On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with chef Olivia Ostrow of Miami's Ostrow Brasserie. Her restaurant is the only kosher-French restaurant in the United States. As a French person and a chef, Ostrow's love language is food. “This is how we express ourselves,” she says. Ostrow - who was born in Paris, moved to the States with her family in the 1990s, and spent time in Israel - grew up surrounded by a love and knowledge of food. While she has helmed both kosher and non-kosher restaurants throughout her career, a few years ago, Ostrow decided it was time to go back to kosher. It turned out that the owner of the building happened to be Jewish and religious, so they decided to become partners. “It was faith and fate,” she explains. Ostrow Brasserie opened in August 2023. Most people do not associate kosher with French food, and there's a reason: It's difficult. Not only is French cuisine butter based, everything needs to be made from scratch in order to actually execute a dish. There are so many kosher laws, besides not mixing milk and meat. Also, French is usually associated with fancy. However, Ostrow calls her cuisine “fine comfort food.” “The reason people outside of France don't associate it with [comfort food] is because they're not French,” she says. For Ostrow, beef bourguignon - a stew of short rib and braised with wine - was made from leftovers of the meat of the week. She would eat in front of the TV with mashed potatoes or pasta. Olivia Ostrow talks about her restaurant and love-of-food background, along with kosher-French cooking and comfort food. And, since Ostrow's restaurant's Valentine's Day menu is inspired by the most romantic cities in the world - Paris, Venice, Rome and Kyoto - she also shares her recipe for Heart-Shaped Raviolo (ravioli), which you can get at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. When you celebrate love, it “should be said in every language and in as many ways as possible,” Ostrow says. Learn more at OstrowBrasserie.com and follow @OstrowBrasserie on Instagram. The Upsurge was an invaluable show that documented two of the most pivotal labor union struggles in recent years as they were happening: the 2023 Teamsters contract fight at UPS, and the UAW's 2023 stand-up strike at the Big Three automakers. Even though The Upsurge has closed shop and Teddy Ostrow, Ruby Walsh, and the gang are moving on to new projects, we sat down with Teddy to take a moment to celebrate what they accomplished and talk about what we've learned from the last year in worker struggle. Summer might be over for us in the Northern Hemisphere — but things are still heating up in the US labor movement. A ground-swell of labor action continues to heave and crack the crust which had been slowly hardening on the surface of the radical fires dormant under neoliberalism. The latest news in the ongoing strike wave comes out of the United Auto Workers Union, where workers at a number of plants have walked out and are engaging in a historic “stand-up” strike — fighting for better wages and better working conditions. To talk about the strike, the labor movement more broadly, and the current state of the class war between workers and capital, we've brought on Teddy Ostrow, a labor and economics journalist and host of the podcast Upsurge. In this conversation Teddy talks about what it's been like out on the UAW picket lines, the revitalization and re-radicalization of the labor movement, where the labor movement in the United States is headed, and much more. The Teamsters are more aggressive than they have been in decades with UPS as the clock counts down to the contract expiration date following a reformer sweep in the international elections. In this episode of Off the Cuff with Danny LoPriore, I sit down with licensed therapist and clinical social worker, Haley Ostrow. She specializes in working with people of all ages that are suffering from anxiety, overthinking, and panic attacks. Having suffered from anxiety herself, Haley talks about dealing with anxiety growing up and how she ventured into the field of therapy. “I didn't really know that I wanted to be a therapist. I think I just knew that I wanted to help people in some way. Growing up, I considered myself being a good listener. I was a good listener to my friends. They would come to me. They would talk to me about the things that were going on and they would tell me that I was a good listener and that I helped them figure stuff out.” – Haley (04:34) During the conversation, Haley offers useful insights that people can use in their daily lives to successfully tackle anxiety and panic attacks on the go. No doubt, the first and best course of action according to her is to seek help and see a therapist immediately. But Haley provides some very useful tips on how one can temporarily rectify the situation when they are otherwise occupied such as at work. “People get anxiety at work or maybe they even have panic attacks at work. That can definitely happen. It's just overwhelming. You are trying to get through the day. So, I think being able to take a break when you can is super important. If you need to go to the bathroom and just have a breather, do that. If you can physically walk outside your office for a minute, do that.” – Haley (12:21) We are lucky to be living in a time where people are more open minded and informed to make better decisions and seek solutions to their problems; something that was not present for Haley. That's why her advice to anyone suffering from anxiety is to seek help immediately and take charge of your life. “I wish I had gone to therapy when I was younger. I wish it was suggested to me when I was younger. But back then nobody really talked about it. So, I don't think they were against it. I just don't think they knew about therapy. I think the older generation, they just didn't really go to therapy. That wasn't a thing so when they had kids, they were like what is that we don't do that. It is very stigmatized. You don't talk about it.” Haley (27:50) In This Episode: (01:58) Haley talks about dealing with anxiety growing up. (03:33) On thinking about death despite having no health issues. (06:27) How do you become a licensed therapist? (09:00) Talking about the challenges Haley faced as a woman struggling with anxiety. (12:20) How people can deal with work anxiety while at work. (13:38) On practical tips and strategies to possibly combat anxiety and panic attacks. (16:30) Haley on how she deals with anxiety now. (18:18) Haley recommends a couple of good books to read. (20:48) On whether her husband feels he is being psycho-analyzed. (21:52) On Haley's friends wanting to get free sessions. (22:47) On psycho-analyzing the public and people in her surroundings. (25:22) Seeing a therapist that only sees therapists. (28:38) Talking about entire families seeking therapy. (30:52) Haley talks about being kicked out of a house where she went to conduct therapy. (32:57) Is anxiety treatable? (35:02) Danny and Haley talk about OCD and treatment. (38:16) Haley gives advice to people suffering from anxiety. (41:38) Haley talking about her private practice, Inner Growth Counseling. (42:30) Danny asks Haley whether she is happy today. Our Guest Haley Ostrow is a licensed clinical social worker in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She has years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of settings including in-home family-based services, a residential treatment program, school-based therapeutic services, and outpatient therapy. As someone who herself suffered from anxiety at a point in her life, she understands the challenges teens and adults face on the road to recovery and guides them every step of the way to put them on the path of healing.
