Nessun Dorma 80s & 90s Football Podcast

After every football season deep dive we will take a short break into the wider world of sport and in 1981 there really was only one story for us to pick up. That summer's Ashes series has forever been synonymous with one man: Ian Terence Botham. His heroics with bat and ball transformed the prospect of another miserable summer into a famous win. How simple a story was it in reality? Do we laud the main character at the expense of the rest of the cast? And do we do that in history as a whole? To reflect on this legendary tale, Martyn is joined by Rob and Gary as they look at the loss of the England captaincy, the miracle of Headingley and the other actors who shared the stage. Before that, The Rest Is History's Dominic Sandbrook discusses the cultural importance of Botham in Britain at the time and the acute need we have for heroes in storytelling. Today's chat with Lord Ian Botham is one that made Gus' heart sing! It's not often we get to speak with a 'Lord' and Ian's got a few stories to tell! Ian speaks about being a really sporty kid, choosing between cricket and football & the sacrifice of becoming a professional athlete as a teen; not that he minded when there were Maseratis to look forward to!Ian shared some hilarious stories from his early days of being a cricketer and how much things have changed in modern sport. He speaks about the platform that cricket enabled him to have & launch his charity that has raised upwards of £65 million. Ian has done so many walks to raise money that he's practically made of spare parts now.  Ian is a family man and from everything that he's achieved and contributed, it's his family that he says is his biggest achievements; a big call for someone who has met the Queen and Nelson Mandela! We speak about the process of him being knighted and the honour that it carries. Botham, Richards, Garner, Trescothik, Caddick, Gimlett, White, Bess, Leach, Rogers, Close, Gayle, Azam. Just a few names that have graced the County Ground in Taunton and home of Somerset.  They have a beautiful ground in the South West of England and a reputation since 1875 for playing a dashing and exciting brand of cricket. Certainly, well before anyone would have used the phrase ‘brand of cricket'. Their fan base is passionate, loyal and care deeply for their beloved county. Listen here as Gordon Hollins, Somerset CEO, tells @tonybishop1 how they have navigated through the pandemic and have a long-term plan for success and growth, starting with filling that one large gap in their trophy cabinet at the earliest possible opportunity. Taunton may not a ‘Test Match Ground' but it does stage international cricket. It also represents a broad area of this country's cricket community and Gordon is looking to expand that further ensuring the future health of the club and its community.

In September 2018, Botham Jean, an unarmed black man, was killed inside his own apartment by Amber Guyger- an off-duty police officer who mistakenly entered his apartment thinking it was her own. After a frantic 911 call, an investigation into the incident ensues and this high profile case added fuel to the national conversation about police brutality against black people in America. How does an off-duty officer resort to her gun so quickly? Did Amber's pre-existing racial biases lead to this fateful decision? Why did some media outlets find it necessary to slander Botham Jean's name after his death? And how can one of Botham's family members find the strength within them to forgive the killer? All this and more are discussed as we take on a frustratingly outrageous and completely unforgettable homicide.UPDATE: ** Since the recording of this episode, Amber Guyger's second appeal has been denied and the court has upheld her conviction.**FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comEPISODE RESOURCES:Timeline of Events:https://abcnews.go.com/US/death-innocent-man-timeline-wrong-apartment-murder-trial/story?id=65938727Guyger Found Guilty:https://www.cbsnews.com/news/amber-guyger-verdict-guilty-verdict-delivered-in-ex-dallas-police-officer-trial-today-live-updates-2019-10-01/Amber Guyger's Sentencing:https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/02/us/amber-guyger-trial-sentencing/index.html"Bo's Law":https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/three-year-anniversary-botham-jeans-death-legacy-bo-law-dallas-officer-shooting/287-f7089c96-9d96-4423-858f-4089c9abac61Botham's Family's Lawsuit:https://www.dallasobserver.com/news/botham-jean-family-moves-forward-with-lawsuit-against-dallas-11970691Texas Murder Laws:https://www.nealdavislaw.com/criminal-defense-guides/types-homicide-charges-texas.htmlDr. Todd Grande's Analysis of the Case:https://youtu.be/Lyy5EZt35XwAmber's Text Message Exchanges:https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/10/02/us/amber-guyger-trial-offensive-texts-trnd/index.htmlAmber's Appeal:https://www.dallasnews.com/news/courts/2021/11/18/dallas-appeals-court-again-upholds-amber-guygers-conviction-for-the-murder-of-botham-jean/

Is there anything in sport to compare with the sustained excitement of a cricket match, especially a Test match, in which the advantage continually fluctuates one way and then the other, and when the match enters its last few minutes, all four results are still possible? After entertaining countless radio listeners around the world for decades, who better to convey the breathless drama of a Test match cliff-hanger than Henry Blofeld? Now, in Ten to Win...and the Last Man In, he has personally selected 30 matches featuring unforgettable finishes and brought them vividly to life again in his own inimitable way. Ranging from the match-winning bowling of F. R. Spofforth against W. G. Grace's England in 1882, via the first tied Test between Benaud's Australia and Worrell's West Indies in 1960, to the never-say-die batting of Ben Stokes in 2019, he picks out the key events and performances of each memorable match and describes them as only he can. Alongside the big-hitting heroics of Jessop in 1902 and Botham in 1981, he revisits less celebrated matches such as South Africa's hard-fought first Test win in 1906, as well as a crucial innings from Denis Compton in 1948 and a match-saving performance by a young Alan Knott in Guyana in 1968 - one of the most exciting matches he has ever witnessed first-hand. Filled with colourful detail and informed by insight gained from a lifetime immersed in the sport he loves, Henry Blofeld's latest audiobook will leave the listener in no doubt - as he himself puts it - about 'what an absurdly irresistible game cricket can be'.

(25:50), and much more. They also compare racism to bigotry. Got a topic you want us to cover? Slide in the DMs and let us know! He publicly forgave Amanda and said that she didn't want her to go to jail.
