MARC AND RICH talk: - Big 12 -"how good was the league?" - team tenacity - should we add teams?
The Sons of UCF spoke with former UCF Baseball Coach Jay Bergman in a wide ranging interview covering his career with the Knights. Bergman was named coach in 1983, taking over a program that was behind in facilities, lacked a recruiting budget, and without a culture of consistent success. Over the next 26 years, Bergman helped to usher UCF Baseball into a new era, buttressed by the performances of MLB caliber players such as Chad Mottola, Justin Pope, Dee Brown, Jason Arnold, Mike Maroth, and a young Rich Wallace (now the current UCF Head Baseball Coach). Bergman's tenure with UCF came to an end in 2008 amidst allegations of misconduct, and he has largely steered clear of UCF since. However, with the appointment of Wallace as head coach, Bergman has had an opportunity to re-join the Knight community he served for so long. It's been a busy off-season for the Florida State Seminoles baseball team. After last year's early departure from the regionals, FSU's leadership made the decision to go in a new direction with the hiring of Link Jarrett from Notre Dame, ending over 40 years of the Martin family leading the Seminoles on the diamond. The former Florida State shortstop hit the ground running with an overhaul of the Seminole coaching staff and revamping a team that lost several key members — including weekend aces Parker Messick and Bryce Hubbart, who were both taken in the MLB draft. In total, Jarrett and staff welcomed 21 new players to the roster. Needless to say, there's a lot of “new” for the 2023 season. To help fans prepare for all the changes, Tomahawk Nation caught up with the best Florida State baseball beat member, TN alum and current Noles247 contributor Brett Nevitt. We'll break down how Jarrett, pitching coach Chuck Ristano, hitting coach Rich Wallace, and the remaining staff's approach differs from past leadership, plus: Does FSU have a future MLB stud in Cam Smith? Good morning... good afternoon... good evening... No matter what time you're listening, yes, you've made it to the Friday edition of Noles News Now. I'm your host, Brian Pellerin who will be guiding you in to the weekend with the latest news and notes from around Florida State football, baseball, and more. The biggest story to look ahead to is the unofficial start of ACC football season next week with the ACC Football Kickoff media days in Charlotte. The Seminoles will be sending veterans Jordan Travis, Fabien Lovett, and Jammie Robinson alongside Mike Norvell on July 20th - that's next Wednesday. The Noles will be just more than a month away from taking the field for the first time at that point and two months from beginning ACC play on a Friday night in Louisville. An announcement from ESPN this week actually slid that kickoff back 30 minutes so kickoff for that game is now at 7:30 pm, in case you've got to adjust your calendar or travel plans. It's been a busy summer on the recruiting trail for the Florida State Seminoles coaching staff as they continue to shape the future of this roster. One of the biggest areas to address is solidifying the trenches and recent offensive line commit Roderick Kearney looks to be the centerpiece of that effort going forward. This week, he joined our Florida State of Recruiting podcast for an interview about FSU, new offensive coordinator Alex Atkins and much more. Check it out to hear from Big Rod, a leader of the Noles for the future. Of course, Atkins was a huge part in landing Kearney and many other commits this offseason. He's been an incredible asset on the recruiting trail for FSU so the question is how does he rank in compared to other Florida State's other top recruiters of the past decade. David Stout tries to tackle that in a column posted to Tomahawk Nation dot com this morning. There have been some great assistants and Atkins is off to a strong start to be among if not the best of the bunch. Link Jarrett is hoping his newest hire will also be a major recruiting ace for the Noles as he's landed his first recruiting coordinator as the head man of FSU. Jarrett announced Thursday that Rich Wallace will make the jump from Notre Dame to Tallahassee with him to join the Noles coaching staff in the recruiting coordinator role. Wallace already has ties to the Sunshine State with his experience at Jacksonville and UCF. One day before FSU football starts their season next month against Duquesne, the athletic department will induct the newest members of the Florida State Hall of Fame class announced this week. In total, 10 Seminole greats will have their names added to the hall including football stars Snoop Minnis and E.G. Green, golf star Brooks Koepka, baseball player of the year James Ramsey, soccer greats Amanda Dacosta and Toni Pressley plus others from tennis, swimming and diving and more. That'll do it for this edition of Noles News Now. If you like what you hear, remember to subscribe, follow and rate the show to help us out and let other Noles fans know about the easiest way to stay up to date on all things FSU 3 times a week. Born in 1911, Mildred Ella Didrikson Zaharias, who went by the nickname “Babe,” was a phenomenal, and confident athlete. Babe won Olympic gold in track and field, was an All American player in basketball, pitched in exhibition games in Major League Baseball, and won 17 straight women's amateur golf tournaments, before turning pro and co-founding the LPGA.In a society that didn't welcome women like Babe, she nonetheless forged her own path and won the hearts of fans along the way. I'm joined in this episode by History Professor