"Jag står i tacksamhetsskuld till Sverige", berättar han när P1 Kulturs Anna Tullberg ringer upp Saunders i Kalifornien. "Mina tidiga noveller byggde på insikten jag fick om Amerika som en hård plats att leva på", berättar han. "Jag visste att jag kunde gestalta det här hårda och samtidigt vara rolig. Each chapter is hosted live and in-person at the guest's preferred location by Neil Pasricha, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Awesome, The Happiness Equation, Two-Minute Mornings, etc. For more info check out: https://www.3books.co “An astoundingly tuned voice, telling just the kind of stories we need to get us through these times.” Thomas Pynchon “Not since Mark Twain has America produced a satirist this funny.” Zadie Smith “George Saunders makes you feel as if you are reading fiction for the first time.” Khaled Hosseini I could keep going and going with other literary all-stars lining up to praise George Saunders but my favorite quote about George’s writing comes from Ben Marcus in The Believer back in 2004: “The Suits call his writing ‘stories,’ but they are really soft bodies to wear for a larger experience of life, hollowcore person-shapes that one can slip on in order to attain amazement. Saunders writes bodies, and his readers wear them.” Yes! That’s how I feel, too. Which is what made it such an immense pleasure to sit down with the humble genius that is George Saunders. Don’t take the genius label from me! He’s won a MacArthur Genius Grant, Guggenheim Fellowship, PEN/Malamud Prize and been named to Time’s 100 Most Influential People. He won the Man Booker for the mesmerizing otherworldly masterpiece Lincoln in the Bardo, and every time I read his short story collections Pastoralia and Tenth of December they just crack my heart wide open. And, just to extend the literary resume here, his most recent book A Swim in the Pond in the Rain is simply the best book on writing I have ever read. I highly recommend it to all writers. George Saunders has also been a Professor in Creative Writing at Syracuse University since 1997. Cheryl Strayed, our guest in Chapter 69, is one of hundreds who had George as a teacher and calls him a mentor today. Please enjoy this wide-ranging conversation discussing the computer we are all trapped inside, reading as a life project, how we process reality, practicing Buddhism, the world as a corrective force, delivering payoff, staying grounded, cultivating a love of literature in children, harnessing our shadow selves, quieting mental rumination, aiming our spigots, and much, much more … . The wisdom of George Saunders offers a true masterclass on writing, on living, on life. Let’s flip the page into Chapter 75 … What You'll Learn: How does our brain process reality? How do writers justify the non normative and guarantee pay off? What is a reading project? How does death amplify life? What is the self? What is efficiency in writing? How should we stay grounded despite success? When should writers compare themselves to the masters? How should we think about kindness? What can we learn from Buddhism? What is an innate tendency of mind? How can parents cultivate a love of literature in their kids? How can we channel our different mental states to be creative? How does exploring one’s dark side or subconscious impact one’s writing? How can the minutiae of editing save a writer? How can we learn to live more freely?   You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/75  Leave us a voicemail.

