“You're reading these interviews [in the book The Bikeriders by Danny Lyon] and they're all interesting, but Kathy's are just fascinating. You could just tell she was a character, meaning she was just this interesting, dynamic person, a person that was trying to figure out how she found herself in this world because she really talks about walking into this bar and meeting this charismatic young bike rider. And so, it was a really beneficial crutch for me to kind of get into this world. And then before you know it, by the middle of the script, I'm writing words for Kathy that never existed. It didn't hurt that, in my research, I reached out to Danny and he turned over hours and hours of recordings. I would drive around town just listening to Kathy talk. I mean, I had this woman in my head and I felt pretty confident midway through the script that I could write in her voice. It just gave this perspective to a very masculine, aggressive subculture. It gave this feminine point of view, but to me it was just a really interesting point of view,” says writer/director Jeff Nichols about writing the character Kathy, played by Jodie Comer, in his film The Bikeriders. In this episode of the podcast, we speak to Jeff Nichols about his departure from Southern Gothic storytelling and going deep into the world of a 1960s motorcycle club for The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. We also discuss some of his other films like Loving, Take Shelter and Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey – a film Nichols thought would never get released. “I thought Mud was a failure. We had taken Mud to the Cannes Film Festival, and although we had a really nice reception there, you know, standing ovations and whatnot – no one bought the film. And we went an entire year with no one buying that film. In fact, no one ever did buy that film. The financier put up half the money to market and distribute that film and luckily, Roadside Attractions came in and put up the other half and then it became the film that everybody knows,” says Nichols. To hear more about Nichols's writing process, and his advice for building stories around “emotional impact,” listen to the podcast.
Pennsylvania has rich military history shown through many memorials and museums in the state. The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg is one of the largest museums in the world dedicated solely to the American Civil War. According to Jeff Nichols, Chief Executive Officer of The National Civil War Museum, visitors will explore a civil war one on one course. “If you think back to your college days, you get a little a little bit of a deep dive as you go through and you learn about the secession movement, how the states of the South left the union, the reaction to that, get into some of the battles of the war. As you go through the galleries, you learn about individuals, both well-known generals, for example, George McClellan from the U.S. Army or Robert de Lee from the Confederate side, but also individual soldiers. And it really takes you through this narrative ending eventually with the conclusion of the war, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the creation of the constitutional amendments. The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendment to our Constitution in the 14th is very relevant to this very day.” Tourists come from all over the world to experience the civil war museum. The museum was founded by former Harrisburg Mayor Stephen Reed in 2000. It’s now known as a city collection. “We're fortunate to have thousands of artifacts, 10,000 that we've added since we opened in 2000, one, for example. And as you go through, you'll see everything from armaments that were used, different types of weapons from swords to handguns to muskets and carbines and all these other experiences that accrued from on that the soldiers would have carried. You also, again, learn and see images of certain individuals at the very beginning. There's a very moving and powerful section about slavery. In our collection, we have, for example, a pair of pants that were worn by an enslaved child in the South in the 1840s. This is a pretty rare artifact to have something that that really was a tattered and at the time thrown away a garment.” As you pass through the museum, it is a very interactive experience. There’s various audio and visual components that tells a story of several people from the north, south, white soldiers, black soldiers, and civilians. “They're composites of real people. So, it's not an actual person that live, but the stories are accurate. And then we have these other dioramas where we have, for example, again in the slavery section, an entire scene that's dedicated to a slave market that was just outside the White House in Washington just before the Civil War.” CLICK HERE to visit the museum.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2023, Jeff Nichols released his highly anticipated sixth feature film, The Bikeriders. Unfortunately, instead of delivering another solid entry in his filmography, The Bikeriders exemplifies a troubling trend in modern filmmaking. The art of crafting a compelling American drama with a satisfying conclusion seems to be a fading skill, almost like a virus infecting the industry.
This week on Our Taste is Trash, Josh and Jade dive into a thrilling mix of crime, drama, and fashion. First, they discuss The Bikeriders, Jeff Nichols' gritty 2023 film that takes us deep into the world of a 1960s motorcycle club. The film features a star-studded cast including Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy. Next, they shift gears to cover the arrests linked to Matthew Perry's tragic death, uncovering the disturbing details behind the criminal network responsible. Finally, Josh and Jade take a whimsical detour to Paris as they unpack the drama-filled first part of Emily in Paris Season 4. They explore the never-ending love triangles, outrageous fashion, and the chaotic personal and professional life of our favorite American in Paris. Tune in for this jam-packed episode of Our Taste is Trash.

Just through star power alone, Jeff Nichols' The Bikeriders is an elegy for the home of a band of outsiders and misfits, eroded by time into something much more sinister and encroaching. We discuss the trio of movie stars at the film's center and its surprising power through familiar tropes.

