One of the things we can't buy is our reputation. We always try to present the best version of ourselves, but so often we end up humbled. From realizing we were wrong to messing up publically, we try to avoid it and always try to uphold our reputation. But God often works in different ways. This Halloween we're celebrating FALLoween, as we hit the north and take on the Mighty Fall! Other than a few singles that barely scraped the UK top 40, the Fall never achieved commercial success, but they built a large cult following due in large part to the personality and antics of their difficult, irascible, intelligent, and borderline unintelligible bandleader, Mark E. Smith. But what we hope to emphasize in this episode is that despite Smith's outsized influence over the Fall, and his tendency to fire members on a whim, the Fall was always a band. Smith's ideas formed the bedrock of their songs, but their music was always the product of a back-and-forth between him and incredibly talented musicians who added their own distinctive stamp to every iteration of the Fall. Their discography can be large and intimidating to new listeners, so we've chosen their 1985 opus This Nation's Saving Grace, which is relatively accessible, but also a legit candidate for their greatest album. So even if you don't come away from this episode as the Fall's 50,001st fan, we hope you'll at least understand why anyone would willingly listen to this band.Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, Mike DeFabio, Dan WatkinsComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/105-the-fall-this-nations-saving-grace-1985Support the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

We're back talking a bit more about Emotional Intelligence and what agents today can expect from a cooling market and how that can affect our professional outlook. It's no secret that the market we've been seeing has been bananas and even if it moves back to a more normal equilibrium that has more basis in history, it's going to seem like a huge slowdown to most agents who don't know any different. That's not a bad thing! It's just that success isn't going to be the low hanging fruit that it's been for the past few years, and it's going to take a bit more work to get there. But what we want to stress and what we here at OTB still believe with our whole hearts, opportunity is still there, and Real Estate is still the best way to build wealth and create legacy. You just have to put the work in.   In a cooling market like this, knowing who you are and what is happening around you will be key. It's about getting the best information you can to keep yourself well informed and being ready to implement those outside the box ideas when those opportunities present themselves. We have a list of our all-time favorite books, but like we say in the episode, don't just make them a goal to get through, but really internalize the information that they have. It's about being as well informed as you can be to be the best you can be for yourself and your clients that can bring you the success you're looking for.   Steve's and Bernie's Book List (In order of mentions): The Road Less Stupid by Keith J. How do great companies fall? Can we detect a potential decline earlier and avoid it? How far can a company fall before the path towards doom becomes inevitable? Is this something reversible? How the Mighty Fall offers responses to these questions, which offer leaders a well-founded hope that they can learn to prevent decline or alter their course. The author Jim Collins conducted a research project on this topic for four years and discovered the ultimate 5 step-wise stages of decline—in hope of providing a guidance to leaders on reducing their risks of falling all the way to the bottom. As long as we never get entirely knocked out of the game, hope always remains. The mighty can fall, but they can often rise again. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this last episode of Season 2 BOSS-it podcast, Mark Edwards has a warm and engaging conversation with Sean Si, CEO & Founder of SEO Hacker.Early BeginningsSean Si introduces himself as a born-again Christian from the Philippines. He runs a 50 people digital marketing agency, one of the most-trusted and leading SEO companies in the Philippines. He founded SEO Hacker at just 21 years old with only about (1300 pesos) $65 capital and it's now grown, through grit, prayer, mentorship, book reading and podcast listening (including BOSS-it), to a $1 million company. From Failure to SuccessSean's route to setting up a business was anything but traditional. Having, in his words, "failed" at college, Sean was nonetheless able to land a job with HP.He stayed at HP only 5 short months because his 'side hustle' - SEO Hacker - was already earning him 8-10 times what his day job paid and, as Sean puts it, he "had to resign and jump on this opportunity before the train left."Evolution of Growing a Business‘Mom and pop' startups often remain as ‘mom and pop startups' for years, because change is difficult; it takes you out of your comfort zone and it also requires money. Many changes are required along the way, to ensure your company makes it through the first 5 years and beyond.SEO Hacker had no backers and has grown organically, meaning that, as founder, Sean has had to wear many hats along the way - even assuming all janitorial duties in his first office because he couldn't afford to hire people to do it. Humility - You have to have a lot of humility as a CEO. In his book, "How the Mighty Fall”, Jim Collins (link below) explains how hubris & ego are the main reasons companies fail. You have to make sacrifices in order to succeed and be humble enough to do whatever it takes.Sean believes everything has “Divine Appointment” - You have a purpose, desire and reason for living. You have a burning “Why” in your heart. To find out what it is, you have to have faith.A jovial, friendly character, Sean's closing observation gives great insight into his positive attitude to life's ups and downs and where they may lead - "Almost getting kicked out of college, quitting my job - How lucky can a guy be..?!"Great to meet you, Sean Si!Links:https://sean.si/ https://podcasts.apple.com/ph/podcast/the-leadership-stack-podcast/id1470219705 https://www.linkedin.com/in/seansi/https://www.linkedin.com/in/seansi/?originalSubdomain=phhttps://www.instagram.com/sean.si/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/seansi.speakshttps://seo-hacker.com/Jim Collins' book - How the Mighty Fall

