In Parts 1 and 2, we've been studying verses in the Bible that begin with this phrase, "Do not be deceived..." Why would God give us this warning?I believe it is because there are certain areas in our lives as human beings where we can easily be deceived. Our lives can easily be corrupted by false ideas.Today we'll study the last of the fourth of these verses - Galatians 6:7, "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap." >>Watch on YouTube

Are the ideas that we adhere to true or false?There are four verses in the Bible that begin with this phrase, "do not be deceived." Three of these come from Paul, and one comes from James.They all have to do with developing false ideas. They are saying to make sure you're not being deceived into believing ideas that that are contrary to the teachings of Christ. His teaching is based on truth.Today we'll study three of these verses. Paul spoke this in 1 Corinthians 15:33, "Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”I think he is saying, do not be blind to the fact that we are being influenced every day by people. I recently read that in our country that up until the 1950s, people's lives were primarily shaped by the culture; the culture being the family, the neighborhood, the schools, and the churches. But today, the primary influence in people's lives are movies, television, and social media. In fact, the famous filmmaker, George Lucas says this, "The influence of the church, which used to be all powerful, has been usurped by film." >>Watch on YouTube

Are we aware of the ideas we have about life? Can ideas be dangerous?We live in a culture that gives little thought to our ideas. And whether we are aware of it or not, we all live with a certain set of ideas.Jesus spoke this in Luke 11:33-36,“No one lights a lamp and puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness.So watch out that the light in you is not darkness. Therefore if your whole body is full of light, without any dark part, it will be wholly illuminated, as when the lamp illuminates you with its light." >>Watch on YouTube

What are the covenants that are found in the Bible?Today we're discussing the covenants of both the Old Testament and New Testament. In the Old Testament, there was limited access to God. The priests acted as mediators between God and the people.Because human beings inevitably failed to keep the law perfectly, animal sacrifices were required to atone for sin. And these sacrifices had to be repeated continually, highlighting their temporary and incomplete nature. That is the old covenant.Then go to the New Testament, and we read in Hebrews 8:6, "And now He has obtained a more excellent ministry by as much as He (Jesus) is the mediator of a better covenant which has been enacted on better promises."So basically Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant enacted on better promises. This is the new covenant, which makes the old covenant obsolete. What a blessing Jesus is to us! ⁠>>Watch on YouTube

Are you troubled with guilt? Can doing good things cleanse our hearts and give us the freedom we are searching for?No, the only way we can be forgiven is through the shed blood of Jesus for our sins. Some people hate the idea of the necessity to shed Christ's blood. But if you take out the theology of the cross, then Good Friday and the Easter message is meaningless. Looking in the book of Genesis and moving through the Old and New Testaments, God seems to make it quite clear. The heart of our faith is being forgiven of our sins. That's what gets us into heaven. But the forgiveness of our sins is only possible through the shed blood of Christ.Hebrews 9:14 assures us with this promise,"How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" >>Watch on YouTube

Why is Good Friday good? What are you storing up for the future?In Bruce Wilkerson's book A Life God Rewards - Why Everything You Do Today Matters Forever, he tells of a week-long seminary class he taught on rewards in heaven. Every afternoon after the class, a special group of scholars met and debated every point. One day, a church historian from Romania asked the group,"What do the greats of church history such as Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, and Spurgeon all have in common?" When everyone hesitated, he told the answer. "They all earnestly believed in and hoped for eternal rewards."Wilkerson said that toward the end of the week, he noticed a shift. The room full of scholars were spending less time debating and more time responding personally to the material.One afternoon, an older participant pulled him aside and said, "I thought God brought me here to learn more about eternal rewards, but I was wrong. "He brought me here to change my heart. I'm leaving a changed professor."Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:20,"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal..." ⁠ >>Watch on YouTube

How can we understand the motive of our hearts? What about the motives of others' hearts? The apostle Paul spoke this wisdom in 1 Corinthians 4:5,“Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. How is the best way to respond to the storms of life when they come my way? And how can my response be pleasing to God?When most of us experience painful circumstances our response is, "How can I get this out of my life?" And, if you have something in your life that's causing you pain and suffering and you can get rid of it, then you should.But we're talking about things that we have no control over.I think the problem comes when we are only interested in how this is going to turn out. God is more concerned with how you and I are going to turn out.Jesus spoke these truths to the crowds in Matthew 7:24-27,“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and its collapse was great.” >>Watch on YouTube

