This week's show is with Matthew C. Halteman. Matthew is professor of philosophy at Calvin University (MI, USA) and the Oxford Centre for Animals Ethics (UK). He is the author of Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan and co-editor of Philosophy Comes to Dinner: Arguments about the Ethics of Eating. Matthew's work is driven by deep commitments to human flourishing, animal freedom, food systems transformation, and communal cooperation to realise as much truth, beauty, and goodness as we collectively can. He loves Arsenal Football Club, the television show Twin Peaks, and vegan desserts (especially tiramisu!). In this rich and thought-provoking conversation, Lian and Matt explore the profound intersections between dietary choices, ethics, and the search for a more liberated way of living. Matt shares how his agricultural roots once framed his understanding of food, only for a childhood visit to a slaughterhouse to plant a seed of dissonance that would take decades to fully bloom. Through philosophy, emotional connection, and a series of serendipitous interventions, he found himself drawn to a new way of being - one that prioritises creaturely flourishing over rigid ideology. The conversation weaves through the personal and the mythical, touching on the tensions between authenticity and openness, the allure of fundamentalism, and the freedom found in conscious food choices. Lian also reflects on her own lifelong path as a vegan, seeing it through a fresh lens of self-inquiry and deeper meaning. This is not just a discussion about diet; it's an invitation to rethink our most ordinary, intimate rituals - what we eat, why we eat it, and how that shapes the world we create. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Food is more than sustenance—it is ritual, identity, and philosophy. Whether we realise it or not, our dietary choices are woven into our values, relationships, and personal mythologies. Flourishing matters more than dogma. Instead of rigid rules, Matt invites us to see going vegan not as an ‘ism' but as an aspiration—one that prioritises the joy and freedom of all living beings rather than simply avoiding harm. The mythical exists in the mundane. By examining something as fundamental as food, we open doors to greater self-awareness, transformation, and connection to the sacred in everyday life. Arsenal's transformation into a corner kick powerhouse under Mikel Arteta's leadership. The Arsenal Football Club, commonly known as simply Arsenal, is a professional football club based in Holloway, North London, England.
Dr Matthew C Halteman is a professor of philosophy at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a fellow at the Oxford Centre of Animal Ethics. Beside his academic work, Matthew is on the board of directors for The Better Food Foundation and Creature Kind, and he's the author of Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan.Matt urges us to stop looking for moral perfectionism and accept mistakes and dead ends are part of being human. He encourages listeners to look for light coming through the cracks, and he advocates shifting from scarcity mode to an abundance mindset to stay positive. His career and veganism comes from finding his way, rather than a particular plan, shaped by being an anxious young person at a time when there was less support and understanding. He thought he'd train for a career in law but instead turned to philosophy, which opened his mind and made better sense of the world. The story of Matt's first meeting with his then-girlfriend's scary father, a successful businessman, is poignant and personal. To Matthew's surprise and relief, his now father-in-law was a strong advocate of philosophy studies among young executives.A bulldog called Gus, and friend and fellow philosopher Nathan Nobis, of Morehouse College, Atlanta, and Matt's wife Susan, helped him change his omnivorous eating habits. And while veganism is his own ethical and philosophical choice, it's not something Matt would insist his children followed throughout adulthood (though he'd be pleased if they did). Finally, and curiously, Matthew is an avid follower of Arsenal Football Club – the English Premiership (soccer) team also known as The Gunners. He's also interested the vegan football team Forest Green Rovers, which is supported by planet and plant advocate, Dale Vince.LinksMatthew C. I used to be a bit of a stickler when it came to low and no alcohol beer—because it didn't really fit into my lifestyle at the time, I didn't see the point of it. These days, however, I've not only accepted that it's important to see more alcohol free beer on the bar, but believe its increasing availability is a net positive to beer culture as a whole. Not only does it give people who don't drink alcohol the chance to enjoy beer, but it allows people to curate their habits, whether that's to drink more mindfully, or cut down on the units in certain situations or at certain times of the year. Most