The author of this book is probably no stranger to you – James Collins is the renowned author of business bestsellers Built to Last and Good to Great, the first focused on how to build a superior company, the second on ‘phoenixes', ordinary companies that become great. In How the Mighty Fall, he explores instead the stories of once superior companies that become mediocre or even fail altogether. How were such mighty beasts brought to their knees? Collins started to become interested in the topic of this book, “how do the mighty fall?”. The question of "how do the mighty fall" became more urgent and important than ever, so Collins further prioritized the writing of his book on the topic. He and his team spent several years carefully selecting eleven companies to study and, using a research-grounded perspective of how decline can happen, came up with a ‘roadmap to decline'. This roadmap is divided into five stages, defined by him as: hubris born of success, undisciplined pursuit of more, denial of risk and peril, grasping for salvation, and capitulation to irrelevance or death. Companies can refer to the structure introduced in the book to better identify the current state of their business and hopefully get out of trouble, returning to the right path that once made them outstanding and brilliant.

Start-up CEO Mitch Santala talks to Elizabeth Dixon, the Principle Lead of Strategy, Hospitality, and Service Design at Chick-fil-A about her entrepreneurial background and the leadership principles that guide both her career and her personal life. Gil Moegerle starts Season Two off with a recap of Season One, where financial executive Brett explained the power of “No,” followed by PR practitioner, Jamie, reminding us that, “If your company sucks, PR is not your problem.” We're also reminded of Kimberly Thompson who loudly proclaimed her desire to bathe in the white queso dip of her very favorite boujie Mexican food restaurant. Mitch Santala then introduced the audience to entrepreneur and leader, Elizabeth Dixon, diving right into asking her how she defines an entrepreneur. Elizabeth's thoughtful answer includes a quote from Henry David Thoreau and the importance of working toward something bigger than yourself. She makes a point to mention that we should always add value to others. Mitch follows up by asking Elizabeth about the first time she realized she was an entrepreneur and Elizabeth gives a great story from her freshman year in college. Billy Blanks' Tae Bo, some hazardous conditions, and a non-existent wrestling team are all that it took to get her first small business off the ground. Mitch expands on Elizabeth's experience by commenting on how she took the initiative to get the project started. She had an idea, she solved the problem…then she asked for help. Elizabeth continues the conversation about taking one step at a time, citing the story of how Netflix was born from a bad experience with late fees. The topic shifts to branding when Mitch asks Elizabeth about raising kids to create their own brand. Elizabeth quips that kids are sponges and that we shouldn't be afraid to talk about entrepreneurial concepts with them while they are young. She says that being your own brand is your authenticity and talks about paycheck vs purpose. Mitch also brings up best practices in innovation and customer loyalty and Elizabeth proudly notes that innovation is decentralized at Chick-Fil-A. She explains that customer expectations are always evolving and likens the lack of innovation in business to the Sports Illustrated effect for athletes. Mitch agrees that hubris should not get in the way, because that's where innovation dies. The two discuss the difference between side hustles and side hassles and the struggle that comes with being an entrepreneur – they're always building or creating something. If you don't give them something to do…watch out. Mitch and Elizabeth also agree on maintaining the health of your priorities before you start down an additional path. Anyone who loves Chick-Fil-A, will get a kick out of the “My Pleasure” origin story that Elizabeth shares and, taking inspiration from Kanye West, Elizabeth describes the restaurant's Number One with a lemonade and the unique, chaste relationship the pickles have. Finally, Mitch asks our signature question: Where are we going for Mexican food and what are we having. Elizabeth doesn't hesitate to answer Taqueria del Sol, local Atlanta chain. They have a simple menu of six types of tacos, enchiladas, and sides and Elizabeth orders the pulled pork Carnitas. Mitch says he'll try one of those, too, with an additional carne asada for the heck of it. In true Chick-fil-A form, Mitch thanks Elizabeth for being on the show and she responds with, “My pleasure.” Links: Chick-Fil-A https://www.chick-fil-a.com/ The Infinite Game by Simon Cynic https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079DWSYYB/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 How the Mighty Fall by Jim Collins https://www.amazon.com/How-Mighty-Fall-Companies-Never-ebook/dp/B0058DRTYY/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=how+the+mighty+fall&qid=1614785306&s=digital-text&sr=1-1 Taqueria del Sol http://www.taqueriadelsol.com/ Subscribe to our podcast on Apple, Spotify, Google, and Stitcher.
