Who is the author? - Paul Who is the audience? - The church in Rome What is the purpose? - Spiritual clarity What is the central message? - The Gospel Gospel = Good News Romans 1:16-17 // For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Unashamed: Acting openly without guilt or embarrassment. Why should we live unashamed? 1. I am unashamed because the Gospel is from God. Romans 1:1-2 // Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 1 Peter 1:20 (NLT) // God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake. 2. I am unashamed because the Gospel is about Jesus. Romans 1:3-4 // regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 3. I am unashamed because the Gospel leads to obedience Romans 1:5 // Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name's sake. Genuine faith is marked by a desire to please God. Matthew 5:16 // In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. 4. I am unashamed because the Gospel is for Everyone Romans 1:5 (ESV) // through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations The gospel is good news because it is the only message that can transform any person in any location with any situation. Romans 1:14-15 // I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. 5. I am unashamed because the Gospel is powerful. Romans 1:16 // For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. What can Roman toilets teach us about daily life in ancient Rome? What does the archaeology of these structures reveal about Roman hygiene, public sanitation, customs related to purity or cleanliness? On 2nd August 1595, as part of the Anglo-Spanish War of 1585-1604, four galleys containing somewhere between 200 and 400 Spanish soldiers landed at Mount's Bay on the coast of western Cornwall. The local militia fled and so the Spaniards went on to cause devastation in the area. Find out exactly what the Spaniards did in Cornwall in today's talk from historian Claire Ridgway, who shares primary source accounts. You can see this podcast as a video at the following link:https://youtu.be/fI-N7zVgYR8 Also on this day in Tudor history, 2nd August 1581, an English Protestant named Richard Atkins was burned for heresy in Rome. A listener sends a question via paper airplane, in accordance with social distancing guidelines, and the crew responds from the quarantine bunker. Due to reports of some cases of conversion to Roman Catholicism by a few Reformed ministers, theologians, and laypeople, said listener is intrigued if Reformed Theology tends to steer Protestants towards the Roman Catholic Church—more than, say, the average Baptist or other evangelical beliefs. Can we pinpoint a specific cause or a set of factors as the driving force leading Reformed Christians to Rome? What could be some of the possible attractions of Roman Catholicism? Why is the Church referred to as a "She?" What's going on with the JPII Institute in Rome? My health makes it difficult for my husband and I to have marital relations, and I'm concerned. What should I do? Ask Christopher West is a weekly podcast in which Theology of the Body Institute Director Christopher West and his beloved wife Wendy share their humor and wisdom, answering questions about marriage, relationships, life, and the Catholic faith, all in light of John Paul II’s beautiful teachings on the Theology of the Body. Love the podcast? Become a patron (https://community.theologyofthebody.com) of the TOB Institute! This week’s questions: Q1: Why is the church always referred to as a “She”? Obviously, we learned this from Jesus who will Himself marry His bride: the Church. But there must be reasoning beyond this. For instance, a ship is always referred to as a female. Does referring to the church as a "she" somehow refer to a woman’s womb? Like a ship, the womb is a safe dwelling place. Or am I making this all up? Q2: I've been hearing a lot about trouble with the JPII Institute in Rome? What's going on there? Q3: My husband and I have been happily married for 30 years. Living our Catholicism as married persons is very important to us. Our history of marital relations has been complicated because of some sexual abuse, body image issues, and depression for me and a brief period of pornography plus difficulty with emotional intimacy for my husband. We have worked hard to keep working at our relationship. Our marital relations have rarely been easy but we keep trying because we love each other and want to honor our spousal relationship. Most recently I have had some medical issues and surgery which has made having intercourse temporarily not possible. It has been over 6 months since we tried. We have gradually grown less affectionate because I don’t want to unfairly arouse my husband. Sometimes I am relieved but feel guilty about it, to have the medical excuse because the difficulties trying to be intimate are so emotionally painful. We are both so vulnerable and I am concerned our affection and sexual intimacy will never improve. Discouraged. Please advise. Many thanks. Hey Everyone! Malak and Vic just wanted to take a few minutes to catch up with one another and see how things are going in each other's personal lives. Generally, it is all business...preparation for podcasts, meetings about this and that, so on and so forth. That is how things get accomplished but in order to nurture the professional relationship, sometimes a little time focusing on nurturing the personal relationship is necessary. How is baby Rome? What is Malak doing in terms of training these days? How is LIFE? We love for our followers to feel like they know the people we are, not just the work that we do.

