In Charlotte Wood's Stone Yard Devotional, an unnamed narrator renounces modern life in Sydney, retreating to a cloistered religious community in her hometown. But soon after, a series of three visitations causes the narrator to rethink the choice she's made. In today's episode, Wood speaks with NPR's Ari Shapiro about the novel, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2024. In today's conversation, the last in our Women in Theology series, we catch up with Regent's own Library Director and Professor of the History of Christianity, Dr. Cindy Aalders. Cindy has recently published her thesis as a monograph, The Spiritual Lives and Manuscript Cultures of Eighteenth-Century Women (2024). In this conversation, we delve into the archives and lives of Methodist, Baptist and Anglican women in the eighteenth century, seeking to understand their friendship, kinship and spiritual development as demonstrated in their letter-writing and diary entries. Cindy's work highlights the significant impact of women in relational spheres and religious communities. These women invested deeply in intergenerational friendships and spiritual kinship as they sought to be faithful to God. Cindy reminds us that we can learn much from them today as we strive to support one another in an increasingly isolated world. Cindy also shares her upcoming summer class, Children and Spiritual Identity (June 30–July 4).BioDr. Cindy Aalders is the Director of the John Richard Allison Library and Associate Professor of the History of Christianity at Regent College. She earned a Bachelor of Science from The King's University, a Master of Christian Studies and a Master of Theology in Spiritual Theology from Regent College. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy in History at the University of Oxford in 2014, focusing her research on eighteenth-century British women's spiritual lives and manuscript cultures. Cindy's doctoral thesis, The Spiritual Lives and Manuscript Cultures of Eighteenth-Century English Women, was recently released by Oxford University Press. All faith traditions have diverse opinions and practices on reproductive health, rights, and justice. In fact, the majority of people of faith in the U.S. support access to abortion care. Rev. Katey Zeh, ordained Baptist minister and CEO for the Religious Community for Reproductive Choice (RCRC), sits down to talk with us about the organization's recent blessings and spiritual support provided at abortion clinics. The movement and infrastructure of Christian nationalism coopts Christian language for a political agenda, including one which is anti-abortion; still, individuals in faith groups aren't a monolith. RCRC visited the Women's Health Center of West Virginia, which had lost its ability to provide abortion care post-Dobbs. The clinic went just over the border and purchased some medical office space to open the Women's Health Center of Maryland, where abortion care could be provided. RCRC brought the West Virginia staff to Maryland and performed the blessing on the Maryland clinic. The New York Times shared a story on this blessing in December, 2024. Support the showFollow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Bluesky: @reprosfightback.bsky.social Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

In this segment from the Son Rise Morning Show on Sacred Heart Radio, Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. discusses Women Religious with a focus on Apostolic and Contemplative Religious communities.Apostolic communities are characterized by their work of charity in the world. They are sent out to care for those who are suffering and witness Christ. The contemplative communities emphasize the need to pray for the world and growing in a deeper relationship with God through their prayer.Apostolic religious life is a form of consecrated life within the Church wherein the members profess vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience within a congregation or community approved by the Church. Shared community life is an integral part of this form of consecrated life. In professing vows and living within community, the members individually and as a whole witness to a life of communion with Christ, the Church, and one another. The mystery of the contemplative life is woven tightly with the mystery of the Incarnation. This mystery finds an especially vivid expression in the life of a cloistered nun, when a woman chooses to spend her whole life within the walls of a monastery, hidden from the world for the sake of intimacy with God. The cloister is a shocking thing, and sometimes non-Christians (and Christians!) are scandalized by it. But even more shocking is the idea that an infinite God chose to take on a finite human nature, to confine Himself within the limits of the created world, which, to Him, must have seemed far, far smaller than the bounds of a cloistered monastery! Notes:Learn more about Apostolic Religious Life here.Explore Contemplative Communities here.Leadership Conference of Women Religious.Click to view Living as Missionary Discipleship ResourcesVocational Discernment ResourcesRead Ad Infinitum blog posts on Accompaniment and Mentorship  Follow us:The Catholic Apostolate CenterThe Center's podcast websiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastsSpotify Fr. In this episode of On Mission, Sarah Harrigan Scalfaro, Chris Pierno, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. discuss the Pallottine Fathers and Brothers, the Society of the Catholic Apostolate, founded St. Vincent Pallotti.Founded by St. Vincent Pallotti, the Pallottine Fathers and Brothers seek to revive faith and rekindle charity in the hearts of all members of the faithful. Pallottines minister wherever the Church is in need and can be found in parishes, schools, universities, missions, and other Catholic organizations. The Pallottines of the Immaculate Conception Province are located throughout the eastern United States and Peru. Inspired by Saint Vincent Pallotti's motto, taken from St. Paul, "The charity of Christ urges us on," the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (the Pallottines) works throughout the world to further the Catholic Church's mission to renew faith and rekindle charity. As part of the Union of Catholic Apostolate, the Society of the Catholic Apostolate is a group of priests and brothers known as the Pallottines. Pallottine priests and brothers are a group of men who share a life of community, prayer, and apostolic work. They follow the charism and spirituality of their founder, St. Vincent Pallotti, who wanted to reawaken faith and love among Catholics and share the Gospel of Christ with all. Pallottines work to instill in others a deep conviction of their personal call to live as apostles of Jesus Christ. To remain faithful to St. Vincent Pallotti's call to "revive faith and rekindle charity," Pallottine priests and brothers promise the Society chastity, poverty, obedience, perseverance, the sharing of resources, and spirit of service. In this episode of "This Week in Religion," Fred Bodimer explores the financial health of religious organizations in the wake of the pandemic. A recent survey reveals that while median incomes are higher than in previous years, they are not keeping pace with inflation. Congregational leaders provide a mixed assessment of their financial health, with 61% rating it as excellent or good, despite ongoing concerns about future financial stability. The findings paint a complex picture of resilience and vulnerability among religious communities.

