Milānas–Kortīnas olimpiskajās spēlēs 12. februāris Latvijas sportistiem bija tik raiba, gara un notikumiem piepildīta diena. Tāpēc secīgi vēlreiz pārlūkojam visu, kas saistās ar Latvijas sportistu startiem Itālijā. Vispirms no rīta skeletona trasē sportisko pusi aizēnoja ukraiņu skeletonista Vladislava Heraškeviča diskvalifikācija viņa ķiveres noformējuma dēļ. Par to jau daudz esam stāstījuši citos raidījumos. Bet mūsu skeletonists Emīls Indriksons pēc diviem braucieniem ir 17. vietā.  Bet Patrīcija Eiduka vakar iepriecināja gan mūs, gan pati sevi. Ziemas sporta veidu pamatu pamatā – distanču slēpošanā – viņai 10 kilometru intervāla startā milzīgā konkurencē augstā 15.vieta, apsteidzot daudzas ļoti spēcīgas slēpotājas. Un tā ir augstākā vieta visā Latvijas olimpiskās distanču slēpošanas vēsturē dāmām. Bet pēcpusdienā Latvijas līdzjutēju uzmanība atkal bija pievērsta Kortīnas ledus trasei, kur ar labām cerībām uz medaļu Latvijas kamanīnbraucēji devās komandu stafetē. Mazliet pietrūka – Latvijas komanda palika 4. vietā. Dienas noslēgumā uzmanības lokā bija gan hokejs, gan šorttreks. Hokeja drudzī varbūt pat paslīdēja garām tas, ka olimpisko spēļu šorttreka 1000 metru trasē Roberts Krūzbergs kļuva par pirmo latvieti, kurš sasniedzis A finālu, sacensības noslēdzot 5. vietā. Otram mūsu šorttrekistam Reinim Bērziņam 14. vieta. Hokeja laukumā Latvijas komandas pirmie pretinieki bija ASV izlase. Un mūsējie olimpisko turnīru sāka ar zaudējumu 1:5. Šodien mūsu hokejistiem diena atpūtai, bet jau rīt, 14. februārī, spēle pret Vāciju. Bet arī hokejisti, līdzīgi kā Patrīcija Eiduka un Roberts Krūzbergs vakar pamanījās pārrakstīt Latvijas sporta vēsturi. Tieši spēlē pret ASV nu jau oficiāli par jaunāko jebkad olimpiskajās spēlēs spēlējušo latviešu hokejistu kļuva nesen 18 gadus sasniegušais Alberts Šmits.

Tad, kad brīnišķīgā režisore Māra Ķimele 1994. gada 8. janvāra rītā nebrauca uz pašas režisēto izrādi III Senās mūzikas festivāla Valmierā ietvaros, viņas uzmanību neviļus nepiesaistīja Rīgas ielas asfalta segums. Gaisa temperatūra nebija mīnusos un ielas segums nedz mirdzēja, nedz laistījās fraktāļu struktūru skāvumā. Pilnīgi droši viņa tad neievēroja arī vienu no Latvijas arhitektūrā ievērojamākajiem funkcionālisma celtniecības paraugiem – bankas ēku Rīgas ielā 40 ar franču firmas Fichet seifu, kas pēc arhitektu Anša Kalniņa un Emmas Krēsliņas [2] projekta tapusi 1931./32. gadā. Autobuss brauca bez režisores pa Rīgas ielu tālāk pa parasto maršrutu. Dažas sekundes vēlāk viņa neievēroja arī kūpošos dūmus no katlu mājas skursteņa, veicot 90° pagriezienu no Rīgas uz Andreja Upīša ielu. Arī tipogrāfiju "Liesma" A. Upīša ielā 7 Māra Ķimele neaplūkoja pat pāris sekundes. Tas nekādi nebija iespējams. Autobuss tad nogriezās pa labi uz Beātes ielu – asfalts nemirdzēja un nelaistījās vēl joprojām. Var ticēt, ka režisore būtu bijusi gatava bez īpašām ceremonijām no autobusa kāpt ārā, kad tas iebrauca Raiņa ielā un neredzama vairs nebija arhitekta Arnolda Nikolaja Čuibes [3] projektētā, 1938./39. gadā celtā neoeklektiskā [bijusī] Valsts komercskolas ēka – tur viņas režisētajai izrādei bija jānotiek. No autobusa izkāpa senās mūzikas vokālā ansambļa "Canto" mūziķi. Dažas stundas iepriekš, Sietlā Krists Novoseličs [1] bija pabeidzis "Nirvana" [4] uzstāšanos "Center Arena" ar vārdiem: "Liels paldies, ka atnācāt, jūs esat brīnišķīga publika! Brauciet mājās prātīgi! Atcerieties, ja esat lietojuši alkoholu – nevadiet auto. Atcerieties iet balsot vēlēšanās. Atcerieties nešķērsot ielu tam neparedzētās vietās." [5] Bet "Canto" uzstāšanās bija paredzēta 17:00 ar itāļu zvaigznes Adriāno Bankjēri [6] slaveno komēdiju "Maza ballīte Karnevāla ceturtdienas vakarā pirms vakariņām" [7]. Ja man būtu bijusi humora izjūta, man "Mazā ballīte" būtu patikusi. Izrādes ievadā uz jautru sarīkojumu visus aicina Moderno Diletto tēls. Gribētos tulkot – Modernais diletants, bet google translate saka – Modernais prieks. Jau jūtama kaitinoša kņudoņa vēderā. Un jo tālāk, jo nepatīkamāk. Pēc uzrunas seko padsmit numuru virtene ar, piemēram, Kjodžas veču dziesmu, ar mīlētāju dziedājumu, ar tantes Bernadīnes stāstu par žagatu, kas lamājas. Vēl ir suņa, dzeguzes, kaķa un pūces kontrapunkts, kuru kāds asprātīgi nosaucis – "cantus fermus", muļķa mīlas madrigāls, vīna dzeršana un joki par sērkociņiem un lupatām. Respektīvi – ar katru numuru bēdīgāk. Uz atvadām "Moderno Diletto" sola drīz atgriezties ar jauniem jokiem. Apmēram tāds saturs – delartisks – šiem kumēdiņiem, ar kuriem režisore Māra Ķimele bija tikusi galā. Izrāde tika iestudēta kārtīgi. Tā ir ierakstīta Latvijas Televīzijā. Ansamblis "Canto" [8] bija lielisks un režisorei [9] nekas tur vairs nebija darāms! Kad iestudējums gatavs, režisorei ir jādod telpa izpildītājiem, jo mākslas darba atdošana publikai pilnībā attiecas uz viņiem. Šo izrādi uztvēru ļoti personiski – kāds tur vēl Modernais prieks? Vārdnīcā