In this episode of Pastoralia, we take a few steps backward from our look at Catholic child rearing to discuss the Catholic ideal of courtship. Blind and infatuated worldlings date in order to date, with perhaps only the remotest thought to the permanence of marriage. Why, then, does a Catholic not merely date for the sake of dating? We begin our episode with a look at the purposes of courtship, which extend well beyond compatibility testing. Next we speak about the spiritual aspect of courtship and, for all the good which may come out of it, the necessary near occasions of sin it requires. How is a Catholic to court virtuously? Before moving any further, armed with the knowledge of the purposes of courtship, Father discusses who is — and who isn't — someone to pursue in a courtship. Avoiding stock answers, we look at not only the most basic requirements, without which a marriage would lack a common foundation, but, beyond the necessities and although not strictly required, how compatibility between two potential spouses is something not to be dismissed as somehow worldly and uncatholic. Knowing why and with whom, we then ask when is the right time to consider marriage, to which the whole of courtship is directed. Is a difference in age fatal to the endeavor? Is it to be desired? How does maturity factor in? On the topic of maturity, we confirm that the man who fails to pursue a woman in a courtship, instead expecting her to engage him, not only hasn't met his responsibility as a man, but probably did not deserve the chance he wasted in not approaching her in the first place. A harsh truth indeed! This manliness (action, not braun) required for courtship, has long been under fire by those who preach equality of the sexes. Once a couple has entered into a courtship, we discuss how long a courtship (and eventual engagement) should last. During that time, is constant chaperoning required as the virtuous thing to do? Finally, we close our episode with family issues which may arise during a courtship. Should the idea of "marrying a family" be an issue — especially if the family doesn't like you or your family doesn't care for the person you've invited to Christmas dinner? What about objections voiced by parents against the potential marriage: Should this be fatal to the nuptials? Join Fr. Stephen McKenna of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio (and many mission chapels), Mr. Justin Soeder, and host Joshua Gunsher in this episode of Pastoralia. On this season's inaugural episode of "Pastoralia," we pick up where we left off last season, in the second of two episodes devoted to understanding Catholic parenting and child rearing. My, how these children have grown in just a few months! Diapers and strollers have given way to increasingly independent pre-teens and teenagers. It is on these older children that we focus in this episode, again steadying ourselves on perennial Catholic thinking, rather than the absurd and dangerous maxims of the world. We begin our discussion with the Fourth Commandment, which requires us to honor our parents, not merely to obey them. Should a child need to be corrected, we address how to reprove a child without cultivating an unhealthy fear of his parents, while keeping in mind the words of St. Paul, "Fathers, provoke not your children to indignation, lest they be discouraged" (Col. 3:21). Our conversation continues as we explore how to cultivate independence in our children, teaching them how to make their own wise decisions, but in such a way that still protects their souls and bodies from danger. Children learning a healthy, Catholic self-reliance often benefit from a good balance between the demands made in maturity and a continued need for recreation. In this portion of the episode, we find out that balance is critical. What, then, of a child who has become so disproportionately filled with a spirit of independence that he rebels against his parents or the Church? We work through this particular effect of Original Sin, and offer a means of choosing to control and harness rebellion, directing it against those vices which are worthy of adolescent contempt. Finally, we ease our way into dating and courtship, not only as part of the process of choosing a state of life, but as something which requires care and virtue to be practiced by the young. Fraught with the potential for serous spiritual harm, we also explain the need to keep the home as a spiritual safe haven. Join Fr. Stephen McKenna of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in West Chester, Ohio (and many mission chapels) and host Joshua Gunsher in this month's episode of "Pastoralia." On this month's episode of Pastoralia, we take on a perennial topic in part 1 of a 2 part discussion: the Catholic understanding of parenting and the raising of children. This is a topic which is obscured and largely influenced by a cacophony of noise from modern pop psychology and pseudo-intellectual modern parenting books. We begin the conversation with a discussion of the child-rearing theories of the modern world and the inherent problems with them. Father will compare those to the Catholic principles of child-rearing and why the Catholic building blocks of child raising and why these principles provide children with the best possible chance of retaining the Catholic faith, saving their souls, and being productive members of society. We will talk about the issues surrounding the nursing of children, what is appropriate and what is not, the norms of modesty as it relates to nursing, and when the nursing should end. The subjects of children sharing bedrooms, disciplining the children and corporal punishment. There seems to be quite the debate even among traditional Catholics about corporal punishment, and Father will lay out the biblical reference for such punishment and the guiding principles for the use of it. Father will give instruction on the spiritual duties of the parents and will illustrate that spiritual duty is the reason