It's an age-old question: can women have both brains and beauty? (Spoiler: obviously yes!) Broadcaster Carol Vorderman says the more people comment on her body... the more thigh high boots and tight skirts she'll wear!In this chat with Fearne, Carol charts her early life, from her family running away with the circus, to living out of a car, to being one of the first girls to read engineering at Cambridge University. She also reveals who wrote her first application to Countdown back in the day... because it wasn't her!Carol is very politically active, and explains why everything about our lives is political. Care about the pressure put on kids and parents by schools? Where your taxes go? Women's bodily autonomy? It's more important than ever, she says, to both use your vote, and live with hope. What can we learn from Carol about making the best of what we've been given? And why do we all have a responsibility to stand up for what we believe in?You can watch Carol on Celebrity Quizzing on Channel 5.If you liked this episode of Happy Place, you might also like:Ashley JamesPoorna BellKate Winslet Hosted on Acast. Carol McGiffin joins Heretics for a brutally honest, no-holds-barred conversation about why she really left Loose Women and what was happening behind the scenes at one of daytime TV's biggest shows. From explosive rows in the dressing room to being repeatedly censored by ITV, Carol explains how the atmosphere shifted as the show – and the wider industry – became more rigid, risk-averse and, in her words, “woke”. Carol opens up about being “forced out”, the pressure to conform on issues like trans debates and women's sport, and why she believes presenters are now expected to say one thing on TV while thinking another in private. Beyond Loose Women, we get into her clashes with Carol Vorderman over the moon landings and climate change, what she really thinks about Piers Morgan, memories from Celebrity Big Brother, Rylan and immigration, modern feminism, Kate Garraway's situation with Derek, and why she believes TV has lost its sense of humour and honesty. If you've ever suspected that mainstream TV is more scripted, controlled and performative than it looks – this episode will confirm your suspicions.
Today's show is three quarters Isle of Wight, as we welcome Matt Hitt and Laura Reid, aka The Ventnor Darlings, who also happen to be BFFs with our very own Hannah George! As is always the way when you introduce a bestie to a new group, you make them tell the story that always has you in stitches, so Hannah gets Matt to do just that, and you won't be disappointed, it involves a lightning strike AND TV legend Carol Vorderman ... I KNOW!We then hear about the time our guests were all at sea with the local council and how being named and shamed backfired big time for the authorities, before the crew delve into a case very fitting for the current 'spooky season'. Finally, this week's listener crime is enough to put Taylor and Laura off their grub!See Taylor and Hannah LIVE in Autumn / Winter '25...Thurs 16th October: Museum of Comedy London Sat 15th November: Watford Palace Theatre Mon 15th December: Komedia, Brighton Don't forget DWSC now drops TWICE weekly! And he's forgotten his sandwiches. This Liam Neeson Special features five of our most beloved (and ridiculous) parody interviews from the past three years — plus two raunchy sketches involving a sultry American MILF named Vagella Rick-Rocks, who may or may not be trying to seduce Liam in increasingly absurd scenarios.Along the way, Liam overshares about romance, attempts to rebrand himself as a serious creative artist, and pitches original ideas such as:A romantic comedy glove-based ensemble film (Glove Actually)A mob drama about therapy (The Carusos)A masked vigilante with Wilfred the butler and Boy Wonder, Robbie. (That Man)While giving us first-hand insight into his bizarre world of:Showing old ladies his 'Hamlet'African prostitutesLaughing at elephantsPeeing in men's handsHis short-lived career as SantaDoggingEach sketch is followed by commentary from Jorma and Ray, who try (and mostly fail) to make sense of Liam's creative process, real-life zoo visits and late night video games with celebrity friends like Carol Vorderman, Bill Nighy and Gerry Adams - and suspiciously familiar plotlines. It's part tribute, part chaos, part forgotten sandwiches – with extra lashings of filth. Carol Vorderman is best known as the queen of Countdown, but there's far more to her than just numbers. From growing up in a single-parent household to becoming one of the most recognisable women in British television, her journey has been anything but ordinary. In this episode of Full Disclosure, James O'Brien explores Carol's path from excelling in mathematics to navigating the world of television, her deep passion for education, and her outspoken activism in politics. With strong views on social justice and a fearless approach to calling out inequality, she shares how she found her voice.Unfiltered, passionate, and refreshingly honest, Carol opens up about the power of speaking out and the causes closest to her heart.
