Welcome to this episode in the new series of Local History Matters, the podcast run by the British Association for Local History (BALH) to highlight hidden local histories. In this series, we will be discussing with researchers how they got into their field of study, and what their topic can tell us about local history more generally. In this episode, our Social Media Fellow Megan Kelleher chats with Elizabeth Szarelis. Elizabeth has recently completed a Bachelor's degree in History at the University of Nottingham. She and her father, Michael, set up the Retford Remembrance Project in Nottinghamshire during the centenary in order to ensure that the war dead of their home community were remembered locally. This has recently included placing signs in local cemeteries to map out where the war graves are, and creating ceremonies associated with remembrance within that community. Elizabeth shared more about her research and the impact of the Retford Remembrance Project with Megan. You can follow along with the conversation about this podcast by using the hashtag #LocalHistoryMatters, and keep up to date with the work the BALH does by visiting our website https://www.balh.org.uk/ or following us on social media @BALHNews. Lauren Black from the Social Justice Sewing Academy talks about the opportunity her organization had to completely rethink the way they engaged volunteers, and to launch an entirely new volunteer engagement strategy during a pandemic. What do you do when a pandemic strikes and your organization's mission is running workshops for kids and teens? You launch an entirely new strategy engaging individual skills-based volunteers - at least that's what you do if you're the Social Justice Sewing Academy! Founded in 2017, the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a non-profit organization that aims to empower individuals to utilize textile art for personal transformation, community cohesion, and to begin the journey toward becoming an agent of social change. Prior to COVID-19, youth workshops and programs were at the core of the organization.Through a series of hands-on workshops in schools, prisons, and community centers across the country, SJSA used social justice and art education to bridge artistic expression with activism.  Many of our young artists made art that explored issues such as gender discrimination, mass incarceration, gun violence, and gentrification. The powerful imagery that youth created in cloth demonstrated their critique of issues plaguing their local and larger communities. These quilt blocks are then sent to volunteers around the world to embellish and embroider before being sewn together into quilts to be displayed in museums, galleries, and quilt shows across the country. While youth programming remains at the heart of SJSA, the civil rights movement of 2020 and the concurrent COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted SJSA's programming. Due to no longer being able to provide in-person programming and limited virtual youth workshops, SJSA launched a series of new initiatives to critically respond to the times, including the Remembrance Project. The Remembrance Project engages remote skills-based volunteers to create a quilt block to remember members of the community lost to violence. Time + Talent co-host Jennifer Bennett is a volunteer with SJSA and she also shares her experience volunteering during the Summer of 2020 with the Remembrance Project. Lauren currently works as a School Psychologist in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She recently completed her Masters in Educational Psychology and her Education Specialist Degree in School Psychology at Loyola Marymount University.  She is passionate about tackling issues that disempower people and erase their voices based on elements of their identity. The Honorable Greg Abbott Governor of the State of Texas P.O. Box 12428 Austin, Texas 78711 April 17, 2020 Dear Governor Abbott: The Chinese Coronavirus pandemic and the government-ordered responses to it are devastating the Texas economy and imposing untold harm on Texas families. The additional burden of the Russia-Saudi Arabia oil fight has compounded the economic drag. Thankfully, infections, hospitalizations, and even deaths have fallen far short of the worst-case scenarios some had projected. The virus appears to be on the decline worldwide and especially in Texas very soon – if not already. Texas should enact a clearly communicated and citizen-driven plan to prudently and carefully return Texans to work, to church, and possibly back to school. State Reps. Matt Krause and Mike Lang sent excellent recommendations, presenting strong suggestions on how to move the economy again and stand Texans back on their feet. Those recommendations include removing the distinction between “essential” and “non-essential” businesses; allowing restaurants, gyms, salons, and other businesses to reopen provided they take commonsense measures to maintain social distancing; and, continuing to waive regulations already waived for an extended and defined period. Both sets of suggestions are strong on “recommendations” and short on mandates. That is as it should be; trust your fellow Texans to self-govern. Lang and Krause offer a roadmap which, if correctly implemented, would do much to assist hardworking Texans in restoring normalcy and our state’s economy. A number of other ideas should be prudently reviewed and considered. For example, we strongly encourage you to re-open the state’s parks. Similarly, please force local entities to lift the onerous restrictions they have foisted on Texans and curtail their ability to impose others. Few are expecting or proposing an immediate lifting of all restrictions and recommendations imposed by the state as we seek to recover from this pandemic, but every restrictive order that remains must be justified with facts and accompanied by clearly communicated standards and timelines for its lifting. The people of Texas are strong and resilient. They have shown – both in this crisis and in every previous crisis – that they are willing to sacrifice for their neighbors in times of need. 2 They deserve the kind of leadership from their state officials that works with them to chart a course to recovery and an end to this diminished status quo. She shares how hard it has been for her, and her family, knowing that her son’s killer was let off easy. Agnes shares how the liberal policies in states like California are failing the American people. If people would only admit that the immigration crisis is not about having sympathy for immigrants-but really about certain politicians wanting more immigrants in this country-illegal or not-to sway the vote their way-we could arrive at a more rational solution! But, this doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. Today's guest, Maria Espinoza, National Director of The Remembrance Project, tells it like it is. After the recent spending bill, passed by Congress, failed to include enough money to build a wall, President Trump figured out another way to protect our national security: calling on the military to build the wall and/or patrol our border with Mexico. The Remembrance Project honors Americans and legal residents who have been killed by illegal aliens, so today's show discusses Kate Steinle and others, who would still be alive if sanctuary cities didn't exist. But, protecting the border isn't just about keeping illegal aliens out- it's about keeping terrorists out!

