Chad and DJ both got to see La Vega up close at The Pfield last week vs. Sealy in the regional final, a game it won 48-30. What impressed you guys most about the Pirates' performance?Wimberley is a tough, tough team. The Texans have scored 60 or more points in 3 of their 4 playoff games. Will this be the toughest test yet for La Vega's defense on Friday night in Georgetown? When you pull out a game like Hamilton did last week, 15-14 coming from behind vs. Axtell, how much does that boost a team's confidence? And how much will the No. 10 Bulldogs need that confidence this week vs. No. 1 Stamford? Our other 2A team still alive is Bremond, which actually finished out of the top 10 in the final regular season poll. Yet many of those ranked teams are not playing anymore. Have people underestimated the Tigers this year?----- Music: https://purple-planet.com Hosted on Acast. Great defense is just fun to watch, so of the seven Centex teams we have left in the playoffs — La Vega, Marlin, Hamilton, Axtell, Bremond, Abbott and Oglesby — who are some of your favorite guys to watch? The Hamilton Bulldogs face the Axtell Longhorns in an enticing Friday-night matchup this week in the region final. These two teams met in the playoffs two years ago with a 35-21 Bulldogs win, and undefeated Hamilton is now having its best season in school history, while Axtell is no slouch with a 12-1 record. So who do you like in the "red dead redemption" matchup? Our local six-man teams are just one game away from Jerryworld, with Abbott and Oglesby both playing for a trip to state. Who do you think is most likely to get there, the Panthers or the Tigers, and could we go two-for-two?Let's give some eulogies to the dearly departed on Thanksgiving week: Gatesville, Live Oak, Aquilla, Jonesboro, Iredell and Valor Prep. Which of those talented third-round teams will you remember most this season? ----- Music: https://purple-planet.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

They say it's tough to beat a team twice in a season, and the La Vega Pirates will test that theory as they face off with West Orange-Stark on Friday in Magnolia. We've talked about the Pirates being a sleeper team for Jerryworld — what is it about the Pirates that suggests they could knock off the Mustangs this time?We still have seven teams alive in the playoffs in Class 2A: Hamilton, Axtell, Crawford, Marlin, Bremond, Mart and Wortham. We know that one guy can make a lot of difference on a 2A team. So who would you say is the top difference maker among our seven local 2A teams playing this week? One of the ways we judge how good a game might be is whether it was easy for us to pick it in our weekly predictions, or whether it was a tough call. So with that in mind, what was the hardest game to pick this week and why? It's driving-long-distances-to-cover-sports season, but what's on the car stereo as you spend hours in the car each week? • It's been quite a painful season in Central Texas, as the Super Centex All-Injury Team includes Cash Pullin, Carlos Talton and Donovan Jones of the Midway Panthers; London Smith and JD Bell of the University Trojans; Whitney's Jontae Johnson, China Spring's Matthew Battles, West's Coy Klish and Axtell's Levi Leathers. Of the guys on the shelf, is there one who's most indispensible and if one of these guys were to return, would he immediately impact his team's playoff chances? • Some pretty interesting district showdowns this week in La Vega-Connally, Fairfield-Palestine Westwood and University-Brenham — all of those game with clear underdogs, but those underdogs definitely have a puncher's chance. How close do you expect these game to be, and which underdog has the best shot? • Many times this season, Gatesville head coach Aaron Hunter has called star running back Rayshon Smith "the most underrated player in Central Texas." So let's appreciate Rayshon Smith for a few minutes, as he currently leads the area in rushing. • One prediction nobody saw coming is China Spring and Lorena being 3-13 coming into Week 10, both fighting for their playoff lives. • In the history of classic football rants, Dennis Green's reigns supreme: "They are who we thought they were! And we let them off the hook!" A lot of interesting scores came out of the first full week of district play last week. Who was who you thought they were? And were there any surprises?• In the 21st century, there has been no more consistently good Centex rivalry than China Spring-La Vega. The Pirates are clearly the district favorites. But is this a rivalry game "anything can happen" cliche? Or is that even a possibility?• Two years ago, University and Belton played an epic Week 11 matchup for the district title, won by the Tigers, 31-29. Last year, it was a 24-14 Belton win down south. So surely the Trojans are ready to break through and take revenge this week, right? And how badly do they need a bounce-back after that Rudder game?• Helmet stickers are earned, not given. And we don't want to overlook any Centex teams. Several teams are quietly putting together some great seasons. Who's flying under the radar? How about Fairfield, Clifton, Axtell, Bremond, Aquilla or someone else?----- Music: https://purple-planet.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

