As an army brat, Madeline Martin learned to love libraries early on: they were a place where her literary besties awaited her — their lives comfortingly similar even as Madeline's shifted. She joins Julie to discuss her love of exhaustive research and its central role in all of her books, both romance and historical fiction. Madeline also outlines the unique challenge of writing romance, especially when balancing reality and fantasy (because characters in romance novels don't have morning breath). She then introduces Julie to a new goal-tracking system. These two Potterheads are already planning to vacation together! Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Book Writing with Sue Richardson Sue got into the book writing world 30 years ago. Prior to that she been in the theatre and academia. Her degree was in English and she was always passionate about books. Not surprisingly, Sue cut her teeth on academic journals. Then in the late 90s, she got the bug for creating her own publishing product. Sue got into textile art about 20 years ago. Graham wondered if the picture behind her was an example. What do you see in Sue's abstract painting? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Textile-Art-Sue-Richardson.mp4 Book Writing - what drives people to write books? The first thing is Sue works with authors who want to write a book that helps them develop their business. She calls it the KING OF CONTENT. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Sue-Richardson-Boo-Writing-The-King-of-Content.mp4 Sue mainly publishes business books. Her authors come from the food world - cooks and chefs; personal development. Which means they are all non-fiction and all her books take their author where they want to go with their business. Strategy 95% of the time Sue takes authors through their strategy session. It's not just about splurging your lengthy experience onto the page. Be cuter than that. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Book-Writing-Strategy-Session.mp4 Sue advises potential authors to firstly focus on the WHY first. So, why do authors really want to publish a book? Secondly, authors should focus on the WHO. Which means, who is the book for? And, be specific. Unusually, most potential authors dive in at the WHAT - I could write a book about this, or that. Sue summaries by saying, Authors should concentrate on the why and who upfront. Doing so will produce a book that is much more effective for you and your business. Kevin raised the idea of books being the front end collateral to get you into a campaign. It's about value, says Sue. If you get value, then you are on the right track. Kevin wants authors to be short and concise and don't overload the stories! Well, that's what Kevin says. Kindle, Audible or "real" Books? Sue would never publish a book without having a digital version of it. Audio book is exponentially growing. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Real-Books-or-Digital-Books.mp4 Books are a technology that remains relatively unchanged over a 1,000 years. Graham has a view that censorship is unnecessary. You can self censor. Discover More about The Right Book Company Website: https://www.therightbookcompany.com Graham downloaded an excellent guide on the steps you should take to publish a book. If Your WHO is Small, Do You Self Publish? The more niche a book is, the less likely a traditional publisher will be interested, but it'll sell more. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Sue-Richardson-Self-Publishing.mp4 And then Kevin asks another of his blistering questions: http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Blank-Screen.mp4 If You Liked This Podcast, Look at Other Book Related Podcasts #284 – Sandra Stachowicz – Book Marketing #186 Adam Witty – Puts the Author into Authority Marketing # 241 Steve Eggleston – Ghostwriting AUTHORITY GUIDES Sue also has a book in the Authority Guides series. Books are in the spotlight as we look at the future of real books, the kind you can hold, and the stores that sell them. Our first segment features a couple of Seattle bookstores reporter Anna Daniel visited during a recent broadcast trip to the northwest. People who make their living selling books were happy to discuss their confidence in the future of printed books, despite the online sales and electronic readers that have dominated the market in recent years. Then we have an in-depth interview with a former HTVer who is now an author. Matt Derrick was part of the very first broadcast class at Hillcrest. Late last year, he wrote a book about Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and it was (and is) a big hit regionally. He talked to Colby Bogle a little about those early days of HTV, and a lot about pulling together the Mahomes book in less than a month. The "Dig or Diss" segment features our staff sounding off about recycling and composting, post-travel woes, and a brand of shirt that does not handle perspiration well. Seriously, that was an actual thing we discussed.
