On the 19th anniversary of my own flight from Scientology, my wife Claire joins me to share her harrowing tale of escape, a saga of defiance and cunning woven amidst the stifling grip of the organization. With the passing of L. Ron Hubbard echoing in the background, we unravel the threads of a meticulously crafted exit plan, where every covert phone call and secret suitcase packed was a step towards liberty. Claire's story is not just one of escape, but a revelation of the raw power dynamics and the choking surveillance that once dictated our lives within the group's international base.As Claire and I dissect the events leading to her audacious break for freedom, it's a narrative that grips you with its intensity. Imagine the adrenaline of navigating a Walmart to meet a secret cab ride arranged through a torn-out phone book page, or sitting at a bus station, guarding your belongings against high-ranking members determined to drag you back. The episode lays bare the strategies and manipulations employed by Scientology, painting a vivid picture of the lengths one must go to evade the clutches of such an organization. Claire's encounter with Greg Wilhere and Sharon Johnston, known for their imposing presence within the group, epitomizes the confrontation between personal will and institutional control. The podcast culminates with a poignant reflection on the aftermath of escape and the challenges of starting anew. The emotional turmoil of adjusting to a world of strangers, the strategies to prevent abduction, and the cathartic act of preparing a meal together are all steps on the journey towards healing. Claire's and my conversation is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring quest for freedom. It's a raw look at the emotional landscape one traverses when leaving behind a life of control, and an inspiring story of the new beginnings that lie ahead.Support the showBFG Store - http://blownforgood-shop.fourthwall.com/Blown For Good on Audible - https://www.amazon.com/Blown-for-Good-Marc-Headley-audiobook/dp/B07GC6ZKGQ/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=Blown For Good Website: http://blownforgood.com/PODCAST INFO:Podcast website: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2131160/shareApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/blown-for-good-behind-the-iron-curtain-of-scientology/id1671284503 Spotify: ...
In this episode of Talking Practice, host Grace La interviews Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, partners and co-founders of Johnston Marklee and Professors in Practice of Architecture at the GSD. Sharon and Mark discuss the beginning of their partnership, which is deeply rooted in a shared connection to Los Angeles. The pair reflect on the demands of oscillating between project types-- designing for single-family homes and for institutionally scaled projects-- explaining how this spectrum of work influences their working dynamic and office culture. They provide insights into the “art of finding the problem” and how they foster an economy of means through strategies for building components. Mark and Sharon also describe their interest in exhibitions and the significance of interiors. As practitioners and professors, Mark and Sharon discuss the role of art and history in designing spaces, teaching students and guiding academia. When Sharon Johnston started playing golf in 1975, she went all in, both on and off the course. A natural athlete, she began competing almost immediately. As a member of Fircrest Golf Club, she became involved with the Washington State Women's Golf Association (WSWGA), and in 1984 served as its president. In 1998, she would win the WSWGA Championship, adding her name to a list of prominent champions. She competed in the inaugural Washington Women's Amateur in 1994. She soon became involved with the WSGA (now WA Golf), first as a Club Representative, then as a member of the Board of Directors, and then as a member of the WSGA Executive Committee. She served as the chair of the WSGA Championship Committee from 1997-2007, and was instrumental in the expansion of WA Golf's statewide championships. She had to step down from that role only because she became the first woman president of the WSGA in the fall of 2007, and would carry out those duties for two years. Her other volunteer roles include serving on the WA Golf Course Rating team, as well as the Rules committee.

How do you make your own architectural statement on a street filled with eye-grabbing Eric Owen Moss buildings? Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee talk about bringing “decorum,” pillowed tilt-up concrete and hidden outdoor rooms to their subtle remodel of UCLA’s graduate art studios on Hayden Avenue in Culver City. And we learn about the massive, sometimes illegal, global trade in used stuff and where it winds up after we've tossed it out. Fun fact: The Japanese hoard as much as Americans.
Make sure you listen tomorrow night as it will be LADIES NIGHT with GLOW girls Noelle Rose, Sharon Johnston, April Enriquez and more. This morning Court Bauer, owner of Major League Wrestling, made a major announcement concerning a new sponsor for the promotion, and the sponsor is a major player in advertising on sporting events. On the AEW front, the main players, Cody and The Young Bucks, have been invading various indie promotions and causing quite a reaction. They are also set to sign the son of an 80s TV teen heartthrob who has been making a splash on the indie scene. Cody has also indicated a willingness to take on a group of athletes who are starting to make a big noise in wrestling. The AEW situation is definitely causing major waves in Stamford as another major name has supposedly turned down a position within the company planning on a post ring future. There are also reports that Vince is apparantly ready to make some major offers in order to keep people. On the WWE front, might we be hearing a familiar laugh on TV in the near future? There is supposedly some WONDERFUL news on the horizon. There has also been some more information coming out concerning the situation with The Revival and why they are allegedly unhappy. There may also be another return happening soon as one of the long time stalwarts of WWE is in Orlando for tests to see if he can be cleared to return to the ring. Speaking of returns, Alexa Bliss officailly announced her return to action beginning Sunday. It was during that announcement that Lacey Evans made her first official live audience appearance, and let's just say it didn't go as well as she, and probably Vince, expected. After last night's good go home version of RAW, SmackDown Live will be set to give us action leading into Sunday. Get ready for a fun night of talk.
Earlier this summer I sat down with Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee to discuss their practice, Johnston Marklee, in front of a live audience at this year's LA Design Festival. We discuss the origin of their practice, their relationship to LA, the eclectic group of collaborators they have worked with over the years, and their unique approach to telling the story of their work in their recently published monograph.

Sharon Johnston talks with Big Blend Radio about the community projects and historic preservation work of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, especially regarding her local Parlor #179 in San Juan Bautista, California, that operates out of The Adobe, built in 1834 and restored in 1935, and currently being restored again. www.ndgw.org/179.htm
Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee are among the leading figures in a new generation of Los Angeles architects. Ranging from the private houses for which they are best known, to cultural projects such as the ongoing Drawing Institute at the Menil Collection in Houston (a commission won against a star-studded field), Johnston Marklee‘s buildings stand apart for their calmness, distilling the complexity of brief or site into a coherent formal purity.
