Send us a textIn this episode we discuss risk, success and failure in the context of international development and philanthropy, with Sarah Jeffrey (Vitol Foundation), Victoria Tayler (Risk Pool Fund) and Lonnie Hackett (Healthy Learners). IncludingWhat is the Risk Pool Fund and how does it work? What are the key market failures or needs it is designed to address? Are grantees often unwilling to highlight “failures” to their funders, for fear of losing future support? Are funders less likely to be objective in evaluating challenges faced by grantees when their own money is directly affected? Is a drive to keep “overheads” low part of the challenge? Can the collectivisation of risk through pooling offer reassurance to funders? How do you distinguish between foreseeable and unforeseeable problems? What role does RPF's External Review Panel play?Does the experience of organisations on the ground give them a different perspective on risk?Is scaling the goal? Would replication be more appropriate? Or is the aim to highlight a market failure and thereby change funder behaviour? Has the RPF had an impact on the perception of risk among the funders involved in it?Are the insights from the fund being used to inform any preventative work designed to reduce the risks of certain kinds of failures occurring? What impact are we seeing so far from the dismantling of USAID, and what should we expect to see longer term? Related Links:Risk Pool FundHealthy LearnersRisk Pool Fund model analysis reportRPF paper, "Charting the divide: When funders perceptions of risk collide with on-the-ground realities"WPM article on "Philanthropy at a time of chaos"Philanthropisms interviews with Ewan Kirk, Sadaf Shallwani and Martha Lackritz-Peltier.

Other talking points scattered across the pitch include: football as war, derby days and football rivalry; the joys of local non-league football, the Bundesliga and fußballkultur; to switch POV, or not to switch POV; the annoying beauty of David Beckham; and of course, we discuss the tragically under-utilized in fic friendship of Paul Scholes and Gary Neville (or, Scholesy as the Kermit to Gary Neville's Miss Piggy).  Join us, if you like! Have you ever wondered what it's like to be in the inner circles of Scientology? This episode offers a rare insight into the world of this enigmatic organization as we sit down with ex-Scientologist Dylan Gill. Dylan shares his arresting experiences from spending time in the infamous Sea Org and working alongside figures such as David Miscavige and Shelley Miscavige during a tumultuous period in the 1980s. From conceptualizing time machines to source information retrieval, Dylan's account uncovers the unique projects and the impact they had on the organizational dynamics.Imagine being barred from speaking to your own spouse. That's the reality that Dylan faced as he talks about Scientology's stringent regulations impacting his marriage. The psychological trauma he endured during his time in the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF) is difficult to comprehend, but a necessary exploration to understand the deep-seated fear and damage caused by radical belief systems. Dylan's reflections on those who suffered loneliness and isolation within the organization shed light on the grim reality behind its glossy exterior.Dylan's escape from Scientology's RPF is nothing short of a Hollywood thriller. Running through rivers and creek beds, battling fear, and surviving against all odds, he recounts his dramatic getaway and the subsequent struggle with homelessness. This week, V and Emily revisit one of their favorite topics -- "let teenage girls create bad art because it deserves to exist" -- as they recall one of several big Fanfiction.net content purges. This time, it was the total destruction of the RPF section, a loss of tens of thousands of stories in one fell swoop. Yes, V talks about Dream Street again. Yes, Emily talks about Backstreet Boys. Yes, there's a list of all of the fandoms that were murdered, and it's a total time capsule to the autumn of 2002.