#555 Welsh Freddie Mercury - Richard has found out the true lyrics of a 1990s pop classic and is going to tell you them in detail. His guests are internet satirists Larry and Paul. They talk about which one is which, the long genesis of their online sketch content, the BBC's reluctance to promote podcasts in 2008 or understand why radio shows needed video, why a Labour government (especially this one) does not mean the end of political satire, impressing Jeremy Vine and potentially insulting Matt Lucas and David Walliams, how Self Esteem being on a delayed train almost led to an embarrassing situation with Carol Vorderman, whether TV is a worthwhile ambition for people making their own content, is it a good idea to have children and Paul (or is it Larry) has come in with some of his own emergency questions, one of which is a little spicy.Support our Kickstarter here https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/467836598/can-i-have-my-ball-backFor Richard's remaining live stand up gigs http://richardherring.com/ballback/tourCome and see RHLSTP live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpFor Larry and Paul's videos https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSrVr5o27krtcuNgjR5RgdwSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Another jungle bestie is on the chaise lounge, spilling all the I'm A Celeb secrets – from smuggled contraband to texts with his dream girl Carol Vorderman! Plus, Melvin spills the tea on working with Dick and Dom, taking dates along for the ride and working at Radio 1!
Melvin Odoom has pledged his love to Carol Vorderman from the Australian rainforest so Jemma and Marina leap at the chance to kick off the episode with something sweet. The sweet quickly turns sour though when the Trawl ladies check in to see who Trump has appointed Education Secretary. Hold onto your hats, he might just have excelled himself. Then, it's time for Marina and Jemma to pay tribute to the late, great, John Prescott and the clip they've chosen for you provokes a lot of thought from Jemma. In fact she woke up thinking about why the clip resonated so much. Then, have you ever embellished the truth on your CV? This is what Rachel Reeves has been accused of doing by the opposition, only it's hard to find evidence she wasn't an economist at The Bank of England which is what they're suggesting. In fact, at The Trawl. Marina and Jemma have found a statement from someone who worked with her there, was in meetings with her and can confirm she definitely was. Could it be a brouhaha about very little? Is it Angela Rayner's council tax all over again? One thing's for sure, Rayner certainly isn't at all flustered in the clips from PMQ's Meanwhile, people are leaving X in their thousands as it increasingly becomes a boring cesspit. It's Bluesky who are benefiting and Marina and Jemma are certainly enjoying the cleaner air and better spelling. TV Presenter Carol Vorderman talks about growing up in poverty, her years on Channel 4's Countdown and why in the last two years she has got involved in trying to change British politics. Her new book is Now What?: On a Mission to Fix Broken Britain
Carol Vorderman has made a remarkable journey from Countdown maths guru to one of the most popular and forthright political commentators in the country… and a lot of people in the Torysphere really hate her for it. She tells Andrew Harrison what it's like to be in the right wing's sights – how British media and politics keep outsiders in their place – and about her new book Now What? How To Fix Broken Britain where she sets out a few ways to make British politics healthier… or at least less horrible.Buy Now What? My guest today is a woman who has truly come into her own in middle-age. A broadcaster, engineer, statistician and entrepreneur, at the age of 63 Carol Vorderman is now best known for fearlessly calling power to account. Sick of the sleaze and corruption she saw emanating from our politicians she decided it was time to speak up. And her million twitter followers and listeners to her LBC show listened. Why? Because she's one of us. An ordinary kid from a working class background, brought up by a single mum in North Wales. Carol is also a patron of Menopause Mandate, has been named one of the 25 most influential women by Vogue, and she's got an MBE. You get the picture. Now she's written a book, Now What? A book about politics for people who think politics isn't for them. Carol joined me to talk candidly about menopause and gaining her voice at 60, The lifelong impact of being a free school meals kid, The importance of financial independence and Why she won't be cowed by bullies and trolls. She also gives us a useful lesson in how to spot a narcissist. Carol vorderman is living life without apology. And I'm here for it. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Now What? by Carol Vorderman and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. We had the pleasure of being joined at JOE Towers by Carol Vorderman for a chat about all things political. Here Carol reacts to some choice moments of the last few years of Conservative rule, pinpointing the downfall of the government, and what Keir Starmer needs to do in power to win back the trust of the British public.Carol Vorderman's Now What? On a Mission To Fix Broken Britain is out now in all good bookshops. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Iain is joined by the one and only Carol Vorderman for some real For The Many fun. They discuss the state of the NHS, how Keir Starmer's getting on, Carol's views on the Tory leadership candidates, the Trump/Harris debate, the winter fuel payment cut, the Australian social media ban for young people and so very much more, including Carol's new book!