Send me a messageIn this episode of the Climate Confident Podcast, I engage in a fascinating discussion with Yonatan Neril, founder and director of the Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development (ICSD). Despite being an atheist myself, I recognise the potential of religion in shaping opinions and driving action. This prompted me to explore Yonatan's work in mobilising faith communities for ecological sustainability.Yonatan shares his journey from California to Israel, highlighting the deep connection between religion and ecology. We delve into the concept of integrating spiritual teachings with modern technological solutions to address climate change effectively. Yonatan explains how religious communities, often seen as a "sleeping giant," can be pivotal in inspiring ecological behaviour change. We also discuss the significance of the Faith Pavilion at COP28, which brought together diverse religious leaders to advocate for climate action. Yonatan offers practical examples of faith-based environmental initiatives and emphasises the importance of ethical consumption and sustainable living.Join us for an insightful conversation on how ancient spiritual wisdom can complement modern efforts to create a sustainable and spiritually aware future. Yonatan's ICSD links:FacebookInstagramTwitter andYouTubeWhether you're religious or not, this episode provides valuable perspectives on tackling the climate crisis. “It is a time when we're seeing a lot of revolutions with God outside of them. Let's make a revolution with God inside of it. It's the revolution of love for the Eucharist."  - Mother Adela In this episode, Tim and Mother Adela Galindo discuss how Mother Adela promised Mother Mary at the age of 7 that she would never say no to her. They also discuss the founding of her religious institute, the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary. When asked why people should show up to the National Eucharistic Congress, Mother Adela says we need to make a statement–and that statements are important.  This episode is packed to the brim with wisdom, insight, and a very clear love for Jesus and His Blessed Mother. Make sure to listen with a pen and paper to take notes! “I don't know the sacrifices that we may have to make to go to the Congress, but I believe it's worth it to make it, because we need to proclaim to the world that God's love is real. God's love has power. And God's love is concrete and is visible. “Types of Pastoral Care Practices There are various ways to practice pastoral care, including: Premarital counseling: Premarital counseling helps to prepare couples for unity in marriage. Pastors may recommend Bible verses, books, articles, and discussion topics for couples to review and pray about as they plan their life together. Weddings: Pastors performing weddings play the special role of celebrating and instituting a covenant relationship. Hospital visits: Visits to hospitals and care facilities can help those who are sick or injured to feel supported and remembered by their church family. Funerals: By facilitating funerals and caring for individuals and families in the grieving process, church leaders share the burdens of those experiencing the loss of human life. Serving the community: Church leaders can lead their congregation in providing food, clothing, and other material needs—as well as community services and gatherings—for local neighbors. In meeting with and listening to the community, churches can better connect, share the gospel, and partner with their neighbors. Birth and adoption celebrations: Meeting new parents with practical assistance like meals, diapers, financial resources, and childcare can help families care well for their children. Sustained support along the journey of parenting is another way that pastoral care can support families for long-term thriving. Spiritual direction: This pastoral care practice involves prayerful companionship and discipleship that points a person to scripture and fosters spiritual growth. -https://calvinseminary.edu/blog/difference-pastoral-care-counseling/. “What is a Humanist Chaplain? A Humanist Chaplain is a secular clergy person who provides comfort, guidance, and emotional support without relying on any religious doctrine or dogma. They also strive to promote reason, ethics, and compassion in the lives of those they serve. Humanist Chaplains usually have a staff position at universities, hospitals, prisons, or other settings where chaplains are typically present. Why is the Role of Humanist Chaplain Important? The role of a Humanist Chaplain is crucial as they provide emotional and moral support to individuals who identify as nonreligious (or anyone who wants it, regardless of their beliefs). They serve as a comforting presence offering guidance and counseling in times of crisis, grief, or ethical dilemmas. Their work helps to foster a sense of community and belonging among people who may feel isolated or misunderstood because of their secular beliefs. Humanist Chaplains contribute significantly to the diversity and inclusivity of moral and spiritual perspectives in society.” -https://nathanbweller.com/what-is-a-humanist-chaplain/. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

On November 7th, Ohio voters will decide whether to pass Issue 1, which would protect their decisions on contraception, fertility treatment, miscarriage care, and abortion. The fact that this amendment is even on the ballot is a huge feat. Ohioans had to submit hundreds of thousands of signatures to get the reproductive freedom amendment on the ballot this fall. Fearing that voters will take power into their own hands to protect reproductive rights, anti-abortion politicians forced a different amendment onto the ballot in August to raise the threshold for passing any future ballot measure from a simple majority to 60 percent of the vote. This thinly veiled attack on democracy and Ohioans' voting power to protect abortion failed by wide margins. Now, Ohioans will finally have the opportunity to weigh in directly on reproductive freedom in their state over the next several weeks. Early voting started on October 11th, and election day is on November 7th. As we approach the election, our friends at the ACLU of Ohio and Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights are engaged in efforts to get Ohioans to vote “yes” on Issue 1. Voting “yes” is imperative because there is so much on the line. Joining us today to share their campaign experience are Elizabeth Chasteen Day, statewide organizing director for the ACLU of Ohio, and Alexis Morrisroe, an educator and campaign volunteer.