What questions do you have about evil? And most importantly, how does God address the problem of suffering and evil?We all will experience some degree of suffering in this lifetime. Some of you have probably already experienced some real suffering, because we're not immune to it.Even as believers, we are not immune to it. But it's important to know that there are no easy pat answers to this question of human suffering.We're not dealing with a problem to be solved. It's really more of a mystery that we need to understand. So this message is all about gaining understanding.The Lord spoke this through Isaiah, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. Do you look to God for guidance? Do you give much thought to His will for your life?If we don't seek God's will and guidance, why not?God invites us to ask for His guidance. However, to really grasp this, I must first ask this question - how does God really regard my life? What role does He desire to play in my life?Acts 17:24-26 tells us, "The God who made the world and everything that is in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made by hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation." >>>Watch on YouTube

How is the will of God working in our lives, even in the midst of deep suffering and pain?In our last episode we talked about living in God's moral will, which has to do with His design for our lives. Today we are discussing God's sovereign will. But if God is in control of everything, do humans really have free will? It's a good question. What is the will of God for our lives and how do we find it?As you think back over your life, how many times do you remember saying the Lord's Prayer? Remember this part - "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done..."I often wonder, even in my own personal life, when we say The Lord's Prayer, are we just repeating it, or do we really mean it? Isaiah 30:18 tells us, "Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore He will rise up to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. How important is truth in our society today?I've been reading Truth Triumphs by Bible teacher John McArthur, and have really gained some new insights into this, which kind of helped open the door to this study.MacArthur believes that all of life is about the truth. In fact, he believes it's the most important reality in the universe. Think about how the issue of truth is so important in all of life. Not only do we have moral, spiritual and theological truth, we also have fixed truth in the physical world that we live in.Most rational people care about the laws of nature and science, and they realize the harm that violating those laws bring into their lives. But some of these same people are willing to split the reality of physical laws with the spiritual moral laws. So we have to ask, how do reasonable people do this?The Lord gave this reply to the Israelites through the prophet Isaiah, "Because you have said, 'We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have made a pact. The overwhelming scourge will not reach us when it passes by, for we have made falsehood our refuge and we have concealed ourselves with deception.'" - Isaiah 28:15And in John 8:31-32, "To the Jews who had believed Jesus, He said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'” >>Watch On YouTube

Can we really love God if we don't know him? We have to set aside time in order to get to know Him, and also to love Him. And at the heart of our faith is learning how to trust God with our hearts and with our lives. If you want to be a healthy, vibrant, dynamic Christian whose life makes a difference, three things have to be taking place in your life:The inner life of devotion. deepening your relationship with God. The intellectual life of rationality—developing your mind and the ability to reason and think. The outer life of service to others.Life moves fast. Bodies age. But your soul can still grow strong, resulting in a vibrant inward life. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:16: “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.”You were made to know God, flourish spiritually, live with purpose, and pass your faith on to others. ​​As this new year unfolds, how will you seek Him daily and let Him renew you from the inside out? >>Watch on YouTube

What final words would you leave to shape the faith and direction of your children for a lifetime?Drawing from David's last instruction to Solomon in 1 Chronicles 28:9, this message emphasizes four enduring priorities to pass on to the next generation:deeply knowing God (not merely acknowledging Him),wholeheartedly serving Him,living with right motives that please God rather than self or others, andactively seeking Him with the promise that He will be found.Through Scripture, illustration, and personal reflection, this study challenges believers to examine their relationship with God, reminding us that spiritual growth and blessing flow from intentional pursuit and obedience—and that we are always only as close to God as we choose to be.So if your life and legacy were distilled into a single message, would it point others toward truly knowing, serving, and seeking God?I Chronicles 28 9: "As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord searches all hearts and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, he will let you find Him. But if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever."