Beware the post-menopausal women who doesn't give a damn, says 63-year-old TV presenter Carol Vorderman. Carol, a self-described ‘old bird with an iphone' joins Nuala McGovern to discuss her new book: Now What? On a Mission to Fix Broken Britain. Part memoir, part tool kit the book relates Carols campaign to defeat the last Tory Government, and urges millions to find their voice and hold the new Labour Government, and all future governments, to better account. Following on from the Woman's Hour SEND programme yesterday, we now focus specifically on SEND provision for black and Asian minority ethnic families. Nuala is joined by Stephen Kingdom, Campaign Manager for the Disabled Children's Partnership, who shares exclusive findings from a report they have conducted. Plus, co-founder of the Sikh disability charity SEN Seva Praveen Mahal tells Nuala about her own personal experience. The pioneering photographer Lee Miller worked as a fashion model and an artist before becoming a war correspondent for British Vogue in the 1930s. Her images taken during World War II are some of the most arresting and enduring of the conflict. A new film about her life, which stars Kate Winslet, focuses on the period in her life when she defied convention to become a war photographer, travelling to the front lines. The film's director Ellen Kuras explains how they captured Lee Miller's adventurous spirit.Last night saw the first - and so far, only scheduled - televised presidential debate in the USA ahead of the election in November. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump spoke for 90 minutes, each accusing the other of lying. Women's issues were on the table for debate including a heated exchange on abortion. Nuala discusses with New York Times columnist Amanda Taub.Presented by Nuala McGovern Producer: Louise Corley

This Ep was recorded the morning of the election announcement so the Trawl ladies are busy collating all the best reactions for the next episode. This one unpacks a strange week for Suella but before they get into that, they begin their trawl with a wonderful moment from Carol Vorderman who had the Joe Lycett audience whooping with delight. The students at Cambridge were much quieter when GB News and Braverman turned up to ask them why they were protesting about Palestine. Words have power but sometimes, so does silence. Although the guest she confronted in the GB News about the same topic, was gloriously outspoken and for once, it seems Suella didn't have much to answer back with. Then it's onto some of the reaction from the same news outlet regarding Ofcom's finding that their ‘Ask Rishi' forum was impartial. Lastly, Jemma and Marina discuss the fact that Jeremy Clarkson has been voted sexiest man by the female users of a certain dating site. The mind boggles. Did you even realise the LibDems had held their Spring Conference? No, nor did Jemma and Marina. So in a bid to readdress the balance, the ladies open with a rather compelling snippet from leader, Ed Davey. Then it's onto a rare moment where Keir Starmer offers hope (but careful, it's the hope that kills you), before delving into GB News' latest accolade: yet another strongly worded letter from Ofcom regarding their breaching of the impartiality rules. But you know, these things happen...once, twice - or in the case of GB News - 12 TIMES. But maybe next time they'll face a proper section. The 13th time's a charm...Sticking with GB News, unlike their viewers, Jemma and Marina discuss Rees-Mogg's reaction to Ofcom's mild telling-off before getting stuck into the update you were all waiting for: Holly Valance's change of heart from Conservative to Reform. Jemma and Marina look forward to the next GB News installment where broadcasters bemoan Gary Lineker for not sticking to football, without even a hint of self-awareness. And it's about time a special mention was given to Special Economic Zones and freeports - a sinister policy and plan from this Government that is sweeping the country with very little coverage or accountability. Thankfully, Carol Vorderman is on hand to deep dive with the accuracy we all know and love her for. Finally a few tweets with some speculation over Obama's visit to Number 10 and a pudding from The Exploding Heads on Ofcom's latest weasel words. Carol Vorderman and Gary Lineker have been very vocal on social media, but only one of them have lost their job.The BBC's announcement of an independent review of its social mediaguidelines was aimed at defusing the crisis over Gary Lineker's tweets over government ministers' language about its asylum policies and bring the presenter back into the fold, at least in the short term. However, the practicalities of creating a set of rules to rein in star behaviour, while avoiding accusations of stifling free speech, are far from straightforward. What is to be done: Mark and Pete have the answers.