Dr. Corye Perez Beene, author of the biweekly newsletter Awesome American Sports, who makes the case that Babe was the greatest American athlete who has ever lived. Race Against Time by Sandra Neil Wallace and Rich WallaceWhen the sharecroppers got together to discuss how to unionize, they knew they were doing something dangerous. After all, black people in the United States didn't just decide they wanted to get a fair shake of things. After all, historically speaking, why would they think that was even possible? And in 1919, especially in the South, there was no way they were going to get fair prices for the cotton they had spent months growing and cultivating, unless they worked together. Even as they headed into the meeting at the church, they were nervous. Nervous enough to hire guards to be on the look out. But what happened was beyond their worst imaginings.A white mob of law enforcement as well as other members of the town of Elaine, Arkansas began shooting into the church and ran off the people in it – including women and children. Many fled for their lives into the surrounding woods and fields and many more were gunned down as they tried to run. It is estimated around 250 blacks were killed over that night and the next few days. Twelve black men were arrested and charged with murder. Most were tortured to get them to falsely confess. All were sentences to death. Enter Scipio Africanus Jones, a man who had been born into slavery and through perseverance and determination, became a self taught lawyer. Recommended for grades 7 and up.
Rich Wallace rose from a childhood in foster care to become a self-made activist and serial entrepreneur, and his youngest son Jason has built a 15-year career in politics, public service, and podcasting. We talk with them both about how their different childhoods inform their different parenting styles, why Jason developed his ambitions in third grade, and that time when Jason accidentally creeped on the Obamas. Jason Wallace wants his Office of Fathers, Men, and Boys to give dadfluence the governmental backing and outreach it needs. When the District of Columbia becomes a state, we look forward to supporting his eventual Senate campaign.

Unelectable is an live podcast event series that engages electoral politics through the filter of radical imagination. Come chop it up with us, imagine new worlds, and help us build our Unelectable platform! AirGo and Black Youth Project are using the 2020 election cycle to have tangible conversations about impactful issues dismissed as being too big or unrealistic by mainstream political media. We want to expose the tensions that come from engaging electoral work as a liberatory pathway, reconciling complex contradictions within our movements and communities. The third and final event in the series, taking place just a few days before the 2020 election, focuses on the liberatory potential of Abolition Democracy, and how the seeds of this future are being sowed today. Richard Wallace is breaking down our economy. And not just explaining it–like trying to break it down into pieces and rebuild it more equitably. He’s the founder of Equity and Transformation (EAT), an organization that works with individuals operating in the informal economy to uplift the faces, voices, and power of the vast disenfranchised and excluded Black workforce in Chicago. He’s also a member of the now-defunct but incredibly influential Chicago rap group BBU, and a contributing member to the Hoodoisie. Music from this week's show: Jumpers - BBU
Investigative journalists Sandra Neil Wallace and Rich Wallace are award-winning novelists and nonfiction authors. FIRST GENERATION: 36 TRAILBLAZING IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES WHO MAKE AMERICA GREAT is a boldly illustrated guide that celebrates the genius, diversity, and grit of immigrants and refugees to America. *** "This book takes figures from all races, nationalities, and religions and looks at them as human beings and at the amazing things they have accomplished... A deeply patriotic look at how immigrants' application of the American ideals of hard work and perseverance can have lasting effects." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review
February 12, 2018 - For Black History Month, our time machine piles readers 4 to 8 years old into their car seats, and introduces them to a hero who overcame segregation and many other obstacles, to pursue his artistic dream -- and that's after being a star NFL player. Returning to the show is Sandra Neil Wallace, who last joined us with her husband and co-writer Rich Wallace to discuss their books Bound by Ice: A True North Pole Survival Story and Blood Brother: Jonathan Daniels and His Sacrifice for Civil Rights. You can hear those conversations in our archives at HistoryAuthor.com or wherever you catch the show. Sandra's latest book is titled Between the Lines: How Ernie Barnes Went from the Football Field to the Art Gallery. In it, young readers will find the story of a pro-football player, brought to life with by Sandra's prose and Bryan Collier's watercolors. Bryan Collier is an award-winning illustrator, whose art won first place in a 1985 congressional competition and later earned him a scholarship to New York City's Pratt Institute. Watch him draw at this Facebook Live event or check out his work at BryanCollier.com. You've seen Sandra Neil Wallace's work as a news anchor and ESPN sportscaster, and you'll recall that she was the first woman to host an NHL show on network television. Visit her at SandraNeilWallace.com, @SandraNWallace on Twitter and Facebook.com/SandraNeilWallace.