There is a thirst in the soul of every human being that seeks to be satisfied. King David writes in Psalm 42:1-2:"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?"Many people are not looking to God to satisfy their souls. Instead, they are driven and ruled by unsatisfied desires, desperately looking everywhere they can in hopes of finding satisfaction, turning away from the fountain of living water, the only water that can satisfy the thirst of their souls. We then come up with our own strategy for life. So we come up with ways to make our own cisterns, thinking we can fill those cisterns and we'll find satisfaction and a quenching of the thirst of the soul.But what does God tell us? He says that the problem with human cisterns is that they're all broken. They leak. They can't truly quench the thirst of the soul.Today we will discuss three tendencies that seem to creep into a man's life when this happens. As you listen today, think about your own life and how this applies to you.

How can we know God? Is He knowable?Yes He is! Today we're studying Jeremiah --- Many Bible scholars, including Tim Keller, view this as the most famous prophecy of the Bible. Though it was written almost 800 years before Christ was born, the New Testament writer Peter felt this passage was important enough that he wrote it in its entirety in Hebrews.God is knowable—He is not a god who is hidden. He reveals Himself so that He can be known.

Why did Jesus work miracles?These miracles served to show love to hurting people, prove His divine nature, and affirm the authenticity of His teaching. The book of John tells us how Jesus replied to the Samaritan woman's question to him:"Jesus answered and said to her, 'If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.'” - John 4:10 >>Watch on YouTube

Do our words have power?If we are honest with ourselves we would say yes. The book of Proverbs tells us: "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” - Proverbs 18:21James 3:9-10 tells us, "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be."Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit.Now he's talking about us. How can we make a lasting impact? We have been called to be lights in a dark world, ambassadors for Christ and now we're called to be salt.Matthew 5:13 tells us, "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."How can we be salt to the world?The apostle Paul gives us a great recipe for this in Colossians 4:2, 5-6:"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful... Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." >>Watch on YouTube

How do you influence people? What are you trying to influence them to do? Are you trying to influence them for good?Many influencers today are just really trying to entertain you. They're trying to draw a crowd and promote products. And they get paid by the brands that they promote.Influencers can change a person's behavior, their beliefs, their attitudes or outcomes without the use of direct commands. People can be influenced through logical arguments, appealing to reason, emotional appeals, and cooperative efforts.I also think that as believers, your example can influence somebody.In Jerry Foster's book Life Focus, he says Christians tend to walk down one of three paths:the path of indifferencethe path of indulgencethe path of influenceThe path of influence is making a difference in the lives of others. Instead of desiring to be left alone, they're proactive in the lives of other people. They're not as interested in spending their lives on themselves, but in investing in others.So at the end of the day, your life will make a lasting difference. >>Watch on YouTube

Can we understand our own hearts? What about the hearts of others?Today's episode is from Isaiah 30:9-11"For these are rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the Lord's instruction. They say to the seers, 'See no more visions!' And to the prophets, 'Give us no more visions of what is right!Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions. Leave this way, get off this path, and stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!'" Several years ago, I was in conversation with a man working in politics in Washington D.C. He was very cynical, and made this observation:"Great statesmen today rarely get elected. Great statesmen tell the truth. The problem is that the electorate don't want to hear the hard truth. They only want to hear what is pleasant..."The same can be said of us. Many times we are not interested in what God has to say—not interested in what is right, and what is true, and what is good. We are like the children of Israel telling the prophets, "We want you to tell us what we want to hear." But what will lead to our ultimate well-being? What is the only thing that can truly satisfy the deep longings of our heart? >>Watch on YouTube

"I sure I sure hope I'm getting into heaven. I'm working hard at it." Have you felt this way or heard others say this?I see this with men all the time. There's this hint of uncertainty. Whenever you hear someone saying, "I'm really working at it. I'm trying hard. I hope I get there."—what does it tell you about that person's perspective on salvation? To me, it indicates in his mind that something is lacking in his life, that he's somehow falling short.Do you believe that your works, or lack of good works, could possibly keep you out of heaven? Many people, even in the church, just naturally believe that good works get them into heaven.Now, I contend if you don't get this right, you can spend the rest of your life, particularly the last years of your life, terrified by what the future holds. Terrified about eternity.The Bible teaches that salvation is by grace through faith in Christ. This truth gives you assurance and not uncertainty. Today we're looking at how to understand God's grace.