Church, Nov 5, 2017: Jesse talked about his speaking engagement at The Remembrance Project in Washington, D.C., where Steve Bannon was keynote speaker. Jesse told about how the illegal aliens are hurting the black community first, but they don't know it because they're angry and brainwashed to believe whites are "racist" (which isn't even a real thing) against them and against brown Hispanic people. Then Jesse asks the questions: Are you willing to bear your own cross? What does it mean to bear your own cross? Jesse brings up the way parents mess up their children, and how we are now ourselves — we are whoever we are traumatized by, usually our mothers, but sometimes our fathers. Jesse brought up Tyrese Gibson who made a scene on social media crying, "Don't take my baby!" One thing: We don't have friends. And another: You deserve everything you get in life. Jesse told one young man not to use "Christian" talk or Bible talk when he does not know it for himself. Satan imitates what's right, the light, and fools you into thinking you have the truth when you don't. Esteban from The Hake Report with Joel and Esteban talked about how he was into the spirit of New Age and Magick, and he thought he was better than others. It's an ego boost, but it's not real. Similarly, Christians repeat things they hear from people they look up to, or things in the Bible, thinking they are right, when they are not. READ: Are You Willing to Bear Your Own Cross? THE END OF ANCHOR BABIES? TRUMP PLANS TO END BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP NATIONAL IMMIGRATION ANALYST: Maria Espinoza, is the National Director of The Remembrance Project, which honors and remembers Americans and legal residents who have been killed by illegal aliens. She is of Mexican descent. "President Trump plans on ending birthright citizenship with an executive order to combat illegal immigration, he told Axios in an interview previewed Tuesday. “It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don’t,” Mr. Trump said. The president said it was “ridiculous” to be the only country with birthright citizenship and insisted that “it has to end.” Birthright citizenship was established 150 years ago when the 14th Amendment was ratified. It declared that everyone born or nationalized in the U.S. were citizens and given equal protection. There are at least 30 nations in the Western Hemisphere with forms of birthright citizenship, including both Canada and Mexico, according to a list compiled by the Center for Immigration Studies." Protests led by local anarchist organizations and chapters of the Democratic Socialists of America are spreading across America. Some are looking to disrupt deportations, others are demanding the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.), and still, others are simply looking to open the borders. The disturbing part is these protests are becoming more and more confrontational with the threat of violence seeming far more likely with each occasion. In what is looking to shape up as a "Summer of Unrest" Julio Rivera, small business consultant, political activist, writer and Editorial Director for ReactionaryTimes.com, will join me to discuss it.

Some liberal activists and journalists scrambled Sunday and Monday to delete tweets and social media posts incorrectly linking the Trump administration to an old photo of detained illegal-immigrant minors being held in a cage. The 2014 shot was actually taken during the Obama administration. The photo went viral as liberals, perhaps spurred by unrelated reports that Homeland Security "lost track of" almost 1,500 illegal-immigrant minors after they were released, mistakenly assumed the shot was taken much more recently and rushed to criticize the Trump administration's "cruelty." Maria Espinoza, National Director of The Remembrance Project, which honors and remembers Americans and legal residents who have been killed by illegal aliens, will join me to discuss it. Joining Audrey for this week's REELTalk - Illegal Immigration is the 2nd most important issue to Americans today. The death of tens of thousands of innocent Americans by illegals troubles many citizens. But you wouldn’t know this by listening to our representative in Washington. Isn’t one innocent American life lost…one too many? MARIA ESPINOZA, Director of The Remembrance Project will be with us to explore this and more! PLUS, If pro-life, pro-traditional family Americans listened only to the Left, they’d conclude that free speech belongs exclusively to those who worship political correctness or cultural Marxism. But thank God, the first amendment was based on Judeo-Christian precepts which grants free speech rights to all Americans. Is that stopping the Left’s campaign to silence Christians? General Counsel for the Christian Civil Rights Watch, MATT BARBER, will be here to clue us in. AND, Traditionally, leadership meant “I’m on top because I lead you.” But, servant leadership flips that on its head; it’s about the leader serving his employees, not the other way around. The message of servant leadership IS: “I’m here to make these people lives better – I work for THEM”. This is something critical that is missing from the most important part of our national security: Our Military. We'll get the facts on true leadership from MAJ FRED GALVIN! Born in Rotan, TX in 1962, Espinoza is an outspoken leading anti-illegal immigration activist. Interview with Jennifer Kerns, Beltway Correspondent. How will the brutal terrorist attacks in France affect American politics? Kerns reviews Democrat candidates' responses from last night's Democratic debate. Climate change? While each Democrat (and most every GOP candidate, actually) plans to continue allowing thousands more "refugees" into America, does their insistence on appropriate "vetting" indicate some reflexive concern? As Sen. Jeff Sessions queries, is accurate "vetting" of refugees truly possible? Meanwhile, pundit William Kristol says the Trump and Carson campaigns will "be hurt" by the events in Paris, as voters may look for more political experience in their candidates. But might Kristol be wrong -- yet again? What to make of the "draft Romney" sentiment in the GOP Establishment? We conclude with audio from a Trump speech in Beaumont, Texas as he is joined on stage by members of the "Remembrance Project" -- concerned American citizens who have lost loved ones to illegal immigrants.
