As you'll hear his family spent over a century in the UK before moving to Israel and says his British-Jewish heritage shapes his identity and his mission as President. This week on the Podcast, Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley shares her Defence Partner journey.   After meeting at a function and bonding over our defence life experiences I took a chance and asked Mrs Hurley if she might consider coming on the MWL podcast to tell her story. It was the end of the night and she had mingled and chatted for hours and I was the last in a line of eager people wanting a few minutes of her time.   I was bursting to tell Mrs Hurley in person that I admired the way she had worked, all those years ago, to bring defence partners together through a typed magazine she had helped establish called the Spouses of Somalia. It was a magazine meant for defence partners and families of those troops on deployment in Somalia of which His Excellency, General the Honourable David Hurley Commanded the 1st Battalion during Operation SOLACE in 1993.   Mrs Hurley and I chatted and laughed and took comfort in that sense of shared knowing. That knowing that doesn't even need to be explained between defence partners. We know what each other has experienced. We know that feeling of missing your person. We know the excitement and adventure that is often balanced with so much unknown and the feeling of new. We know the challenges faced and the celebrations experienced. The leaving and the coming home. The tears. The amazing community. The moving and the starting over. It is that sense that we know even without explanation. We just know.   Mrs Hurley and I were engrossed in our conversation so much so that even a tap on the shoulder and a waiting Governor-General wasn't going to pull Mrs Hurley away. We connected over the fact that the MWL Podcast was like a modern-day version of the typed magazine she had helped put together in an effort to connect and inform defence partners. The Spouses of Somalia magazine acknowledged that defence partners and families played a huge role in the support of the defence member and their successes. It gave those experiencing separation and the unknown a sense of belonging and information.   Mrs Hurley may live a very public life alongside the Governor-General but I wanted to ask her about the life that came before the fancy titles. The life that included a defence house in Wagga, posting adventures overseas, emotional reunions and welcome home dinners at Pizza Hut. I wanted to hear about her life and her defence partner journey. I'm honoured to welcome Mrs Hurley onto the Podcast and share her story.

Neh 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12 The whole people gathered as one in the open space before the Water Gate, and they called upon Ezra the scribe to bring forth the book of the law of Moses which the LORD prescribed for Israel. On the first day of the seventh month, therefore, Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, which consisted of men, women, and those children old enough to understand. Standing at one end of the open place that was before the Water Gate, he read out of the book from daybreak until midday, in the presence of the men, the women, and those children old enough to understand; and all the people listened attentively to the book of the law. Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that had been made for the occasion. He opened the scroll so that all the people might see it (for he was standing higher up than any of the people); and, as he opened it, all the people rose. Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people, their hands raised high, answered, “Amen, amen!” Then they bowed down and prostrated themselves before the LORD, their faces to the ground. As the people remained in their places, Ezra read plainly from the book of the law of God, interpreting it so that all could understand what was read. Then Nehemiah, that is, His Excellency, and Ezra the priest-scribe and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all the people: “Today is holy to the LORD your God. Do not be sad, and do not weep”– for all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law. He said further: “Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared; for today is holy to our LORD. Do not be saddened this day, for rejoicing in the LORD must be your strength!” And the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Hush, for today is holy, and you must not be saddened.” Then all the people went to eat and drink, to distribute portions, and to celebrate with great joy, for they understood the words that had been expounded to them. Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 11 R. (9ab) The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye; R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; The ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. They are more precious than gold, than a heap of purest gold; Sweeter also than syrup or honey from the comb. Lk 10:1-12 Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/support

What we view here as needed viable technology to create a more sustainable agriculture is likely to be different there.  We have on the show His Excellency Dr. Tariq Bin Hendi. Dr. Tariq is the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). He leads the organisation’s efforts to grow and diversify Abu Dhabi’s economy through private sector investment. He also oversees strategic initiatives that support the emirate’s economic growth and reputation on the world stage. One of those initiatives was to entice leading agtech companies from around the world to establish new R&D and production facilities in the emirate. In 2020, ADIO announced partnerships with AeroFarms, Madar Farms, RNZ and Responsive Drip Irrigation to bring innovation to the area to turn sand into farmland, solve complex global agriculture challenges and expand the profile of local food producers. ADIO is investing $100 million in those four companies to build facilities in Abu Dhabi, each tasked with solving regional and global challenges. They are also partnering with three AgTech companies, US-based Nanoracks, India’s FreshToHome and Pure Harvest to develop ‘land, sea & space’ AgTech projects in Abu Dhabi, offering $41.3m in incentives to the innovative companies to develop next generation agriculture solutions to support food production in arid and desert climates. In this episode, we talk about these initiatives from a high level, and how Dr. Tariq is looking at bringing ag innovation into the region to create a more food secure environment. Synopsis: Since today is George Washington's Birthday (a.k.a. Presidents Day) I thought it would be fun to take up the question: Was George Washington a Stoic? The answer is clear not only from biographical accounts but from the way he lived. Additionally, one of the two “non-platitudinous” eulogies given at the time of his death (according to biographer Joseph Ellis) sheds light on what kind of Stoic Washington was – a classification made clearer by Rabbeinu Yonah's commentary on Mishlei.----------Sources:-  Robertson, Donald J. A new addition to Restoration Radio this season, Trad Controversies tackles controversial and sticky issues that Traditionalists often have to deal with either during or after their recognition that the Novus Ordo Sect is not the Catholic Church. In this introductory "zero" episode, host Stephen Heiner asks His Excellency, Bishop Daniel Dolan and Father Anthony Cekada why they think "trad controversies" occur in the first place and then go on to deconstruct a particular controversy from the 1990s in which some Catholic faithful were asked to sign a "loyalty oath" as a condition of receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. More than twenty years on, the clergy who were involved with this affair reflect on the matter then and now, and give those honestly searching for answers a template for how to examine other trad controversies that we will deal with this season.
