When the clock hit triple zeroes on Florida State's 35-32 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Cheez-It Bowl capping off their first 10-win season since 2016, high expectations for 2023 started to be formed. With announcements to return to school from Jordan Travis, Fabien Lovett, Jared Verse, and others, those expectations boiled over. In ESPN writer Mark Schlabach's Way-Too-Early rankings from January 9, the Noles were No. 4 behind only the Georgia Bulldogs, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Michigan Wolverines. According to DraftKings, Florida State has the 7th best odds to win the 2023 national championship (+1800), behind Georgia (+230), Alabama (+500), Ohio State (+700), Michigan (+900), USC (+1400) and LSU (+1600). But now some of ESPN's more analytics-based projection systems appear to be tempering some of those expectations. ESPN's SP+ rankings have Florida State at No. 11 in the country and consider FSU's ceiling to be 11-1 and floor to be 8-4, with a 19% chance of finishing 11-1 or better. Its FPI rankings have FSU at No. 14, with a 17% chance of winning the ACC, 4.4% chance at making the playoffs, 1% at making the national championship and 0.2% at winning the title. On this week's episode, the Seminole Wrap crew — Brian Pellerin, Jon Marchant and Max Escarpio — discuss their thoughts on those projections and where they fall on Florida State's prospects in the fall, as well as thoughts on a new wave of transfers leaving the program. You can catch the latest edition of the Seminole Wrap on the Everything Noles podcast channel, presented by the Fans First Sports Network network. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back to another episode of Locked on Seminoles! Drake and Dave continue the way-too-early position previews, finishing the offensive side of the ball with the big guys up front along the offensive line. Once again in 2023, Florida State's defensive line appears to be the most talented, sure-thing of any position group on the roster. In 2022, the Seminoles figured to boast one of the premier interior defensive lines in the nation, but had a massive void to fill on the edge after Jermaine Johnson etched his name in FSU lore and earned himself a pick in the first round of the NFL Draft - which highly-anticipated newcomer transfer Jared Verse was expected to help fill. By season's end, Verse had lived up to the hype and become one of the most feared and disruptive pure pass rushers in the ACC and nationally, and Fabien Lovett demonstrated the stark difference in the defensive play as a whole when without him in the lineup, meanwhile youngsters such as Patrick Payton and Joshua Farmer forced their way into playing time, complementing a high-throttle offensive and helping the Seminoles to a 10-win season. Florida State brings back mostly all key contributors along the defensive line, including Verse and Lovett, and adds even more key, proven talent from the transfer portal, in Braden Fiske, Darrell Jackson, and Gilber Edmond, giving the Seminoles enormous quality depth. With that in mind, Drake and Dave discuss expectations and performance of the defensive line in 2022, wants, needs, and room for improvement for the defensive line play in 2023, and breakout candidates who could force their way into a starting spot in a crowded and talented defensive line by season's end. Florida State ended 2022 in style, with a fun 35-32 win over Oklahoma. And it started 2023 with a bang, retaining standout defensive tackle Fabien Lovett while landing a commitment from elite cornerback transfer Fentrell ‘Deuce' Cypress. This episode of On The Bench is sizable, going over the return of Lovett and the addition of Cypress. But first we dive into the bowl win, FSU's remarkable culture, and dive into a nuanced discussion on both the defense under Adam Fuller and the Transfer Portal. Oh, we also play some Buy or Sonnone (thanks to The Turner Group!!!) and drop some intel on a few remaining portal targets. You can subscribe to On The Bench, X's and Noles, and Beyond The Bench on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify. As always, five-star reviews and comments on Apple Podcasts are appreciated! Welcome back to another episode of Locked on Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast! Drake and Dave celebrate Florida State's first 10-win season since 2016, following its victory over the Oklahoma Sooners, as well as the announced return of star DT Fabien Lovett and the transfer addition of lockdown CB Fentrell Cypress from UVA. First, Drake and Dave offer their thoughts on Mike Norvell and the Seminoles' hard-fought 35-32 victory over Oklahoma in the Cheez-It Bowl, including an offense that's still humming and a defense that took Oklahoma's