In this powerful episode of Shat the Movies, hosts Gene Lyons and Big D, Dick Ebert, journey down under to revisit Peter Weir's 1981 war drama Gallipoli. Commissioned by listener Mac in Texas, this Australian New Wave classic stars a young Mel Gibson and Mark Lee as two spirited athletes drawn into the brutal realities of World War I. The Shat crew reflects on how Gallipoli flips the traditional war movie formula, building deep emotional connections with its characters long before the first shots are fired. From the dusty outback to the trenches of the Dardanelles, Gene and Big D dissect the film's themes of friendship, blind patriotism, and the gut-wrenching cost of war. They also explore how the film balances coming-of-age charm with historical tragedy—right up to its final freeze frame. With heartfelt insights, personal stories, and a few unexpected laughs along the way (yes, venereal diseases and desert treks come up), this episode reminds us why some war films hurt in all the right ways. Plot SummaryGallipoli is a 1981 Australian war drama directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson and Mark Lee. Set during World War I, the film follows two young sprinters from Western Australia—Archie and Frank—who enlist in the Australian Imperial Force and are eventually sent to fight in the doomed Gallipoli campaign. Through their journey, the film explores themes of friendship, national identity, disillusionment, and the tragic futility of war, culminating in one of cinema's most unforgettable endings. With Anzac Day just around the corner, Born to Watch honours a defining moment in Australian cinema with our Gallipoli (1981) Movie Review. Directed by Peter Weir and starring a young, raw Mel Gibson alongside Mark Lee, this film is more than a war story, it's a devastating portrait of friendship, sacrifice, and the tragic cost of blind patriotism. In this episode, Whitey and G-Man revisit the classic through a lens shaped by age, memory, and national identity. From the iconic opening scenes of sprinting through the outback to the haunting stillness of the battlefield at the Neck, Gallipoli strips away the glory of war and lays bare its cruel realities. The boys waste no time diving into the emotional core of the film, mateship. Whitey and G-Man see themselves in Frank and Archie, and they hilariously debate who's who. Is Whitey the cynical Frank, or is G-Man secretly more Archie than he'll admit? But it's not just about comparisons and callbacks to high school Anzac ceremonies. This is Born to Watch at its most reflective and reverent. The guys dig into the cultural significance of Gallipoli, how the film shaped their understanding of the Anzac legacy, and why it's essential viewing for every Australian. It's also a rare episode where the crew admits that this one is hard to joke about. Except, of course, when it comes to figuring out which of their mates is most like Snowy. They talk about how Gallipoli taught them what Anzac Day should mean. Not just a day off to play two-up and hit the pub, but a moment to remember real sacrifice. The 1981 film still hits hard, they argue, because it doesn't sugarcoat the futility of war. And when that final freeze frame lands, it guts you, every time. There's admiration for director Peter Weir, whose resume includes Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and Master and Commander. But here, he's in peak form. Gallipoli's scale is intimate but never small; its visuals are sweeping, yet grounded in the personal. And the music? That synth track when Archie sprints across the desert? Still gives the boys goosebumps. The episode gets personal, too. Both hosts recall trying (and failing) to get their teenage kids to watch the film. They revisit childhood memories of Anzac Day school assemblies, the eerie power of “Only 19” and “Waltzing Matilda,” and the VHS that left a permanent mark. G-Man shares stories from his own pilgrimage to Gallipoli, visiting Lone Pine and The Nek and seeing firsthand the terrain that made the battle a bloodbath. As always, there's room for laughs, the mystery of Mark Lee's post-Gallipoli career, and whether it's safe to train for battle with live rounds (spoiler: probably not). But the tone stays grounded, respectful, and proud. They wrap things up with “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” highlighting Gallipoli's haunting silence, its unwavering focus on mateship, and its place in Australian cinematic history. It's not just a war film; it's a rite of passage.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Does Gallipoli still define the Anzac spirit? Is this Mel Gibson's best early performance?Have you visited the battlefield yourself?Drop us a voicemail at BornToWatch.com.au and be part of the show!#Gallipoli1981 #BornToWatch #GallipoliMovieReview #AnzacDay #PeterWeir #MelGibson #AustralianCinema #WarMovies #MoviePodcast #LestWeForget

Herb's picked a few Aussie classics and this week's pick is no exception with the war drama Gallipoli! Gallipoli, directed by Peter Weir, was a large-scale and highly ambitious undertaking that sought to depict the experiences of young Australian soldiers during the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign of World War I. Weir, who co-wrote the film with David Williamson, worked closely with producer Patricia Lovell and cinematographer Russell Boyd to bring the story to life with authenticity and emotional depth. Filming primarily took place in South Australia and Egypt, using real locations to evoke the desolate battlefields of the Gallipoli Peninsula. The filmmakers worked hard to realistically depict the soldiers' journey from rural Australia to the trenches, emphasizing the historical details of the era and the grim realities of war. Casting Mel Gibson and Mark Lee as the young soldiers Archy and Frank, Gallipoli highlighted the friendships, idealism, and patriotism that drove many Australians to enlist. Gibson, who was then relatively unknown, delivered a powerful performance alongside Lee, capturing the emotional toll of the war on young men. To create the movie's climactic scenes, the production team used hundreds of extras and recreated significant portions of the battlefield, ensuring the film's epic yet tragic feel. Though budget constraints were a challenge, the film achieved a lasting impact, celebrated for its historical significance, poignant storytelling, and for portraying a pivotal moment in Australian and World War I history. We will have on Captain Howard "Buddy" Hayes with Jersey City FD describing his nozzle and it's capabilities. Capt. Hayes was promoted in 2018, where he spent a majority of his career in Engine 10 working under Capt. Mark Lee who eventually passed from 9/11 related illness. He was instrumental in my career. Wrote his first SOP collaboratively in 2023. The turtle fire system is an under vehicle nozzle that is capable of flowing upwards of 500gpm at 100psi at the device. Can be used in high or low flow depending on the situation and has numerous alternate uses outside of battery cooling. The Turtle is extremely durable, made of 100% US steel. Its unique design allows for full coverage of the EV battery. The pipe that comes with the system is critical to its success as it gives added protection from hose burn through. We will check it out and give you the straight skinny.
