US Route 466 is in my opinion one of the most underrated US Routes to exist historically given it has been grossly overshadowed by it's parent route. US Route 466 also has one of the oddest alignments ever to exist in the US Route System via the rugged dirt grades of Rocky Canyon of San Luis Obispo County, California. The alignment of US Route 466 existed via the unsurfaced route via Rocky Canyon for a quarter century amid the early boom of freeway development in California. Like abandoned roadways, obscure places and general road related oddities? If so, former US Route 466 via Rocky Canyon and the Rocky Canyon Trail has you covered! Conor Tallon and the Crawford Gallery's Assistant Curator Michael Waldron celebrate this week'sWORK OF THE WEEK… cos it's a kind of homecoming, like!Sun sets over a maritime city, as river waters ripple in the wake of a seagoing vessel. Like the tide itself, Paddle Steamer Entering the Port of Cork (1842) is all about comings and goings.Approaching Cork by water was once much more commonplace than today and it was a sight that artist George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson (1806-1884) knew well. A native of Cobh, he grew up in Cork Harbour and spent his early career at sea as a ship's carpenter. Upon his return, he became Government Surveyor of Shipping and Emigrants, as well as a self-taught painter. In this warm and welcoming painting, the artist depicts a paddle steamer making its way upriver to the Port of Cork. The historic Bonded Warehouses may be picked out at the centre of the scene, while dozens of masts break the skyline on both channels of the river, emphasising the importance of the harbour to the city's commerce, prosperity, and identity.Flanking the river on either side, the church steeples of St Anne's, Shandon and St Patrick's (right) and old St Fin Barre's Cathedral and city hall (left) can be readily identified. The fine offices of the St George Steam Packet Company (Penrose House) can also be glimpsed between moored vessels at Penrose Quay (centre right).Wherever you may be this festive season, we wish you all safe harbour, fair winds and following seas.Paddle Steamer Entering the Port of Cork (1842) is featured in STATIO BENE: Art and Ireland's Maritime Haven until April 2021. I've been reading Mike Allred comics pretty much since I got into comics, he's as classic to me as ska and ska/punk. He's a guy that makes me still love superhero comics, while bringing his indie idealism into the fold. Kinda like a lot of these bands. Kill Lincoln and Bite Me Bambi are taking that ska/punk sound and totally elevating it! And there's also great tracks from Shandon, King Kong 4, the Skajects, and Smoke Like a Fish rounding out this episode like Laura Allred's colors round out Mike's line work!

Thanks for joining us for West Seattle Daily, Episode #010, brought to you by Sea-Town Real Estate. I'm your host, Christian Harris. As you can probably hear, I'm in a large cavernous "great room" of my in-laws in NC still, enjoying our family this holiday season. Well, our last day of 2019 is here! & we're here to help make it the best celebration yet. Today we will be sharing the best New Years Celebration Tips for West Seattle. Starting with the main attraction - New Years Midnight Fireworks. Bundle up, grab your closest friends & family and head outside to a location where you have a view of the space needle. Hamilton Viewpoint Park at the North end of California Ave in the Admiral District tends to be a pretty popular location with a spectacular Seattle city skyline view. If you find yourself on the West Side of WS, you can often see the Tacoma & Bainbridge island fireworks shows across the Puget Sounds as well. Before the fireworks, make sure to take advantage of many of the specials the West Seattle Junction restaurants and pubs are offering, helping people celebrate and ring in the New Years with complimentary Champaign toasts: *There’s no place like home for New Years. Home, as in the heart of West Seattle. The Junction has the perfect set up for a nice dinner out on “the town” then followed by door-to-door drink options. Adam Gould--though he wore a cabbie hat during this podcast, hiding his beautiful lion's mane--figuratively wears many hats: from beer drinkin'/meat smashin'/hard chargin' rock guitarist who will rip yer head off with a smile on stage to a delicate soul who thinks and feels deeply, wears his heart on his sleeve, and writes solo acoustic ballads that showcase his Buckley-esque voice. Seven years ago, he left the hustle and bruising bustle of NYC to create sounds in the sweet Southern garden of Charleston, SC. He plays all the string instruments with a large number of bands/artists/projects while simultaneously working on his own music and artistic persona and teaching others on all those string instruments (including piano!). Ultimately, he disproves the notion that to be a professional, working, street musician you must live in one of the biggest cities. A master musician who is constantly honing his craft, working on his writing, production, jazz chops, harmony singing, learning new instruments. (He is always in the shed--I know, I lived with him and listened to him transcribe entire old records, while writing whole new records.) Modest to a fault. Always fun and ALWAYS unnecessarily self deprecating. He is intentionally and unintentionally hilarious. I'm madly in love with this dude. We are joined by Southern wordsmith and voice of reason, Shandon Lesesne.
In this bonus "earpetizer" of The Good Words Podcast, host Lynn Hickernell features an excerpt from Dickens's A Christmas Carol, the poem "The Bells of Shandon" by Francis Sylvester Mahony, and a special listener-submitted edition of, "GET IT?!?!?" www.StoryLinkRadio.com An unnamed narrator marries Morella, a woman with great scholarly knowledge who delves into studies of the German philosophers Fichte and Schelling, dealing with the question of identity. Morella spends her time in bed reading and teaching her husband. Realizing her physical deterioration, her husband, the narrator, becomes frightened and wishes for his wife's death and eternal peace. Eventually, Morella dies in childbirth proclaiming: "I am dying. But within me is a pledge of that affection... which thou didst feel for me, Morella. And when my spirit departs shall the child live." As the daughter gets older the narrator notices she bears an uncanny resemblance to her mother, but he refuses to give the child a name. By her tenth birthday the resemblance to Morella is frightening. Her father decides to have her baptized to release any evil from her, but this event brings the mother's soul back into her daughter. At the ceremony, the priest asks the daughter's name, to which the narrator replies "Morella". Immediately, the daughter calls out, "I am here!" and dies. The narrator himself bears her body to the tomb and finds...

Old as Ireland itself, these whimsical folktales bring you the jumble and tumble of men and magical creatures who walk the lanes of the Emerald Isle by day and wander its fields by night. Henpecked husbands scheme to get rich; ghosts roam the land seeking rest. Haunted abbeys, mournful ghosts, enchanted gold, deadly brigands, and a host of fairies and leprechauns. Add to them Darby O’Gill and his wife Bridget, told by our professional Seanchai's, and you wind up with strange and exciting adventures that are sure to delight children and grown-ups alike!