best and survived. Then, the guys delight in the news that star defensive tackle Fabien Lovett—arguably the most impactful player on FSU's defense—will forego the NFL Draft and return to FSU for another season, alongside the myriad of other returning impact players, and explain why his return is so important and what it could mean for the defense in 2023. Finally, they celebrate even more big news, with true shutdown CB Fentrell Cypress announcing his transfer to Florida State, and discuss what that addition could mean for the defense, and what remains to be done in the portal to maximize the 2023 season. No. 19 Florida State (8-3, 5-3 ACC) took care of business against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday, dominating the Sun Belt opponent to the point that backups were able to enter the game early in the third quarter. They took a 49-17 victory behind phenomenal performances from the starting defense and rushing offense. It was FSU's fourth straight blowout win, giving the Seminoles eight total on the year just two seasons removed from a 3-6 debut season for Mike Norvell. After the game, Norvell, Fabien Lovett, Treshaun Ward, DJ Lundy, and Robert Scott spoke on the team's performance and thoughts ahead of next week's rivalry matchup vs. the Florida Gators. Welcome back to another episode of Locked on Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast! Drake and Dave relish in Florida State's utter domination of a hapless and embarrassing Miami football team, and highlight the equally impressive play of the defense and the offense, as the Seminoles tie the largest margin of victory EVER in a road game in this rivalry, winning 45-3. First, Drake and Dave take a victory lap, explaining just how bad that Miami team is (and how much worse they've gotten) under $8 million head coach Mario Cristobal, as the Hurricanes not only didn't belong on the same field as Florida State, but moreover they acted like they didn't even want or care to be there. Contrast that to a Seminoles squad that understood the importance of the rivalry and making a statement therein, as all phases of FSU (including backups) kept their foot on Miami's throat for 4 full quarters. Next, the guys gush over the play of the Florida State defense, with too many incredible individual and team efforts to list off in 30 minutes, including Jammie Robinson's disrespectful TFL (the highlight of which will live on forever in this rivalry), Fabien Lovett's uplifting presence for the defensive line and the defense as a whole, Tatum Bethune's homecoming statement, Jared Verse thanking Miami for only adding to his soon-to-be NFL paycheck, youngsters such as Patrick Payton and AZ Thomas showing out, and plenty more. Finally, they highlight the play of the offense, starting with a monstrous, Dalvin Cook-like performance in which he refused to be tackled by Miami's indifferent and undisciplined defenders, as well as an impressive performance by Jordan Travis (who wasn't asked and didn't have to do much in this one), incredible catches by Pokie Wilson and Johnny Wilson, and last but certainly not least a statement game from Florida State's offensive line giving JT13 all the time he needed and opening up running lanes for the Seminoles' stable of running backs (which didn't even need Treshaun Ward in this one). The last time Wake Forest had a three-game winning streak over Florida State in football was 2008 — also the same year that the two teams met for the first time as ranked opponents. The second iteration of a top 25 game ended up just as unpleasant for FSU, with the No. 23 Seminoles failing to overcome a poor first half and falling to No. 23 Wake Forest 31-21. FSU was a six-point favorite. FSU mustered just 7 points in the first two quarters of the game, sputtering on offense after an 83-yard touchdown drive to start the contest. Its inability to stay on the field was coupled by an inability on the defense's part to get off it — at halftime, the Demon Deacons were seven-of-12 on third, a large reason behind its 21-7 lead. Florida State came out firing in the second half, managing to cut the lead to a touchdown early in the fourth, but Wake Forest managed to drive 75 yards to more or less put the game away with just under four minutes left. The Demon Deacons had four drives of 70+ yards, scoring points on all of them. It was obvious early on that FSU was sincerely missing the talents of defensive lineman Fabien Lovett and offensive lineman Robert Scott, both of whom would have made a major difference in attacking and defending a Wake line that came to play on both sides of the ball. Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald, who has struggled this season, was zero-for-two on the day. The loss is Florida State's fourth straight as a ranked team (2018 Virginia Tech, 2017 NC State, 2017 Alabama) and likely will push the Seminoles out of the poll once more. Finally closing the door on the dog days of summer, Fall Camp is right at our doiorstep and no one is more fired up than your folks here at Locked Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast, to get you primed and ready to go for the 2022 college football schedule. Today, Max and Drake are pumped up for fall camp and want to touch on what they want to hear, see and expect form the Seminoles this camp staring with the unquestioned QB1 Jordan Travis. With this being the first camp in his career where he is in the driver's seat when it comes ot the starting job, what will that do for Jordan Travis' development during what many be the most important fall camp of Mike Norvell's FSU career? While Jordan Travis is the focal point of the offense, what abut the weapons around him? Is Cam McDonald gone be a focal point of the offense? Will Mycah Pittman and Johnny Wilson be solid options as they come in form Oregon and Arizona State respectively? Then on the defensive side of the ball, do we need to hear more about these young defensive backs led by Omarion Cooper and Kevin Knowles and can Azaryeah Thomas breakthrough into the rotation a true freshman and will this defensive line live up to their elite billing as Fabien Lovett is a man on a mission headed to 2022. Lastly, we wrap up with some hot takes as it is Max's turn to give his opinion. Will he finally commit to the JT13 Heisman campaign that we all expect out of him? Does he have something nice to say about the skill position coaches when it comes to recruiting or production? Defensively, does he see a new name stand out or simply not live up to the billing? As always, we want to thank each and every single one of you for making Locked On Seminoles your first listen each and every single day. The Seminole Sidelines podcast reflects on what coach Mike Norvell as well as Jordan Travis, Jammie Robinson and Fabien Lovett said at the ACC Kickoff media event in Charlotte, N.C. We wrap the show by giving some thoughts on where Jim Phillips missed the mark in his state of the league address.
Hello and welcome to Noles News Now, the latest in Florida State Seminoles sports presented by Tomahawk Nation. I'm your host Perry Kostidakis — let's hop right in. Today's big news came in the form of FSU kicking off ACC Media Days — head coach Mike Norvell as well as quarterback Jordan Travis, defensive tackle Fabien Lovett and safety Jammie Robinson all took the podium to talk expectations for 2022 and more. There wasn't exactly anything World-changing said — media days aren't really known for their substance when it comes to answers — but mainly reaffirmed what we've been hearing from those 4 and others on the team this offseason. Jordan Travis is taking that step forward as a team leader, rather than solely a player, and according to the group, the entire team is gelling, becoming much more comfortable within the system, largely attributed to bringing back plenty of experience. ACC commish Jim Phillips also spoke on Wednesday, hyping up the conference's success in 2021-22, when it captured more national titles than any other conference. He touched on the obvious topics — saying he is for NIL but claiming only Congress can put in meaningful rules, advocating for college football playoff expansion and, of course, conference realignment. He says all options are on the table — from uneven revenue distribution to expansion. He did say that he has full faith in schools not leaving, given the iron clad grant of rights, and again hyped up the ACC, offering a gem of a quote, saying that the conference leads in “all metrics, except finances,” which, you know, is pretty key. He came off as a man well-aware the previous form of college football and athletics as we knew it is in its final breaths, definitely aware of the issues the ACC faces financially. Outside of that, FSU released its media guide and an updated roster — a few weight and number changes, nothing major. You can see our full breakdown on TomahawkNation.Com. That's where you can catch more on these stories, including full transcripts from today's ACC Kickoff events, and other Seminoles sports. Thank you for listening — we'll catch you next time. Good morning... good afternoon... good evening... No matter what time you're listening, yes, you've made it to the Friday edition of Noles News Now. I'm your host, Brian Pellerin who will be guiding you in to the weekend with the latest news and notes from around Florida State football, baseball, and more. The biggest story to look ahead to is the unofficial start of ACC football season next week with the ACC Football