This period crime drama has often been described as "Goodfellas with Motorcyle's" as it chronicles the saga of a Midwestern motorcycle club or "gang" in 1967 adapted from a non-fiction photo-book of the same name. The story focuses on Kathy (Jodie Comer) who is new to this world and has fallen in love with one of the drivers, Benny (Austin Butler) the charismatic, generally quiet biker whom she falls in love with, and Johnny (Tom Hardy) the intimidating leader of this recently formed gang - each of them are loosely based on real people as are several others in this stacked cast including Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, and Norman Reedus. As directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter, Midnight Special), we follow their adventures on the road and off....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Join me for a classic American road trip with the legendary photographer, photo-journalist, writer, and film-maker Danny Lyon. Danny left the University of Chicago in the 1960s and headed South to join the great Civil Rights Movement, where he became the official photographer of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. We will visit the Black Freedom Movement together, but we will also revisit his groundbreaking documentary photographs of prison life in Texas, the gripping story of a friend of his who was also one of America's Ten Most Wanted fugitives, and his involvement with the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, which he documented in The Bikeriders (1968), a collection of black and white photographs with accompanying interviews that was released the year before the classic “Easy Rider.” That work of photojournalism is the inspiration for Jeff Nichols' contemporary film of the same name. His memoir, This is My Life I'm Talking About, was just released. Danny Lyon's website is bleakbeauty.com where you can read his blog, and view his films for free on Vimeo.
On this week's episode, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) discuss two new movies this week. First up is Inside Out 2, which is smashing box office records for an animated film. But is it any good? And then they discuss The Bikeriders, Jeff Nichols's new picture that might be described as “Midwestern Motorcycle Club Goodfellas.” On this Friday's bonus episode, we're going to pay homage to Donald Sutherland, so we hope you swing by for that. And if you enjoyed this episode, we hope you share it with a friend!

Summer brings big movies with A-list stars and weird little indie gems, and we're here for all of it at Breakfast All Day. This week, we review "The Bikeriders," the latest from writer-director Jeff Nichols. It stars Tom Hardy, Austin Butler and Jodie Comer and is based on a real Midwestern motorcycle gang from the 1960s. We do not agree on this movie! It's in theaters now. But we both loved "Thelma," featuring 94-year-old June Squibb in her first leading role. The delightful action comedy is inspired by a scam that actually happened to writer-director Josh Margolin's real-life grandma. It's also in theaters. And we wrap up with "Tuesday," featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus in a rare dramatic performance as a mother negotiating with Death when it comes for her 15-year-old daughter in the form of a brilliant, talking macaw. This won't be for everyone, but if you can get on its wavelength, you'll find it quite moving. In theaters now. As always on Fridays, we begin with Movie News LIVE!, where we pay tribute to the late, legendary Donald Sutherland, who died this week at age 88. Keep an eye out on our Patreon, where we'll devote the next Off the Menu poll to his staggering body of work. And speaking of our Patreon, we wrap up "Bridgerton" season 3 and continue slogging through "The Acolyte." Join us and share your thoughts! And thanks as always for being here. * Going camping this summer? Lodge Cast Iron has a great sale going on outdoor cookware and accessories, including camp dutch ovens. For this week's main podcast review, Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Sara Clements, Danilo Castro & Tom O'Brien, and I are reviewing the latest film from director Jeff Nichols, "The Bikeriders," starring Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, Boyd Holbrook, Damon Herriman, Beau Knapp, Emory Cohen, Karl Glusman, Toby Wallace, Norman Reedus & Happy Anderson. After its world premiere at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, the film passed from 20th Century Studios to Focus Features, and its theatrical release was delayed from December 2023 to now, in the summer of 2024. Jeff Nichols is the director of the film, The Bikeriders, a story about a 1960s motorcycle club that turns into a menacing gang, known as the Vandals. The film is adapted from Danny Lyon's book of the same title. The complex nature of The Bikeriders, leaves us asking, “Why are we attracted to dangerous things?” In today's episode, No Film School's Jason Hellerman speaks with director Jeff Nichols to discuss: Feeling inspired by a photographic documentary book Deliberately changing the film's structure from the first hour to the second hour The importance of character point of view Why the film style felt appropriate for this story Casting and location scouting - two of the most important parts of the process Using photos from the book for location inspiration Feeling drawn to dangerous characters Why he doesn't block scenes or rehearse with actors Using a documentary-style editing structure When Jeff realized this story needed to be a movie Memorable Quotes “It was by design that the first hour would have one feeling, and the second hour would have another.” [7:58] “These actors are so damn good. I just get to sit back and watch. Sometimes I forget to yell cut.” [16:14] “I was trying to build the script on the page to feel like it had been collected and put together like a documentary.” [22:45] Mentioned The Bikeriders (trailer) The Bikeriders (book) Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! "The Bikeriders" had its world premiere at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, where it was initially supposed to be released in theaters by 20th Century Studios. A few months later, the distribution was passed over to Focus Features, and now, almost a full year later and eight years since the release of his last feature film, we finally have a new movie from writer/director Jeff Nichols. One of the most accomplished and beloved storytellers working today, Nichols always manages to find the humanity in his characters as he plunges them into depths of moral complexity set against the backdrop of rural areas and here does so yet again with his biggest budget and cast to date. Making his debut on the Next Best Picture Podcast, Nichols was kind enough to talk with us about his latest film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters this weekend from Focus Features. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... We return this week to one of the Oscar years we bemoan the most, 2011, to talk about Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter. After Michael Shannon landed a surprise acting nomination for Revolutionary Road, it seemed he'd somewhat cornered the market on onscreen psychosis. In this film, he plays a rural father who begins to see apocalyptic visions … Continue reading "296 – Take Shelter"
Our latest guest on Soundtracking is the wonderful Jeff Nicholls, who joins us to discuss his brilliant new film, The Bikeriders. Inspired by a book of the same name by photo-journalist Danny Lyon, it tells the story of The Vandals MC, a motorcycle club from Illinois in the 60s, and features a fantastic cast including Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. By Jeff's reckoning, The Bikeriders showcases over 30 needle-drops, so plenty to discuss.