October 30, 2017 - This week, our time machine bolts on its studded snow tires for a freezing journey to the North Pole -- a trip we'll make long before GPS, cell phones, or Gortex gloves -- with Gilded Age explorers aboard the schooner USS Jeannette. Returning to the show are husband-and-wife writing team Rich Wallace and Sandra Neil Wallace. They last joined us to discuss their book Blood Brother: Jonathan Daniels and His Sacrifice for Civil Rights. You can hear that chat in our archives at HistoryAuthor.com, or wherever you're listening. Their book today is a world away from the sweltering Alabama heat of the 1960s. It's Bound by Ice: A True North Pole Survival Story, and it's aimed at readers nine to eighteen years of age, although I enjoyed it even at a good distance beyond my high school graduation. You've seen Sandra's work as a news anchor and ESPN sportscaster, and Rich has written over three dozen novels for children and teens, including such as Babe Conquers the World co-written with Sandra. The Young Adult Library Services Association named his novel Wrestling Sturbridge, one of the 100 Best of the Best for the Twenty-First Century. Well, now, that was an interesting two weeks, wasn't it? Since our last episode aired: Creighton's baseball program couldn't cash in on its status as host institution, falling short of a Big East Tournament title despite being the event's top seed. Creighton men's hoops recruiting targets Brian "Tugs" Bowen and Tremont Waters committed to other schools. Oh, and Greg McDermott turned down a lucrative offer to jump ship and coach at THE Ohio State University. Bryant Ott, Matt DeMarinis and Joey Tempo touch on all of that and more in Episode 27 of the Bluejays Bytes podcast. Plus... Matt D. breaks down what he's seen so far from men's hoops newcomers like Mitchell Ballock. Joey catches us up on what's happening on the recruiting front. We find out the favorite classic ice cream flavor for all three show participants. Oh, and did we mention our exclusive, 40-minute sit-down with Creighton baseball assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Rich Wallace? Matt brings Jays fans an up-close look at a stressed out assistant tracking MLB's draft, seeing where incoming recruits and current players alike might be picked.
Data sprawling all around us, certainly does not mean those managing IT are having fun! If you think about the kind of organisations many of us are a part of, then we understand what a critical asset our data is and how getting the best from it can give us real edge in our organisations field. But there is so much of it to manage, not just the production data, but the copies that we also have, backups, dev, test and QA, to name just a few. In this episode I speak with Rich Wallace of Catalogic Software and discuss the data sprawl challenge. Full show notes are here - http://wp.me/p4IvtA-Cc
October 17, 2016 - This week, our time machine travels back to 1965, where we'll meet Jonathan Daniels -- a white seminary student who answered Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s call to help with voter registration in Loundes County, Alabama. After the voting rights marches, Daniels remained to assist civil rights workers -- and gave his life saving black teenager Ruby Sales from a shotgun blast. Today, you can find Dr. Sales at The Spirit House, still working for the cause of civil rights. Rich Wallace and Sandra Neil Wallace -- like Jonathan Daniels -- live in New Hampshire, where they discovered this local hero's sacrifice through his letters, papers, taped interviews, and stunning photographs -- many, never before shared with the public. The result is the book, Blood Brother: Jonathan Daniels and His Sacrifice for Civil Rights. You've seen Sandra Neil Wallace's work as a news anchor and ESPN sportscaster.
