There is a lot of gloom and doom in American Christian circles resulting from the continuing deterioration of a Biblical Christian worldview. However, RealClear Opinion Research just released the results of a survey (details here) that suggests that the famous Time magazine phrase “God is Dead” may have been premature. There is much that could be said about the data presented above. However, the numbers speak for themselves. We remain a country of believers in the supernatural regardless of how hard the minority view is pushed upon us. However, as much as we express a belief in God, Americans continue to reject the church as His foundation for our fellowship, teaching, and accountability. We may, as a nation, continue to pay lip service to our historical Christian beliefs, however, without sound teaching and the bringing up of our children in a Biblical Christian environment, we are in peril of merely stating our faith in God without having any idea what that truly means.

Full-text: A June 2023 RealClear Opinion Research survey of registered voters shows public support for school choice has increased seven points since 2020. Seventy-one percent of voters—up from 64% three years ago—say parents should “have the right to use tax dollars designated for their child's education to send their child to the public or private school which best serves their needs.” Support for school choice commands a strong majority across political affiliations. Sixty-six percent of Democrats, 80% of Republicans, and 69% of Independents polled said they support this definition of school choice. Seventy percent of Asian, 73% of Black, and 71% of Hispanic voters also said they support it. It's clear parents want more choices. This year, five states passed or expanded universal or near-universal school choice laws. Others expanded their state laws to include more students. States that are empowering parents to find the right fit for their children's educational needs are opening doors of opportunity for generations of students. It's time Oregon let the “money follow the child” so every student has a chance to succeed. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coffeewithcascade/message

QP: 72% Believe Parents Should Have School Choice

Full Text: The last two years have made it clear: Oregon parents deserve real choices in their children's education. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, government and teachers' union policies have disappointed and angered parents whose students' academic needs haven't been met by their assigned public schools. In addition, the online public instruction options available while schools were closed allowed parents to witness actual classroom teaching. These experiences have led parents to demand a meaningful say in where and how their kids are educated, and the ability to choose among a variety of education options. As parents “vote with their feet” for schools they believe are the best fit for their children, public opinion increasingly favors their ability to do that. A February poll by RealClear Opinion Research reports overwhelming public support for school choice. Participants were asked if parents should have “the right to use the tax dollars designated for their child's education to send their child to the public or private school which best serves their needs.” Black respondents supported school choice at 70%, Hispanics at 77%, and all respondents at 72%. As Oregonians move forward from their pandemic education experiences, legislators and policymakers should value all learning options that empower students to succeed. Education funding should “follow the child” so parents can choose schools that best meet their students' needs. It's time to fund students, not systems, and serve all children better through school choice. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message

Next week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to send a new voting rights bill to the Senate Floor. It is the latest attempt to “fix” the American electoral process, and it raises questions about what is exactly wrong, what can be done to improve faith in election results, and who wins and who loses from changing the way we vote. One thing we do know is that a lot of Americans don't trust election results. A Gallup poll from 2020 shows that only forty percent of Americans say they are confident in the honesty of US elections. Only one-third of Republican voters believe that the 2020 presidential election was “free and fair,” and after the 2016 contest, 28 percent of Democrats expressed skepticism that the votes had been counted accurately. So how bad is it? Are elections truly untrustworthy or is this a perception problem borne of political opportunism – where if you don't like the results, you attack the referee? Full Text: During the past 18 months, parents have taken a hard look at their children's schools and considered whether or not their students' educational needs were being met. This experience has led many families to make different education choices this year besides their assigned district public schools. Traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, online learning, private and parochial schools, homeschooling—and now micro schools and pods—are all paths to success for K-12 students. Empowering parents to choose among many options can unlock the unique potential of every child. More than half the states in the U.S. currently give families this power through educational choice programs. A RealClear Opinion Research poll released in June found that 74% of registered voters now support school choice, defined as “giv[ing] parents the right to use the tax dollars designated for their child's education to send their child to the public or private school which best serves their needs.” This is a substantial change in public opinion since early 2020. As Oregon moves forward from the pandemic school closures, policymakers must recognize that each family should be able to find the right fit for their students to learn effectively and safely. All options should be valued, and education policies should promote parents' ability to choose among them to help their children learn. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message