importantly, I believe the increasing availability of good quality alcohol free beer opens up beer and pub culture to more people. And more people choosing to socialise and spend time in pubs is something that all of us should be celebrating. With a greater number of good quality draught low and now alcohol beer options coming to the market, this is a trend I expect to continue. One of the breakout low and no alcohol beer brands of the past few years is Milford, Connecticut's Athletic Brewing Company. Established in 2017 by Bill Shufelt and John Walker, in just seven short years it's grown to have multiple brewing sites, release well over 100 different beers—all low/no—and attain a market valuation of a staggering $800 million. They've even opened a taproom, which brings a beer experience most of us take for granted to a much wider range of people. While alcohol free beer is growing in the US beer market, it's not doing so quite as quickly as it is in the UK, where there seems to be less remaining stigma around alcohol free beer. As a result, Bill spends a fair amount of time in the UK as he helps to steward the growth of his brand over here. Most recently, Athletic has partnered with Arsenal Football Club as an official drinks partner, providing further mainstream exposure for a brand that shows no signs of slowing down.In this brand new episode of the Pellicle Podcast I caught up with Athletic Brewing Company's co-founder Bill Shufelt during SIBA's Beer X conference in Liverpool. We chatted about, among other things, the stratospheric growth of his brewery, their approach to producing their alcohol free products, and why the UK is a crucial market for low alcohol brands. If you're keen to understand the dynamic alcohol free beer market, then this episode is a must-listen.We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. “Everybody wants to see you – everybody thinks this is an opportunity for employment…. a lot of people come into government believing they are there to enrich themselves.”It's nearly three months since Joseph Boakai started work as Liberia's new president. But in an interview with the Africa Daily podcast he tells Alan Kasujja that he's still fielding enquiries from people wanting government jobs every working day from early in the morning. The 79-year-old, who was Vice President from 2006 to 2018 under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, narrowly defeated George Weah in November last year – after campaigning on an anti-corruption ticket. But he says while he's spoken constantly about the need to clean up politics, many people ‘still haven't grasped' the concept that politics is about service and not about financial security for themselves and their family. In a wide-ranging and frank interview, he also tells Alan Kasujja how poverty and badly paid jobs like rubber tapping helped prepare him for leadership, his plans for a war crimes court to work for justice and reconciliation after the country's two brutal civil wars, and how he wants to sort out Liberia's awful roads within his first 100 days in office. And he and Alan discover a shared love of Arsenal Football Club…

In our latest episode of Supporting Champions, we had the opportunity to engage in a fascinating conversation with James Collins, recognised as a leading Sport & Exercise Nutritionist. In elite sport he has worked with Team GB Olympic teams and athletes over three Olympic Games. He joined Arsenal Football Club in 2010, where he spent seven seasons as the club's first performance nutritionist. He has worked as a consultant with England Football, France Football (2018 World Cup winners), and is currently a consultant with Chelsea FC. James is Managing Director of INTRA Performance Group working with talent from elite sport and entertainment from their Harley Street clinic. He was previously elected President of The Royal Society of Medicine's Food and Health Forum and is author of the acclaimed book ‘The Energy Plan‘ (Penguin Random House). Throughout our discussion, James shares his journey into the world of sports nutrition, providing insights into his experiences and the lessons he's learned along the way. His unique perspective, shaped by years of working with both individual athletes and team sports, offered a deeper understanding of the diverse nutritional strategies required in different sporting contexts. James has in recent years begun to branch out and apply his nutritional advice to businesses and take on interesting individual cases including a musician taking to one of the main stages in Glastonbury last year, the parallels between athletes and musicians seemingly not too dissimilar. https://twitter.com/jamescollinspn?lang=en http://jamescollinsnutrition.com/ https://www.intraperformancegroup.com/ https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/439206/the-energy-plan-by-james-collins/9781785042294 Hi, I'm Steve Ingham Sports and Performance Scientist co-founder at Supporting Champions.