When Ken first knew Rick Axtell, he was a high school student. Ken, a seminarian in his early 20s, was his Youth Pastor at a church in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Rick was a leader in the youth group. When Rick moved to Mississippi and Ken graduated, they bid farewell - turns out, for fifty years. Just in the past few months, they have become re-acquainted, chatting on video calls with two other members of the long-ago youth group. Rick has had an extraordinary career as a college professor and chaplain, serving on the same Kentucky campus (the highly regarded Centre College) for three decades. Ken and Rick share their journey and their profound awakenings. Rick shares his experience in war-torn Bangladesh and how it set the course of his life. His coursework, his travels (with students), and his engagement with homelessness, poverty, and hunger have enormously impacted his life and career. His commitment to addressing the needs of the marginalized and the neglected, including LGBTQ+, has earned him the respect and admiration of his students, fellow faculty, and colleagues. On retirement, the college established an Endowment in Rick's name. It reflects his passion and his remarkable contribution to the college community - advancing “religion, peace, and social justice.” SHOW NOTES (learn more about Dr. Axtell)Become a Patron | Ken's Substack PageSupport the Show.

Trib sportswriter DJ Ramirez, non-Trib sportswriter Chad Conine and Trib sports editor Brice Cherry are back to talk some Centex football as we head into Week 6.  1. We've got several first-year head coaches guiding their squads in the right direction with University at 4-1 (1-0), Lorena 3-2 (1-0) and Robinson also 4-1. Out of these first-year coaches — Kaeron Johnson, Kevin Johnson and Chris Lancaster — who has done the most impressive job so far? (And shout-out to Robert Little at Riesel, too, BTW.)  2. At least three Centex programs picked up their first wins of the year in big ways last week: Midway surviving Hutto by three points, 45-42; Rosebud-Lott upending Crawford, 28-27; and the Fairfield Eagles drubbing Eustace, 67-6. Out of these three programs who are all now 1-0 in district, who has the best shot of making the playoffs?  3. As always, there's an array of talented quarterback play in Central Texas. We're seeing really impressive seasons from China Spring's Cash McCollum, of course, but also Lake Belton's Eli Mascarenas and Cameron Yoe's Braylan Drake. If you had one play to win the state championship, and had to choose one of these QBs, who would you put under center?  4. In the 2A ranks, undefeated Mart and Chilton are both state-ranked and obviously very good teams, as anyone would have suspected. But we have some other 2A teams on the rise — we're talking about Axtell, Riesel and Itasca. Who has the best shot of playing deep into December?  -----  Music: http://www.purple-planet.com Support the show: https://wacotrib.com/sports/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After that, we have one last interview by Chris with John Axtell published a literary zine this year about the landscape and culture of the SGV. John and Chris talk quite a bit about open spaces, and rebuilding the industrial wastelands around the 605. But first, Curry kicks off the podcast with a review of the legislation and other decisions made in Sacramento that have and will impact how the San Gabriel Valley grows and changes in the coming decades. In October she wrote an overview of some of the biggest pieces of legislation that the Governor signed (or didn't sign) and earlier this week she wrote a very early review of what could happen in the legislature in 2023. Next, Joe Linton discussed some of the changes that will be happening with the L.A. County Government and with Metro. The agency celebrated the restoration of service to pre-pandemic levels in the last month. New County Supervisors, and a new L.A. Mayor, signal that some other changes could be coming to the agency soon. Closing out the first portion of the podcast, Chris updates on the two biggest stories covered after he took over the beat from Kris Fortin: The Bus Rapid