Forget local derbies. Forget even the 'Derby of England'. Arguably the most compelling story of rivalry, bitterness and drama in the modern era of English football has been that between Manchester United and Arsenal. It would reach its peak in the Wenger era but Rob Smyth takes us back to the season of five games that sparked it all off... In this episode, Jerry and Stably dive into Kaiser: The Greatest Footballer Never to Play Football by Rob Smyth, a fascinating exploration of the life and myth of Carlos Kaiser. Known for his extraordinary ability to avoid playing professional football while maintaining a high-profile “career,” Kaiser's story blends deception, charisma, and ingenuity. The hosts discuss how Kaiser leveraged charm, fake injuries, and carefully orchestrated media coverage to sustain his reputation in the elite world of football without ever stepping on the pitch.Jerry and Stably analyze the cultural and systemic factors that allowed Kaiser to thrive in 1980s and 1990s football, highlighting how charisma and myth-making can sometimes outweigh skill and merit. They share amusing and thought-provoking anecdotes from the book, such as Kaiser's elaborate schemes to evade matches, and explore broader themes of ambition, imposture, and the human fascination with larger-than-life figures. The episode examines the ethical and societal implications of Kaiser's actions, questioning whether his story is one of clever survival or manipulative fraud. With their trademark mix of humor and insightful critique, Jerry and Stably offer listeners a compelling look at a figure who turned football's conventions on their head and became a legend for all the wrong—or perhaps right—reasons.
Matt Davies is joined by Newcastle United fan Rob Smyth to give the opposition view this week ahead of the Reds facing Newcastle in the Premier League at the City Ground on Sunday.
The Crystal Palace side that was promoted to the First Division in 1979 under Terry Venables had so much youthful promise that some considered the coming decade to be theirs to grab. They could be, it was reported, the team of the 1980s. What went wrong is the subject of this week's episode as Martyn sits down the with American author Stephen Brandt to chat about his new book 'The Team That Could Have Been' and then Rob Smyth discusses the wider impact of projecting hope and expectation onto young teams. Stephen's book can be found here https://www.amazon.co.uk/Team-that-Could-Have-Been/dp/1801506639 If you want to support the podcast or want your episodes without ads and a couple of days earlier then head over to patreon.com/NessunDormaPodcast where you can subscribe for as little as $3.99 a month. Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga has been linked with a move to Newcastle United by multiple media outlets as part of deals to help tackle PSR issues for Eddie Howe's team. Newcastle have to sell by tomorrow (June 30) to avoid a Premier League points deduction. Forest too have to sell but are looking to move Orel Mangala and Moussa Niakhate to Lyon to solve their issues, meaning they can keep highly rated winger Elanga. If Newcastle do buy Elanga then it seems Forest would purchase one of Yankuba Minteh, Eliot Anderson or perhaps both. Reds fans do not seem keen on a scenario where Elanga goes, so we sat down with Newcastle fan Rob Smyth to get some insight on Minteh and Anderson to see what they offer #NFFC. #nufc Do like and subscribe to our channel. Welcome to the first in a new podcast series for The Gentleman Ultra. TGU will review, inspect and analyse some of the greatest games in Serie A history, and we felt there was no better game to start than this all-time classic between Inter and Sampdoria from May 1991. Sampdoria were on the verge of winning an historic first Scudetto, but had to travel to Giovanni Trapattoni's Inter side with four games remaining. Inter, who were second going into the game, knew a loss what mean the end of their own title aspirations. What transpired over the course of the next 90 minutes is one of the greatest matches of the last 30 years, in any league. Richard Hall and Emmet Gates are joined by special guest Rob Smyth of The Guardian. Rob helps break down the game, and explains why indeed the match stands out as one of the best in Italian football history.

Pringle was also one of the many players used by England during the chaotic 1988 series against the West Indies, with Mike Gatting, John Emburey, Chris Cowdrey and Graham Gooch all leading the hosts against Viv Richards, Malcolm Marshall and co in the ‘summer of four captains’. Peter Hayter, Emma John and Rob Smyth join Gary Naylor to discuss how Mike Atherton’s inexperienced England tourists fared against Brian Lara and the West Indies in early 1994. There are tales of Miller’s bar, blotto copy and teenage trauma, along with colourful memories of Curtly Ambrose and 46 all out, an unlikely victory in Barbados and Lara’s world record test score. And will the panel reach any consensus over the enigma that is Graeme Hick? They attempt to weigh his extraordinary talent and considerable achievements against the times when his England performances didn’t meet people’s huge expectations. Both Robin and Derek were part of England’s 1992 World Cup campaign and there’s a fascinating, in-depth chat about that memorable tournament as well, when Imran Khan’s Pakistan beat England in the final.
