For Life on Purpose Episode #99, my guest is author, writing, and leadership coach Dave Ursillo.    Dave played a major role in my podcasting journey as not only have we talked multiple times on this show, but 10 years ago, he was guest #1 on my first podcast Radio Enso. So I invited him back to talk about where we were then, where we are now, and our respective journeys through the years.   “The key to living a full and whole life comes down to how well you know your True Self — and how you express that inner truth in your little corner of our planet.”   About Dave Ursillo:   "I'm a writer, an 11-time author, and a writing coach and leadership coach. I'm on a mission to help creatives, business owners and professionals share their voices, stories, and messages in our world. I also love to travel, I'm an avid home cook and baker, and I treat my morning coffee like some do fine wines. Beyond my writing and publishing occasional books, I'm a fully self-employed creative professional and have been working for myself in a small business-of-one called Lead Without Followers, LLC., since 2009. Once upon a time, I quit my job in politics and left a young career path in public service behind so that I could follow my dream to share my words with others — and to share some good in the world. Today, I spend my days immersed in clarifying conversations as a writing and creativity coach, a leadership coach to small business owners and creative entrepreneurs, and occasionally as a communications strategist and story consultant. In between my client work, I write an every-other-weekly newsletter called Chronicles of the Self-Storied Life, which is read by a few thousand readers worldwide, and publish occasional free resources like writing and journaling prompts. I am always creating new and thoughtful educational content like e-courses, hosting occasional in-person workshops, and putting on digital experiences like webinars to help the creatively-curious, conscientious journeyers, everyday-yogis, self-employed entrepreneurs, bloggers, self-starters, and personal development practitioners express themselves more fully." NOTE FROM GREG: This episode is a very special and emotional one for me. I'm re-publishing a chat I had back in October 2014 with my friend Dr. Alice Bandy, which was the final episode of my first podcast Radio Enso. At the time of this taping, I had just met Alice about a month before, but she's since become a good friend and teacher to me. I'm re-publishing our chat now because Alice was recently diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. The cancer has spread to her bones and she's had a series of radiation treatments and surgeries to keep the cancer from moving to other parts of her body. She is also receiving very strong hormone and chemo therapies that are built for her specific type of cancer.  All of this has incapacitated her and she is working to regain her ability to walk. She requires round-the-clock care, the cost of which is very high. Alice’s income is derived from working with students, clients and organizations, which she is unable to do at this time. To help, some friends have set up a GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/AliceBandy. I'm asking all of my listeners, to please consider making a donation to help with Alice’s care through this challenging but important time in her battle. If anyone has a shot to beat this, she does! And through it all, her teaching and wisdom continue to inspire and change lives. So I'd love for you to take a listen.   For Life on Purpose Episode #83, my guest is author, teacher and spiritual guide Dr. Alice Bandy, the Spiritual Director of The Heart of Teaching, a nonprofit educational organization.    Alice joined me to talk about her book The Wisdom of Money: Listening to the Spiritual Message of your Finances, her online self-study course Consciousness of Wealth, and much more! "The Wisdom of Money is my book which walks the reader through a very intensive process of releasing old experiences, pains and resentments so that the natural flow of prosperity and well being can flow into their life. These exercise are based upon my counseling practice. I use them here for money issues, but they work equally well in relationship and health issues." About Alice: Dr. Alice Bandy is the Spiritual Director of The Heart of Teaching, a nonprofit educational organization. She has been leading transformative spiritual classes for adults since 1996. Alice has taught at many universities and is a favorite instructor at the Holmes Institute School of Consciousness studies.    In 2012, Holmes Institute granted her an honorary doctorate for her achievements in authoring, teaching and disseminating powerful spiritual courses throughout the United States. She lives in Encinitas, California. Her book, The Wisdom of Money: Listening to the Spiritual Message of your Finances was published in 2013.    "The Wisdom of Money is my book which walks the reader through a very intensive process of releasing old experiences, pains and resentments so that the natural flow of prosperity and well being can flow into their life. These exercise are based upon my counseling practice. I use them here for money issues, but they work equally well in relationship and health issues." This week on Life on Purpose, we celebrate a momentous occasion: my five-year podcast anniversary — during which time I've produced 56 LoP episodes and nearly 200 hour-long conversations overall! To help commemorate my journey, I'm joined by the man whose work and community inspired me to start my first podcast (Radio Enso) back in the summer of 2011: author and world-changer Chris Guillebeau. Chris joined me for a wide-ranging, inspirational, and personal conversation centered around his work and philosophy ("There's more than one way to live your life."); making deliberate and intentional choices in your life; asking, "How can I use my power for good?"; the changes and challenges he's faced since our previous conversation in 2012 including the loss of his brother; the annual gathering of world-changers and "non-conformists" that he hosts each summer in Portland (WDS); his new book Born for This: How to Find the Work You Were Meant to Do; and MUCH more! About: Chris Guillebeau is a New York Times bestselling author and modern-day explorer. During a lifetime of self-employment that included a four-year commitment as a volunteer executive in West Africa, he visited every country in the world (193 in total) before his 35th birthday. Since then he has modeled the proven definition of an entrepreneur: “Someone who will work 24 hours a day for themselves to avoid working one hour a day for someone else.” His first book, The Art of Non-Conformity, was translated into more than twenty languages. His second book, The $100 Startup, was a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, selling more than 300,000 copies worldwide. That was followed by The Happiness of Pursuit — published in September 2014 and also a New York Times bestseller. And in his latest book Born for This: How to Find the Work You Were Meant to Do, he's created a practical guide for how to find the perfect job — whether within a traditional company or business, or by striking out on your own. Plus every summer in Portland, Oregon, Chris hosts the World Domination Summit, a gathering of creative, remarkable people with thousands in attendance. He's also the founder of Pioneer Nation, Unconventional Guides, the Travel Hacking Cartel, and numerous other projects. Dave joined me for a great conversation about conscious life evolution, creativity, the freedom of NOT knowing, what he's learned from teaching yoga, habit change, cultivating the right container for personal and creative growth, the notion of "service", the importance of tribe, karma vs. dharma, and much more! About: Dave Ursillo is a teacher of writing, yoga and self-expression. He helps self-starters use their words, stories and voices to create healing within and share love in our world. For Life on Purpose Episode #41, my guest is artist, photographer, life coach, and mentor Andrea Scher, the creator of Superhero Life — "where we all learn together to use our voices, share our superpowers and live life in full color."Andrea joins me for a great conversation about her work as a creative, coach, and healer; her Mondo Beyondo talk at WDS 2011 that helped inspire my first podcast (Radio Enso); her creative practices and classes, and much, much more!About: I’m Andrea Scher, creator of Superhero Life — where we all learn together to use our voices, share our superpowers and live life in full color. As an artist, photographer, life coach + mentor, I’m redefining what it means to be a SUPERHERO — ‘cause in my world, it’s got nothing to do with capes, spandex or sidekicks and everything to do with tenderness, intuition & baby steps of bravery.Back in 1995 when I was living in New Orleans, a tarot card reader told me that I was an artist. At the time, I held an oh-so practical degree in Economics, and rarely shared my passion for painting + photography with anyone. (But then, you can’t fool a good psychic.)She also said that my real work was as a healer — that I would heal people through my art. All of the hairs on my arms pricked up. All I could think was: Yes! Yes! But how? I never forgot that wise woman (she is still my spiritual advisor to this day) or that quiet promise I made to myself — to fulfill my true calling, and be a healing force in the world. But first, I had to start with myself. I began painting every day.I began painting . . . to find freedom + flexibility. To find the joy in the mess. To keep myself feeling engaged and alive and curious — not necessarily to save the world, but simply to fully experience it.But that’s the beauty of doing what we love — we delight ourselves first, and we can’t help but serve others in the process. To me, a Superhero is someone who invites her wisest, bravest, most alive self to come out and play, every day. This doesn’t mean having all the answers, being unshakably strong, or performing dramatic feats of heroism. It means being someone like you – and someone like me.Someone who is anxious and uncertain, oh, say, 50 – 80% of the time. Someone who wants to live a juicy, full, courageous life — but doesn’t always know how. Someone who understands that vulnerability just might be the greatest superpower of all.“To me, a Superhero is someone who invites her wisest, bravest, most alive self to come out and play, every day."Superhero Life is a love letter + resourceful playground for all my fellow creative superheroes. Moms who want to paint. Painters who want to write. Writers who want to travel. And travelers who want to come home.I’ve been writing + teaching online for nearly 10 years — back when the web was a much quieter place. My intention is to make Superhero Life feel like a virtual oasis — a space for unhurried healing, beauty, and joy to unfold. To learn more about Andrea and her work: http://superherolife.com/.