kļūda! Modernais diletants ir. Apvainojos. Tāpēc iestudējumu neredzēju. Fairport Harbor, on the south side of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Grand River, is considered part of the Cleveland, Ohio, metropolitan area. The first lighthouse in the harbor was a 56-foot brick tower built in 1825. The lighthouse that stands today is a 60-foot stone tower that began service in 1871. After a new lighthouse was built on a breakwater in the harbor in 1925, the government planned to destroy the old lighthouse. A number of organizations in the area objected, and the lighthouse was spared. In 1945, the Fairport Harbor Historical Society established a marine museum inside the old keeper's house. Museum highlights include a Fresnel lens and the infamous "ghost cat" story. Our conversation now turns to a growing public health and law enforcement concern here in Ireland — the rise of synthetic opioids on our streets and what authorities believe is a significantly increasing threat.   A new report from Forensic Science Ireland highlights the emergence of multiple new synthetic opioid substances, some far more potent than heroin, and a dramatic increase in large seizures of these drugs.   At a time when policymakers globally are also reframing how they tackle synthetic opioids — including a recent U.S. executive order that controversially declared fentanyl a “weapon of mass destruction” — we're joined by Professor Colin O'Gara, Head of Addiction Services at St. John of God University Hospital, Stillorgan, Dublin and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at University College Dublin (UCD).

The great French soprano Rachel Yakar died on 24 June 2023 at the age of 87. As she frequently performed opposite our last subject, Swiss tenor Eric Tappy, this episode makes a suitable pendant to that one. Celebrated for her transcendent performances of Baroque music, (Monteverdi and the French Baroque in particular), Yakar was (like previous podcast subjects Eugene Holmes, Oralia Domínguez, Hana Janků, Gwendolyn Killebrew, and Teresa Żylis-Gara) also a member of ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg, with which company she performed for more than 25 years, singing a dizzying range of repertoire, everything from Mélisande to Arabella, Liù to Rusalka, Euridice to Desdemona. She also performed Donna Elvira and the Marschallin at Glyndebourne; and was an unforgettable Poppea in the Ponnelle-Harnoncourt Monteverdi cycle filmed for Unitel. In her prime she was also a frequent visitor to the recording studio, singing everything from Rameau to Varèse, Mozart to Messiaen, with conductors from Harnoncourt to Boulez, Leonhardt to Nagano. She was also a devoted song recitalist and in the later years of her career, she made two recordings of melodies for Virgin Records with the admirable support of her long-term accompanist Claude Lavoix. For the majority of this episode, I have chosen excerpts from both of those recordings, featuring the songs of Fauré and Hahn, which include settings of poets central to their output, including Paul Verlaine, Armand Silvestre, Léconte de Lisle, and Théodore de Banville, supplementing it with additional material in French by Ravel, Lekeu, Clérambault, Messiaen, and Poulenc. Yakar, who, like Régine Crespin and Nadine Denize, studied under the French dramatic soprano Germaine Lubin, was renowned for her faultless technique, her acting prowess, her peerless French diction, and her communicative artistic sensibility, traits of which are all in evidence in all of her recordings from the 1960s through the end of her career in the mid-1990s. Yakar was especially treasured by her colleagues, friends, and students for the warmth and effervescence of her personality, and her devotion to passing on her knowledge and experience to a younger generation of singers. May you delight in the delicacy, humor, precision, and pathos of one of the most prodigiously gifted and versatile vocal artists of her generation. In 2018 an omnibus bill was signed into law that completely overhauled the way foster care in Alaska should work. That bill -- House Bill 151 -- passed the Alaska State House and the Alaska State Senate unanimously. The completed audit shows that OCS failed to implement most of the required reforms.Les Gara was the 2022 democratic candidate for governor of Alaska. He is a former legislator who served in the Alaska state house from 2003 to 2019. Throughout his time in the legislature he advocated for foster care reform and in 2018 achieved it with House Bill 151. Amanda Metivier is the director of the Alaska Child Welfare Academy at UAA and is the executive director and co-founder of Facing Foster Care in Alaska. She and her husband are foster parents who have provided homes for many youth over the past 15 years.Alaska faces a severe shortage of  licensed foster care parents.