Earlier this week, communal violence erupted in Haryana, spreading to Gurugram and other areas with reports of vandalism. The clashes in Nuh during a religious procession resulted in six deaths. The violence allegedly stemmed from rumors that a cow vigilante, Monu Manesar, involved in previous killings in Bhiwani, would attend the procession. However, as reported, Manesar did not show up at the event and claimed that he has nothing to do with the violence or the killings. Another distressing incident involved an RPF constable who shot and killed four people, including his senior officer and three Muslim passengers, on the Mumbai-bound Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express near Palghar railway station. The constable, Chetan Kumar, was later arrested by the Government Railway Police, GRP. These incidents raise concerns about India's internal security mechanism. The lack of police presence during the Haryana clash raises questions about the administration's preparedness and response. Why was the police not present during the Haryana clash? Is it unrealistic to even expect unbiased policing during such violent times? Why did the administration fail to prevent the planned violence from unfolding? Dev Goswami and "Def Savvy," Abhishek Bhalla, delve into the role of the police in internal security and why it often comes under scrutiny.  Also, the RPF incident prompts questions about provisions to handle 'mentally challenged' officers and why such an officer was allowed on duty, if that's the case. And do such hate crimes qualify as terror attacks? Listen in! Produced by Anna Priyadarshini Sound mix by Sachin Dwivedi

Summary: Sara takes (kind of sort of) a break from talking fanfic and bandfic to talk about a different form of storytelling– music, and writing about music! shineswithyou is a familiar face around Oasis and U2 tumblr, but what you might NOT know is that she has recently embarked on a writing journey of her own, with a substack blog about music and its place as the soundtrack of her own life. Sara and shines talk about her blog, and the difficulty of “writing words about sounds”; how music is a language in and of itself capable of telling its own (and our own) stories. Of COURSE we loop it back around to fanfiction and RPF (or, ‘real person fanfiction'), and how bandfic is, at its core, a pure form of love for the musical artist. Other talking points include: how awesome Bono is, and how we wish we could have been at Slane Castle in 2001; the perennial dysfunction of the Gallagher brothers; and the dichotomy of the U2 and Oasis fandoms. durée : 00:59:56 - Les Nuits de France Culture - par : Albane Penaranda - La secrétaire du général de Gaulle à Londres, Elisabeth de Miribel, se confiait dans "Mémoires du siècle" sur ce jour historique où elle a tapé à la machine le texte qui allait devenir l'Appel du 18 juin.

When does RPF (real-person fanfiction) turn from a hobby into a damaging force? Why did actual celebrity news sources pander to "Larries"? And how much fault actually lies at V's very sorry feet?

Long live Strekdom and may it always prosper! This week, Emily and V are heading to the original frontier of fannish culture: Star Trek fan clubs of the 1960's. It's super emotional, and the women who created the groundwork of everything we love today deserve our utmost respect for their sheer ballsiness and bananas love of Leonard Nimoy. Join us as we learn about Vulcanalia, discuss ditto machines, and basically write RPF about how much we love the OG fangirls of yore. Have you paid your membership dues? In Episode 185, “RPF Revisited,” Elizabeth and Flourish use a trio of listener letters to return to the perennially thorny topic of real person fiction. How does RPF fit into the broader fandom space in 2022? What does “canon” even mean when it comes to real people? How do fans reconcile with troubling new information about celebrities they've written and read about? And is RPF source material the same as fictional source material, or are there fundamental differences between the two?

Talkin' Fanfic  Episode No. - 304 Episode Title - Interview with Jeevey   Summary: Sara sits down with the amazing, sublime, talented Jeevey, a legend in the Oasis RPF and Gcest world. Jeevey talks about the challenges of finding time to express yourself amid real life responsibilities; telling the truth through amateur writing; the joys of RPF and her start in the U2 fandom; rejecting the shame of writing taboo topics, and why she likes writing about interesting, compelling characters versus ‘unproblematic' more acceptable figures (BORING!) Jeevey is also the fandom expert on Noel Gallagher's pre-Oasis career as a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, and his friendship (ahem) relationship, with the now legendary Mancunian Clint Boon. Jeevey chronicles a Clint/Noel romance in her beautiful ongoing work, “Transistor”. We also mention Jeevey's recent trip to the UK to see both Gallagher brothers in concert; a highlight of which was Jeevey's front row view of High Flying Birds' guitarist Gem Archer's rather, er, overwhelming and impressive physical presents. PRESENCE, I mean! Yes, Sara brings you another 3 hour episode, but c'mon. You know. What else you doin' today, rasta?! Don't Go Away, Stand By Me!
