First we discuss how the term “Gish gallop” has entered the common vernacular thanks to the recent Presidential debate. Then Ben ponders why conspiracy buffs don't care about the admitted, real Boeing conspiracy, or why psychics can't offer up explanations for the Rust killing. Celestia gets excited about folklore in pop culture: namely, “The Crooked Man” in a new Hellboy movie. For our main segment, we are rejoined by skeptical author and illustrator Daniel Loxton, to talk about MONSTER HUNTS!—that is, serious expeditions to find cryptids or other mysterious creatures. From Nazis looking for Yeti to missionaries searching out dinosaurs in Africa, there are anthropological considerations when engaging with locals in a foreign land. And what makes a monster hunt successful? Lock Ness is a success in that practically every drop of water in it has been examined, to no avail. We touch on Ben's trips to remote parts of Nicaragua to look for the chupacabra, as well as other expeditions in the 20th century, to find a death worm in Mongolia, the Mokele-mbembe in Africa, and a mermaid-like Ri in New Guinea. We also touch on overpriced Bigfoot “hunt” experiences as well as “educational hoaxes” like snipe hunting.
The United States of America continues to be full of mysteries. Each state has its own mystery lurking in the shadows, waiting to be dragged out into the bright light of day. So let us continue our tour of America, and shine a light on the monsters we find along the way on this finale episode of Snipe Hunt. Nature abhors a vacuum. One such vacuum exists in the “urban ecologies” of our cities. From bacteria to insects, from rodents to hawks, from feral cats to the mass numbers of pigeons, plants, and animals weave together a web of life that goes mostly unnoticed by humans. What is missing from this mosaic? Four college students set out to find this mythical creature, the “Snipe,” and learn that a vacuum isn't the only thing nature abhors. When a ghost resides in a house, most would consider it haunted - infested with the spirits of the dead who only seek to terrify the living - and it is considered a frightening and negative phenomenon. But in Eastern Europe, residential phantoms are commonplace, and in most cases are expected and encouraged. Although these spirits can also instill fear in the human residents of the home, most people will do what they can to make these ghosts feel welcome. Hidden in one of the innumerable forested valleys of South America, a city of indescribable riches was said to exist. A city in which gold was treated as casually as salt - it covered the buildings, the people, and even the bottom of lakes. Deep in the heart of the City of Sin lies the Wengert Mansion, a Tudor Revival home set on an 11,000 square foot property and built in 1938. The Wengert's were a pillar of their Las Vegas community and died peacefully in the home 30 years after it was built. However, there were rumors of dark occult rituals being performed in the house, and some say that hostile spirits, as well as the ghosts of the Wengert family, still haunt the property. Famed paranormal investigator Zak Bagans, purchased the property and began to fill it with every cursed, haunted, creepy, and even iconic object he could find; and even human remains. Are you unhappy, bogged down in disappointment, things just not working out for you? Here's a little tip for you.
Most of us have heard this before: “Hey I saw your doppelganger the other day, I thought it was you for a moment”. That is what the word “doppelganger” means today - another person that looks similar to, but still distinct from, yourself. A twin stranger. However in folklore, the original meaning is much more sinister. The doppelganger is a harbinger of doom, and seeing your own ghostly double might just mean certain death. Tonight we witness these enigmatic evil twins for ourselves on this episode of Snipe Hunt. America has a gun problem. So much media is out there where guns are featured almost as the lead characters, and sometimes there's nothing more fun than getting lost in this alternate reality and letting the cathartic violence wash away your cares of the day. It seems lately though that the reality of gun violence is harder and harder to ignore. We picked two movies for the podcast that focus on gun violence and the people who are behind those guns. These are both powerful and expertly-crafted films and we recommend both heartily! We start off with Peter Bogdanovich's debut as a director, 1968's Targets which tells the tale of young man raised in a gun-loving family who decides one day that he's going to kill as many people as he can. Boris Karloff turns in an amazing performance as a fading film star who's struggling with his place in society. We follow that with Two Minute Warning from 1976 which stars Charlton Heston and a slew of Hollywood luminaries in a story largely set in a football stadium during a playoff game where a lone sniper sits high above the crowd, slowly planning his next move. The tension is incredible and the sense of panic once the shooting starts is shockingly real. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. (29:16) Mark Twain wrote a humorous short story about The Cardiff Giant, an infamous real-live hoax from the 1860s involving P.T. Barnum. We dramatized Twain's story and performed it live in the Apple Seed Studio. Halloween - the time of year where the veil between the living and the dead becomes thin; the air becomes colder, and the atmosphere becomes spooky. This holiday has misguided associations with evil, and perhaps not-so-misguided associations with mischief. These negative connections made to this holiday have spawned various urban legends. Legends of poisoned candy and satanic activity. But is there any truth to these contemporary myths? Let's find out tonight on this sickly sweet episode of Snipe Hunt. Think of a local business in your area. Maybe it's a mom and pop shop, a local restaurant, a place that provides useful services. What comes to mind? I personally think of friendly service, a price that is a little higher but worth it since it is local, and a job well done. Now what if in that business, something more sinister was going on? Right in your town, right under your nose. Would you ever suspect that kind of activity? If so, would you think it was true or would you think that you are going crazy? Cummings “Surely there has not been another time in history when women have questioned their self-worth as harshly and critically as in the second half of the twentieth century. Many women are searching, almost frantically, as never before, for a sense of personal purpose and meaning; and many LDS women are searching, too, for eternal insight and meaning in their femaleness. If I were Satan and wanted to destroy a society, I think I would stage a full-blown blitz on women.
