Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Mary Katherine Higdon and the shooting death of Steven Freeman. At first, Mary Katherine claimed the shooting was accidental and the gun had gone off as she was handing it to Steven. Later, her story would evolve into one of self-defense. This episode on the pellagra epidemic focuses on its prevalence in the U.S. in the early 20th century. Some of the scientific work done to understand it involves self-experimentation, and some of it is ethically problematic by today’s standards. Hi everyone, it's Katheleen, and I'm excited to bring you a new episode of Konfidence with Katheleen. You might have noticed my absence from social media and the podcast over the last few months. This wasn't because I ran out of inspiration, but because I was navigating some personal health challenges. In the past six months, life threw a lot at me, and by September, I was feeling constantly tired and drained. I could barely muster the energy to get through my work, let alone anything else. I thought I might be dealing with burnout or even depression. However, after speaking with friends, I realized there was more going on—it was a hormonal imbalance. Determined to find answers, I discovered Mary Katherine Nye, a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner at Straight 2u Wellness. With her help, I took a comprehensive blood test and found a natural solution tailored to my needs. But Mary Katherine's expertise doesn't stop at hormones; she offers a range of services designed to support overall wellbeing, helping clients achieve balance in many areas of their lives. In this episode, I'm excited to have Mary Katherine join us to discuss how hormonal changes and other health factors can affect your life, and how her diverse services can support your journey to wellness. My mission is always to help you, whether it's through equine connection or health advice. If you see yourself in my story or know someone who might benefit, please share this episode. The Villisca Axe Murder House has a dark and detailed history, steeped in mystery and tragedy. The events of that fateful night in 1912, and the subsequent investigation, have left many questions unanswered, contributing to the lore and intrigue surrounding the house. On the evening of June 9, 1912, Josiah B. Moore, his wife Sara, and their children Herman, Mary Katherine, Arthur, and Paul, along with two friends of Mary Katherine, Lena and Ina Stillinger, settled in after attending a church event. Sometime after midnight, an assailant or assailants silently entered their home. Each victim was bludgeoned to death with an axe, which belonged to Josiah Moore, indicating they were likely asleep when attacked. The killer or killers used the blunt end of the axe on the victims, and the murders were characterized by their overkill nature, suggesting extreme rage or a deeply personal motive. The investigation into the murders was extensive but flawed from the start, with the crime scene being compromised by curious townsfolk and inadequate forensic methods of the time. Several suspects were considered: Frank F. Jones, a Villisca resident and Josiah Moore's former employer, was rumored to have a grudge against Moore over business disputes and personal issues. William Mansfield, another suspect, was believed to have been hired by Jones to commit the murders, but he was later released due to lack of evidence. Reverend George Kelly, a traveling preacher, was in town the night of the murders and had a history of mental instability. He confessed to the murders under pressure but later recanted. His two trials ended in a hung jury and an acquittal. Numerous theories have been proposed over the years, including robbery gone wrong, a serial killer (as similar murders occurred in the region around the same time), or a crime of passion. None have been definitively proven. The house is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operates as a museum. It attracts visitors from around the world, particularly those interested in the paranormal. Many claim to have experienced strange phenomena such as visions, sounds, and ghostly apparitions, believed to be the spirits of the murdered family and their guests. Mary Katherine shares updates on her life, including moving to a new location for her needlepoint work, designing a needlepoint ring bearer pillow for her cousin's wedding, turning 40, and discovering the game of mahjong. She discusses the similarities between mahjong and needlepoint, such as the rhythmic and meditative nature of both activities, the importance of being able to see, and the sense of community they foster. On this week's episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Mary Katherine Rand, Executive Director of The Mary Parrish Center to share her inspiring story and to talk about the incredible work that The Mary Parrish Center does. The Mary Parrish Center was founded in 2002 to provide a full array of no-cost, comprehensive services to over 10,000 survivors of interpersonal violence which includes domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and/or human trafficking. Born out of a need identified by advocates in the community, The Mary Parrish Center spent their first seven years assisting victims with the order of protection process and providing support and guidance for their next steps. In 2009, after years of frustration, struggling to help survivors find safe, affordable housing, The Mary Parrish Center decided to take matters into their own hands and developed a program dedicated to providing transitional housing for survivors. In addition to safe, individual apartments, their Transitional Housing Program provides a wide range of flexible and optional support services including case management, clinical therapy, crisis intervention, economic empowerment, enrichment activities, financial assistance, housing advocacy, and workforce development. In 2019, they developed two new programs: their Rapid Re-housing Program