brand new podcast that was three years in the making. Dylan Mulvaney is a trans woman who is so hated she destroyed one of the best known brands in the US. Most people would not be able to pull that off and if they did, they certainly wouldn't get a podcast out of it.  Anthony Cumia and Adam Busch both join us to discuss Dylan's iconic conversations behind closed doors. Scorch finally reveals his motorhome and we analyze the terrible logo they developed for Dive Bar Locator. Tom Myers' monologue does not disappoint. Opie is completely out of control. He's mad at Erik Nagel for a thing Erock never said, he's taking shots at Anthony Cumia that are vague and unfounded, and he's implying that Sam Roberts used to cheat on his wife. What an a-hole! And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. In this conversation, Joanne Avison interviews Shane McDermott, an advanced practitioner, photographer, therapist, and explorer, often referred to as a “contemporary renaissance man”. They introduce the essential difference it makes to understand the human body beyond anatomy - and into archetypes - over time. To begin, they reminisce about meeting 25 years ago while teaching for Tom Myers and reflect on their time training with Caroline Myss, when she first taught Sacred Contracts (Archetypes) in person. Joanne and Shane delve into the transformative impact of understanding archetypes on body work therapy, emphasizing the way we understand time and how it is linked so closely to our life force. When we think we are time bound - we can operate at a level that keeps us on the “hamster wheel”. When we know how our archetypes work, in time, we can access deeper states of being and healing. It is a wonderful introduction to the series on Space and Time that's coming up soon. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you—not ON you—to create change that works. What exactly happens when a rib goes out? While it's not exactly hitting the club scene in Vegas, what happens is not so different from if it did. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, host Allison Denney of Rebel Massage explains what is going on when a rib goes out, how to think about costovertebral joints, and the importance of the health history.    Host Bio:           Contact Allison Denney: rebelmt@abmp.com        Allison's website: www.rebelmassage.com                      Allison Denney is a certified massage therapist and certified YouTuber. I currently have a private practice based out of Long Beach, California, where I also teach continuing education classes and occasionally work on my kids. We've all heard Tom Myers' comedy but what if you interviewed him and took him seriously? What would that sound like? Dan Caper hosts a show about the craft of joke writing and even lets Tom punch up some jokes he's been working on. This is Tom's calling in my opinion. Adam Busch joins us to marvel at how fame hasn't changed Tom Myers. Virgie Tovar has recently been appointed the weight czar for San Francisco's health department and her take is, “why would anyone want to be healthy?” Howard Stern is back from his holiday vacation and surprise surprise, he's bitter. He also interviews Nikki Glaser after she hosted the Golden Globes and got about an hour of sleep. Stuttering John is already reducing his rate for his new job. He's very bad at it. Cardiff joins the show as we play a new game, tease the next episode, read a review with Annie, and listen to your voicemails. Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk teams up with skateboarder/MMA fighter/broadcaster/author/annoying personality Jason Ellis. They get a wide array of guests but on this episode they have the freestyle skateboarding GOAT Rodney Mullen and the most versatile and creative young skateboarder, Andy Anderson. So of course they talk about - Jason Ellis. Doug from Good Times Great Movies joins us to discuss Jason Ellis riding bareback on his horse. Caleb Hammer has another dummy on his show who thinks she's going to be rich. Tom Myers and Ray DeVito battle on MLC to decide who's a slightly less pathetic comic. Pat Dixon joins the show to discuss Stuttering John's final episode, an episode that Pat was a part of.
