We take to the open waters this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to director ZACH CARVER who joins us live talking about his latest doc, THE RACE TO ALASKA. And, we dive into the deep end with a bite of SHARK BAIT and our exclusive interview with one of my fave filmmakers, JAMES NUNN. Everyone knows of my love for sharks (after all, I am known as moviesharkd), especially in film, and thankfully a new shark film hits the cinematic waters just in time for summer – SHARK BAIT! The tale of five friends on spring break who head to the sandy beaches of Mexico for much-needed fun and partying. On their last night, partying gets a bit out of control which leads to stealing some jet skis in the morning and heading out into the ocean for a game of chicken. And you can just imagine how well that goes. Needless to say, spring break, stupidity, and sharks are a lethal combination. Take a listen to this exclusive interview with director JAMES NUNN as we dive into the making of SHARK BAIT talking everything from shooting off the coast of Malta to James' technical precision and acumen to the underwater filming (85% of the film was shot in open waters versus a tank) to sunburn to casting and more! Then we head into the dangerous waters off the northwestern North American coast with THE RACE TO ALASKA when documentarian ZACH CARVER joins us live. A 750-mile journey from Port Townsend, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska, the R2AK is one of the most interesting races you may ever witness – on a boat (any kind of boat – paddle boat, kayak, canoe, sail, pedals), no motors, no support. Taking a look at the last several years of the R2AK with in-race footage and interviews we meet the racers, learn about the various boats, and vicariously revel in the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and the fun of it all…and we see some of the most beautiful waterways and landscape on this earth. An interesting conversation with Zach as we talk about the race itself, how it landed on his own radar, the challenges of filming, working with individual racers who did much of their own "onboard filming" with self-interviews throughout the 750-miles, blending 4 years of races into one exciting tale, lensing challenges along the race route and capturing the beauty and harshness of Mother Nature, finding a through-line, and so much more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Meet the fabulous R2AK Race Boss Daniel Evans and explore this annual 750-mile cold water race from Port Townsend, Washington, to Ketchikan, Alaska.
The Race to Alaska! A 750-mile Cannonball Run from Port Townsend, WA, up the Inside Passage of the Canadian Coast to Ketchikan, AK has been called the “Iditarod on a Boat”, and the only rule is there are no engines allowed. COVID has pushed the start of the 2020 race back until 2021 but that does not mean you have to quit R2AK cold turkey: Race to Alaska – The Movie will be coming to the small screen soon. Tyler and Carter talk with the movie’s director, Zach Carver, about compiling thousands of hours of on-course video into a feature length documentary, and how you can contribute to their Kickstarter campaign. Cool stuff. Listen in!