On this month's episode of Pastoralia, we return to talk about the Sacrament of Confession. While we may consider this topic to be understood by most practicing Catholics, there is never enough discussion both on the fruits of the Sacrament, but also on the various orbital topics that go along with it. Before we begin the topic itself, we begin the program by first making a slight detour per listener requests about "what to do now?" So you have been studying, you've come to the realization that you can have nothing to do with the heretics and apostates who occupy the Vatican and the diocesan sees across the world, but are confused as to what your obligations are from this point forward. We will let Father discuss this topic which is a very real one that all of us at one time faced. Then we will move right into the discussion on Confession. We begin talking about the obligations a Catholic has to fulfill in order to make a good confession and how parents must be the prime force in their child's life in not only teaching them to make a good confession, but also making it readily available to them. Father will discuss some "do's and don'ts" for parents regarding their children's confessions and frequency of its practice. Father will then give a commentary on what are important aspects of a child's confession that he should consider before entering the confessional, as well as that of adults. How often should we be going to confession? Should we have a regular confessor? What if that option is not available to us? Is it allowable for us to go seek out confession from a validly ordained priest who is of other religious congregations who are in union with the modernists in Rome? What are the rules of charity regarding making Sunday confessions when you have other opportunities to do so? Father will then hit on many aspects that give souls a moment of pause and present an obstacle to making a confession, such as: What if Father hears my voice and knows who I am? I can't just grab Father outside the confessional and ask him to hear a confession because he will know who I am! I am too embarrassed to tell Father this, he will think I'm a horrible person. Father presents a clear, concise, and priestly view on the reality behind the confessions that he hears on a daily basis and gives listeners the reassurance that when a man enters into the confessional, he is no "special snowflake," and that he should confidently and humbly approach a priest at any time that he needs to avail himself of the Sacrament. Father will even talk about his confessions, and how his confessions differ from that of the laity; our listeners may be surprised to hear that they hardly differ at all, except in one small detail. Father will close out with talking about perhaps the most important thing we can do upon a fall into sin and the time period that exists between being able to make a sacramental confession: the perfect act of contrition. Join us as we return for the second half of Season 3 with Fr. Stephen McKenna, assistant pastor of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio (and pastor of many mission chapels), and host Stephen Heiner as they conduct this month's episode of Pastoralia. Gondolas on the water in Venice, with the gondoliers singing soulful songs The leaning tower of Pisa Rome and the Colosseum There are so many things that remind us of Italy, aren’t there? The name Italy comes from the word Italia, meaning “calf land” Some say it was because the bull was a symbol of the Southern Italian tribes. If you look on a map, you will see that the country of Italy is shaped like a boot and has two islands – Sicily near the toe of the boot is home to 5 million people and the biggest island in the Mediterranean. Sardinia is smaller with stunning beaches and mountains. France, Switzerland Austria and Slovenia border on Italy. CITIES AND LANDMARKS IN ITALY Milan is known for its fashion designers and the second-largest cathedral in the whole world, Duomo di Milano. Also the opera house – La Scala is there. Genoa on the west coast is where Christopher Columbus was born and shipbuilding continues there today. Venice is a city built on a whole lot of islands. There are canals instead of roads, and boats instead of cars. You can see the sights in Venice by floating through its canals on a gondola. Gondoliers, men in striped shirts sing romantic songs as they propel you along with a long rowing oar. In the central part of Italy, olives and grapes are grown to make olive oil and wine, which are some of Italy’s major exports. In Florence, beautiful architecture and works of art are everywhere. The capital of Italy is ROME. Rome, has influenced the whole world. They built roads to and conquered many lands from England to Africa and their ideas about engineering and culture spread to those lands. Vatican city is the smallest country in the world. It’s inside Rome and it’s where the Pope – the leader of the Roman Catholic Church resides. The country is about an eight of the size of Central Pack in New York. It operates as an independent country, generating revenue from tourism, printing its own money, stamps and passports. Read more interesting things about it here http://www.history.