Transit concepts from the SGV Transit Feasibility Study and when County supervisors tossed out an activist appeal to slow construction on 85 condo units on a decommissioned school site in Hacienda Heights. • It's a bye week for something like a third of teams around the state, with those in six-team districts taking a breather before starting the meaningful games. Out of teams who are actually playing this week in Central Texas, who needs a win most? Midway, Waco High? How about Connally or Robinson? • La Vega ended its tough skid with a blowout homecoming win over Dallas Roosevelt to move to 2-3 on the year. The Pirates are a historically tough, very physical outfit and so perhaps being backed into a corner is exactly what they need. Do you see the tradition-rich Pirates making a deep playoff run? Do they have that ind of capability?  • Surprisingly, Midway at Harker Heights may actually be the game of the week (on an admittedly weak week) given what we saw from the explosive Junior Thornton-led Panthers last week against Hutto as they actually won a game and got to 1-0 in district. Can the Panthers compete with the likes of the Knights and Temple, who they get in two weeks, and contend for the District 12-6A title? • Mike Cadell, formerly of Axtell and now an assistant at La Vega, recently posited this: The Frito pie is the be-all, end-all greatest high school football concession food. Does the panel agree, and if not, what is? ----- Music: http://www.purple-planet.comSupport the show: https://wacotrib.com/sports/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

John Axtell retired from the Marine Corps in 2014 where he was a military police officer, infantryman and a recruiter. He and I met many years ago when he went through my TAP class and I helped him see the value of his skills and experience in recruiting to land a role in talent acquisition with an airline. He went to Wells Fargo as a recruiter and is now on the Military Talent Programs team.John went into TAP with the fear that he was only qualified to go into security or law enforcement. He and I spent some time one-on-one to help him understand how to translate his military skills and leverage his experience into a talent acquisition role. John has been in talent acquisition in the private sector for 8 years. He shares “insider” knowledge to get inside the mind of a recruiter. He shares best practices on things like resumes, networking, LinkedIn, the Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) “bots” and interview prep. Some highlights:RESUMES:- Think about human nature when you are laying out your resume. They naturally read from top to bottom and left to right. Organize and prioritize your resume layout with this in mind. - The human eye is drawn to numbers and companies like to see measurables. - Resume writing is a science and a skill. - Focus on “Return on Investment” statements that show how you can add value. BEATING THE ATS:- Even a large company like Wells Fargo has humans that read the resume. - The best way to “beat” the ATS, you need to network and create connections on the inside of the company. Networking can help you understand the company where you are applying and focus on their priorities. NETWORKING:- Networking helps you get a leg up on the competition and get past the ATS in the job search. - Networking is all about making connections and having conversations with people who can give you inside information on their company. JOB POSTINGS:- Required qualifications you must have, this is where you can match and mirror the key words in your resume. Desired qualifications are a bonus and you don't HAVE to have them. When trying to determine if you meet the qualifications, these desired qualifications don't count against you. - At Wells Fargo, if you see “other desired qualifications,” pay special attention to these skills and focus on showcasing them on your resume. - Think of the job posting as a “cheat sheet” that you can use to focus and target your resume to the company and the specific role. INTERVIEW PREPARATION:- Know your resume and be able to speak to everything on it. Prepare your STAR statements (Situation, Task, Action, Result) in advance and be prepared to answer behavioral questions with stories and examples.- Do your research, both on the company and the people who are interviewing you. - Be comfortable and be confident! If they invited you to an interview, they've already expressed that they like you as qualified candidate. USING LINKEDIN:- Be strategic with your connections. Focus on quality over quantity. Build a network of people that are engaged and willing to assist you with your search. You can connect with John Axtell on LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/in/john-axtell-ii-77887093/SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A FIVE-STAR REVIEW and share this to other veterans who might need help as they transition from the military!Connect with me on Facebook and LinkedIn! You can check out the episode on  @CBS  here: https://www.cbs.com/shows/video/Y9K7jbbSJPIP2bUN47OVF8mgJ7O7nCXa/   Enjoy this episode of  @Franchise Secrets !   