Kickoff media days in Charlotte. The Seminoles will be sending veterans Jordan Travis, Fabien Lovett, and Jammie Robinson alongside Mike Norvell on July 20th - that's next Wednesday. The Noles will be just more than a month away from taking the field for the first time at that point and two months from beginning ACC play on a Friday night in Louisville. An announcement from ESPN this week actually slid that kickoff back 30 minutes so kickoff for that game is now at 7:30 pm, in case you've got to adjust your calendar or travel plans. It's been a busy summer on the recruiting trail for the Florida State Seminoles coaching staff as they continue to shape the future of this roster. One of the biggest areas to address is solidifying the trenches and recent offensive line commit Roderick Kearney looks to be the centerpiece of that effort going forward. This week, he joined our Florida State of Recruiting podcast for an interview about FSU, new offensive coordinator Alex Atkins and much more. Check it out to hear from Big Rod, a leader of the Noles for the future. Of course, Atkins was a huge part in landing Kearney and many other commits this offseason. He's been an incredible asset on the recruiting trail for FSU so the question is how does he rank in compared to other Florida State's other top recruiters of the past decade. David Stout tries to tackle that in a column posted to Tomahawk Nation dot com this morning. There have been some great assistants and Atkins is off to a strong start to be among if not the best of the bunch. Link Jarrett is hoping his newest hire will also be a major recruiting ace for the Noles as he's landed his first recruiting coordinator as the head man of FSU. Jarrett announced Thursday that Rich Wallace will make the jump from Notre Dame to Tallahassee with him to join the Noles coaching staff in the recruiting coordinator role. Wallace already has ties to the Sunshine State with his experience at Jacksonville and UCF. One day before FSU football starts their season next month against Duquesne, the athletic department will induct the newest members of the Florida State Hall of Fame class announced this week. In total, 10 Seminole greats will have their names added to the hall including football stars Snoop Minnis and E.G. Green, golf star Brooks Koepka, baseball player of the year James Ramsey, soccer greats Amanda Dacosta and Toni Pressley plus others from tennis, swimming and diving and more. That'll do it for this edition of Noles News Now. If you like what you hear, remember to subscribe, follow and rate the show to help us out and let other Noles fans know about the easiest way to stay up to date on all things FSU 3 times a week. Until Monday, I'm Brian Pellerin. Thanks for listening. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

First up, Drake is steering the ship today as we look towards the Transfer Portal. With Florida State having 81 out of the 85 Scholarships filled with the departures of several players including Jordan Young, Corey Wren, Koby Gross and others, what should FSU being looking for. On Drake's Wish list, how many or on the offensive side of the ball? Should we reload in the Defensive Back room? Do we need more depth in the linebackers? Do we approach the idea of transfer QBs yet again. Next, are there specific targets in mind that Coach Mike Norvell and the Seminoles should target? Can they be a major player for an elite defensive tackle? Can the woo another playmaker to replace/fill in the void left by Winston Wright until he comes back from injury? Can we finally shore up the Offensive line with a high-risk gamble player from the west coast? Lastly, in the spirit of the NFL Draft, Drake gives you the players he sees on this roster who can not only make the jump to the NFL next season but can make the jump by declaring early. We all know that fan-favorites Fabien Lovett and Robert Cooper are headed to Sundays and most likely in the early rounds. Are there young guns who can make that jump early? Will a former 5-star rise to the occasion? Can we have an offensive lineman be drafted for the first time in nearly 5 years? Will FSU's most talked about player take the next step and join a long list of names of linebackers drafted into the pros? Tune in to find out. The defensive line is one that has long been considered a strength for this Florida State Seminole team but was a serious letdown in 2020. Insert three transfers (two from the SEC) and the future looks bright again. Potentially a shift in scheme focus also could play a role in improved play for the front. Defensive line coaches John Papuchis and Odell Haggins have a big task ahead of them if the 2021 defense is going to make a leap. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support
