Through his involvement in extracurricular events provided by his local California Farm Bureau chapter, Zane Peterson was able to be a part of logging industry conversations that provided him with the opportunity for legislative involvement that would shape his future career. A young forester, Zane’s parents were involved in the California timber industry via the operation of saw mills and power plants. While an industry that he had always been involved in, Zane is paving his own way in the timber industry today! Most loggers want trees that are 10” in diameter and up while Zane is dealing with trees that are 10” in diameter and down. Chipping is the stuff that “no one wants to do” because it’s harder, costs more, and is less efficient. Zane has used his resources and education to make chipping efficient and, as a result, has very few competitors. Asking the veteran’s what they would have done differently and blending those responses with the opportunity in front of him, he was able to set himself for success. Hiring skilled labor has been one of the biggest challenges for Zane, whose goal is to not pirate employees from fellow loggers. Zane’s team uses the most efficient and most comfortable equipment, which, as a result, allows him to hire the best of the best in the industry. “A lot of people think of entrepreneurs that throw risk to the wind but you have to have very calculated risk,” says Zane, who believes that being calculated in everything that you do is a great advantage. In order to not steal top caliber laborers from his friends in the industry, Zane is involved with Shasta College where, upon graduation, he went back to develop a school specifically for heavy equipment operators. From hands on training experience with field trips to his operation, students get a hands on opportunity to learn more about operating the heavy equipment required in logging. “We have a lot of awesome employees now that wouldn’t have if that program hadn’t been available,” says Zane. Zane firmly believes that community colleges are underrated as they provide useful, practical and career-focused courses and opportunities. College Promise programs are not new to higher education, but they have gained momentum in recent years with the rise of “free college” initiatives across the country. They emerged from the need to increase a workforce to meet the labor demands of local communities and have evolved to address higher education access and equity. Given the variety of models that exist and the thousands of students who have participated in these programs, the questions are: What does it mean for a campus to make a promise and what has that promise meant for students, their families and their communities? This episode features Martha Kanter, Executive Director for the College Promise Campaign, Edward Smith, Program Officer with The Kresge Foundation, and Kate Mahar, Dean of Innovation and Strategic Initiatives at Shasta College. They share their research findings, innovative practices and recommendations on leveraging College Promise Programs to support student success.
Hi! My name is Jordan Valenzuela and I am the owner and a massage therapist at Shasta Strong Massage And Wellness Here is my story of becoming a massage therapist: Growing up, my family would always have me massage their hands, feet, calves, back, neck, shoulders, face.. basically a full body massage. Being my father's daughter, I am naturally very strong. My mom and brother LOVE deep tissue massage, and without schooling, I naturally and from experience got to master the art of massage. By high school freshman year, I had 2-3 clients in math class, and about the same in drama. Never for money, of course. I just loved to do bodywork. I looked into it as a career, and their statistics of length in the industry and finances had my doubtful that this was the path for me. I love marketing and am very independent, so I went to Shasta College for a few years while working four jobs willingly. But after taking a break from college and settling down to focus on 1-2 jobs, I started some critical thinking about my future. I was exerting my energy towards industries I wasn't passionate about. I love to work, but I could have been using all my energy towards something I can call my own and gives me the responsibility I crave. I wanted to build an empire. In October 2013, I went to the CASA Superhero Run to support abused and neglected children. Following the run, I saw free chair massages and waited in line for one. I started asking the lady questions: Where did you get your schooling done? Marinello Schools of Beauty. Do you like your job? Yes, it's rewarding and fun. Do you make enough to make your life comfortable and happy? Yes. That settled it. I signed up for my massage therapy program at Marinello and started in January 2014. I started my business, Jordan Fisher's Therapeutic Massage, in August 2014, immediately following graduation. After four years, being the newly wedded Mrs. Jordan Valenzuela, I decided to expand my family and business. My old sole proprietorship ended, and I created Shasta Strong Massage and Wellness, LLC on Hartnell Avenue in Redding. My husband, Zakari, and daughter Anabelle (3 years old), have been the blessings at home that make life wholesome. But we wanted another for our developing "empire." So we welcomed baby Niko in early August 2019. As our babies are growing, so is my business. Expansion can be scary, but we don't grow when we stay inside our comfort zone. I am a passionate mother, athlete, bodywork professional, and creator. I have exceptional goals and ambitions. And even if I don't meet them all, I never want to stop learning and growing my empire. Feel free to check out our website and book online at www.Shasta-Strong.com Thank you all and I’m very happy to join you in empowering our women!

(https://atgridiron.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/ATG-Burns.png) Chris enjoyed an 11 year career in the CFL playing for Saskatchewan, Ottawa, Calgary and Hamilton. Although born in Conneticut, he grew up in BC and started playing football at a young age. He participated in other sports growing up including ski racing, but football was his passion. Later he went to Shasta College before going to play and attend Portland State University. He had a great career there garnering All-American honors. There was some NFL interest for him but he ultimately went to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders after being their selection, 2nd overall in the draft. He was a CFL all-star in 1999 and 2000 and won the ultimate prize, the Grey Cup, in that 1999 season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He did some broadcasting near the end of his career but always had Real Estate in the back of his mind as the career he wanted to pursue. He is now doing both, working at a Realtor in Vancouver with Engel & Volkers as well BC Lions and Seattle Seahawks pre and post game broadcasts.