and their Coordinated Entry Process - specific to survivors of interpersonal violence. Their survivor-focused programs enhance their residents' autonomy by nurturing their capacity to live independently from their abusers, establish self-sufficiency, and secure permanent housing - and a new, freer life. Mary Katherine started at The Mary Parrish Center as a therapist and now serves as Executive Director - so she has so many incredible stories and experiences from both positions/perspectives. You do not want to miss this great episode! In this episode you'll hear: Mary Katherine's inspiring life story; How Mary Katherine decided to become a therapist and how she ended up at The Mary Parrish Center; The inspiring story of Mary Parrish and how The Mary Parrish Center came to be; About the incredible work of The Mary Parrish Center; The powerful stories of women who have been served through The Mary Mary Parrish Center; And so much more. In this episode of Journey to the Blue Sky, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2013 Blue Sky Studios animated film Epic. Loosely based on the children's book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs by William Joyce, Epic is about a teenage girl named Mary Katherine who moves in with her father after her mother dies. Her father, a professor who is dedicated to looking for a group of creatures who live in the forest, ignores her and has no urgency to reconnect with her after being estranged from her for years. Mary Katherine starts leaving him behind, but gets caught up with the creatures that her father has been searching for and is shrunken by their queen to project the pod that would determine who the next queen is from the evil mastermind who wishes to turn the forest into decay. When the film premiered in theaters, it made $268 million dollars out of a $93 million dollar budget receiving mixed to positive reviews praising its animation, but saying that the story was derivative from Ferngully: The Last Rainforest and Avatar with its environmental message, plot, and characters. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support

Today we are joined by recent high school graduate Mary Katherine. After her parents restricted her from social media at age 13, she made the radical (and amazingly wise) decision at 16 to abstain from social media altogether. Kelly & Mary Katherine talk about the impact that has had on her life: how she maintains friendships without Snapchat, relevance without Instagram, and news without everything else. This is an inspiring and joyful conversation that will give every parent SO MUCH HOPE! Books referenced: Who Are You Following? On August 1, 2018, Mary Katherine Higdon was at home with her boyfriend Steven Freeman. Higdon says she was simply handing her boyfriend one of their guns, when it went off in her hands, shooting him. She also alleges that she didn't know there was a bullet in the chamber. Evidence at the crime scene makes it look more like some sort of fight was going on at the house right before the shooting. Eventually, Higdon confessed to the crime, but the recording taken at the police station had corrupted, and was unusable. If you're a busy parent struggling to stay healthy, you're not alone. With the demands of parenting, it can be difficult to find the time and energy to prioritize your own health and wellness. But it is possible - and more important than ever - to find the balance. Take it from Mary Katherine Stahl, the Community Manager for Fit Body Boot Camp: "As a mom, one of my priorities is being the one who takes them to school in the morning and prepares their meals, and has the craft waiting for them after school. Also, making a career for myself, so my kids can model and hopefully do something great themselves," says Mary Katherine Stahl, a busy mom, wife, and multi-business owner. She has a love for health and fitness and inspires others to be the best version of themselves. At the young age of 25, she started as a member at Fit Body Boot Camp and it quickly became the best part of her day every day. She used that passion and energy she felt at boot camp to open her own location in August 2017. The key to staying healthy as a parent is to have honest conversations with your partner about what you both value. For Mary Katherine Stahl and her husband, that conversation began with how to make their schedules work with two young children at home: "My husband knows that I value spending quality time with my children, but also making a career for myself," she explains. Communication is key, but so is nutrition. Mary Katherine Stahl focuses on eating protein and drinking plenty of water, and strives to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Exercise is also important, but with kids, it can be difficult to make time for it. Mary Katherine Stahl's solution? Bring the kids to the gym with you: "My daughter has been at the gym with us from 6 weeks old until now," she says. "Surrounding them with that from such a young age makes it easier to fit in that workout." It's also important to give yourself and your partner praise for the work you're both doing. "My husband needs that feedback," says Mary Katherine Stahl. "Just little things like that go a long way in our relationship because he just wants to feel appreciated." At the end of the day, Mary Katherine Stahl and her husband are grateful for the two children they share and all the blessings they have in their lives. "Life is crazy," she says. "But we're blessed." Staying healthy as a parent is a challenge, but it can be done. Take it from Mary Katherine Stahl: with honest communication, a focus on nutrition, and plenty of praise, you can find the balance you need to stay healthy and happy. In this podcast, you will learn about: How to balance work and family How to stay healthy and fit as a parent The importance of communication and appreciation between couples How to keep your relationship strong despite the challenges of parenting And so much more.