This episode is part of a series of stories we collected at our live storytelling event last year at the Race to Alaska sendoff party in Port Townsend, Washington. John Muir, in his journal, wrote that one "should never go to Alaska as a young man (or woman)because you will never be satisfied with any other place as long as you live." In this story Larry Layman shares some observations from a kayaking trip in Glacier Bay that lend much truth to Muir's sentiments. For the next few episodes we’ll be sharing some of the incredible stories that we collected at our live storytelling event last year at the Race to Alaska sendoff party in Port Townsend, Washington. Race to Alaska has been cancelled for 2020 so we’re hoping these stories will keep the intrepid and eccentric spirit of R2AK alive while we eagerly await its return next year. All the stories from this event were centered around the theme of water; this story is about a wild and somewhat harrowing overnight kayaking adventure in Alaska. This is the final episode chronicling the 2019 Race to Alaska. In the same way you use the leftover turkey carcass after Thanksgiving to make soup, we’re making R2AK stew out of our favorite leftover bits from the 2019 experience. If you’ve listened to the previous 13 episodes, you have tasted all of the dishes: the eccentric personalities, interesting boats, harrowing challenges, inspirational speeches, questionable jokes, thoughtful participants, and shared suffering that make this race irresistible for a certain type of person. If you want to spectate the R2AK, Port Townsend or Victoria are likely the easiest places to do it for most. But Ketchikan - the finish line - is the best. Why? It’s where the story ends and where racers achieve their glory, get that first warm meal in weeks, lets out their anxiety and can finally get away from that annoying teammate that chews with their mouth open. You’d be forgiven for thinking that the R2AK is a race between a couple of fast boats shooting for the $10,000 prize, a few dirtbags who stole their dad’s boat Ferris Bueller-style, and a weirdo who wants to test drive his homemade submarine. You might not be far off, but there are also some amazing people who sign up in order to use the race as a platform to do good things. In this episode we highlight whose in it to support causes. All anyone talks about around here are their boats, so we’ll cave and talk about them too. The winning teams are in, second place has their steak knives, and the parties have started in Ketchikan for some of us. The Race to Alaska runs 750-miles, from Port Townsend, Washington to Ketchikan, AK and has only two rules: 1) No Engine 2) No Support Crew. The eight members of Team Shut Up And Drive will spend a week together on a sparse, 33-foot racing boat with a bucket for a toilet. I talk with Nathalie Criou and Satchel Douglas two members of the team.
The inside passage to Alaska has been paddled by native canoes since time immemorial. It’s in the spirit of tradition, exploration, and the lawless self-reliance of the gold rush that the Race to Alaska was born. You, a boat, a starting gun. $10,000 if you finish first, a set of steak knives if you’re second. Cathartic elation if you can simply complete the course. R2AK is a self-supported race with no supply drops and no safety net. Any boat without an engine can enter. Last year 37 teams were accepted and 21 finished. Graham Shaw was 1 of the 21 and he shares his story. Visit Ocean Sailing Podcast for offshore sailing opportunities and podcast extras and follow us on Facebook.
Gil Bahnsen shared his journey in preparing mentally, emotionally, and physically for the massive challenge of competing in the Race to Alaska (R2AK). He's building his own boat and plans to sail it from Port Townsend, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska – that's 750 miles of frigid ocean water. Gil discussed his inspirations, his struggles, and […]
We are Achaians coming from Troy, beaten off our true course by winds from every direction across the great gulf of the open sea, making for home, by the wrong way, on the wrong courses. So we have come. - Odysseus Team Ravenous has achieved the dubious record of most miles to Ketchikan. Some will say it is a 750 mile race, but not them. For them the road is much longer and finds it's way to the distant shore of Haida Gwaii with a blown out spinnaker and a boat taking on water as they eat the last of their food. That's when they decide to both sleep while underway in the great Dixon Entrance. I talk to them as to why. Enjoy
Race Boss was able to grab a quick chair with teams Oaracle and Trak Kayaks. Two of our human powered back of the pack teams. Turns out, they like it back there. And here’s why.
One team left. Team Ravenous, the 20-foot Hobie cat, is trying to get across Dixon Entrance—and they have been trying all night. They are the only team in the four years of racing to sail to Haida Gwaii. And they did it in a 20-foot cabinless beach cat. We can’t answer why they chose that route, because that is usually considered a very bad idea when you're trying to race to Alaska. It’s not even on the way. Keep your eye on the tracker. Team Kairos: An Angus RowCruiser with Joe aboard rolled into town yesterday at 1545 to take 20th place in this year's R2AK. It’s a second attempt for Joe, who had to withdraw down in Nanaimo due to gear failure in 2017. He said he had to come back. Oh… and let’s talk about Team Dock Rat a little. Enjoy.
It's a talk with Josh Collins of Team Torrent, a man trying to finish the Race to Alaska on a stand up paddle board. He doesn't finish the race, but it is not from lack of trying. It's a modern day epic tale, one paddle stroke at a time.

Episode 4. Racer Round up Part 1. Waiting for Fusion It’s a roundtable featuring 11 teams that span all four years of the race. They pull up a chair and search for answers to questions often unanswerable, or at least arguable. It’s a geek session, but it’s from the horse’s mouth. Teams include: North2Alaska - 2017, Ptarmigan - 2018, Ketchikan - 2016, Can’t Anchor Us - 2015/16, Sail like a Girl - 2018, Fashionably Late - 2018, Global 2016/17/18, Heart of Gold 2017/18, Superfriend 2015/16/18, Liteboat - 2016/17/18 and Swan Song 2018.

RACE TO ALASKA START Explains some of the challenges faced by competitors in this endurance test from Port Townsend, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska in which my son Russell is currently competing. Using his participation as a legitimate excuse, I tempt several of my seasoned traveler friends to join me at Victoria, BC to form a cheering section for Russell's send-off. At this writing he is still under way, but details of the race including videos can be found at www.R2K.com. I ask listeners to offer their thoughts on a proposed Outrig Design Contest for a vessel intended for single handing in this and other endurance Capers. Please respond to outrig.org@gmail.com