Greg Berg is a man of many creative talents. He's a photographer, videographer, web designer, print designer, musician and radio podcast host. What's impressed me most about Greg is the intentionality with which he directs his life. After surviving an horrific car accident in his teens, where paramedics at first thought he was dead, he's focused on using his “bonus time” here on Earth to the best of his ability to bring out the best in other people. In the wake of being downsized from a couple of back-to-back jobs in a stumbling economy, Greg and his wife sold their St. Louis home, where he'd grown up and had deep roots, and moved to sunny San Diego in search of a fresh start. After establishing himself in a new region, in 2008, in the midst of another economic slump, he gave up his job as marketing director of one of the largest YMCA branches in the U.S. to pursue his passion for creating things of significance.Inspired by the inaugural 2011 World Domination Summit in Portland, Oregon, Greg started his first podcast, Radio Enso, tools and inspiration for conscious living. He produced nearly 150 episodes interviewing well-known guests such as Brene Brown, Chris Brogan, Nancy Duarte, Danielle LaPorte, Jonathan Fields, Chris Guillebeau and Pamela Slim. His aim was to find out what makes creatives, seekers and non-conformists tick. This past fall, Greg had the courage to make a change in his approach and direction. and embarked on yet another fresh start with his new podcast called Life On Purpose. With this new endeavor, he intends to drill deeper into helping people be more intentional with their daily habits and mindsets. As a musician, Greg's performed in front of thousands, and opened for many artists including Shawn Colvin, Ben Folds, and Dada.“The thing that I'm most scared to hit ‘Publish' on is probably the best thing I've ever written. The more afraid you are, likely the better it is. You're building this muscle – you do it once, you get a little better at it. You do it ten times and you're starting to build that muscle a little more. You do it 150 times, you've built up that muscle pretty good, it's not so hard anymore. You're still going to get a little nervous; there's going to be trepidation and fear, but you've built that muscle up enough now to where, it's this crazy thing, but you just say, ‘I'm just going to hit launch.' It's how your brain works.” ~ Greg Berg

Michelle joins me to discuss higher education re-imagined for the 21st Century, the importance of asking questions, passion-based leadership, and the crucial importance of real-world skills and experience. Many listeners also know Michelle as "Michelle the Magician", the behind-the-scenes guru at the annual World Domination Summit (WDS), that was the inspiration behind my first podcast Radio Enso. We talk about that experience and how she's applying what she learned there to her new venture. About: Michelle Jones is a former traditional model college professor who is starting her own college, the Wayfinding Academy. Her 15 years teaching leadership and organizational behavior courses at colleges and universities across the country has prepared her well to re-imagine what higher education can be with this new endeavor. She is also drawing on her experience organizing events and communities with TEDxMtHood and the World Domination Summit and founding non-profit organizations such as SuperThank. About the Wayfinding Academy: We're a group of professors, students, higher education professionals, non-profit and community leaders, and everyday citizens with over 100 years of experience in higher education who know college can be the incredible experience it promises to be. Right now too many students can't afford college, drop out, or even finish college without finding direction or purposes in their lives. We believe there is a better way. We are starting our own college. A new model for higher education. The Wayfinding Academy will be an affordable, 2-year college based in Portland, Oregon focused on what matters most in education: real world experience, community support and individual passion. Students won’t be asked to choose a major from a list, they’ll be supported in discovering their own personal mission. They’ll take core classes building skills that will serve them on any path. And they’ll work with advisors to create handcrafted experiences meaningful to them and build a portfolio through real experiences. That means I recognize many faces of the divine, and I admit I do not know what the divine is. In fact, I’m on a rather long quest to find out if it exists at all. I do know that there is a powerful, beautiful force that moves many people through their spirituality. But I don’t know what that force is. Instead of putting my faith in it, I prefer to travel, learn and ask questions. And I like to think that we all have the power to improve our own lives, starting with ourselves, no matter what we believe.About Fellowship of the Wheel: I’m bicycling across Mexico starting November 8 and I’d like you to come too. No cycling experience is necessary. I’ve divided the ride into 10 segments, some as short as 3 days and some as long as 7. My hope is that as many people as possible will try biking with me, and get a taste of adventure for themselves.

Join me on Monday, August 25th at 6 p.m. Pacific/9 Eastern on Radio Enso when I welcome Warren and Betsy Talbot from Married with Luggage. Warren and Betsy write about relationship hacks and insights on Modern Love. They challenge the prevailing ‘wisdom’ that relationships grow less exciting over time, or that you have to settle for less in love as you get older. They cohost the popular Married with Luggage podcast, a weekly conversation with experts around the world on love, sex, and communication in today’s modern relationships. When they aren’t traveling the world, you can find them writing their next book in a small, whitewashed village in Spain.About What We Learned About Love by Traveling the World: "A trip around the world…together; Think your relationship would survive it?" We weren’t so sure of our chances either, but after living, working, and traveling together 24/7, we’ve learned a lot about what’s important to a relationship – and (sometimes more importantly) what’s not. We’ve been married since 2004. That’s 10 years in regular human years, and a golden anniversary if you start clocking the hours we’ve spent together since selling everything we owned to live, travel and work together full-time in 2010. The sheer volume of time spent together in ever-changing environments around the world and while trying to make a living has forced us to learn lessons it might take years or decades to learn in a more conventional setting. And we’re happy to share the results of this life-sized experiment we’ve been living.

As my literary guinea pig experiment for Canongate Books draws to a close, the days begin to merge into one thanks to the addition of alcohol. But I have an excuse, as alcohol is mentioned by Edward Slingerland as one possible path to 'wu-wei' and 'de' when considering the perspective of Zhuangzi, our final philosopher (and a Daoist). p.s. if you're in the US, you can tune into my interview with Gregory Berg at Radio Enso tonight (Monday, June 23rd) at 6 p.m. Pacific/9 Eastern: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/radioenso/2014/06/24/radio-enso-131-with-milo-mclaughlin-of-clear-minded-creative Support this podcast at Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/milomc