Are you looking for wisdom with your finances?Today's Bible study opens with Luke 3:1-14, where John the Baptist is calling people to repentance and changed hearts. Several groups of people ask John what they should do—first the crowds, then the tax collectors, and then the soldiers.John answered in Luke 3:8, "Produce fruit in keeping with repentance..." then he addresses each group with a specific way to produce that fruit.It is interesting to note that each of John's answers to have to do with money and possessions. What does it mean to have God's favor?There's an important phrase in the Bible that I'd like to look at today - the phrase is God's favor. I'm not sure that we think about this much or even understand what it is.Psalm 90:17 tells us, "Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and do confirm for us the work of our hands., yes, confirm for us the work of our hands." The ESV version of this verse says "establish the work of our hands."This Psalm was written by Moses (the only psalm in the Bible written by him), and is a prayer, asking the Lord to bring His favor and blessing over the Israelites' life and work.How should we seek God's favor as well? >>Watch on YouTube

What comes to mind when you hear the word confrontation?I believe confrontation is one of the most important practices of life. It's what the apostle Paul did. What we're talking about is a willingness to confront the truth.We are called to confront the truth as it relates to problems that we face in our lives. In Scott Peck's book The Road Less Travelled, he writes:​​"What makes life difficult is that the process of confronting and solving problems is a painful one. Yet it is in this whole process of meeting and solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the cutting edge that distinguishes between success and failure.Hardship is a part of the human condition. But if you're going to be a healthy man with healthy relationships in a healthy business life, you've got to be willing to be confrontational.

How are we to live in today's secular culture? In the book of Acts, what was Paul's approach to the pagan people of Greece?Most of the people of Athens were well educated, but they were also pagan, and worshipped many Greek gods.Paul's approach to his sermon to the people of Athens was very consistent with what he taught about going out into the world and dealing with a secular pagan culture—how to deal with those outside of the faith.Paul did not argue or try to convince people. He reasoned with them, starting with what they already knew. Acts 17:16-20 "While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.”They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.”

Do only good people go to heaven? No. Good people don't go to heaven—forgiven people go to heaven.Think about these attributes of God: He's loving, He's merciful, He's holy, He's full of grace. He's all powerful. He's just, He's fair. And that's called the theology of glory. And it's all true of God, and it makes people feel good about Him. But think about these other biblical words: sin, wrath, the cross, crucifixion, the blood of Christ, sacrifice, repentance, those words are called the theology of the cross. I think a lot of people find it offensive.In fact, there are a number of liberal theologians who really hate the idea of Christ's blood paying for our sins. They call it slaughterhouse religion. But if you take the cross, the crucifixion and the blood out of Christianity, it is meaningless because everything in the New Testament revolves around the forgiveness of our sins. There are no good people. We're all sinners. But this is what's so interesting. God has made it clear that the forgiveness of our sins is only possible through the shed blood of an acceptable substitute.Think about that for a minute. Without that substitute who bears the sin, we bear it. We bear it ourselves. And so today, I really want to consider the shed blood of Christ.A great place to start is 1 Corinthians 1:18, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. But to us who are being saved is the power of God."

The father of the prodigal son gave a hugh banquet to celebrate his son's return home. His son was lost, but now was found. Does this remind you of what awaits believers in heaven?In Revelation 19:6-9, John describes the Lord's future banquet in heaven for those who have trusted in Christ:"Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:'Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.'(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God's holy people.)Then the angel said to me, 'Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!' Have you ever thought about the prodigal son's older brother? From Luke 15:25-28a:“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,' he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' The older brother became angry and refused to go in..."In Rembrandt's famous painting of the Prodigal Son, you see there's a darkness to the older brother as he looks down, watching their father embracing the wayward younger son who has returned home. The older brother is angry and jealous.Luke 15:28b-32 continues:"...So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!'“‘My son,' the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. How does a person become "lost?"Many times it's because they have run out of relationships—they've burned through all their relationships, for all kinds of reasons.In the parable of the Prodigal Son, that's what this young son has done. He didn't have anybody to go to. He's in this distant land. He's run out of money, food and resources. He has no friends.Why do you think he didn't immediately go back to his father? What does true freedom look like in our lives?The parable of the prodigal son is what I consider one of the most significant of all of Jesus' parables, taken from Luke 15:11-32. Where does true belief begin? True belief is an issue of the heart, not the head. Many people believe that a God of love cannot also be a God of wrath. Think about that. But author and pastor Tim Keller says there is no love without wrath.