With over 30 years of experience helping new and seasoned entrepreneurs award more than 10,000 franchise locations worldwide, Gary Findley is a master at business development. Today he serves as the CEO of Stellar Brands, an umbrella company uniting Restoration 1, bluefrog Plumbing + Drain, The Driveway Company, Softroc, and potential future acquisitions under one multi-branded service organization. Together, they include more than 350 franchise locations across the U.S. and Canada. In addition to these home service brands, the Stellar Brands platform also includes FranXperts, a leading franchise consulting and development company.   Gary also serves as operating partner of franchising and home services for MPK Equity Partners, the private investment firm over Stellar Brands whose principals have invested in, founded or run nearly 100 companies with an aggregate transactional value approaching $10 billion. And he was appointed to the Advisory Board for the Titus Center for Franchising at Palm Beach Atlantic University.   As the self-proclaimed “Redneck CEO,” Gary credits growing up in the small, rural town of Axtell, Texas, for instilling his strong work ethic and unshakeable faith, the keys that have carried him through life. That foundation fed his entrepreneurial drive and led to running his own businesses, serving as a franchise owner of multiple franchise brands, and ultimately becoming an executive to grow some of the largest franchise networks across the country and around the world.   From 2008 to 2013, Gary was the chief operating officer of Snap Fitness, a global franchise brand with over 1,200 locations. Before that, Gary served as the founder and CEO of The Findley Group, an award-winning franchise development company that helped launch and grow more than a dozen brands. Prior to starting The Findley Group, Gary was president of Curves, a women's fitness franchise where he led franchise development efforts and grew the system to more than 8,000 locations in eight years. Gary began his career at The Dwyer Group (now Neighborly) where he was vice president of franchise sales for Rainbow International.   Gary is the author of The Redneck CEO, a book that details his business journey and his principles for success. -----------------------------------   Did you know you can listen to the Franchise Secrets Podcast on your favorite platforms?   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4BpskQS...   Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...   Learn more about my franchisee mastermind here: www.franchisetribe.com ⬅   Learn more about my franchisor mastermind here: www.franchisortribe.com ⬅   Learn more about my passive investing mastermind here: www.tribeofinvestors.com ⬅   Want to buy a franchise? They are known as the “Twin Cities.” But when it comes to how some in the community view law enforcement, Minneapolis and St. Paul couldn’t be further apart. In 2020, America witnessed a tragedy unfold in Minneapolis, triggering weeks of riots and civil unrest. Just a few miles east, the St. Paul police chief refused to allow one incident be used to define our profession. On this episode of the Blue View, National President Patrick Yoes is joined by Todd Axtell, Chief of Police for the City of Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he leads an agency with 820 employees. As the oldest police department in the State, the St. Paul Police Department has become known for delivering trusted service with respect—every day, without exception. Thanks to Chief Axtell’s “bank of trust” philosophy—one which views every call for service, conversation, and community interaction as an opportunity to make a deposit—the department has been able to maintain its stellar reputation and strengthen its ties despite the historic civil unrest, a global pandemic, and several high-profile crises. ⬛️ ⬛️ ⬛️ SUBSCRIBE TO THE BLUE VIEW PODCAST Blue View Podcast ➡️ https://blue-view.castos.com/ Apple Podcasts ➡️ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/blue-view-by-the-fraternal-order-of-police-fop/id1609211746 Spotify ➡️ https://open.spotify.com/show/3OZzhTEcwf3e2y0sPqdsew Amazon ➡️ https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/aad56de4-4a9a-46d2-a71f-ba46ea487797/blue-view-by-the-fraternal-order-of-police-fop