behind all of the actions in how parents raise their children. Join us as Fr. On this month's episode of Pastoralia, we tackle a subject that is somewhat confusing to the laity and accompanies with it some degree of fear: Extreme Unction and Last Rites. We will begin by having a deep discussion of what exactly this Sacrament is, what it is not, and understanding the difference between Extreme Unction and the Last Rites. After we examine the nature of the Sacrament, then we will shift into what the necessity of it is, when a Catholic may ask for it, and what the requirements for requesting it encompass. Father will guide us through sick calls, proper etiquette and disposition during a "routine" sick call versus an emergency call where death is imminent. Father will also discuss how to discern when it is appropriate to call a priest, dispel many myths that people usually have regarding this Sacrament and how frustrating it is for a Priest to have an individual or a family "hold back" and wait too long before calling and potentially risking the soul of the sick person who is in genuine need of the Sacraments. For those of you who have uttered the words I don't want to bother Father with this, this is an episode you really need to hear. How should your home be ordered upon arrival of the Priest making the sick call? What requisite components should be near the bed of the sick individual needing the Sacraments? What is the process and what actually occurs during the anointing? What items should one have on hand for a sick call? What items should one not have in the room during a sick call? Who is permitted to be in the room with the Priest? What should the atmosphere of the room be during a sick call between the sick, the Priest, and those present? How often can one receive the Sacrament of Extreme Unction or Last Rites? What type of oil is permitted for use in the Sacrament and how is it obtained? If you are asking any of these questions, then this episode is for you. This show dissects the subject of this Sacrament and Father provides us with a clear and focused understanding of the Sacrament, when to ask for it, and why we should do so confidently rather than feeling guilty for making the request. On this month's episode of Pastoralia, we return to talk about the Sacrament of Confession. While we may consider this topic to be understood by most practicing Catholics, there is never enough discussion both on the fruits of the Sacrament, but also on the various orbital topics that go along with it. Before we begin the topic itself, we begin the program by first making a slight detour per listener requests about "what to do now?" So you have been studying, you've come to the realization that you can have nothing to do with the heretics and apostates who occupy the Vatican and the diocesan sees across the world, but are confused as to what your obligations are from this point forward. We will let Father discuss this topic which is a very real one that all of us at one time faced. Then we will move right into the discussion on Confession. We begin talking about the obligations a Catholic has to fulfill in order to make a good confession and how parents must be the prime force in their child's life in not only teaching them to make a good confession, but also making it readily available to them. Father will discuss some "do's and don'ts" for parents regarding their children's confessions and frequency of its practice. Father will then give a commentary on what are important aspects of a child's confession that he should consider before entering the confessional, as well as that of adults. How often should we be going to confession? Should we have a regular confessor? What if that option is not available to us? Is it allowable for us to go seek out confession from a validly ordained priest who is of other religious congregations who are in union with the modernists in Rome? What are the rules of charity regarding making Sunday confessions when you have other opportunities to do so? Father will then hit on many aspects that give souls a moment of pause and present an obstacle to making a confession, such as: What if Father hears my voice and knows who I am? I can't just grab Father outside the confessional and ask him to hear a confession because he will know who I am! I am too embarrassed to tell Father this, he will think I'm a horrible person. Father presents a clear, concise, and priestly view on the reality behind the confessions that he hears on a daily basis and gives listeners the reassurance that when a man enters into the confessional, he is no "special snowflake," and that he should confidently and humbly approach a priest at any time that he needs to avail himself of the Sacrament. Father will even talk about his confessions, and how his confessions differ from that of the laity; our listeners may be surprised to hear that they hardly differ at all, except in one small detail. Father will close out with talking about perhaps the most important thing we can do upon a fall into sin and the time period that exists between being able to make a sacramental confession: the perfect act of contrition. Join us as we return for the second half of Season 3 with Fr. On the latest Granta podcast we hear from George Saunders. One of the finest, funniest writers of his generation, he writes stories that pulse with outsized heart, crackle with the ad-speak and eek out the human story from the lives of theme-park workers and the subjects of strange drug tests that enhance libido and eloquence. His books include CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, In Persuasion Nation, Pastoralia and most recently Tenth of December. He has also published a book of essays, The Braindead Megaphone. Here he spoke to online editor Ted Hodgkinson about allowing his characters access to goodness, why he wants to avoid ‘auto-dark’ in his stories, how the death of David Foster Wallace affected his writing and closing the gap between art and life.
