ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 169 Happiness Is Meant to Be Shared with Author, Storyteller, and NEMO dadvocate Andrés Treviño Andrés Treviño is a dadvocate, author and storyteller. His story is full of twists and turns and even moving across countries to save his child. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person at the Global Genes Patient Advocacy Summit and I'm thrilled that you get to meet him too, because happiness is meant to be shared. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you tell us where your story begins? Andy and Sophia are the reason I got into advocacy. Andy was born in Mexico City with a condition called NEMO in 1999. Within 48 hours of birth, he developed a life-threatening infection and he wasn't able to fight the infection without IV antibiotics. My wife and I quickly became experts in extreme parenting, living in the hospital for almost 1000 days with Andy, battling infections of his nervous system, bones, GI tract, sinus and skin. We found a hopeful solution in moving to Boston. In Mexico City, we received a diagnosis of bad luck, but after a couple months at Boston Children's Hospital, we got a real diagnosis and real answers. In 2004, our daughter Sophia was born. Cells were gathered from her umbilical cord and at a couple months old, additional blood was taken from her bone marrow. The bone marrow and umbilical cord stem cells were used in a complex procedure to replace Andy's affected cells.  How are Andy and Sophia now? Andy is 23 and graduating college in December. He is studying Communications. Sophia just recently started college. They have a very special bond. We also have a third daughter Tanya who is 13 and a blessing.  What motivated your decision to do the work you're doing? My career was originally in professional communications, but after what we lived through, I wanted to help others facing similar situations and facing rare disease. I get to meet so many people in the rare disease community that inspire me with their resiliency.  What are your tips for someone who wants to tell their story? Think of six words that explain your story, like "happiness is meant to be shared", which is what I use to share my story. This gives you a starting point. Canned stories, or those that are read from a script, doesn't convey a story told from the heart. A raw story is sharing something very difficult and emotional which makes listeners feel bad for you, but it doesn't leave them compelled to do something. A well-told story is crafted, moments are selected to connect with the audience and practiced instead of read. I got behind the mic with my amigo Rey Treviño III (Director of Operations - Pecos Country Operating). I met Rey a few months back at a Crüe Club event, and since then we've become pretty good friends. From catching up at events to me being a guest on his podcast The Crude Truth. We chatted about how he got into the oilfield after a few years in the banking world. We discussed his experience of working in the field to learn about the industry and its importance of it. Also what it was like to be catapulted 5-6 years forward to being an operator through a series of chance events. Simon Warrack travels the world restoring the most sacred and beautiful buildings. As a stonemason he's worked on the Rose Window of Canterbury Cathedral, the Trevi fountain in Rome, and the Temple of Angkor Watt in Cambodia. Coming from a professionally musical family - his father is the music writer John Warrack, his grandfather was the composer and conductor Guy Warrack – it's no surprise that classical music is very important to him. But after taking a degree in Renaissance History at Warwick, Simon discovered his own personal vocation, and he's now pre-eminent as a stone carver and advisor on the restoration of temples and religious statues. He lives in Rome but is currently in Britain with a delegation from Cambodia who are examining the treasures of British museums to see how many of them were looted illegally and should go back. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are pretty much everywhere, and all of us have some level of exposure. Today we will talk about research presented at ENDO 2022 on a group of EDCs called parabens. The title of that abstract is “Parabens Promote Pro-Tumorigenic Effects in Luminal Breast Cancer Cell Lines With Diverse Genetic Ancestry.” Host Aaron Lohr talks with one of the authors of that study, Lindsey Treviño, PhD, assistant professor at City of Hope National Medical Center. Terry Thompson is a self-taught American artist, born in Chicago, Illinois. He currently lives and work in Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the Army for 9 1/2 years from 1980-1990. He also well-known veteran club dj/producer/promoter with releases on the London, UK record label Defected. During the 80's, Thompson often decorated nightclub parties with his photo-montages and collage works. He produced numerous events over the years including massive parties during the famed Winter Music Conference in Miami. In 1990, Thompson moved to a loft space in downtown Baltimore after a successful Army career. During that period he started his art career with small shows in his loft and eventually branch out to local exhibitions while simultaneously dj'ing and working in corporate America. His art creativity began with figurative collages and paintings influenced by Romare Bearden, Picasso, Miro, Modigliani, and his long-time friend, Spanish painter Salvador Bru. Today, Thompson has his own vocabulary that is a unique blend of colors, shapes, forms, and motifs inspired by dance/dj culture, fashion, design, dreamscapes, and experimental vistas.Thompson held Artist-in-residence from 1999-2004 at School 33 Art Center. Higher education was not in the plans for her and she joined the U.S. Army Reserves to give back to the USA for taking them in as immigrants.
