On Midwest Week, a rough season for the River Bandits, but a successful tryout for a pitch clock.
Typically with this podcast, we focus on leaders and great mentors in Kansas City, or formerly of this community. Well, this week we're going outside of the area, but it's someone with ties here. Of sorts. This week we're joined by Dave Heller, the owner of the Royals' high-A affiliate, the Quad Cities River Bandits. He and his group, Main Street Baseball, have owned multiple minor-league teams. So we'll talk a little baseball.Dave also happens to be one of the top political media consultants and campaign strategists in the Democratic Party. As president of Main Street Communications, an award-winning political media firm, Dave has compiled the best won-loss record in the Democratic Party helping 30 clients win election to Congress. He has helped elect and re-elect more African-Americans to Congress than any other media consultant, including current and former U.S. Reps. Jesse Jackson, Jr., the late John Lewis, and Maxine Waters. Now, outside of talking about some of his clients, as any self-respecting C-10 fan knows, we don't talk politics on this podcast. This week is no exception. The readers of USA Today and 10Best.com voted the Bandits' ballpark, Modern Woodmen Park, “Best Minor League Ballpark in America.” The Bandits have won Ballpark Digest's “Best Ballpark Improvement Award” five times. The Bandits also won Ballpark Digest's “Commitment to Charity” award four times since 2015 (no other team has even won twice). In 2016, his organization, Main Street Baseball, was named Ballpark Digest's Minor League Baseball Organization of the Year, one of the industry's most prestigious awards.LINKS:For more information about the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program for high school students, visit our website. For information on the inaugural C YOU AT TOPGOLF fundraiser for C-10 on September 8, please go to the event page.To see some of Dave Heller's work, visit this page on the Main Street Communications' website. To make a financial gift to give students life-changing one-on-one mentoring, visit our secure donation page. For all episodes of the C-10 podcast and ways you can listen, click here.If you'd like to make a comment, have a suggestion for a future guest, or your company would like to help underwrite this podcast, please visit our contact page.https://CYouInTheMajorLeagues.org/Topgolf

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, April 23, and Sunday, April 24. Enjoy the warm and sunny weather on Saturday because the rain is returning Saturday night, and the weather will return to cooler temperatures much of next week. According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly sunny in the Cedar Rapids area Saturday with a high near 78 degrees. It will also be breezy, with a wind of to 25 mph gusting as high as 40 mph. Saturday night there will be showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a 90 percent chance of precipitation. The low temperature will be around 53 degrees. Rain will be possible again through Sunday morning. It should clear eventually, though, revealing sunny skies with a high near 63 degrees. On Sunday night it will be partly cloudy, with a low around 38 degrees. The high temperature will drop down to 50 degrees on Monday and the high temperatures will hover there for much of the week. According to a report from the Iowa Capitol Dispatch, Iowa is leading the nation so far this year in puppy mills that were sanctioned by the federal government. A national animal welfare group determined the ranking after a review of detailed inspection reports filed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the first quarter of 2022. The review indicates that so far in 2022, 19 of Iowa's breeders and brokers of dogs and cats have been cited for violations — more than any other state in the nation. Missouri places second, with 16, and Wisconsin places third with 13. Violations included improper sanitation and housing for the animals, improper treatment of injured or sick animals, and housing too many animals in one space. Henry Dinkins, accused of killing 10-year-old Breasia Terrell, will have his trial in Linn County. Dinkins, 49, of Davenport, is accused of kidnapping Breasia on the morning of July 10, 2020, and shooting her, causing her death. Breasia was the half sister of Dinkins' son, and investigators have said both children were staying the night with him at the apartment where he was living with a girlfriend. Her remains were found March 22, 2021, by two fishermen in a Clinton County pond. She had been missing for 9 months. The trial is scheduled for Oct. 17. Dave Heller, owner of two MiLB teams and a newly independent Pioneer League squad, joins Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard to discuss his approach to fun at the ballpark and MiLB’s makeover in this week’s Ballpark Digest Broadcaster Chat.Heller’s first splash in Minor League Baseball came as owner of the Quad Cities River Bandits in the Class A Midwest League, where he implemented annual ballpark upgrades on the fan side, including a scenic Ferris wheel in center field, fan-friendly additions to the Modern Woodmen Ballpark upper level, and other amusements in the 360-degree concourse. The guiding philosophy behind all the moves: to create and enhance the sense of community at the historic venue, which reflects in the current support for the River Bandits. A portion of the proceeds from the amusements go to a local medical foundation providing free flu shots for every child in the Quad Cities. On the flip side, Heller discusses the challenges operating MiLB teams in the last year, whether it’s sitting out the 2020 season due to COVID-19 and losing teams in the MLB reorganization of the sport. Quad Cities and the Wilmington Blue Rocks made the cut to the new 120 (only after Iowa elected officials lobbied to keep Quad Cities in the mix, however), but the Billings Mustangs and the rest of the Pioneer League did not. Instead, the Pioneer League will play this season as an MLB Partner League—the new term for what were formerly independent leagues—and break new ground in the west. All the Pioneer League teams will be operating in 2021 or 2022, joined by the Boise Hawks. While the Pioneer League has been making headlines due to 2021 rule changes, operations will be a challenge due to new, increased payroll, as Heller explains. But with a strong set of owners, Heller likes the chances of the Pioneer League thriving in the future.Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is the Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and the author of The Baseball Thesaurusand The Football Thesaurus from August Publications. Kevin Reichard is publisher at August Publications and Ballpark Digest.
